The well-known method of C. Schlumberger, Mise a la masse, has become a popular method again in ore exploration in Norway after many years of dominance by EM methods. The principle of the method is to place a current electrode within a conducting ore body and remove the other electrode to a great distance. (Figure 1). Often it is convenient to place a return electrode on each side of the area explored. The method is best suited for ores that have a conductivity contrast, relative to the host rock, of several orders of magnitude. The potential drop within the ore itself may then be neglected and the ore contact against the rock may be regarded as an equipotential surface. One may say that the ore body is electrically charged. Therefore, in Norway the method is now most often called the Charged Potential Method (abbreviated CP). The most usual way to present data obtained by CP, is to draw equipotential lines based on potential values measured in profiles on the surface. Such a potential map gives an immediate picture of the outcrop of the ore and also indicates disturbing conductors in the neighborhood. It may also be useful to look at the potential profile and its horizontal gradient along the strike axis of the potential map. These profiles may give information about the strike length of the conductor. Figure 2 shows the theoretical profiles of potential and gradient along the axis of the potential picture on the surface over a charged line plunging 15 degrees. It may be seen that the maximum of the gradient curve clearly indicates the lower end of the conductor. Figure 3 shows the corresponding pro- files over a charged line plunging 45 degrees. In this case, it is not possible to see an indication on the curve of the lower end. Only curve fitting could help interpretation in this case.

The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator's position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both. This usually is controlled by the safety and health regulatory authority having jurisdiction. 7) The positions of other components are rearranged

These are exciting times for those of us involved in the discovery, development, beneficiation, sales and end uses of industrial minerals. The known sources of traditional raw materials are rapidly being consumed or covered up with highways and urban developments. We would never knowingly cover up a source of gold, silver, diamonds, or even base metals with a shopping center, but it has been difficult to justify not locating construction atop a limestone, granite, or sand dune deposit. During the last ten or so years most of the users of significant amounts of industrial minerals have established task forces made up of geologists, mining engineers, beneficiation experts, ceramic and refractory scientists, and senior members of their purchasing departments whose duty it is to determine where the raw materials for their particular finished products will come from now and farther down the road, like 20 years from now. Likewise, these same ceramic and refractory scientists are developing new materials which require a never ending change into different raw materials and the traditional materials must be refined by selective mining, exotic beneficiation practices and expensive but necessary post-beneficiation treatments to produce minerals for commercial use that were either theoretical minerals or at best showcase specimens when most of us here today were in school studiously acquiring a vocabulary which included Calcite, Magnesite, Dolomite , Feldspar, (Labradorite had the play of colors the prof could see but which I rarely focused on) Wollastonite, Celestite, Chromite, Olivine, Barite and Lepidolite to name a few.

Raman Spectroscopy has become increasingly popular as a method to rapidly identify and characterize minerals, gem stones and other inorganic materials. Raman spectroscopy provides valuable information about the chemical bonds and structure of materials. In fact, the peak locations and intensities observed in a Raman spectrum can often be used to confirm the presence or absence of particular species in a sample. Some modern Raman spectrometers have been designed to analyze samples less than a micron in size while others are designed to rapidly screen bulk material with no sample preparation. Recent advances in software and automated instrument control have greatly reduced the complexity of Raman spectral analysis and provide an easy-to-use tool for analyzing minerals. We will describe the application of several multivariate statistical analysis techniques that have been developed to make use of the spectral libraries. In these techniques the spectrum is treated as a vector and sophisticated mathematical techniques are used to determine which spectral representations in the reference library best match the spectrum from the sample. The DXR Raman microscope was used to 1) Identify minerals by spectral searching, 2) Identifying several species in a sample using multi-component analysis 3) Mapping different species in an aggregate sample and 4) identifying inclusions in a sample.

Discussion by M.R. Yalamanchili and J.D. Miller The authors, M. S. Celik et al., should be recognized for their efforts to describe the flotation behavior of boron minerals. In the case of borax and other soluble salt minerals, analysis of the flotation chemistry has been difficult because of the high ionic strengths associated with these soluble salt systems. However, considerable progress has been made in this area, and recently a surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model was proposed by Miller and his coworkers to explain the collector adsorption phenomena observed in soluble salt flotation systems (Milleret al, 1992; Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994; Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994a: Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994b). In this work, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines was established on the basis of nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis (Miller et al., 1992). Generally, these results are what would be expected from the simplified lattice-ionhydration theory. This electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble salt flotation systems indicates that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation/bubble attachment results for 21 different alkali halides (Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Yalamanchili and Miller, I994b) confirmed that the flotation response of soluble salt minerals with weak electrolyte collectors can best be explained by the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids rather than by the adsorption collector ions and/or neutral molecular dipoles as originally suggested by many researchers (Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau, 1957; Schubert, 1967; Roman et al., 1968). In addition, the flotation of certain alkali oxyanions (Pizarro et al., 1993) and double salts such as schoenite and kainite can be explained by the same collector colloid adsorption mechanism (Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The borax flotation results reported by Celik et al. need to be examined in terms of the above mentioned surface charge/ collector colloid adsorption model. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be unaware of this recent work that nicely describes soluble salt flotation with weak electrolyte type collectors such as amines and carboxylates. In view of our past work, the flotation characteristics of borax were of particular interest, and, in this regard, the results of dodecyl amine flotation of borax reported by Celik et al. have been examined in further detail in the light of experimental results from our laboratory. In our research, a vacuum flotation technique was used to study the flotation response of borax (Na2B407.10H20), which has a solubility of 39 g/L at 25 °C) with dodecyl amine hydrochloride as collector. These chemicals were purchased from Eastman Kodak and used as received. Saturated solutions of borax at desired pH values were prepared by continuously stirring the salt solutions over a period of about 10 hrs. It should be mentioned that the conditioning time to achieve equilibrium is an important variable and can significantly change the flotation response of some soluble salts (Yalamanchili et al., 1993). Collector was added to the saturated borax solutions containing about one gram of 100x 150 mesh borax particles, and conditioning was done for about 20 minutes prior to flotation. The borax flotation recoveries from saturated brine are presented in Fig. 1 as a function of collector addition at the natural pH of 9.3, as reported both by Celik et al. and as measured in our laboratory. In addition, the region of precipitation for the dodecyl amine hydroborate is included in Fig. 1. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that the flotation response curves are separated by about one order of magnitude in R12NH3CI collector addition. The flotation results of Celik et al. show that the maximum borax recoveries can be obtained below the solubility limit of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector. However, in our experiments borax flotation seems to occur only after the precipitation of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector as might be expected from the collector colloid adsorption model (Yalamanchili et al., 1993) if borax were negatively charged. Further analysis by nonequilibrium and equilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements for borax indicates that borax is negatively charged at the natural pH of 9.3, as discussed below. The reliability of the nonequilibrium electrophoretic measurements has been demonstrated previously for alkali halides and alkali oxyanions (Miller et al., 1992; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The equilibrium and nonequlibrium electrophoretic measurements for borax were found to be consistent and are presented in Table 1. These results provide clear evidence that borax carries a negative surface charge in its saturated brine (pH 9.3), and the sign of the surface charge of borax reverses and becomes positive if the pH is reduced to 8.6. In the United States and in Pennsylvania in particular the coal mine drainage problem is of continuing and growing interest to the coal mining industry, the state government, the federal government and the public at large. The 1965 amendments to Pennsylvania's Clean Streams Law prohibit the discharge of acid mine drainage into the streams of the Commonwealth after January 1, 1967. Because of this new legislation, the coal mining industry and state government are extremely aware of the necessity for new techniques for treatment and prevention of the flow of acid mine drainage from the active mines of the Commonwealth in order to keep the coal mining industry in business in Pennsylvania. Approximately one-third of the total volume of mine drainage presently polluting the streams of the Commonwealth originates from "active" coal operations and two-thirds comes from "abandoned" mine discharges. As early as 1963 it became evident that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the coal industry in Pennsylvania would have to take active steps to abate the mine drainage pollution of Pennsylvania's streams and rivers. This became quite clear during the deliberations in Harrisburg which climaxed a twenty year struggle for effective strip mining legislation. The bituminous strip mining law enacted that year made it unlawful to have any acid discharge from active stripping operations.

T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of' the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

A combination field and office study of mining districts in Southwestern U.S.A., conducted in 1949 - 1950 by United Geophysical Company, embraced all of the essentials for a successful exploration project including factors such as geology water, transportation and many more. Perhaps the best known of several high priority areas chosen from the study was the Twin Buttes or Pima District in Arizona, however, the Turquoise District also ranked very high on this priority schedule. Following the discovery of the Pima Mine in 1951 and 1952, United initiated additional preliminary geological, geophysical, drilling and claim location work in the Turquoise District, but stopped shortly thereafter, when ASARCO began adjoining competetive activity. During the summer of 1957, sometime after ASARCO abandoned their claims in the area, Minerals Exploration Company began intensive exploration in the Courtland-Gleeson part of the District. This program was terminated in 1958. Later Bear Creek Mining Company supplemented the discovery endeavor with their own program during the period 1960 through 1962. This paper summarizes most of the geophysical work done by all of the groups except ASARCO and is intended to complement the recent paper "General Geology and Some Structural Features of the Courtland-Gleeson Area, Cochise County, Arizona" by Mr. Otis McRae of Bear Creek Mining Company.

INTRODUCTION The radon problem concerns the radiation exposure from inhaled short-lived radon daughters and the associated risk for the induction or promotion of lung cancer. In several groups of miners which were exposed in the past to relative high radon levels during their underground work, an excess lung cancer frequency has been observed. On the basis of these findings it has to be stated that the inhalation of radon daughters is the most important radiation hazard in mining. Involved in this radon problem in mines are the difficulties to measure the individual radon daughter exposure of miners and to estimate the dose to critical cells and target tissues in the lung from inhaled radon daughters. And finally the reduction of radon levels in mines confronts us with special technical problems which are difficult to solve. Thus the setting of annual limits for the radon daughter exposure of miners alone is not sufficient to guarantee an appropriate standard of radiation safety. Of same importance are the improvement of air monitoring and the optimization of technical protection measures in mines. This has to be kept in mind for the following considerations on exposure limits. The ICRP has recommended in 1959 for the first time a maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for the occupational exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters (ICRP, 1959). This MPC in air was derived from a maximum permissible dose equivalent of 0.15 Sv (15 rem) per year to the epithelium of the large bronchi which was regarded as the "critical tissue". This old MPC-value was derived using a simplified lung model which paid main attention to the dose contribution from the inhalation of unattached 218Po(RaA) atoms. Since this time more realistic dosimetric models for radon daughters have been developed; some of these models will be presented in special papers on this conference. Furthermore in the last 10 - 20 years substantial epidemiological information on the lung cancer risk among several groups of Rn-exposed miners has become available. Taking into account these epidemiological and new dosimetric findings the ICRP has adopted in March this year new recommendations on occupational limits for inhalation of 222Rn, 22ORn and theirshort-lived daughters. This report will be published this year as ICRP Publication 32 (ICRP 1981). The recommended limits for radon daughters were derived from the basic dose and risk limits as they were proposed by ICRP in its new basic recommendations (ICRP Publ. 26, 1977). In the following this basic system of dose limitation is shortly outlined before the special recommendations for radon daughters are described. [BASIC CONCEPTS AND LIMITS] The new basic recommendation of ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) proceed from the assumption that in the dose range which is relevant for radiation protection, the risk RT of so-called stochastic radiation effects (carcinogenic and genetic effects) in a target tissue T increases proportionally with the mean dose equivalent HT in this tissue: RT = aT HT. If several target tissues are irradiated the total individual (stochastic) risk is given by the sum of risks in these tissues: [R = ?TRT = ? T aT HT]. Thus this concept of individual health detriment takes into account the risk contribution from each relevant tissue. It replaces the old concept of the critical tissue, which neglected the exposure of other tissues. Applying this new concept a dose quantity can be defined which is proportional to the total individual radiation risk from stochastic effects. This so-called "effective dose equivalent (HE)" is given by the sum of the weighted dose equivalents in the relevant tissues: [HE = E wT HT with E wT = 1 T '1] The weighting factor wT of each tissues follows to wT = aT/awB, where awB is the total stochastic risk coefficient for a uniform irradiation of the whole body. For the lung as a single organ comprising several target tissues, the ICRP recommends a total weighting factor w = 0.12 (ICRP 1977/79). This concept of risk or detriment, respectively, has important consequences. To meet the objectives of radiation protection the new ICRP-system of dose limitation is based on the following three principles: 1) The justification of practices involving radiation exposures; no pratice shall be adopted unless it produces a net benefit. 2) The ALARA-principle that all exposures shall be kept as low as reasonably achievable; this requires the optimization of the level of protection. 3) The limitation of individual exposure (annual dose limits). It is important to note that the dose limits for individuals are only one part of this system of dose limitation. Furthermore, these limits cannot be regarded as a boundary between safe and unsafe. They have to be interpreted as the lower boundary of an unacceptable exposure region. This means that in addition to the observance of these basic dose limits it is demanded to optimize the level of protection. Consequently the optimized exposure levels or the corresponding operational limits will be normally lower than

Surface contamination of minerals during fine grinding may occur due to coating of one material on the other. This can alter the surface chemical properties and adversely affect the separation of minerals by physico-chemical processes. In dolomite-silica system, selectivity was completely lost (compared to a synthetic mixture) after wet grinding of the minerals in spite of using a dispersant. Adsorption and surface characterization studies were conducted on silica particles separated after grinding with dolomite. SEM-EDAX analysis indicated the presence of dolomite on silica particles, which could cause the loss of selectivity.

Due to unfavorable geological condition, excessive deformation of mine drifts occurred in a large underground copper and nickel mine. In searching for a solution, a comprehensive underground monitoring program was implemented and the opening convergence and the surrounding rock deformation were monitored. A large number of field data were collected and thoroughly analyzed. The convergence and deformation as function of time and depth were determined and a rock stability index was proposed. Based on the deformation-time and deformation-depth relations, critical deformation times and locations were identified and defined as characteristic values to be used for mine opening and support designs. The characteristic values are critical in the application of two-step supporting system, and the determination of support parameters. The application of the method developed in this study has demonstrated that this practical approach in support design and installation is effective. With the two-step supporting system, a long-term drift stability can be achieved in the mine.

U. S. Steel's coal mining research activities are directed toward providing new or improved hardware and techniques to increase productivity or reduce cost. Because more than 80 percent of U. S. Steel's coal production is obtained from continuous miner sections, most of our research efforts are focused upon that mining system. Current and historical time study data show that our continuous miners only operate about 30 percent of the available face time. This limited equipment utilization is the result of the delays or interferences imposed by the non-coal-cutting phases of the continuous mining cycle. The most time consuming of these delays are: waiting-on-roof-support, tramming between alternate work locations, waiting-on-haulage-capacity, and in some mines waiting for excessive methane concentrations to clear. Because waiting on roof support is our most time consuming delay, several programs are underway simultaneously to address this problem. In one of these we are developing a patented microprocessor-based control method and apparatus to improve roof drilling performance. This increase is attained by using the microprocessor to adjust electrohydraulic valves which control drill thrust and rotation speed. The microprocessor is designed to continuously search for an optimum combination of thrust and drill rpm to maximize penetration rate at all times.

In the last decade public awareness of the need for pollution abatement has increased greatly. The concern that had been previously shared by local and state conservation groups has spread to create a national concern for preservation of our non-polluted environmental assets and regeneration of those that have been wasted. Because other current matters such as inflation, civil rights,' tax reform and the Vietnam situation have been the object of most national concern, an extremely strong national pressure base has not been brought to bear on the pollution control crisis. Yes, the word is crisis, for in many areas pollution is of critical concern. One has only to look at Lake Erie, the skies about our major urban areas and many of our major rivers and streams to see this crisis These are not situations that can be corrected overnight. We are faced with two basic problems that should be attacked simultaneously: (1) Cleaning up the present sources of pollution and (2) preventing the generation of new pollution sources. What approach should be taken? As in any engineering problem, the limits must be well defined before a final solution is attempted. Pollution must be defined on a national basis. This means that basic Federal legislation and control is necessary. This should reduce any competitive advantage that can presently be gained by movement of operations from one state or geographical area to another on the basis of differences in local legislation .and enforcement. By giving real numbers as guidelines, selective enforcement can be avoided. As a starting point, for a definition of pollution let us use the following - "Any change in the environment occurring from other than natural causes." This definition may not be satisfactory to all but surely we must be somewhat dramatic in our statements to counteract the present prevailing philosophy. Our statement of this philosophy - "At what level of pollution can we afford to operate?" On the basis of our general definition we would like to state what we feel should be the philosophical statement - "How little can we change our physical environment as a result of operations?"

This paper presents a history of a successful three year effort in locating a large, economic deposit of high purity limestone. The exploration program has been carried out by Ernest K. Lehmann & Associates, Inc., geological consultants, for Dravo Corporation, owner of the limestone property which is now under development. The permission of Mr. L. P. Struble, Jr, President of Dravo Lime Company, and Mr. M. W. Robinson, Director of Research and Development, to present this paper is gratefully acknowledged. The limestone property is on the Ohio River near Maysville in northern Kentucky, 60 miles east of Cincinnati (Fig. 1). The area lies at the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, a regional structure where the Lower Paleozoic strata crop out below the adjacent younger sedimentary rocks of the Illinois and Apallachian basins. In general, the limestone formations of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge group offer the best potential for industrial limestone in Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and Indiana. These formations are exposed along the axis of the Cincinnati Arch in central Kentucky. Toward the west, east and north, strata of the High Bridge group are progressively deeper, concealed beneath a succession of interbedded fossiliferous limestone and shale. The High Bridge group limestone formations are shallow-marine deposits largely of tidal flat, shallow lagoon and related environments. Principal lithologies include cryptocrystalline micritic limestone and crystalline dolomitic limestone to dolomite. Shale and bioclastic limestone are subordinate but the proportion of shale increases in the basal formations. Characteristic, is the occurrence of several thin beds of bentonite that serve as regional stratigraphic key horizons.

Methods to increase the gas penetration through sinter layers. In the field of agglomeration, sintering has gained importance, specially in Europe; in Best-Europe this trend will continue till the year 1980, since it is quite probable that in the blast furnace burdens with 50-60 sinter, 10-20 % pellets and 20-25 % ore lumps will be employed. In order to meet this demand for sinter, new sinter bands with reaction areas between 300-400 m2 will be constructed. Chemical and physical phenomena during the Suction-Draught-sinter process. Iron ore sintering is generally considered as a burning process where the material contains 90-95 % ash i.e. non-combustible ingredients. Sintering represents a heterogeneous exothermic reaction in which the chemical phenomena as combustion, calcination, hydration, reduction and oxydation are superposed by physical phenomena. The physical phenomena are devided into material transport and simultaniously occurring heat transport processes. The velocity of these combined physico-chemical reactions i.e. the change in the reaction site per unit time determine the efficiency of the sinter process. The gas permeability as an important criterion of heat transport during the Suction-Draught sinter process.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. Coal is a major source of energy in the U.S. and more than 51% of the electricity used in the country is generated from coal. Coal cleaning prior to combustion is necessary and often accomplished using wet physical processes at coal preparation plants to remove impurities such as ash, sulfur, mercury. However, the resultant clean coal product still contains a significant amount of impurity due to the fact that impurities are not well liberated from coal particles ranging from several millimeters to inches in size at which wet cleaning processes take place. A cleaner coal product can be obtained if a cost-effective dry process is developed to further clean pulverized and thus better liberated fine coal at the power plants prior to its combustion. The benefit of such a process is a significant reduction in the cost of expensive post-combustion chemical cleaning processes such as flue gas scrubbing employed to meet the stringent environmental air quality regulations. In this study, a novel rotary triboelectrostatic separator (RTS) was investigated for its application to dry cleaning of fine coal samples acquired from the power plants in the state of Illinois. The pulverized fine coal contains well liberated ash and pyrite minerals and is an ideal feed to the triboelectrostatic separator for further cleaning without the use of water or any chemical reagents. The proprietary rotary triboelectrostatic separator (RTS) is characterized by an innovative high efficiency rotary charger, charger electrification, laminar air flow, and specially designed electrodes. Compared to existing triboelectrostatic separators, the rotary triboelectrostatic separator offers significant advantages in particle charging efficiency, solids throughput, separation efficiency, applicable particle size range, etc. Testing with several fine coal samples has demonstrated that this technology can significantly reduce ash content with a process efficiency similar to or better than froth flotation. Important process parameters such as charger rotation speed, injection and co-flow rate, feed rate were investigated for their effects on separation performance.

Aerial photography is a recognized and integral part of the search for petroleum and for the metallic ores, but its application lags seriously; in the search for the industrial minerals This is, in all probability, a result of the relatively stringent economics of the various industrial mineral industries. The oil and mining companies (particularly the oil companies) can afford generous exploration budgets and thus can experiment with unorthodox approaches such as photogeology. The industrial mineral industry is more restricted, and up to now has relied on less sophisticated methods of exploration. The industrial minerals have been generally defined as those materials extracted from the earth that are neither metals, metallic ores, fuels, nor ground water. Any group chat must be defined in such a negative manner, by citing the things that they do not include, must in themselves be extremely diverse in character. This is truly the case for the industrial minerals; the full list of industrial minerals is incredibly long and tends to increase year by year.

Despite the severe drought conditions that reduced farm requirements for industrial mineral products, most industrial minerals markets in 1988 continued their growth or, at worst, remained flat. Earlier projections of output declines did not materialize in most segments. Preliminary estimates of demand in Europe and Asia show strong growth for most industrial minerals. Profitability in industrial minerals in North America was best in those minerals that had a significant export market or were not strongly regional. Growth and price trends in the more regional industrial minerals markets in the US such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, and cement, more closely followed the broadly disparate regional economic conditions. For example, sand and gravel and crushed stone grew strongly in the Pacific Coast and northeastern markets but not as much as in the Southeast. Total growth for sand and gravel in 1988 is projected at about 3% above 1987 levels. Combined production is up about 27 Mt (30 million st) to 2 Gt (2.2 billion st). Following the relentless trend of foreign acquisition of US cement companies (currently about two-thirds are owned by foreign interests), several aggregate operations have been purchased by foreign companies. Notable among these in 1988 was the acquisition of Rinker Materials Corp. by CSR of Australia. The acquisition of this Florida-based aggregate and concrete operation will expand the current holdings of CSR in the southeastern US, with operations consolidated under the Rinker logo. In addition, Pike Industries of New England and J.L. Shiely Co. of Minnesota were significant aggregate producers that were acquired by foreign firms. New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon Products, was acquired by a subsidiary of Cementes del Norte of Spain. Dravo continued to expand its influence in the lime and limestone markets. It became the major supplier of construction aggregates on the inland river system with its purchase of Cyprus Minerals' limestone aggregate operations in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. Although lime production continued to grow from 14 to 15 Mt (15.7 to 16.7 million st) in 1988, lime imports decreased for the fifth consecutive year to 145 kt (160,000 st). In the more export-oriented industrial minerals markets, performance was generally very good for 1988. Soda ash enjoyed an excellent year, with its price up to $102.50/t ($93 per st). This reflected the tight market situation for soda ash, particularly in late 1988. Soda ash production in 1988 was 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st), reflecting the industry's improved efficiency. Particularly significant was the increase in caustic soda prices that led to increased substitution by soda ash. The export market remained at 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st). Phosphate production recovered to the 42 Mt (46 million st) level, a 12% increase despite a soft export market. The price, however, remained soft throughout the year. W.R. Grace sold its interest in its Florida phosphate mine and its phosphoric acid complex as part of its divestiture of the agrichemicals business. The strengthening of the major producers has continued as lower cost capacity has been idled. Future permitting of phosphoric acid facilities and development of reserves will be necessary to maintain current production levels beyond the mid- to late 1990s. Despite new developments worldwide in the titanium minerals market, strong demand has continued to apply pressure to price, with concentrate and slag prices going up. The demand for high quality slag as feedstock for pigment production has resulted in process improvements in South Africa (Richard's Bay) and in plans by Canada to import high quality ilmenite by 1991 to produce a 90% TiO2 slag. Although growth in industrial silica sand applications was small in 1988, concentration in the industry continued. Unimin continued to acquire silica operations. Unimin is now the nation's leading producer of granular silica. The end users of silica have consolidated further. Owens-Illinois purchased Brockway Inc., a leading container glass producer. Three companies now control 75% of the container glass industry. ECC continued to be an aggressive purchaser of industrial minerals operations throughout the world. It acquired Cyprus Minerals' calcium carbonate business as well as two operations in Italy. In addition, ECC continued its aggressive acquisition of kaolin (Australia) and aggregate producers. 1988 was a good year for industrial minerals markets worldwide. More importantly, though, it was a year that showed continuing consolidations of reserve ownership in the industry around the world. Barite AN. Castelli, Baroid Drilling Fluids Inc. US mine production of barite decreased 9.4% during 1988. Consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 37.9%. Imports are estimated to have increased by 21.2%. World mine production decreased by 9.8%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 4.6%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported ground barite during the first 10 months of 1988 increased from $37.16/t ($33.71 per st) in 1987 to $37.92/t ($34.40 per st), according to Bureau figures. Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 72% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 69% of US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The other 31% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler.
