The last five years have seen a remarkable increase in tunnelling projects in both soft ground and hard rock applications. Part of the increase is a result of recent Research & Development efforts to improve Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) adaptability, capability and reliability. This paper will review the latest innovations in the TBM industry and explain in detail the results of these innovations followed by a forecast where the technology will take the tunnelling industry in the future.

? The economic health and national security of the U.S. depends on the continued availability of, and access to, reliable and affordable energy and mineral resources. However, America is hindered by a costly, inefficient and often redundant regulatory structure that thwarts domestic investment, expansion and job creation. The annual cost of federal regulations in the U.S. increased to more than $1.75 trillion in 2008; averaging $8000 per employee.(The Impact of Regulatory Costs on Small Finns, SBA, 2010) ? The complexity, uncertainty and delays within the current permitting system places the U.S. at a competitive disadvantage with many other countries that have both abundant mineral resources and a more welcoming business and regulatory climate. As a result, American and international mining companies often move overseas or across borders to invest capital, create local employment, and produce the critical minerals America must then import at higher cost, while sacrificing employment and economic stimulus. ? According to Behre Dolbear, the U.S. is ranked lowest globally due to the lengthy permitting period required before mine development can commence. (Where not to Invest, 2010).

"The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10-m (33-ft) finished diameter, 490-m (1,600-ft) long, hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90- ft) diameter and 92-m (300-ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six, high-head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steellined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir.The construction of the tunnel system has been divided into two contracts. The gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining was completed in September 2014. The remaining and undergoing construction include the tunnel connections to the reservoir and the Mainstream Tunnel and installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders. This article focuses on the live connection of the McCook Main Tunnel to the Mainstream Tunnel that was initiated in November 2014 and will continue through the seasonal drier weather conditions in Chicago approximately from October through April. Chicago TARP systemThe MWRD has been addressing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flooding in Chicagoland since the late 1960s and formally adopted the tunnel and reservoir plan in 1972 to protect the region’s most precious drinking water supply, Lake Michigan. Phase I of TARP, which included construction of 175 km (109 miles) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels with diameters up to 10 m (33 ft), was completed in 2006. In addition to protection of Lake Michigan from CSO discharges, Phase I resulted in substantial improvements in surface water quality as well as the quality of life for lake and riverfront communities in Chicago. Water quality improvements and flooding mitigation will be further enhanced as Phase II reservoirs are placed in service, including the three large reservoir systems, McCook, Thornton and Majewski (Fig. 1).The McCook Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the TARP system. Once completed, this $700-million reservoir facility will receive 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of CSO and flood water via the McCook Main Tunnel, which connects the TARP Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir, and from distribution and Des Plaines inflow tunnels which will bring flow from the Des Plaines Tunnel of TARP."

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature's basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. Phelps Dodge’s Morenci copper mine has had six drills, six track-dozers, 16 shovels, two loaders, and 90 haul trucks equipped with either Caterpillar, Aquila, or Modular GPS systems for nearly three years. The Caterpillar Computer-Aided Earthmoving System is an open-architecture system, which allows for inputs to enhance orientation solutions and system functionality. This system has begun a new phase that leads to an intelligent mining system. Optimization techniques of the current system and inputs are reviewed. In addition, some practical issues of implementing new technology in a mining environment have been identified to aid in this new phase.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

To investigate the differences in the radial drag pick cutting performance in dry and saturated sandstone, a suite of linear rock cutting test was performed using linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). Experimental results of 50 data passes, incorporating 350 data cuts were used to compute cutting, normal and side forces required for determination of other performance related parameters. Although the forces required to cut the dry and saturated rock were in congruence for most of the spacing and depths of cut combinations; but the overall averaged cutting and normal forces for saturated rock cutting were found to be 9.9% and 9.4% respectively higher than the dry rock cutting. The increase in the overall averaged forces was attributed to strength variability of one of the saturated block affecting the overall forces. The side forces experienced a negligible drop in saturated rock cutting. An increase of 28% and 9% in the actual and nominal specific energy values respectively was also recorded when cutting saturated rock as compared to the dry rock cutting. The increase in saturated rock specific energy is attributed to production of large amount of fines and few large sized chips directly contributing towards increase in specific energy. The optimum s/d ratio for dry rock tests was found to lie between 6 and 8 whereas for saturated rock cuts this value lied between 5 and 9.

The tailings from beneficiation of Florida phosphate ore contain considerable phosphate values. These tailings are currently discharged into large disposal areas. More than three million tons of P2O5 are discarded with the phosphatic slimes (clays) in Florida each year. These phosphatic clays not only create one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also represent a tremendous loss of P2O5. As the quality and quantity of Florida’s phosphate reserves diminish, recovery of phosphate values from these wastes becomes more vital. This will also significantly lengthen the life of these important phosphate resources. Thus, it is the goal of this study is to recover more than 80% of the phosphate values in phosphatic clays. A systematic study to characterize samples taken from inactive disposal area has been conducted. The data suggest that natural segregation takes place in the settling pond. In other words, coarser particles settle closer to the feeding point of the pond. Flotation tests were conducted using the +325 mesh fraction of samples obtained from sites close to the feeding point (sample# A) and further from that point (sample# B) and (sample# C) which is even further away from the feeding point. The results show the following: Sample# A gives the highest grade and recovery, followed by that of # B and then of # C. There is a great potential to upgrade sample# A where concentrates of high grade (68.9-70.1 % BPL or 31.5- 32.1% P2O5) and recovery (~86.6-95.4 %) can be obtained under the investigated operating conditions (1.0 – 2.0 kg/ton sodium silicate and 1.5—3.0 kg/ton collector mixture of fatty acid and fuel oil). The mineralogical and chemical analysis of all samples is presented in this paper for comparison. Only in this paper, the flotation data of (site # A) are discussed below.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM mining a pair of subway tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations and modern buildings on deep foundations, one constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, and technical basis for excavation support and tunneling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans, geotechnical baseline report development, and risk management will also be discussed.

"A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."

An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.

The 56,000&apos; (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450&apos; (2.9 km) and 33,700&apos; (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char) which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal -3.4 mm gasifier slag (~85% ash) to separate high (~100%) ash slag from low (~50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71% was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1 mm in size.

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) have conducted an Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) for a 6.2 km, 4-station underground extension of the Spadina Subway from Downsview Station to Steeles Avenue. This Environmental Assessment Study was performed in three phases including routes and general station locations, alignments and station concepts and detailed assessment of the effects of the undertaking. URS Canada Inc. has led the consultant team for this Study. The anticipated total duration of the project is approximately 6 years and its estimated total cost is about $1.4 billion. This paper presents the planning process of the project, the environmental and engineering challenges, and the measures taken to address them.

Traditional methods of project procurement of have remained virtually unchanged in the U.S. infrastructure construction industry for more than 50 years. The traditional method, Design-Bid-Build (DBB), uses a two-step process that separates planning and design from construction. Design is generally done by the public agency and their consultants and the subsequent construction contract is procured from the private sector, almost always by a “low-bid” approach. This method has worked well for many projects, delivering quality work for the lowest bid price. This is particularly true for those projects where the work, and the public agency’s management procedures, are well understood by the contracting community and there is relatively low uncertainty in the work or conditions, particularly geotechnical conditions for underground construction. However, concerns exist with the DBB process. It is time consuming because all planning and design work must be completed prior to beginning any construction work and it is of concern for complex or large projects, plus those with significant risk, where the separation of design and construction, in conjunction with pressures resulting from the low-bid environment, often result in substantial cost and schedule increases. Frequently, these increases occur in a non-productive, inefficient, adversarial work environment leading to claims, disputes and costly litigation (Quick 2002).

Earlier this year, Simplot Phosphates achieved a safety milestone at its Vernal, UT phosphate operations. In March, the entire operation reached achieved seven years without a lost time accident. And the mine operations at Vernal reached the 1 million hours benchmark without a lost time accident. This million hour achievement has been 19 years in the making. This achievement reflects the mine’s strong attitude towards safety, the company said. Safety is an integral part of its culture and requires diligence and considerable work. Attention to even the smallest of details cannot be allowed to slip. This is a record Simplot Phosphates said it hopes to improve on every day.

This is the fifth annual tabulation of mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data. There are also 60 new entries. In addition to royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Two articles relative to the evaluation of minerals reserves appeared in December, 1986. R.H. Paschall (In the Aggregate, ME, p 1139) wrote a good article, although it lacked specific royalty data. However, this author takes exception to two ideas in Paschall&apos;s column. Paschall contends that the royalty rate does not affect the mineral appraisal. This present author could not disagree more. Paschall also claims the location of an industrial mineral deposit is the only serious or practical caveat in comparing royalties. Comments received here from readers helped make the list of caveats that are cited each year. The readers will decide which factors influence the mineral value for their commodities of interest. Paschall&apos;s point about the relationship of the parties who are negotiating a royalty agreement is important and very well taken. The other article, written by William Vernon (Pit and Quarry, December 1986), gives a step-by-step process on how to conduct a mineral appraisal. The article cites three reasons for an appraisal: transfer rights; collateral for a loan; and taxation. A fourth reason is to establish adequate compensation for reserves lost through condemnation. This author has appeared in several court cases where compensation for loss of mineral reserves through condemnation required a mineral appraisal. Royalty rate becomes an important factor in the appraisal process, although the Pit and Quarry article refers to that part of the valuation equation as "profitability." Both articles were well written and are recommended reading for those interested in mineral valuations. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation - especially significant for most industrial minerals; • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give: • the location by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province ; • the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; • the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred; and • comments or footnotes for more information. The cost column requires more explanation.
