The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. The HSBC is an ideal process for the production of BMG strips. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the casting of Ca-based, bulk amorphous strips. The possibility of casting three Ca-based alloys (60Ca-20Mg-20Al, 60Ca-15Mg-10Al-15Zn and 55Ca-15Mg-10Al-15Zn- 5Cu (at.%).) was investigated, using the HSBC simulator. Numerical simulation and mathematical modeling were used to predict temperature variations and cooling rates, under different interfacial gaseous atmospheres (helium and air) near the meniscus region. Given the critical cooling rates and glass temperatures needed to be reached for the vitrification of the respective alloys, this leads to predictions of the critical thicknesses possible with this novel casting process. To validate our predictions, these alloys were then prepared and cast onto the sand-blasted, solid copper substrate mould of the HSBC simulator. The possibility of producing Ca-based metallic glassy strips via the HSBC processes was confirmed, using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy, to characterize the glassy properties of the cast strips. It was found that the HSBC process would be able to provide sufficient cooling to form amorphous strips for the 60CA-15Mg-10Al-15Zn and 55Ca-15Mg- 10Al-15Zn-5Cu alloys, but not the 60Ca-20Mg-20Al alloy.

The raw materials processed, highlights of technology used, and products produced at INCO's Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery in Ontario, Canada, are described in this paper. INCO's Bessemer matte separation process yields various nickel and copper products and intermediates. The latter presents the main supply of raw materials for the Refinery. Key features in the Refinery are Top Blown Rotary Converters and the INCO Pressure Carbonyl (IPC) process. Process improvements made since the commissioning of the Refinery in 1973 are also discussed. The Refinery produces a variety of nickel products, including nickel powders. Residue after carbonylation presents an important intermediate enriched in precious metals and cobalt that serves as feed to downstream operations for recovery of the residue's metal values. Also discussed are detection, measurement and control procedures which ensure safe operation.

On July 5, 1997, Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan publicized the recycling regulation of waste home appliances that include four items, namely, television, refrigerator, washing machine, and air conditioner. It is believed that this regulation pioneers the law enforcement of waste home appliances in the world. The objective of this study is to provide helpful base for amending recycling rates of waste home appliances. This study investigates the collection and recycling costs of waste home appliances in accordance with these newly established routes and facilities, respectively. Cost survey was conducted among collectors and recycling plants of waste home appliances; consequently, the collection and recycling costs were analyzed, correspondingly. Results provide some suggestions regarding recycling route, recycling system, recycling rates paid by manufactures and importers, recycling subsidies to collectors and recyclers. Those suggestions may provide useful policy implications to EPA for the future decision-making regarding the recycling of waste home appliances.

Magnesium was discovered by Davy in 1808. The production processes as they exist are not economically competitive with aluminum The electrolytic magnesium process is divided into two steps; one to make the MgCh feed and the other to apply large amounts of electric current to dissociate the feed into magnesium (450 g) and chlorine (1200 g). The production of fuJIy anhydrous, pure cell feed is a major problem Recently, there has been a growth of thermal processes, mainly the Pidgeon silicothermic production process using FeSi to reduce dolomite in horizontal retorts. Pechiney has a large vertical electrical furnace process that also uses FeSi to reduce calcined dolomite in a molten bath containing alumina. Work is proceeding to develop new or modified processes that will greatly improve magnesium production. The present methods and the research and R&D will be reviewed in this paper.

Changes in copper extraction from 1960 till today are documented. The top ten changes have been: (a) replacement of reverberatory smelting by high intensity oxygen rich smelting (b) growth of the Outokumpu flash smelting to over 50% of the world's smelting capacity (c) successful development of single furnace coppermaking but only for low slag fall concentrates (d) replacement of the batch Peirce-Smith converter by continuous converting, but only in a few cases (e) increased SO2 capture throughout the industry, mainly-as sulfuric acid (f) development of low initiation temperature `big bight' Cs catalysts for treating the continuous high-SO2 strength gases from continuous smelting/converting (g) complete replacement of reverberatory anode scrap and cathode melting furnaces by the Asarco shaft furnace (h) adoption of stainless steel permanent cathodes and automated stripping technology for electrorefining and electrowinning (i) complete elimination of wire bar casting by continuous bar casting/rod rolling (j) development and adoption of extractants for turning weak impure leach solutions into strong pure electrolytes. It is postulated that the biggest possible change over the next 20 years would be complete replacement of smelting/converting by hydrometallurgical processing. However, this seems unlikely due to copper purity, precious metal recovery, and economic concerns. The increasing value of sulfuric acid to many copper companies gives chalcopyrite smelting/oxide-supergene leaching a nice synergy especially with the energy credits now coming from continuous smelters, and their acid plants.
