"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted the Bureau's Mount 'Weather Testing Adit,Mount Weather, The author acknowledges the assistance and cooperation of Wing G. Image analysis for feed belts and flotation has been used for over 20 years. It has been shown to aid in the modelling and optimization of Sag Mill circuits, and any improvements in the image analysis result in improvements in the model for control. Using a laser to measure the height-profile of rocks on the conveyor has been shown to increase the accuracy of the size classification. We have developed a system using two cameras in a stereoscopic configuration to provide height-profile measurement without the added expense and safety concerns of using a laser. Additionally, we have developed a novel technique for calibration of the system, using artificial intelligence techniques to optimize the model fit by adjusting the image analysis tuning parameters to values resulting in the best classification.

Coals from the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales treated in the Port Kembla coal preparation plants of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. differ supstantially in their characteristics. Knpwledge of performance not only enables comparison and promotes better control, but also provides the means for predicting results.Evaluation of performance of cleaning equipment has been made in terms of probable error (Ep). Results for Baum jigs, a Chance cone, heavy medium cyclones, and water washing cyclones were examined. The efficiency factors derived from the probable error were applied to the float and sink analysis, mathematically simulating operating conditions. This method was applied to the Balgownie seam.The Balgownie seam lies between the Bulli and Wongawilli seams in the coal measures of the South Coast and mining on a large scale began recently in the Bulli area. It is known locally as the Four Foot seam and exhibits rather difficult washability characteristics, due to a comparatively high middlings content. These properties and the relatively high inherent ash make careful selection of cleaning equipment essential for optimum recovery. The prediction technique is used to determine the possible results when this coal is cleaned in the Port Kembla plants. Predicted values are compared with results from full scale trial washings demonstrating the validity and accuracy of the technique.Applications of result forecasting are listed.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, platinum Mortimer Smelter is one of the three smelting operations in the Anglo Platinum Group. It is located in the Limpopo Province, approximately 100 km north of Rustenburg, and approximately 15 km west of Northam. The smelter operation is the smallest of the three smelting operations in the group, with a smelting capacity of 170 kt/annum. The operation consists of a Larox filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, a modified Elkem / Hatch 19.5 MVA furnace, and a 60 t/h matte crushing plant. The operation does not convert its furnace matte, and hence the final sulphide rich matte is transported to and processed further at the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) within the Waterval Smelter Complex in Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transported to a slag dump.

IN wartime, the fabrication and use of metals assumes increased importance, for a modern war of sizable proportions cannot be undertaken with- out a vast supply of this material. Light alloys of aluminum and magnesium, which were comparatively unknown in the last war, will play an important role in this one. Due to research on a vast scale in the interim of years, industry is today well equipped to fabricate metals on an enormous scale. Research for the past year has been most productive and a comprehensive survey in the space of this article would be impossible. It is hoped that the stressing of a few items here and there out of a great quantity of able work will indicate in a small way the advances made within recent times. Specific references to the literature will be omitted at the Editor's re- quest but some authors of papers that I have found of special interest are mentioned.

As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. The engineering profession generally does not accept vibro-driven piles as bearing piles unless their capacities can be verified by restriking with an impact hammer, which significantly reduces the economic benefits of vibratory driving. In part, the concern for capacity development in piles driven by vibration arises out of observations that vibro-driven piles do not develop capacities equivalent to those driven by impact (e. g., Mosher, 1987). Nonetheless, if capacities are predictable, vibratory installation may be more cost effective than installation by impact, due to savings in time of installation, even if capacities are lower than those of impact-driven piles. Throughout the past few decades, a number of attempts have been made to develop capacity prediction methods for vibro-driven piles, mostly along the same lines as methods for impact-driven piles. That is, (1) totally empirical formulae, (2) power balance / power transfer formulae, and (3) "time domain-nonlinear" (TDN) computational procedures such as the wave equation. Some of the formulae have been based partly on field experience, but the majority have been developed from simple theoretical models with parameters evaluated from laboratory studies. "INTRODUCTION Sponge iron has been made commercially since 1912 at a Swedish ceramic plant; and the product, known as Swedish disk-type nagger sponge iron, has an excellent reputation as a superior furnace feed wherever high-grade steels are made.The general procedure for making brickyard sponge iron was described frequent in Swedish technical journals before 1932 and at that time consisted in filling clay refractory containers, called saggers, with iron ore plus the necessary quantity of solid reducing agent and then firing in an ordinary ceramic kiln. Two types of sponge iron were made in this way: (1) An inferior, high-sulfur product obtained by mixing the ore and solid reducing agent; and (2) a high-grade, low-sulfur product made by filling the sagger with alternete layers of unmixed ore and reducer, yielding sintered disks of metallic iron particles.Swedish disk-type sponge iron of interest to the steel industry because it has a very low sulfur content, even when made by the use of low-grade, high-sulfur coals for reducing and firing. The Swedish product also contains little siliceous gangue residue and is almost phos¬phorus-free. To those features must be added the high metallic-iron content -90 to 96 percent - and freedom from even small amounts of the metals that are undesirable in steel making.The details essential for successful operation of this procedure are not known, especially as regards improvements said to have been made since 19;2. The Bureau of Mines therefore decided to determine some of these missing details, and this report records the results of the first set of experiments on the manufacture of brickyard or sagger sponge iron."

A full-scale Deister column was operated in parallel with the conventional cleaning bank of cells and a pilot Jameson cell in parallel with the conventional rougher cells. Flotation column performance was appreciably enhanced by use of an improved washing system and an internal launder. The performance of the rougher bank of cells, Jameson cells, cleaner cell bank and column were described by simple linear functions. These allowed calculation of overall circuit recoveries and evaluation of alternative circuits. An evaluation procedure based on a financial criterion is demonstrated with a simplified example, illustrating how revenues and operating margins are often of more concern than concentrate grade and recovery

Continuing with the effort of providing new and more effective exploration methods to the mining industry, where direct methods (drilling, cross-cutting, etc.) are not applicable, either for logistical or environmental reasons or because they are costly and sometimes ineffective, we present here a new seismic technique based on full wave recording of 3-D channel waves generated within the coal seam across a longwall. In the past two years we reported the application on In-Seam High Resolution Seismic Reflection (ISHRSR) and In-Seam Seismic Tomography (ISST) to map non-coal inclusions that disrupt the coal seam continuity. In the present paper we present a 3-D In-Seam Seismic Tomography (3-DTSST) method using 3-D channel waves recorded by three component high resolution geophones. The method allows to distinguish longitudinal and transversal components of the channel waves, similar to the spheroidal and toroidal modes for the free oscillations of the earth. The recording of these waves allows a more complete analysis of the free modal vibrations of channel waves, permitting a more complete inversion of the structure of the coal seam through which they travel. The full wave analysis provides additional insights of the detailed coal structure for larger, distances than for the ones previously reported using the one dimensional method. The refinement of the inversion software is also a contribution towards the better definition of the coal seam geometry and structures disturbing them such as sandstone channels, sandstone rolls, partings, mine voids, faults, fractures, etc. The method is illustrated with three case studies where subsequent mining revealed the virtues and limitations. The first example deals with the problem of mapping mine works in one side of a longwall panel which geometry is well known, to verify its applicability to map old mine works. The second example deals with a sandstone body that partially scoured the coal seam withing a longwall panel. The third shows an application of the method to map roof conditions in a longwall panel where this problem critically affected production scheduling and costs

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada . The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analysed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

"On October 11, 2000, an estimated 306 million gallons of water and coal waste slurry drained from an impoundment in Martin County, eastern Kentucky into an adjacent underground mine. Approximately 230 million gallons of the water and slurry discharged from two underground mine portals and affected over 75 miles of streams in Kentucky and West Virginia. In response to this and several other similar events, the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) commissioned an oversight study that evaluates how well state and federal regulatory programs established under the Surface Mining Control and Enforcement Act are ensuring that impoundment operators are minimizing the potential for impoundment-basin breakthroughs. The study focuses on slurry impoundments constructed in the hollows of Appalachia where numerous coal seams and steep topography combine to result in a large number of mined seams intersecting and underlying impounding facilities. Factors under consideration include: (1) full accounting of all mineable coal seams intersecting and underlying the impoundment; (2) identification and accurate location of underground mines close enough to the impoundment to potentially affect its stability; (3) assessment of the stability of coal barriers between the impoundment basin and adjacent mines, and stability of roof rock and pillars in mines subjacent to the structure; (4) determination of the flowability of the impounded slurry when expanding or undermining the facility are being considered; and (5) measures undertaken to reduce breakthrough potential when necessary. The oversight study began in 2012 after program-evaluation criteria were defined in an OSMRE technical position paper. The study is scheduled to be completed in 2017. BACKGROUND The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) authorizes the disposal of coal mine waste by constructing a coarse coal mine waste embankment across a valley and pumping the fine coal mine waste (slurry) into the resulting basin (Figure 1). A concern shared by many engineers, geologists, and mine inspectors familiar with coal mine waste slurry impoundments is related to the common occurrence of underground mine workings adjacent to or beneath the impoundment: the potential for slurry “breakthroughs” into mine works and subsequent breakouts into the surface waterways (Figure 2). On October 11, 2000 a combination of coal refuse slurry and water from the Big Branch impoundment in Martin County, Kentucky broke through into an underground mine and subsequently discharged into the receiving streams. The location of the point of breakthrough, pathways of slurry/water flow within the mine workings, and two points where the liquid exited the mine are shown in Figure 3. An estimated 306 million gallons of water and coal refuse slurry drained from the impoundment into the adjacent underground mine. Approximately 230 million gallons subsequently discharged from the underground mine at two portals."

In 1917 the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Idaho arranged to cooperate in an investigation looking to the improvement of mining and milling methods in the mining districts of the State of Idaho, with an especial view to the wider development of the minerul deposits and greater efficiency in the treatment of the lowgrade ores of the State. This work has been made possible lnrgely through the generosity and active assistance of the mine operators, especially certain companies in the Coeur d'Alene region. As the first step in the work under the cooperative agreement it wa.s decided to gather all data possible on the various mining districts throughout the State, both active and abandoned, in order to ascertain their potential possibilities, especial attention being paid to methods of metallurgical treatment and to the solution of the many metallurgical problems in order to effect a greater commercinl saving. With this plan in view, field work was begun in the latter part of May, 1917, and was continued during the summer. E. K. Soper, formerly professor of mining, University of Idaho, and now dean of the mining department of Oregon Agricultural • College, Corvallis, Oreg., visited the mining districts in central and southwestern Idaho and also some of those in the northern part of the St.ate. D. C. Livingston, professor of geology at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, also visited some of the mining districts in central Idaho during the summer; in addition, much valuable information he had gathered on former trips to many other districts is included in this report. Credit is also due Mr. Livingston for the maps covering the State, as well as the bibliography nt the end of each chapter. Thomas Varley, superintendent of the Seattle mining experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, spent a short time in the field, principally in the mining districts in central and . northern Idaho, and made a brief visit to the southwestern districts with Mr Soper. The field work of Mr. C. A. Wright, metallurgical engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in direct charge of the cooperative work, was chiefly in the Coeur d'Alene region. Mr. Wright visited nearly all of the mining districts in the region and devoted most of his time to studying the milling methods. The results of the investigation are set 1iorth in this bulletin. The bulletin aims to give the l9Calities of the various mining districts, and the nature of the present operations and those that have been carried on in the past. The geology is discussed only in a general way, the descriptions being intended more especially to bring out the types of ore deposits and the character of the ores, a knowledge of which is essential in determining the proper treatment of the ores. The writers do not wish to imply that all districts mentioned in this bulletin were visited during the summer of 1917, for a great deal of the material has been gathered from other reports, especially from publications of the United States Geological Survey. However, it is hoped that this report will be of help to those who are interested in mining in the State of Idaho. The plan is to continue the field work and subsequently publish the results of the investigations in much more detail, with greater emphasis given the metallurgical treatment of the ores and the problems involved.

In this paper, closed expressions have been obtained for the frequency spectrum of a Born-Karman square lattice in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic integrals. This work is part of continuing research by the Bureau of Mines with the thermodynamic properties of metals and minerals. Although other workers have obtained various types of approximations for the general case of the frequency spectrum of a square lattice, no one previously has obtained closed analytic expressions for this spectrum. To understand the optical and thermodynamic properties of crystals, several investigators have studied the distribution of frequencies of normal modes of vibration of the crystal lattice. Born and Karman3 laid the foundation for the theory of lattice dynamics and obtained detailed results for the case of a one-dimensional lattice. Blackman4 used numerical techniques to estimate the frequency distribution of a two-dimensional square lattice. Mbntroll5 analytically determined the frequency distribution of a square lattice for a particular value of the force constants. He also studied the more general problem and obtained some analytic approximations, using the method of moments. However, the calculations by this method were so difficult that it was not always practicable to carry them out.
