Commercialisation of outcomes from research projects is a process often poorly understood and managed, but has the potential to achieve significant benefits for the industry and community as a whole. JKTech Pty Ltd was established in 1986 to transfer viable research outcomes from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at The University of Queensland, Australia. This paper describes successful and unsuccessful examples of commercialisation by JKTech over the years, and draws some conclusions as to the factors that contribute to success and failure in technology transfer.

Can the United States mining industry achieve its long-stated goal of zero fatalities ? and what will it take to do so? Does it require new laws and regulations, as some propose, and a continuation of the commandand- control model that has been born out of more than 40 years of regulation and enforcement under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969? Or, is it time to consider a new model to manage safety and health and drive continuous, sustained improvement? These are questions that many are debating as mine safety performance, while improved, appears mired in a trough where improvement followed by declines seems to have become the rule rather than the exception. Without doubt, U.S. mines have made significant progress in safety performance during the last four decades, yet the stalled decline in fatality numbers, the industry?s report card of its success or failure, has led some to question whether the industry will achieve zero fatalities in U.S. mining by relying solely on the Mine Act?s framework and implementing its regulations. These are questions the CEO-led task force, set up by the National Mining Association (NMA), considered as it sought to identify impediments to zero fatalities posed by the current regulatory regime. Out of that effort came CORESafety, a common safety and health framework that relies on a management system approach to improve safety and health performance. The goal of CORESafety is to achieve zero fatalities and a 50-percent reduction in the rate of injuries in U.S. mining within five years ? 0:50:5. CORESafety is built on the plan-do-checkact model, which has been successfully deployed by industries, mining and nonmining alike, to drive continuous improvement in safety and health performance. The improvements in safety performance that can be achieved by shifting from a command-and-control regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the plando- check-act model have been documented in numerous industries. For example, the United Kingdom quarrying industry (Fig. 1), not satisfied with the number of reportable accidents being experienced 1995-2000, established a hard target of a 50-percent reduction in the number of reportable accidents during the period 2001- 2005. Having met this target, the industry then established a further target zero for the period 2006-2010. The mechanism to achieve these reductions? The plan-do-check-act model.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Calandra was instrumental in upgrading American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards in roof control for both state and federal regulations. Through his work with industry associations such as the National Mining Association, National Coal Council and Center for Energy and Economic Development, among others, Calandra has contributed his time, expertise and financial support to ensure a balanced political and regulatory climate for mining. The Mineral Park Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine located in northwestern Arizona, approximately twenty miles northwest of Kingman, Arizona. The concentrating facility has been regarded, with the expansion in 2011, as a plant capable of treating fifty thousand short tons of feed per day for the mixture of supergene and hypogene ores available. The grinding circuit consists of two 32? x 14? SAG mills and four 20? x 28? ball mills. As ores became harder with greater depth in the adjacent pit areas, however, the SAG mills became severely throughput limited. The traditional treatment for similar properties is the installation of a recycle pebble crushing circuit. Because the cost of such an installation is quite elevated, and preliminary testing and research was inconclusive regarding the predicted throughput increases, management and technical personnel set out to find another solution to the problem. The result entailed a redesign of SAG lifters/liners and a nearly unique circuit change which was, at best, a difficult step that defied current grinding logic. This paper describes these changes, events leading up to them, and the results.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. The introduction of computer technology to the mining industry has produced many benefits for the mining engineer. The most significant is the dramatic increase in productivity realized by the individual user. This is important during times of competitive market conditions. Software for the minerals and energy industries has evolved substantially over the past decade. But even today it remains difficult to find a system that features the flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively (and cost-effectively) handle the needs of professionals in each phase of the mining industry - from exploration to reclamation. Several national software developers are now addressing this challenge. One Denver-based company, MINEsoft Ltd., offers a software package that is currently being used in each phase of the mining industry. The basic technology used in MINEsoft's database management system was developed in the 1960s. But during these early years of the computer industry, most of the technology was available only on mainframe computers, and then only as separate entities. MINEsoft's system unifies these various systems in one package that can be used on most computers manufactured today. Database Management System TECHBASE is a flexible, integrated database management system designed specifically for technical applications. The system features a database manager with no practical limit to the amount of data it can store, retrieve, and manipulate, according to the company. TECHBASE in¬cludes Applications Packages (TAPs) designed to meet the needs of professionals in a host of industries. Clients use the TECH BASE system to prepare many reports, including important EPA information. The package reduces data to a manageable level and enables users to increase productivity with a smaller staff. Mining engineers no longer need to do things by hand. What used to be a day's work can be accomplished in an hour or two. Exploration "Using the TECHBASE system to generate maps has probably saved us the expense of three or four draftsmen," says Ralph Fitch, regional manager and senior staff geologist with Chevron Resources in Portland, ME. "The system has great flexibility. You can treat it much like a spreadsheet. If you are halfway through with a particular project, the system allows you to add fields and calculations with ease but without starting over." Fitch uses TECHBASE for the "straightforward" plotting of results and generation of geochemical and geophysical profiles. "In exploration," he says, "these are the two key elements ... the generation of maps and data profiles. The system allows you to plot as many elements and variables in these areas that you like." Other aspects are important, too, says Fitch, including drill hole sections. "We use all the basic capabilities the system provides in the complete package," he explains. The power generation industry may be required to reduce CO2 emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation, which emits 82% of the power sector CO2, would be a likely target for CO2 reduction. Compliance with the Kyoto protocol will require a 30% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level even with moderate load growth. This paper describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs to assess how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered.

Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

Reclamation of potentially acid producing coal processing waste requires a 4-foot cover, and/or treatment to allow vegetation establishment. If not planned properly, soil covering alone does not prevent refuse acidification or formation of acid seeps. Adequate neutralization enhancement prior to soil covering can maintain an alkaline environment in the soil refuse interface and prevent acidification. Direct vegetation establishment using only limestone amendment (without soil cover) can successfully reclaim aged and weathered fine (Blurry) and coarse (gob) refuse if adequate neutralization treatment is provided for the oxidized surface zone. Acid seeps, representing an "after-the-fact" verification of an imbalance of acid-base equilibrium may also be corrected using upslope alkaline recharge techniques. Concentrated alkaline recharge pools have been constructed above previously soil covered acid gob at the Peabody Will Scarlet Mine to abate acid seeps. Preliminary monitoring results (1989-1992) from a concentrated alkaline recharge pool demonstration project in the Pit 4 area of the Will Scarlet Mine have documented a 50 to 80 percent reduction in acidity in the principal recharge pool groundwater zone. A 22% reduction in acidity has occurred in the primary seeps located downslope from the alkaline recharge pools. The initial improvements in water quality are seen as a positive indication that groundwater acidity will decrease further and amelioration of the acid seep will continue.

In September 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company, started development of the Mount; Fright iron ore mine. The estimated ore reserve is in excess of 1,000,000,000 long tons with an average grade of 31.5% Fe. The run of mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production rate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material of which 50% is waste. The mine is located in the Province of Quebec, close to the Labrador border approximately 600 miles north-east of Montreal. The development of the mine necessitated the construction of an all electric one thousand housing unit townsite along with associated services such as a shopping center, swimming pool, arena, school, etc... A one-hundred mile long, 315 K.V. Dower line was built between the mine site and the Hydro-Quebec 735 K.V. existing power line between Churchill Falls and the Montreal area. The construction near the mine of a beneficiation plant was necessary to upgrade the 31.5% iron ore to a marketable product of 66% iron.

A modular computer program APEX (AMAX Process Evaluation Executive), has been developed at AMAX Extractive R&D, Golden, Colorado to facilitate rapid simulation of steady state material and energy balances of existing and/or proposed metallurgical process flowsheets. Currently, APEX is being used for the design, analysis, and evaluation of several of AMAX?s Nickel, Molybdenumand Tungsten processes. A unique feature of APEX is that it allows specifications of flow rates and compositions for different solid size fractions in addition to aqueous organic and gaseous phases. Thus, a metallurgical process which may involve crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, washing, solvent extraction, precitation and refining operations can be simulated in a single computer run using APEX. APEX requires two input data files. The first is a process data file which includes physical and thermodynamic properties of the various chemical components of interest. This data file is unique to the process under study and does not require changes for alterations in the process flowsheet. The second data file is specific to a simulation case and includes descriptions of the flowsheet, various feed streams and the process equipment's operating conditions. In addition to temperature, pressure and percent solids, calculated information for each stream includes weight and volumetric flow rates, chemical compositions, specific gravities and enthalpies of solid, liquid and gas phases. For each process equipment in the flowsheet, APEX prints its operating conditions and detailed information about the streams that enter and leave the unit. Models of several general unit operations are preprogrammed in APEX. Also, the modular design of APEX permits quick and easy additions of simulation models which are specific to new and/or unique process operations. To study process stability and optimization, APEX permits several cases of a flow-sheet to be run together. Three simulations of the Moa Bay Nickel process have been excluded to illustrate the ease and flexibility of using the APEX system.

The detection of hazardous geological anomalies through remote sensing techniques is the subject of current research efforts sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this review, hazardous geological anomalies are discussed with respect to the "view" presented along with potential operational concepts for each technique. The design and development of a borehole radar is described with emphasis on the potential range and resolution capability of the system under realistic underground conditions. Results of field tests at two coal mines and at a hard rock future subway location are presented.

Three nutrient amendments and a biological seed inoculant were evaluated for use in establishing vegetative cover on waste rock substrates. Randomized blocks were placed on three substrates. Treatments included two types of organic fertilizer, mineral fertilizer, Azospirillum bacterial inoculant, plus controls. The seed mix consisted of native grass species adapted to low nutrient conditions. Canopy cover has been monitored for three growing seasons. Results indicate : 1) two of three substrates support plant growth following amendment with organic fertilizers; 2) organic fertilizers increase cover substantially over mineral fertilizer; and 3)Azospirillum had no effect on canopy cover.

One of the key operations in any milling circuit is grinding. Over the last two decades, large diameter Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills have become the preferred primary grinding mills. The drive systems became more complex as the size of the mills became larger, during which time operating and design experience for SAG mill accumulated. Considerable reliance is now placed in power electronics to provide flexibility in SAG mill operation to meet the demands of lower operating costs. Whereas earlier most SAG mills were designed to operate at fixed speeds, present day SAG mills can operate at a fixed speed or variable speed through the use of an AC synchronous motor or DC motor. However, this flexibility comes with an increase in capital and operating costs. Since the capital and operating costs of a project directly affect the project's rate of return, the selection of a SAG mill and its drive system should depend, in part, on the impact that the extra cost makes on the project. This impact can be measured by performing an economic analysis based on Net Present Cost (NPC) calculations. Although the NPC calculation is an important factor in the grinding mill selection, other factors such as reliability of mill drives and power source are important elements in the decision making process. This paper examines how the NPC calculation, plus reliability and power source, influence SAG mill selection.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) software has been successfully used to simulate various machine/soil interactions and provide insight for industries such as mining and bulk material processing. This paper will investigate typical calibration techniques used in particle models for DEM simulation and physical calibration experiments with soft ground TBM cutting tools to incorporate parameters such as tool drag forces that contribute to required TBM torque. With a well calibrated DEM model, it is expected that TBM simulation results will be more meaningful and provide better insight into TBM performance, power requirements, cutting tool placement, and overall cutter head design.

The Rawah Ditch is a mountainous water supply diversion which supplies Larimer County, Colorado with water since 1903. The ditch includes two historic tunnels excavated by drill and blast through a gneissic rock buttress. Both rock tunnels were failing with annual convergence. After a snowshoe-accessed eld investigation, nite element modeling, and an alternatives analysis, a diameter DE pipe was inserted within each tunnel and the annulus lled. The proect was implemented in an Alternative Delivery contract lasting ve months from eld investigation through procurement and construction.

The use of paste backfill in room-and-pillar coal mines in the United States needs to be fully investigated. This paper discusses a series of physical tests that were conducted to examine the support benefits of theoretical paste backfill regimens in Illinois Basin room-and-pillar coal mines, which necessarily included consideration of weak floor conditions. The series of tests included those simulating strong floor conditions, weak floor conditions, under-confined scenarios, and testing of actual coal-based paste backfill samples. The testing indicated that a paste backfill regimen utilizing a minimum backfill strength of 22 psi at a minimum fill height of 50% of pillar height could significantly increase the longterm stability of coal pillars in the Illinois Basin. Considering typical coal wash plant recoveries, 50% fill would be feasible.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production in potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other industrial minerals production from New Mexico includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. "In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. Alternatively, the organic efficiency parameter does consider process economics; however, it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach is introduced which reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure which reflects a better use of performance data. INTRODUCTION Partition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation, and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, and density separators. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of a physical property on which the separation is based (e.g. particle density, size, magnetic susceptibility, etc.). Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic “S” shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout (or bypass) values, the midpoint slope, and the separation cut point (property value with 50% recovery). Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of the calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, since a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point (i.e. an infinitely large slope). One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable (Ep), is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25% and 75% recovery points:"
