This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. "As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex multiple seam mining geometries there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. For the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed and validated a number of software tools to aid in the development of safer mining environments with respect to improved roof support performance, pillar stability in longwall and room and pillar mines, formation characterization, the prediction of roof conditions, etc. These tools are available, free of charge, to the mining industry as stand-alone software packages. As cloud computing gains momentum, there is a definite need to develop internet based applications for mine design that would be easily accessible to any user at any time, including underground where permitted. This paper introduces a new web-based product which will allow for faster and easier access to existing ground control designs, on-the-fly calculations in the field as needed, and instant online collaboration between operations personnel and planning engineers. It is expected that the industry will rapidly embrace this product and, as it is common with all new innovative technologies, it will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. INTRODUCTION Since its release to the public in the late 1980's, the World Wide Web has drastically changed from a collection of static HTML web pages to a dynamic vehicle driving e-commerce, collaborative working relationships, and the mass distribution of information and media (Offutt, 2002). Recent developments in Internet capabilities, such as Cloud Computing and Software as a Service, have begun a migration away from desktop-based software in adoption of the web application (Hayes, 2008). Web applications, or web apps, are designed on the client-server architecture paradigm in which the client, or user, can interact with an application through web browsers without disrupting or installing software on potentially thousands of client computers (Nations, 2015). Currently, web-based software applications are being utilized in all business sectors and markets from commerce, finance, media, and even engineering. In fact, the Alabama Department of Transportation has developed a web-based geotechnical geographical information system (GeoGIS) for the management of and access to geotechnical and subsurface data for transportation projects across the state (Graettinger, et al., 2001). Similarly, Dyno Noble has developed a service application for explosive engineers. The Explosives Engineers' Guide application equips users with a full range of product information as well as on-demand blasting calculations for powder factor, airblast prediction, ground vibration, etc. Through the incorporation of a web server, one is able to utilize the functionality of the desktop-based software through a web browser located on any personal computer, tablet, or Smartphone (Vaughan-Nichols, 2002)."

The Pacific Northwest as defined in this review comprises an exceedingly large and geologically complex terrain that occupies the 'Western Cordillera mobile tectonic belt. This metallogenic province is approximately 2100 miles long and 350 to 500 miles wide. It extends north-northwest from northern California and Nevada, through western Idaho and Montana, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southwestern Yukon Territory, to southern Alaska, and west from the western flank of the Northern Rocky Mountains to the continental margin (Fig. 1). Many detailed and thorough exploration programs that have been conducted by mining and petroleum companies for over a decade have demonstrated that porphyry-type deposits are both numerous and wide-spread throughout this province. Although the Granby Mining Company extracted about 34 million tons of copper sulfide ore from Copper Mountain during the period 1900-1957, intentional large-scale production of porphyry-type ores was first initiated in 1962. It began at Bethlehem Copper Corporation's East Jersey orebody in the Highland Valley District of south-central British Columbia, approximately eight years after Mr. H. H. Huestis rediscovered that broad zone of copper-molybdenum metallization and recognized its potential significance.

Traditionally, secant piles have been utilized to provide temporary support during excavation for shafts and cut-and-cover tunnels. As an alternative, the secant piles can be included into the permanent structure, where they serve as the envelope sustaining the lateral loads and gravity of the permanent structure in addition to supporting the excavation during construction. This has several benets, such as shorter building times and lower excavation costs. Recent construction of an approach structure and an underground station as part of Montréal, Canada’s Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), one of the biggest transit systems in North America, was completed with remarkable success using this. In this paper, a case study based on a project that employed secant piles as the permanent liner is presented. Techniques to guarantee a watertight construction with over a century of service life are described, along with a variety of structural and waterproong methods applied to create an economical design.

As part of its goal of helping maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines is evaluating alternative technologies to treat oxidized taconites. Since process control is an essential element in the application of these process technologies, research was performed with a prototype monitoring system. A Californium-252 neutron source and a thermal neutron capture- gamma ray spectra analysis method was utilized to measure the amount of iron and the percent solids in the process slurries. The concentrate and tailing streams in a 410-kilogram-per-hour (900- pound-per-hour) pilot plant employing a selective flocculation and cationic flotation process were monitored. The results obtained showed that the thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reaction can be used to provide process control parameters.

The Relief Canyon gold deposit is located approximately twenty- four kilometers east of the town of Lovelock in Northwestern Nevada. At Relief Canyon, the Late Triassic Grass Valley Formation has been thrust over the Late Triassic Natchez Pass Formation. The lower plate Natchez Pass Formation is composed of massive gray dolomitic limestone which is locally silty and sandy. The upper plate Grass Valley Formation is composed of shale, siltstone, argillite and quartzite. Gold mineralization at Relief Canyon occurs along the highly brecciated thrust contact between these two formations. Weak gold mineralization often occurs above the thrust in the Grass Valley Formation, however, most of the ore grade mineralization is present below the thrust in the brecciated Natchez Pass Formation or where the two formations are mixed as a result of movement along the thrust. Several types of gold mineralization have been recognized at Relief Canyon. A large amount of the ore is present as a jasperoid breccia, however, significant amounts of ore occur as a mixed breccia composed of upper plate rock, fresh limestone, clay and jasperoid breccia. Gold ore also occurs in a fresh limestone breccia which contains a large amount of clay. Below masses of jasperoid, jasperoid stringers containing gold extend into the fresh limestone. Gold mineralization at Relief Canyon appears to be truly disseminated and has the typically associated trace elements of arsenic, antimony, mercury and fluorine. The Relief Canyon deposit can be classified as a structurally controlled disseminated gold deposit. Other deposits that fit this classification are the Pinson and Dee gold mines.

Experts, like many of the speakers at the SME Annual Conference, are frequently called upon by lawyers to assist them in litigation. Due to the technical nature of many cases, the testimony of an expert with knowledge and experience in a particular field is necessary to help a judge or jury understand and decide certain issues. Environmental litigation is no exception. Experts routinely are called upon to offer testimony to establish the existence of contamination and its source, as well as the potential health and environmental risks associated with the contaminants. This article will briefly discuss the factors courts apply to determine whether to admit expert testimony after the recent Supreme Court decision in Daubert v. Memell Dow Pharm., Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993). The Court's decision in Daubert overruled a long-standing test that had based the admissibility of scientific evidence on its "general acceptance" in the field in issue. Next, the article will discuss in general terms what a party must do to "link a particular defendant's conduct to the contamination involved in order to recover from that defendant. This link, known as causation, varies depending upon the type of claim being asserted. Expert witnesses are used extensively to help establish causation. JUNK SCIENCE OR GOOD SCIENCE- HOW DOES A COURT DETERMINE WHAT TO LET IN A frequent complaint in litigation involving technical or scientific issues is that one party or another is trying to use so-called "junk science" to prove its case. While some expert testimony might be so clearly lacking in support or so "off the wall" that a court can easily determine to exclude it, other testimony, especially testimony on the "cutting edge," is much more problematic. In 1923, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals decided the case of Frye v. United States, 293 E 1013 (1923). "In 2018, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 3 percent from 2017 to $82.2 billion. The estimated value of metals produced domestically decreased by 4 percent, and the estimated value of indusrial minerals produced domestically increased by 7 percent (Table 1).Some idle U.S. metal mines and processing facilities restarted in 2018, including two primary aluminum smelters in Indiana and Missouri, a rare-earths mine in California and a zinc mine in New York. In contrast, four iron ore mines in Minnesota and a pelletizing plant in Indiana were shut down. Increased oil and natural gas drilling activity in 2018 led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling, including barite and industrial sand and gravel. Production of industrial minerals primarily used in infrastructure and residential construction — including, cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum — increased in 2018. Overall, mining activity trended upward for the second consecutive year because of increases in oil and gas extraction and industrial mineral mining (Table 2).Mineral industry performanceDiscussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as natural aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of natural aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities, thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1)."

The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

Copper has been mined in the Philippines since at least as early as the Ming dynasty (1368 A.D. to 1644 A. D.). The principal source areas of this early production were in Camarines Norte (Paracale), in the Mountain Province, which now boasts the largest number of Philippine porphyry copper deposits, in Masbate and in Surigao, The Spanish Era began in 1521. Although they were primarily interested in gold, the Spaniards operated several copper mines including the San Remigio mine on Panay and the Lepanto mine in northern Luzon, beginning in 1842 and 1865 respectively. Prior to World War II most of the Philippine copper production was supplied by these same two mines together with the Hixbar mine, Rapu Rapu Island which began operation in 1939. The Hixbar and San Remigio mines are cupriferous pyrite deposits and the Lepanto is a vein-¬form replacement deposit (Kinkel et al. ,I 1956). No significant copper production was derived from porphyry copper occurrences prior to world War II.

In 1925, Niggli (1925, pp, 1-69), formulated a physico-chemical, explanation for the origin of hydrothermal ore deposits, from a concept that had appeared earlier in the literature in the writings of Von Groddeck, Stelzner, Beck, de Launay, Kemp, and Lindgren. Niggli proposed that pressure at depth could force volatiles from deep-seated magmas. The volatiles would In turn form pegmatites and then ore deposits as the fluids cooled. This is one view of a general theory of ore genesis that gained secondancy for years among such prominent geologists as Fenner (1926, p, 697) and Emmons (1936, pp. 29-70). It was, proposed that ore deposits were precipitated from solutions or fluids that had escaped or been separated from a deep-seated magma by means of liquid immiscibility or crystallization or gas transfer. This theory is based on the presence of igneous rocks close in space and age to hydrothermal ore deposits in many mining districts of the world. As is well known, there are many ore deposits apparently of hydrothermal origin that are neither spatially nor chronologically related to igneous rocks, In still other localities where there are no hydrothermal ore deposits, igneous rocks occur that are similar in composition to those in mining districts. In view of such facts, the applicability of the Niggli theory to all hydrothermal ore deposits may well be questioned. The chief purpose of this paper is to test the Niggli theory by studying the primary petrology, hydrothermal alteration, and distribution of copper and zinc in silicic igneous plutons supposedly genetically related (in the Niggli sense) to nearby hydrothermal ore deposits, Silicic Tertiary plutons in three New Mexico mining districts were chosen, the Hanover-Fierro intrusive at Hanover and Fierro, the Granite Mountain pluton at Magdalena, and the four outliers of the Lordsburg stock at Lordsburg. First, it had to be established whether the observed plutons were or were not the source of the adjacent ore deposits. This was done by studying the relation between the copper or zinc distribution-and the primary or secondary features in the plutons studied, and the time relations between instrusion and ore deposition. Primary igneous features of a pluton are defined as the minerals, texture, shape, and character of the pluton which were formed prior to the complete solidification of the rock, secondary features include all changes that took place in a pluton after solidification. They are identified by their cross cutting nature or as replacing primary minerals, Under the Niggli concept, it is proved that the ore ions did not originate from the parts of the pluton now visible as immediately adjacent to the ore deposits; it must then be established, if possible', that the ore ions were separated from deeper parts of the intrusive, Some idea as to whether the copper or zinc ions originated from a related magma at depth may be gained by a comparison between the primary (that is, pre-alteration) zinc and copper abundances found in ore localizing intrusive studied and the average abundances for copper and zinc in silicic igneous rocks most recently given in the literature. Finally, the relation between ore deposition and hydrothermal alteration was studied on a regional as well as on a local scale.

It is the nature of mining to reshape the landscape. Mining is an earth moving process with many of the same activities associated with the regrading of a site for a shopping center, drainage channel, housing project or ballfield. The difference exists only in purpose and duration of activity. The purpose of mining is to, produce a valuable product. The purpose of regrading for construction of a project is to create a predetermined landscape for a specific end use. In both situations the objective is to move earth materials as efficiently as possible. The question is then raised, if similarities exist, can mining operations be directed to shape predetermined landscapes as an integral part of its earth moving activity. This paper will explore the opportunities and issues of shaping sand, gravel and hardrock construction aggregate sites for productive end uses. It is based upon the premise that, as an earth moving operation, the process of extracting sand and gravel includes an inherent capability to shape productive lands as an integral part of the mining operation. In the course of any mining operation non-commercial materials, including overburden, fines and excess sand are handled to extract and process the commercial products. This activity exists regardless of whether or not there is a plan to reclaim the land. Moving this dirt is a basic operational cost. This cost need not be significantly increased when the material is deposited to shape land rather than be stock- piled just to clear the way for mining the deposit. Moving of dirt to create useable land can be guided by the same criteria used to remove the dirt from the deposit: for example, limiting the- hauling distance. Over a period of time earth handling costs can be reduced by minimizing the need to transport the stockpiled material a second time to the new landform location.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by more than 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy.

The Jiboia heavy mineral sands deposit is a new discovery associated with the São Francisco River delta on the northern coast of Sergipe state. The identified resources are part of the much larger mineralized trend. Mineralization is hosted in paleodunes deposited on Holocene marine terraces (Fig. 1). The dunes are up to 30 m above sea level, and mineralization occur from 6 m above sea level upward. The main ore minerals constitute pseudorutile, ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite. This work presents a thorough characterization of the mineralogy and granulometric distribution of the Jiboia orebody.

Cable bolts anchored with traditional two component polyester resin cartridges have successfully supported difficult roof conditions in underground mines. Resin cartridges provide a cost-effective cable bolt anchoring system with consistent anchorage performance characteristics when properly installed. The most commonly used cable bolts in the U.S. mining industry are 270 ksi (1,862 MPa), 0.7 and 0.6 inch (18 and 15 mm), seven-strand smooth cable with resin mixing bulbs (also known as bird cages), and 40- and 30-ton nominal capacity, respectively. However, there are other types of cable bolt anchoring systems aside from bird cages. Recently, many questions have been raised regarding the anchorage characteristics of various types of cable bolts. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), the affiliated engineering company of Jennmar Corporation, conducted a variety of controlled tests developed to closely model actual underground installations. These tests compared the performance of three commonly used cable bolt varieties, including plain, bird caged and indented seven-strand cable. Details of the laboratory testing and comparative analysis of the results are provided.

This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.
