Metal ions, such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) are found as trace impurities in mineral dust. Since metal ion mediated free radical generation has been implicated in many disease processes, we carried out a detailed investigation of the metabolism of these metal ions by biological redox systems and the possible oxygenated radical generation therefrom. We found that highly reactive Cr(5+) species are generated in the reduction of Cr(6+) by NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase. The reduced metal ion species react with hydrogen peroxide, to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in a continuous cycle. The enzymatic catalysis processes also involves the reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide [(0-1 2)] radical. Thus only a trace amount of metal ions chemisorbed on mineral dusts, such as quartz, can catalyze the generation of the highly toxic oxygenated radical species from cellular hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a new biochemical mechanism for mineral dust induced chronic lung injury.

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. The major mining health and safety problems of concern to United States Government and private industry researchers in 1981 included the difficulty experienced by longwall operators in complying with the Federal 2 .0-mg/m3 respirable dust standard, the accident rate associated with falls of ground and materials handling hazards, and the upsurge in the incidence of disasters after the steady decline in recent years. Although the many mines and manufacturing companies involved in the research projects to be described are not specifically identified, it is important to note their significant involvement. This is not by way of acknowledgement, but rather to establish that these projects, using mostly Federal funds, represent close cooperation between the U.S. Government and the mining industry. The ongoing work to be described on the development of critical longwall dust control technology is a classic example of Government-industry participation through the phases of problem identification, planning, cost-sharing, and implement at ion.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. The risk associated with mining induced seismicity and the related rock bursts has become one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of mining at the Kiirunavaara mine. The causes of mining induced seismicity at the Kiirunavaara mine are very complex and have affected our understanding on the source mechanisms of seismicity and further the mitigation of the seismic risk. Detailed analysis of historical mining induced seismicity at the Kiirunavaara mine was conducted. The focus of this analysis was placed on the classification of large seismic events and the evaluation of the influential factors on the classified seismic events. 145 events with local magnitude larger than 1.5 that occurred between January 1, 2011 and March 31, 2021 were analyzed. For this analysis, seismic events located in the hanging wall were not included, as these have not been observed to cause large damages to the mine itself. It was found that the magnitude of the events had good correlation with the stress change in relation to the production location. The seismic events were classified as mining-front associated, ore-pass associated, mining-front and ore-pass associated and others, according to their hypocenter location. Most of the mining-front associated events, concentrated around the production levels and slightly above and below them, generally correlated with shear cracks, and most of them occurred when the ore flow between two production levels started. The numerical modelling showed that slip of the geological discontinuity, due to unclamping between hanging wall and footwall, could be the major causative mechanisms, which further supports this finding. The ore-pass associated events are located close to the ore passes. Large seismic events located between ore passes have the source mechanism of both fault-slip and non-shear, but events located at the outer side of ore passes were all fault-slip type. By checking with the ore pass scanning data, it was concluded that the most of the events located between ore passes could be pillar bursts. An elastic core concept has been then used to define a critical pillar width. The paper is not intended to be prescriptive but rather to initiate discussion of the possible classification of seismic events at the Kiirunavaara mine and to present new perspectives of the causes of the seismicity for improving the present seismic risk management.

Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

Selenium-rich metallurgical waste, also known commercially as “crude selenium,” is a byproduct of the copper (Cu) refining process. This by-product, contains ~ 90% selenium (Se), precious metals, platinum group metals (PGMs), and other critical elements. This study investigated the leaching efficiency of Se from the sludge under alkaline conditions using different oxidizing agents to enrich PGMs and precious metals in the leach solid residue. The effectiveness of each oxidizing agent during leaching was assessed and compared. Additionally, Eh-pH diagram for Se was established under specific experimental conditions and utilized to inform process optimization. Key variables, including leaching time, temperature, and oxidant concentration, were evaluated for their impact on the efficiency and the selectivity of the oxidative alkaline leaching process.

"Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the US. More accurately, those explosions were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement; despite current explosion prevention standards. There are 4 basic strategies employed to manage the risk of coal dust explosions in many other coal mining countries around the world: removal of the coal dust, wetting of the coal dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, mixing of the coal dust with stone dust to increase the total incombustible content, and explosion activated barriers which make the entire roadway inert. However, American standards only mandate the first 3 of these 4 methods. It is possible that US coal mine safety measures could benefit from the implementation of the 4th method, the use of explosion barriers. This paper will discuss differences/similarities in barrier regulations used in other countries, as well as some potential difficulties with adapting a stone dust bag barrier system to US underground coal mines. Also, details and feedback gathered from two operating mine site trial barrier installations will be shared.INTRODUCTION Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the United States (US); 29 miners were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010, 5 at the Darby Mine No. 1 in 2006, 12 at the Sago Mine also in 2006, and 13 at the Jim Walter No. 5 Mine in 2001.[14] To be more accurate, the explosions that killed those miners were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement.[18, 19, 20, 21] These deaths occurred despite current explosion prevention strategies, standards, and regulatory oversight. This poses the question, can more be done in the US to prevent coal dust explosions and their widespread damage. In review of current practices and regulations from several large coal mining countries, a disparity in prevention strategies arose. The main difference between the US and other countries was that the US does not encourage, mandate, or regulate the use of explosion barrier systems as an additional coal dust explosion mitigation measure. This raised many questions. First and foremost was whether or not the US coal mining industry and its miners could benefit, in terms of safety and fatality prevention, from the implementation of the explosion barrier systems that are used in other countries. Furthermore, are there significant differences between the coal mines in countries where explosion barriers are used and US coal mines, which would preclude the system from being adapted and implemented in the US? Also, what are the similarities and differences in explosion barrier systems, use, and regulations between other countries that use them?"

The objective of this paper is to back analyze the August 6th, 2007, collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, in order to better understand the geometric and geomechanical factors that contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program, along with the best available information, is used for the back analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six-step base model of the mining in the Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters, rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis, a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal-size pillars, 2) the abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse and 3) from the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

In the plant where the 800m diameter cyclone was tested, 500 STPH of 50m x 0 raw coal was pulped in a heavy medium tank and pumped originally to four 700mm heavy medium cyclones. For the test one of these units was replaced by an 800mm diameter cyclone with the subsequent feed pressure for both units sets at approximately 15.0 psi. Since this was a feed to zero plant, an appropriate bleed of heavy medium to the dilute medium circuit was established to en- sure that the cleaning of the 500m x 0.5mm raw coal would not be adversely affected by high levels of 0.5mm x 0 fine coal present in the heavy medium. The medium gravity measured varied between 1.41 and 1.43. During a three-hour test on June 10, 1983, the raw coal sample was collected from the feed belt while the clean coal and refuse samples were collected separately at proper locations along the product streams of the two different diameter cyclones. All of these samples were shipped to the laboratory for screen and sink- float analyses. The raw coal screen and ash analyses are shown in Table 1.

Steel consumption forms a significant part of the operating cost of a minerals processing plant. An estimated one-quarter billion kilograms of steel in the United States and over one-half billion kilograms in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. The depletion of ore grades and the necessity of finer grinding of abrasive ores are expected to increase the steel consumption even higher. Through continued research and development by the mining industry and the suppliers of steel products several remedies to reduce steel consumption have evolved. This paper critically reviews the mechanisms involved in steel wear, and currently available methods, materials and operating conditions for reducing steel consumption. Particular attention is given to liner design modifications and substitution of steel liners with rubber liners.

"The Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area, near the Afghanistan border. The deposit of SIOM is containing a geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61 %. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development (SD) is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a SD is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes SD activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators could be filtered as the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM have been analyzed. Keywords: Iran, Sustainable Mining, SIOM, Evaluation, Islamic Values INTRODUCTION Mining Industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron etc., with 37 billion tons of proven reserves and more than 57 billion tons of potential reservoirs. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5.316 active mines and 84.922 employees in the whole country in 2012-13 (2) and according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011 the share of this sector in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 per cent (3). Sangan Iron Ore Mines (SIOM) The deposit of SIOM is one of the largest iron-ore deposits in Iran, also considered to be one of the Middle East’s richest deposits, which contains a total geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61%. It is located 300 km southeast from Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, and 18 km northeast of Sangan town, in Khaf County, at latitude N34°24’, longitude E60°16’ in the north-eastern Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, 30 km west of the Afghanistan border (4) (Figure 1). SIOM is owned by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO). IMIDRO intends to develop an open pit mine complex and supporting facilities in SIOM for the production of about 20 Mtpy of iron oxide concentrate and pellets in four developing phases (5)."

Spent potliners (SPL) were declared hazardous waste under RCRA (K088) in July, 1990. The glass formation characteristics of the SPL was studied. The SPL glassy matrix were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Results showed that SPL can be fixed in a glassy matrix with the addition of sand and limestone. The optimum amounts of additives were determined for obtaining the best glass formation characteristics.

A computer package has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The package involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. The simulation model based on an iterative technique, maximizes the profits within each long scheduling period (eg. year or sixth month period), and at the same time defers stripping as long as possible. A minimum exposed ore quantity is kept at the beginning of each mining period. The final long range schedule satisfies a set of constraints for each period, mainly ore quality and quantity constraints for ore and waste. An interactive smoothing procedure at the end of each period results in a schedule that is feasible in terms of mining practice. Finally a cash flow analysis model carries out cash flow calculations so that the user can select the best alternative. The linear programming model, based on a certain number of shovel regions, defined interactively by the model user, calculates the optimum production schedule for each short period under consideration, so that a set of constraints is satisfied.

Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

This paper will review thickening theory, from the ( ) of the practicing engineer, with particular emphasis on ( ) uncertainty or disagreement. It will attempt to outline broadly what we know and what we don't know. This should serve two purpose First, it will warn the process engineer where he might get into trouble. At least it will alert him to the risk involved in uncritically accepting any of the recommended design procedures. Second, it will identify for researchers some areas in which further work might be fruitful. Not too many years ago there would have been little to write on such a subject. We had been designing thickeners for decades, using the classic Coe and Clevenger procedure. As far as we were generally aware, they all turned out to be about the right size. And so if there was anything we didn't know, It certainly wasn't hurting us much. Today we know better. While it is true that in most cases units designed by the Coe and Clevenger procedure (1) will perform satisfactorily, we now know of cases in which they don't. And during the past few years there have been many developments and advances in basic thickening theory. So there is now a lot more room for disagreement, and a whole lot more to be uncertain about. What is "thickening" "Thickening" means different things to different people. For this paper we define it to mean sedimentation behavior characterized by line settling. Solids subside with a clear line of demarcation between settling solids and supernatant. Although the supernatant will usually be clear, in some cases it may be turbid. Line settling must entail that all particles just below the pulp-supernatant interface have the same subsidence rate, so that
