Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.

Anglo-Rouyn Mines Limited, managed by Rio Algom Mines Limited is a subsidiary of the British-based Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited. This mining operation is situated in Northern Saskatchewan, 250 miles north of Saskatoon and represents the first base-metal mine of any importance served by this relatively new mining province. The outcrop of Copper-bearing Chalcopyrite was first discovered by prospectors in 1915, but was not mined until 1965 due to the absence of any form of road into the area prior to this latter date. The mine, mill and concentrator were designed to handle 900 tons per day of comparatively hard, abrasive ore containing chalcopyrite with traces of gold and silver. The flow sheet, Figure 1, is, we believe, elementary, designed with low cost in mind and utilises much old equipment from closed¬-down mines. Due to some difficulty in attaining the designed grinding capacity, changes were made in the crusher circuit. This, unfortunately, lowered the crushing rate too much. A series of changes have taken place to re-establish the original crusher capacity of better than 100 tons per hour. In the quest for a better recovery certain modifications have been tested in the concentrator circuit. These steps are discussed in minor detail.

The theoretical model based on fluid mechanics, in conjunction with the laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements, elucidate the size-classification mechanisms in an industrial hydrocyclone. The model has no adjustable parameters and involves solving the Navier-Stokes equations to predict the liquid-phase velocities. The spatial-concentration gradients were determined considering the particle phase in the Lagrangian frame and the classification curve was determined by balancing the forces acting on the particle. The force balance requires liquid velocities, which in turn depend on the local volumetric concentration of the particles. Hence, complete modeling work involves coupling both the concentration and liquid-phase velocity calculations until convergence is reached. Finally, the experimental and predicted classification curves were presented for 250-mm hydrocyclone operating at high-percent solids.

(1) A great deal of experimentation has been carried out by the Wet Process Cement Manufacturers in connection with additives which make possible the production of a pumpable slurry at reduced moisture contents. We ourselves have made dozens of tests both at Laramie, Wyoming and Monolith, California. (2) The viscosity or pumpability of a slurry at a definite moisture content and fineness seems to depend on two basic phenomena. One is the physical structure of the raw material itself, which on fine grinding may or may not be excessively hydrophilic (water adsorptive). Usually crystaline or glassy raw materials are non- hydrophilic. The fine grained amorphous raw materials such as shales and clayey limestones very frequently are, however. (3) The second basic phenomenon affecting the hydrophilic tendencies of the raw material is the presence of certain soluble salts, especially gypsum and small amounts of alkalin carbonates or oxides. (4) Various soaps, and phosphates can be used to produce a pumpable slurry of low moisture content when using hydrophilic raw materials as well as can other proprietary materials such as certain long chain carbon compounds. Too frequently however, the price of such additives in conjunction with the amount required prohibits their use in the cement industry.

Under the terms of the 1970 amendments to the Clean Air Act, the EPA established national ambient air quality standards for a number of pollutants. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was one of these pollutants. These ambient air quality standards have had perhaps their biggest impact on the power utilities. In an effort to meet the air quality standards set forth by the EPA, utilities using high sulfur fuels have been forced to install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems. The majority of FGD systems in operation today are nonregenerable systems, that is the by-product of the system is disposed of, usually into settling ponds. Limestone slurry is the most common reagent used to remove SO from the flue gases. The calcium carbonate (limestone) slurry interacts with the flue gas, absorbing the SO2 and forming a by-product of calcium sulfate/sulfite which is disposed of.

Research over a period of ten years resulted in the development of an efficient automatic ore feed regulator for mill grinding circuits. The facilities that a large mining company gave the inventor made it possible to develop the control apparatus under actual mill operating conditions. The Littlewood Regulator automatically determines the optimum power input at which a mill should operate, and controls the rate of ore feed to maintain this optimum power for any predetermined operating conditions. It is to be noted that the optimum power varies with many factors such as ball, rod, and mill liner wear, therefore the regulator is designed to automaticall keep itself properly calibrated. To efficiently control the rate of ore feed of a mill grinding circuit the regulator analyzes and interprets all power changes of the mill motor. The critical electrical measurements for this type of control are made possible by a patented device that has the ability to detect and integrate minute changes in power. In ball mill operation the small but significant changes in power serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the rate at which ore accumulation takes place within the mill, and in rod mill operation they serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the degree of rod spread.

The Outokumpu Skim-Air Flash Flotation machine was developed to separate valuable mineral from gangue as early as practical by floating it with specially designed flotation equipment installed in the grinding circuit. Machines already in service have shown the ability to produce final grade concentrate with an increase in overall recovery and flotation rate while decreasing filter cake moisture and reducing fluctuating feed grades to conventional flotation circuits. The first US production test was carried out in a southwestern copper concentrator with successful results. This report describes the results of the test along with an explanation of the process and the benefits obtainable.

Thickeners are simply large tanks, usually circular in shape, which are designed to allow settling of solids and to operate with continuous overflow of clear water and underflow of thick pulp. The dimensions of the thickener are usually such that dewatering of very fine pulps may be accomplished while still 1 overflowing clear water. Some thickeners such as the Genter, Hardinge and Hydrotator types combine thickening with filtering2 while others such as the Dorr type are pure thickenersl,2,3. A schematic diagram of the traction type Dorr thickener is shown in Figure 1. This type is appropriate for tanks over 15 m (50 ft) in diameter. This tank employs a rotating raking mechanism which moves the settled material toward the central discharge. For this and other thickeners, it is common to have a shallow conical tank bottom in order to conform to the geometry of the raking mechanism, and it is often desirable to elevate the tank for ease of access to the product. When the tank does not rest on the ground, the forces resisted by the cone are large, and thick plates must be employed. The fabrication of these tanks requires temporary supports in order to erect the cone. A flat-bottomed tank could also be used because the settled material would soon form a hardened conical surface. However, because of the presence of large bending forces, even larger plate thicknesses are required than for the conical bottom. Significant cost savings often can be realized by the use of a scalloped-bottomed tank such as the one partially shown in Figure 2. The particular scalloped bottom discussed in this paper (and shown in the Figure) employs radial beams forming the outline of the cone-shaped bottom. These beams are supported directly by columns. Cone segments are hung between adjacent beams. The exact geometry of these segments depends upon the cone angle and radius, the number of radial beams, and their inclination. The geometry is chosen to satisfy certain clearance restraints and to utilize the material as efficiently as possible. The brines from the sub-surface of the Laguna del Rey dry lake are pumped to Química del Rey, S. A. plant, where they are cooled in adiabatic crystallizers precipitating sodium sulphate decahydrate. This salt is dehydrated in multiple effect evaporators and dried in rotary kilns producing high purity anhydrous sodium sulphate. The spent brines from the sodium sulphate operation are concentrated in solar ponds, precipitating astrakanite and leaving a brine with a higher concentration of magnesium ions. This brine is treated with calcium chloride solution to eliminate the remainder of sulphates, leaving a solution of magnesium chloride ready for the manufacture of refractory grade magnesium oxide or periclase. The magnesium chloride is reacted with dolime to produce magnesium hidroxide which is washed, filtered, and calcined to produce soft burned magnesium oxide, which is briquetted and dead burned to produce the periclase.

A fluid mining process has been developed by the writer whereby phosphate deposits are leached in place through the injection of a weak and recoverable acid solution much in the same manner as in the recovery of oil by water-flooding. The phosphate mineralization is dissolved In place, selectively treated in a surface plant and a high grade diacalcium phosphate substatially free of fluorine (hence of feed grade quality) is recovered. Because of its finely divided and powdery state, the plant product is highly desirable as stock material for the manufacture of triple-superphosphate and of high grade phosphatic chemicals. Details of well completion, fluid injection, areal sweep and solution efficiency, plant design and economics are presented The rate of return on investment is particularly attractive under conditions of shallow occurrence of the phosphate mineralization such as in the Bone Valley formation of Florida. The process may also be applied economically to the Phosphoria formation of wide- spread occurrence in the Northwest United States through the application of selective formation fracturing (or Hydrofrac) previous to fluid mining operations.

Recent investigations conducted by Federal, State, and industry organizations suggest that significant coalbed gas resources may exist in the Cretaceous and Paleocene-Eocene coal beds of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain. Exploration efforts have focused on three areas which are in south Texas, north-central Louisiana, and south-central Mississippi (Figure 1). Coal-bed gas production is currently underway in south Texas and in north-central Louisiana. In Mississippi, several test wells have been drilled but no data are available on their production potential.

The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

ABSTRACT A comprehensive program of air flush core and reverse circulation drilling, trial mining and beneficiation test work was carried out in 1980-1982 to re-assess the potential of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit. The results generally confirm previous work by Amax Corporation. The bauxite is a medium available alumina and reactive silica deposit which responds well to wet screen beneficiation. High grade pockets have developed locally, with the potential for refractory grade extraction. A major feasibility study of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit was completed in 1983. Due to the unexpected severity of the downturn in the alumina market, development of the project has been deferred.

Since 1955, Gaspe Mines has produced 150 Mt (165 million st) of ore averaging 0.9% copper. The ore was mined from two open pits and from underground workings. In 1994, four exploration drill holes discovered a buried porphyry/skarn copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) deposit at depths of between 1,000 and 1,700 m (3,280 and 5,580 ft) below the top of Porphyry Mountain. The mineralization and alteration associated with the Porphyry Mountain quartz monzonite does not outcrop. Prior to 1997, about 19,500 m (64,000 ft) of drilling in 12 drill holes had outlined 200 Mt (220 million st) grading 0.73% Cu and 0.08% Mo. Mineralization occurs as veins and disseminations of chalcopyrite and molybdenite.

The choice of the flotation reagent that suits a particular coal has become more complicated with the development of new, more efficient reagents. Frothers and conditioning reagents, in particular, have experienced a dramatic reevaluation of their role in floating various types of coals. The conversion of nickel and cobalt to the water-soluble sulphates forms the basis of some of the many methods of recovering these metals from their oxide and silicate ores. The applicability of these sulphation processes to a range of Australian oxidized ores is discussed. The chemical and hence mineralogical composition of the ores is shown to have a major influence on the degree of nickel and cobalt extraction. Different sulphation processes are compared, taking into account the influence of ore composition, and considering effects on reagent consumption and on subsequent metal recovery processes.

The expansion of surface mining has led to the development of very large off-highway trucks currently capable of hauling payloads in excess of 290t. Mine haul roads have historically been designed empirically, relying heavily on local experience; the trend in increasing truck size will thus render the current pavement systems inadequate. Since truck haulage costs can account for 10%-50% of the total costs incurred by a surface mine, not only would the maintenance costs of existing roads of inadequate design increase, vehicle operating and maintenance costs would also increase prohibitively. There is thus a need for improved design technologies encompassing the construction and management techniques of mine haul roads, appropriate for the wheel loads of vehicles now in use. The aim of the paper is to present the different components of a mine haul road design and management system and to demonstrate the value of its application through case studies. The system has been applied at several South-African surface mines and distinct benefits have been derived. The improved structural design of a new road resulted in a 29% saving in construction costs and also provided better service, whilst the optimal selection and management of wearing-course materials provided better functionality at lower total transportation operating costs.

The value of exported nonenergy minerals from the less-developed countries has increased substantially between 1970 and 1985, but their market share relative to world exports has remained stagnant. Of the top twenty minerals exporters, only four are developing countries. Production capacity in the developing countries is shown to be less sensitive to demand downturns than capacity in the developed countries. Two approaches to the management of cyclical minerals demand are given using examples from India and Papua New Guinea. The authors conclude that pro¬tective policies implemented by developing nations have, barring a few exceptions, relatively little impact on the chronic nonfuel minerals oversupply problem.
