The extraction of thorium from industrial radioactive wastewaters discharged from Rare Earth (RE) plants was studied by the liquid membrane emulsion technique using P507- Span80-sulphonating kerosene-HCl. The emulsion conditions, the technological factors such as ratios of oil to the internal aqueous phase and water to emulsion, and the extraction time etc. were investigated.

Silver paste including nano sized particles maintains conductivity in high temperatures without forming oxide layers. In the industry, printing process produces wasted silver paste inside the cylinder and on silk-screen. Pyrometallugical silver recycling methods have environmental problems and do not extract pure silver after removing polymer and organic materials during the extraction process. In this study a simple wet process, of recycling the waste silver paste, using ammonia, was conducted. Silver ion extraction yield was increased using oxidant in the ammonia solution. Possible extraction yields, such as pH, concentration, temperature of ammonia, oxidant concentration and the extraction time. The particles that were obtained after the extraction process will be used as porous hydrophobic catalytic and applied to AI mask and hydrophobic ink. Gentlemen, my subject today is glass reinforced plastics. By definition, this encompasses a wide variety of materials: at least a half dozen basic varieties of polyester, epoxy, and phenolic; virtually infinite compounding variations within the basic groups: literally limitless variations in the amount and the nature of the glass reinforcing. Complicating all of this is the fact that different modes of application of the same material fall appreciably alter' the product's general strength and suitability. These many, many differing materials are what we conveniently call "glass reinforced plastics" or, more simply, fiberglass". This common name is actually a large part of the problem when dealing with fiberglass materials. Far too often a specification is written calling for simply "fiberglass reinforced polyester', based on successful prior use of a polyester laminate. Such a specification is very nearly worthless since such tremendous variation is possible under it. Success of a laminate furnished under such a specification is entirely dependent on good fortune

This study compares three different techniques — decision tree, artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) — for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunneling projects. The models’ performance was also compared with site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. The results indicate that the decision tree is best suited to predicting vibrations. Furthermore, the decision tree suggests that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by the total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole.

Several years ago I wrote a comprehensive paper 'entitled, "Future Trend of Bulk Carriers" dealing with the principle dimensions of vessels and how they can be predicted; then with loading and unloading of large carriers, especially considering various designs of "Self Unloaders". Since writing the paper, many large bulk carriers were basically built along the, predictions made. Maximum size today is in the 150,000 DWT class, with few exceptions, which are combination carriers (ore-oil) or OBO's (oil-bulk-ore) in the 200-250,000 DWT class in the same paper, many references were made cautioning engineers not to design ports which could be "obsolete tomorrow", however, these were not always followed. Nevertheless, during the past few years many modern ports were built signaling the beginning of a new area of "Super Ports". Super Ports can be built for various reasons, most important to provide transfer stations where bulk material is received from large carriers then transferred to smaller vessels or barges for distribution. Obviously, opposite movement of bulk commodities can justify the building of "Super Ports", however, these are not as difficult to build for many reasons. The Material Handling Industry has developed efficient means of unloading smaller vessels or barges with continuous-type unloaders and has mastered the art of storing, reclaiming, and moving large quantities of bulk material to high-capacity shiploaders. Nevertheless, the industry has failed to design and market efficient ship unloaders which in any way could match the presently attainable shiploading rates. For these reasons, it is considerably more difficult to build "Super Ports" for incoming rather than outgoing bulk materials with large bulk carriers. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on problems affecting high-capacity, continuous ship unloaders, especially involving large bulk carriers. For better understanding, some references will be made to the smaller, continuous barge or ship unloaders, but only as the principles affect the larger units. Simulation and modeling is powerful tool to analyze real time data and can be used to analyze different scenarios using appropriate software that may reduce need of infield data collection process and can predict reasonably accurate results. In this paper the real time data of a mine is used to simulate and model the stresses on the pillars and evaluate the pillar strength and safety factor. The material properties assigned to the model are obtained by testing the representative samples taken from the selected locations of the mine. The mine under investigation has 50 ft wide pillars and 50 ft wide rooms under an average overburden of 650 feet. The effect of reduced pillar dimensions and increased roof span on overall stability of mine and extraction ratio is analyzed using LaModel [1] software. The predicted results of the reducing pillar size are analyzed to compares the current mining practices with the optimized room and pillar size to get better extraction ratio without comprising the safety.

Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost over $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high cost makes extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. This paper reports operations research techniques used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate over 30% of the total U.S. longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation models of transfers under varying conditions were generated; and, the economics of general transfers and time-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure were investigated.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

The structure of a mine ventilation network (M.V.N.) can be represented graphically using either the mine plan (map) itself or a number of other types of diagrams. In the U.S., the two most common approaches are the line and the schematic diagrams (see Figures 1 and 2). The purpose of this paper is to introduce another type of diagram, called the canonical diagram (6). The method of M.V.N. representation which uses canonical diagrams is used extensively in Europe, and especially in Poland, where it was developed. The canonical diagram is a noncalibrated topological image of a ventilation system. It gives a simple representation of the ventilation network, allows for the classification of currents within it and enables rapid computer analysis and computation, as well as the representation of the results. It is especially useful in studying and controlling the air flow, and it may be a life saving tool in conducting rescue operations during and after mine fires.

Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

The replacement of the dry mining method at Guajú Mine by the dredging method was a means of ensuring its feasibility by maintaining the production levels. Dry mining increased the cost of the deposit with the distance and presented a limited mined volume, while the decreasing grade of the deposit led to a production drop. With the new methodology, there was a considerable reduction in unit cost of the mine and an increase in the production level of a deposit with low heavy minerals content.

Sands are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. In Michigan, annual sand disposal amounts to about one million tons. A process has been developed in this study to reclaim sands from a steel foundry. Physical separations are utilized in conjunction with other operations (such as the removal of binder, metal, spruce, washes, etc.) to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches have been examined. Experimental results are presented. The applicabilities of these separation methods are discussed.

KMG Minerals, Inc., a mica-feldspar-quartz producer in Kings Mountain, N.C., uses about 50% of its plant's -200 mesh slimes to manufacture brick. However, the company is unable to market the remaining 50% of this fine mineral mixture. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory operated a pilot plant to process these slimes to produce an additional product. The process, consisting of blunging and hydraulic sizing, was designed to separate a kaolin-enriched -270 mesh product from the bulk of the coarser +270 mesh "grit" minerals. Size analysis showed that this product was 80% finer than 20 microns and 50% finer than 6 microns (in equivalent spherical diameter). An evaluation indicated that it is a hydrous aluminum silicate that might be suitable in the filler and extender markets for traffic paint, some types of plastics, joint cements, and dusting compounds. Because of its high viscosity, it will be difficult to use more than a small percentage in cast ceramic bodies. However, it might be possible to use up to 10% in extruded ceramic bodies (i.e., electrical porcelain). The 15.2 cm (6 in,) diameter Linatex Hydrosizer was tested using a range of teeter water flowrates, so that the net rise velocity was varied from 0.10 cm/s to 0.40 cm/s. The solid feed rate to the sizer was maintained at approximately 1.1 t/hr/m2 (0.12 ton/hr/ft2). Tests were run using both "shallow" (i.e., 6 in.) and "deep" (i.e., 15 in. teetered beds. The best overall result was obtained when the sizer was operated with the "deep" teeter bed and a net rise velocity of 0.10 cm/s. About 97% of the +270 mesh material was rejected and approximately 79% of the -270 mesh material was recovered in a 14% solids slurry.

If you are contemplating starting a small coal mining operation there is a good possi¬bility that you can not afford it. If you, have already started, you may be on the road to bankruptcy. If you are a small but well established operator you may be trading dollars, or even dissipating your capital, equipment and other assets. A bleak outlook? Yes! Meant to be discouraging? No! Just a reminder that, with todays costs of doing business, high interest rates, rapidly increasing costs and decreasing sales prices, a small businessman/miner had best watch closely or he will be mired in something worse than a soft bottom - namely a cash and credit shortage, and in too many instances In recent times, bankruptcy. We will not dwell on what happens once you are that far gone, though I could cite a good example. But, let us look at what should be done to avoid such a catastrophe.

Common methods of controlling gob gas in U.S. nines are by means of ventilation of gob areas and gas drainage through surf ace boreholes. Costs of drilling surface gob holes increase as deeper coalbeds are mined. Where gob holes cannot be drilled because of topography, ventilation is the only means of control. Even then, sufficient air may not be available to dilute methane in the bleeder entries to acceptable levels. Thus, new methods of gob gas control need to be developed that are independent of surface topography, and of the mine ventilation system, and less costly than present systems. Except for slight variations in procedures and equipment, Great Britain, West Germany, France, Belguim, Poland, and Czechoslovakia use a common methane control method that is different from the system generally used in the United States, This Bureau of Mines paper reviews European mining methods, mining conditions, and methane control technology and discusses their applicability to U.S. mines.

Controlled recirculation has been used in the metal/nonmetal mining industry for energy savings when heating and cooling air, in undersea mining and for increasing airflow to mining areas. For safe and effective use of controlled district recirculation, adequate airflow to dilute contaminants must exist prior to implementation, ventilation circuit parameters must be accurately quantified, ventilation network modeling must be up to date, emergency planning scenarios must be performed and effective monitoring and control systems must be installed and used. Safety and health issues that must be considered and may be improved through the use of controlled district recirculation include blasting fumes, dust, diesel emissions, radon and contaminants from mine fires. Controlled recirculation methods are expected to become more widely used as mines reach greater working depths, requiring that these health and safety issues be well understood. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted two controlled recirculation tests over three days at a Wyoming trona mine, utilizing an inline booster fan to improve airflow to a remote and difficult-to-ventilate development section. Test results were used to determine the effect that recirculation had on air qualities and quantities measured in that section and in other adjacent areas. Pre-test conditions, including ventilation quantities and pressures, were modeled using VnetPC. During each test, ventilation quantities and pressures were measured, as well as levels of total dust. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was used to simulate a mine contaminant to monitor recirculation wave cycles. Results showed good correlation between the model results and measured values for airflows, pressure differentials, tracer gas arrival times, mine gasses and dust levels.
