"INTRODUCTIONThe renaissance in gold and silver recovery technology has continued to unfold and it is appropriate to review some of the useful new technologies as well as try to identify some of the industry's future needs and frontiers.The remarkable strengthening in the US dollar has resulted in a relatively low gold price in US Dollars of around $310/oz at the time of writing and silver at $6.25/oz. This general softening in the dollar prices and the recent confusion as to environmental compatibility of cyanidation tailings and effluents, has led to a slowdown in announcements of new operations. Another reason for the slackening off in the USA is that in the past few years a large part of the capital has come from oi I and gas companies that now seem to be losing interest in mineral ventures, and foreign investors for whom the dollar is becoming out of reach. In the author's opinion this represents an unprecedented window of opportunity.Elsewhere in the world where local currencies have weakened, the price of gold is at or close to its all time high.For example, in South African Rands, the gold price was R571.00/oz when the rand was US$1.47 and the gold price reached US$800. Now at US $309/oz and with the Rand at US$0.51 = Rl .00, the local gold price is R600. The price of si Iver in Mexican pesos is not much less than it was when silver reached US$50/oz. Gold, and silver prices in local currencies outside North America are still buovant and at levels where additional investment in new projects is more encouraging.Even in Canada where the dollar is worth about US$0. 75, this provides a smaller but significant cushion compared with US operations. Considering the present strength of the US dollar and even the Canadian dollar relative to many other gold producing countries, there should be significant investment opportunities at today's prices. Mining companies have started to descend on Brazil, for example, where in a matter of just a few years annual gold production has increased from 10 to 70 tons. In South Africa, a Canadian company backed by Swiss financing has been able to take over a Witwatersrand gold mining operation and is installing a huge new tailin9s retreatment plant to process about 1 million tons per month of tailings."

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man's health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). In 2002, excavation support work commenced on the Capitol Visitor Center project located adjacent to the nation?s Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The outlying work (Slurry Wall Work at Main Site is not discussed) consisted of providing excavation support for a new truck tunnel approximately 1900 feet long up to 50 feet deep as well as support for the new underground auditorium and Library of Congress tunnel. The excavation support consisted of a combination of conventional drilled in soldier beams, lagging, tiebacks and braces; intricate underpinning inside the existing Capitol building; support of an existing Russell Tunnel; soil nailing and tiebacks underneath the existing Russell Tunnel; two temporary bridges; and a deep soil mixed wall with lateral support provided by braces. As part of an on-going research program, some of these braces were instrumented with strain gauges. The deep soil mixed wall was approximately 300 feet long and 65 feet deep on either side of the truck tunnel. Approximately 34,000 sf of deep soil mixed wall, 90,000 sf of conventional excavation support, 200 braces, and 320 tiebacks were installed. This paper describes the large scope and breadth of the project that required a variety of excavation support techniques. A few of the challenges in designing and installing the support of excavation are discussed. This paper also presents the results of the instrumentation program conducted on the deep soil mixed wall, which stood open for more than a year.

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Tech (Mining Engineering) degree A number of high wall mining methods were developed over the years to mine coal reserves exposed on the high walls created during surface mining. The auger mining system was initially developed in the early 1940s in the United States of America. High wall mining is a method of recovering coal from seam exposed either by mechanical excavation methods or natural erosions. This is usually associated with strip-mining (opencast) where the stripping ratio is high and uneconomical to mine using the opencast mining method. This paper discusses the surface auger mining as deployed at Rietspruit Mine Services Proprietary Limited.

These proceedings consist of an overview of the in situ mining research currently being carried out by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers emphasize two general aspects of the in situ mining method: the environment and productivity. Both areas are extremely important, particularly because in situ leach mining is a relatively new mining method from a commercial point of view. Topics covered include the restoration of ground water, the selection of lixiviants, in situ mining of commodities other than uranium, in situ mining costs, the application of resistance measurements to in situ mining, an acid leach mining case history, and the use of branched boreholes for in situ mining. A bibliography of Bureau of Mines publications on in situ mining is appended.

"INTRODUCTION The Cranberry magnetite deposits occur in pre-Cambrian granite-gneiss in a belt extending from 3 miles southeast of Cranberry, N. C., to about 6 miles southwest of Magnetic City, Tenn. The belt forms a curve, elongated to the north, approximately 26 miles in length.The Bureau of Mines investigation has been confined to the eastern part of the belt, comprising the area from Fork Mountain, Avery County, N. C., to the Hcupscup Knob prospects in Carter County, Tenn.The deposits were worked at least as early as 1820. The Cranberry Iron & Coal Co. and its successors operated the Cranberry mine intermittently for about 50 years until 1930, when operations were abandoned.The magnetite rock is amenable to concentration. Numerous laboratory tests and pilot-mill operations have proved that a high-iron, and low-phosphorus concentrate can be obtained by fine grinding and magnetic, separation, the quality of the concentrate depending upon the extent of grinding. The principal objectives of the Cranberry project were threefold.The primary consideration for beginning exploration of the deposits was the need for developing additional deposits of high-grade iron ore during the war and for replenishing the war's depletion of iron-ore reserves for the peacetime economy. The emergency did not permit logical sequence bf development, and it was necessary to begin drilling before the geophysical survey was completed. The first drilling was begun at the Cranberry mine; and the holes were located from the geological data, coordinated with the position of the mine workings."

THERMODYNAMIC data for manganese and its inorganic compounds have not been critically surveyed since the work of Maier (31) 3 in 1934. At that time data were lacking or inadequate for many of the important metallurgical compounds. Experimental work, conducted during the intervening years, has supplied so many new thermodynamic values that it is again desirable to examine the available data and compile them into a single publication for handy reference. This paper consists of three main sections. The first summarizes the basic metallurgical thermodynamic data for manganese and its compounds, including heat capacities, entropies, heat contents, temperatures and heats of phase changes, vapor pressures, and heats and free energies of formation. All data available to May 1959 have been considered. The second section contains heats, free energies, equilibrium pressures, and equilibrium constants of reactions of manganese compounds, with special emphasis on metallurgical reactions. The third section supplies basic thermodynamic data for other elements and compounds encountered in metallurgical reactions of manganese, thus making it possible for the reader to conduct thermodynamic calculations without recourse to other literature.

Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with the intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to IS0 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

THIS is a metallurgical war. More than ever before, the mechanized forces and the air-borne warfare are deciding campaigns. Both of these are primarily dependent upon metals. There are two ways of increasing the effective supply of these metals when the demand is greater than the total over-all supply. The American custom, when a shortage of anything develops, is to get more. In the case of some nonferrous metals this has been done. For example, our potential peak output of magnesium will be almost one hundred times the prewar production. Output of aluminun has also been tremendously increased, and production of other metals is being stimulated by every possible means. Our enemies, however, have another successful method of increasing the effective supply of a material, and that is, to eliminate entirely all nonessential uses, and also to use, in essential applications, alternate materials wherever possible. Sometimes, ersatz material is inferior to the original, and consequently does not do the job as well. Often, however, it has been found superior, and many substitute items are now being used both by industry and by the military which will continue even when the original material again becomes available.

"For a model to be successful it must address the concerns and needs of a target audience. Further, the model must demonstrate the same patterns of behaviour as the real system, and need only be complex enough to meet this objective. If the model is too complex it can become unusable to those who need it most.With this in mind, SUPASIM has been developed for the practical metallurgist requiring only laboratory flotation rate data as input. Some 35+ successful plant simulations have been completed since 1985. The approach of SUPASIM is to characterise an ore, organise information in an understandable way and add structure to the complex flotation situation and hence support the metallurgist to interpret the relationship between variables and optimise the flotation process.The paper describes the basis on which the model was developed and sets out to provide an insight into interpreting laboratory flotation kinetics and their physical meaning in a production plant and the influence floatable gangue has on float performance and plant design. A case study illustrates how the ratio of slow floating mineral to gangue can influence circuit design and improve recovery on a plant scale.INTRODUCTIONThere is an enormous amount of useful data in the results of a laboratory scale rate test. Each variable of fraction and rate, for mineral, metal and gangue has a physical meaning in the plant. The link between float kinetics and the plant in respect of recovery, grade, pulp density, pulp flowrate, residence time, number of stages of cleaning and circuit configuration has been established by the author in the process of developing SUPASIM."

The upper Arkansas basin has some of the greatest potential for geothermal development in Colorado. Over several summers, students conducted an investigation using seismic, gravity, and magnetics in order to help identify the large structures and basin fill associated with the Rio Grande Rift. Adjacent to Mount Princeton Hot Springs, near surface geophysics was conducted to help understand the faulting and fractures that act as a conduit for hydrothermal flow. The methods used included high frequency 3D seismic, magnetics, gravity, D.C. resistivity, and self potential. Throughout the Mount Princeton area, passive seismic, vertical seismic profiling, and well logging were also used to better understand the geology and activity of the region. The results indicate for the area northwest of the hot springs, a 40 to 50 m thick unconsolidated layer overlying the fractured granitic basement. The DC profile shows a deep geothermal anomaly of low resistivity which correlates with a positive SP anomaly in the same region. In the Chalk Creek valley, a shear zone extends from the north east to the south west, just south of the Chalk Cliffs. There appears to be an upward migration of the water through this shear zone which then flows along the porous sediments towards the south in this area. The deep seismic data collected in the center of the basin suggests that the depth to the basement is approximately 2000m. Also identified on the deep seismic are two major faults on the west end and two minors at the east end of the cross-section. An alteration zone is identified between the faults and a possible Precambrian northeast trending shear zone. The potential for developing an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) near the center of the valley is high. Our geophysical results indicate a deep basin fill near the center of the basin providing high temperatures. The range front (Sawatch) fault is observed to penetrate under the center of the basin and is an attractive target for natural fractures.

TRANSVERSE rupture tests have been commonly used in mechanical investigations of brittle materials. The specimens are simple, easy to prepare, and loading presents no difficulty. Owing to the complexity of stress distribution in bending1 one can determine stresses rigorously only for the elastic range. The bend-test results, however, are at times converted into tensile-strength data, determined as maximum fiber stress. The assumption is made that for small plastic deformations the linear stress-strain relation applies. This problem was experimentally investigated by Bach3 who tested cast iron in bending and in tension and found that the maximum fiber strength obtained in bending exceeded the experimental tensile strength by a factor depending on the geometry of the tested piece. The factor varied from 1.57 for a rectangular cross section to 2.12 for a circular cross section of the tested beam. Since this work was carried out 60 years ago, the cast iron used could be expected to have been highly brittle, thus the extent of plastic deformation prior to fracture very small. We have therefore carried out a number of tests on magnesium-modified cast iron with an average elongation of -5 pct. It was hoped that the data obtained from the tests would serve as a guideline for comparing data obtained in tension and bending for brittle materials. Mechanical properties were measured at room temperature on an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The three-point bend test employed cylindrical bars 0.20 in. in diameter with a 1.0-in. span. For the tensile test, cylindrical tensile specimens with a gage length of 0.85 in. and a diameter of 0.160 in. were used. Results are summarized in Table I. The Homestake mine, located in western South Dakota, was discovered in 1876. The first reported production was in I 878. Total production through 1965 is 6,554,249 troy ounces of silver and 27,961,276 troy ounces of gold, worth $987,000,000 at present prices. Precambrian sedimentary formations at Lead total 20,000 feet. The Poorman Formation, the oldest, is chiefly ankerite carbonate. The Homestake Formation is iron-magnesium carbonate. The younger formations are argillaceous with some quartzites. The Cambrian Deadwood Formation unconformably overlies the Precambrian. All are cut by Tertiary intrusives. Sideroplesite schist of the Homestake Formation was converted to cummingtonite schist in the zones of higher-grade metamorphism. The Precambrian rocks show the effects of extreme isoclinal folding. A second stage of folding ( cross folds) may have been caused by the Tertiary intrusives. All folds plunge to the southeast. The Homestake ore bodies are pipe-like replacements of the Homestake Formation in zones of cross folding. It is believed that dilatation of the schists has increased permeability in these zones. Chloritization of the schists is the most widespread effect of the mineralization which is divided into four stages. Principal minerals of the first stage are quartz, chlorite, and arsenopyrite; in the second stage, quartz, ankerite, and pyrrhotite. In the third stage only pyrrhotite was deposited. The fourth stage followed the intrusions of Tertiary dikes and deposited mostly pyrite and calcite. Gold accompanies all stages and is always the last mineral to be deposited. It is most closely associated with arsenopyrite of the first stage but can be interpreted as having been deposited during the fourth stage and superimposed on the products of the earlier stages.
