Thallium is an uncommon heavy metal that may be found in concentrations that exceed regulatory limits in mining influenced water associated with processing cadmium, copper, gold, lead, and zinc ores. This study evaluated cost-effective modifications to lime precipitation treatment to reduce thallium concentrations to below the EPA drinking water MCL of 2 ppb. The oxidative precipitation of Tl+ to Tlß+ by potassium permanganate was explored for thallium removal at low concentrations (1 ppm initial thallium). Laboratory batch tests were performed to evaluate the removal of thallium from synthetic solutions. Three ratios of potassium permanganate to oxidizable metals in solution were used (one-half, one and two times stoichiometry). Thallium was removed to less than 1 ppb for all stoichiometric ratios evaluated within 10 minutes of reaction. The efficacy of oxidative precipitation for thallium removal is presented.

Most discussions of sustainable development (SD) in mining relate to metal mines in rural areas. Industrial minerals (IM) are closer to urban areas primarily owing to a high transport-cost component of delivered cost. This visibility to large populations overshadows IMs relatively small operation size and generally lower waste volume and toxicity. The IM industry needs to rethink its way of doing business to fit into the SD paradigm. Society and business in general will also undergo significant change to enable industrial SD along the lines of triple-bottom-line accounting with government pushing everyone. The benefit to IM mining from embracing SD is a renewal in their social license to operate and a rebirth of mining as a positively-viewed force in society. This positive view would lead to lower acquisition costs because society would not fight so hard to eliminate nearby mining. This would ease the current exploration woes of the IM industry by opening up new deposits for exploration and more readily allowing placement of mines nearer to markets. The earlier in the exploration process SD is initiated, the better.

Recent NIOSH published information has shown an increase of rapidly progressive coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP) in the southern Appalachian coal region (SAR) of the U.S., despite the fact that compliance data indicates that most coal miners have been exposed to coal mine dust concentrations below the statutory limit of 2.0 mg/m³. While the exact cause of these elevated CWP levels in the SAR has not been established, several factors may be contributing to the increase in occupational lung disease among coal miners. The mining of high rank coal is known to lead to higher CWP rates, and this type of coal is mined in a portion of this region. Also, a high percentage of the mines in the region are on reduced dust standards because of the high silica content of the airborne dust resulting in miners possibly being exposed to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust. Exposure to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. NIOSH's Respiratory Hazards Control Branch has been investigating the possible causes that would account for the observed higher trends in disease progression through literature review, data analysis, and in-mine surveying. The investigation to date has revealed that underground mines are faced with cutting large amounts of rock in order to maintain haulage clearances. Cutting rock not only increases the potential for silica exposure, it increases the requirement for machine maintenance which was a concern observed during dust surveys conducted by NIOSH. Over half of the mines operating in the SAR are on reduced standards due to high silica content. Adequate face ventilation of the continuous miner and roof bolter and limited down-wind operations from the miner are also issues of concern and items which require the constant attention of miners operating in these conditions. INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northwestern edge of the Nile River delta. The city is approximately 26 km long and 3 km wide bounded by the sea to the north and Lake Maryut to the south. The Alexandria Project is split into 2 phases: phase one included designs to update two existing primary wastewater treatment plants, five pump stations and over 75 km of sewer pipe, 18 km o f which is tunneled, (1500mm to 2750mm ID pipe). Currently the pipeline and pump stations are under construction. Phase two of the project includes expanding both the capacity of the treatment plants and the limits of the collection system. Included in this system expansion is the 3.5 km long, 2250mm ID Central Zone Conveyance, which is the subject of this paper. The project is under the direction of The Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). It is an USAID funded joint venture of two American firms, CH2M - Hill and Metcalf & Eddy who share equally the major portion of the work and two Egyptian firms, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) and Wairth Associates who are also partners. The venture, which is both design and construction management, worked under the name Wastewater Consultants Group, WWCG. Michael Gilbert was Chief o f the Geotechnical Department and Project Engineer for the Central Zone Conveyance. Using an exhaustive data set of Walker Lake, four different kriging techniques plus the inverse distance squared weighting were compared with regards to each one's performance in accurately estimating the block grades. The North-West quadrant of the Walker Lake data area was used because of its extreme variability of values and its distinct contour of the values. There were 1900 exhaustive data points in the selected area from which a total of 121 samples were drawn following the sampling strategy given in Isaaks and Srivastava (1989). The average of 5 x 5 exhaustive data points was treated as the true, known block grade. A total of 780 blocks, each block corresponding to the average of 5x5 exhaustive data points, were then estimated using the 121 sample points. The resulting estimates were then compared with the true known values to determine each technique's prediction performance. For this particular portion of the Walker Lake and for the given sampling strategies used, the obtained results for the global estimation are mixed. For the variable U which is much more variable, the rankings are; 1) Jackknife Kriging (JK), 2) Indicator Kriging (IK), 3) Inverse Distance Square weighting (IDS), 4) Ordinary Kriging (OK), and 5) Log-Jackknife Kriging (LJK). For the variable V, the results are; 1) OK, 2) IK, 3) JK, 4) LJK, and 5) IDS. When we apply several cutoff grades to the estimates to determine the conditional mean grades and tonnage, the above rankings generally get shifted around. Two exceptions to these cases are; a) UK for U and b) IDS for V. These two consistently ranked at the bottom.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

In order to find the behavior of dewatered unconsolidated strata during the process of injecting water through a borehole, a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for the real-time strain monitoring of unconsolidated strata during a water injection process for a dewatered unconsolidated strata of a coal mine. The unconsolidated strata water injection test was implemented through a borehole at a depth of +115.83 to +135.15m. The employed FBG strain monitoring system and ground water level observation system were installed at the depth in the unconsolidated strata where the water injection was conducted through two different boreholes. The water injection pressures in the test were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3MPa respectively, and the total water injection volume was 4226.84m3. The relationships between the water injection pressures, water injection volume and the strain change of the unconsolidated strata, the stress and strain conditions of the unconsolidated strata before and after water injection, were analyzed. This paper presents the results of these tests, and shows that the dewatering compression of the unconsolidated strata is reduced with increasing water injection pressures and water injection volumes. Comparing the stress-strain conditions before and after water injection, it is found that the stress of the water injection strata is in tension, which confirms the theory that the settlement of the thick unconsolidated strata is directly caused by the reduction of ground water levels. The high sensitivity and stability of the FBG monitoring system used was able to realize the real-time strain monitoring of the water injection process within a deep unconsolidated strata. This FBG monitoring system and the test results presented are very important for understanding further treatment of settlement in unconsolidated strata.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral. It has unique properties, which combined with its low cost, make it suitable for use in a wide variety of products. Kaolin is defined as "any of a group of clay minerals, including kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and anauxite, with a two-layer crystal in which silicon-oxygen and aluminum-hydroxyl sheets alternate; approximate composition is AlZ03-ZSiOZ-1/ ZHZO".-The kaolin discussed here is composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite. Kaolin is also commonly referred to as "china clay". Approximately 4.9 kkg (5.4 million short tons) of kaolin was sold or used in the United States, and .8 million kkg (.9 million short tons) was -exported in 1974. In domestic usage, paper coating and filling accounted for 43% of the total, fol-2/ lowed by refractories, rubber, and ceramics.-Figure 1 shows the amount of kaolin sold or used by domestic producers for specified uses for the years 1963-3/ 1973.- Kaolin was produced at mines in 14 states, but Georgia accounted for 75% of the 1974 domestic production. The average value for all grades was $36.00/kkg 4/ ($32. 67/ton) .-

"In June or July 2005, the European Commission will present its Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources proposal to the Council and European Parliament, one of the seven Thematic Strategies to be developed and implemented under the 6th European Environment Action Programme in support of the European Union’s Sustainable Development Strategy defined by the European Union’s Head of State at the Göteborg European Council, in June 2001. The time scale for this Thematic Strategy is 25 years (2005-2030). This paper discusses some of the key issues related to the EU minerals and metals industry that needs to be addressed by the Strategy. These are: - the need for access to mineral reserves in the EU and abroad; - the need to strenghten the capacity of developing countries to sustainably promote and regulate the use of their mineral potential; - the need for an EU mineral resources intelligence capacity. There are additional important needs, which are not discussed in this paper, such as: - the need to foster further innovation in mining, ore beneficiation and metallurgical technologies; - the need to integrate and simplify the exisitng complex regulatory framework applicable to the EU mining industry and to effectively implement existing legislation."

"A composite shell lining typically consists of an outer permanent sprayed concrete shell, a water proofing layer and an inner sprayed or cast concrete shell. Composite shell linings become more and more popular and have been built recently on large scale infrastructure projects. Surprisingly there is very little published literature on the actual structural design of composite linings. As a consequence there is a lack of common understanding on how to design a composite lining structure. Composite action of the outer shell (primary lining) initially carrying short term ground loads and the “unloaded” inner shell (secondary lining) require nonlinear concrete modelling to be able to assess the bearing capacity of the composite lining structure adequately. The composite action of the waterproofing membrane and the inner and outer shells can be considered either by simplified closed form solutions or by numerical models. Strength and stiffness parameters of membrane and concrete govern interaction of inner and outer shell. This paper should contribute to understanding composite lining behaviour with focus on the bearing capacity at limit state by taking into account the actual loading history. Possible ways and concepts on how to deal with these topics are presented, however a broader discussion on limit states of the composite lining materials – also in the long term will be required to come to an agreement on composite lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION Composite Lining Technology Traditionally the construction of shotcrete lined tunnels incorporates primary and secondary linings, separated by a sheet or a sprayable waterproofing membrane. The primary lining shotcrete is considered to be structurally temporary and the secondary lining to be permanent, leading to designs which ignore the bearing capacity of the primary lining in permanent condition. There was general perception that the shotcrete lining installed immediately at the tunnel face, experiencing strains up to 1% and even cracking in the early age, combined with mesh reinforcement additional support measures like lattice girder, spiles and bolts cannot be considered as a permanent structure. But also former shotcrete mixes showed significant weakness with respect to durability suggesting a more temporary nature of primary lining shotcrete. On the other hand it was clear that primary lining shotcrete does not disappear, it may lose probably a certain percentage of its bearing capacity, but discounting any contribution from the primary lining at all was considered inherently conservative. There were different strategies to account for the risk of reduced durability and bearing capacity of the primary lining, either by selecting moderate ground loads for the secondary lining design, by assuming that some residual load will be carried by the primary lining. This approach is very much based on experience. Another more rational possibility is to assume that the primary lining degrades into a rocklike material, which is weaker than the primary lining shotcrete but still imparts some strength to the ground around the secondary lining, but does not need to comply with any concrete design codes any more."

This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. In addition, depletion of some mines in Australia and South Africa has offset rising output at other properties. Indeed, when final mine output figures for 1988 become available, it may well be

A long history of weathering and bacterial alteration processes have transformed Georgia’s Coastal Plain kaolins from dark organic muds to recrystallized white pigment-grade industrial clays. A sequence of six stages in development of these valuable mineral deposits is outlined over their Late Cretaceous and Tertiary deposition and alteration history. Anaerobic and aerobic iron oxidizing and iron-reducing bacteria are present in the Georgia kaolins. These bacteria may have had a major role in iron and organic matter removal during several of the alteration stages that occurred over the past 60+ million years. Iron was likely solubilized by both iron-reducing and iron-oxidizing bacteria, depending on availability of Fe(II), Fe(III), and NO3. Thus, over long periods bacterial activity slowly led to nearly complete groundwater removal of iron from the kaolin deposits. Further bacterial iron removal on an industrial process scale may eventually prove feasible. “Without the multitude of living reactions as channels for energy and electrons and without the enormous capability of life to transfer with and against chemical gradients, there would be practically no or at least a very reduced geochemical rock cycle on this planet.” (Krumbein and Dyer, 1985, p. 157)

Discussion by E. Arioglu Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence [(ASmax)] induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/1- p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. 1 (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goat may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between [ASmax/m vs. h/1-p]. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data. It may be noted here that Wardell's approach (1969) can be successfully utilized for longwall panels having chain pillars. Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

Chemical grouting has been successfully used for over forty years to control the movement of groundwater in a wide variety of applications including tunnels, subway systems, sanitary sewers, mines and construction projects. This paper illustrates the versatility of chemical grouts by reviewing three projects where chemical grout was utilized to address some very difficult water control challenges. The featured product is acrylamide which can be used alone or in conjunction with other types of grout such as cementitious products. Acrylamide grout is injected as a two component product that will react and form an impermeable gel when the components combine. There are notable differences between the acrylamide based products and cementitious products. The most notable and significant difference is that acrylamide is a true solution grout that contains no particulates and has a viscosity of 1-2cps. This feature enables the acrylamide grout to penetrate very small geological features that other grouts could not penetrate and to seal small cracks and fissures where groundwater seepage is occurring. The product also has an adjustable gel set time from a few seconds to several hours which enables the operator to determine the product travel before it forms a gel. When properly applied the product has a half-life in the soil of 362 years (per testing by the US Department of Energy).

Employing the combination of two types of polyelectrolyte might become necessary to enhance both settling rate of the flocs and water clarity of fine particle suspension in high capacity thickening process. The sequence of addition, mixing, type and dosage of polymer affect the overall performance and capacity of a thickening process. For the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings, the cylinder test results showed that two different techniques may be used to achieve the required performance including high settling rate of flocs, underflow density and overflow water clarity, by either adjusting pH prior to anionic polyelectrolyte flocculation, or using a combination of polymer flocculant and coagulant (dual polymer system). The dynamic thickening testing results showed that only the approach using a dual polymer system is able to meet the required performance. The effects of polyelectrolyte dosage, the sequence and numbers of polyelectrolyte addition, feed concentration, bed level and rake speed on the settling rate, underflow solid, and water clarity were studied in cylinder test and a laboratory dynamic thickening unit with various conditions related to the thickening process. The dynamic test is especially valuable in evaluating the addition and mixing of polymers. The results were evaluated quantitatively, using total suspended solids in supernatant, underflow density and capacity per unit settling area per unit time as the measure of effectiveness. The objective of this study is to quantify and explain some of the parameters involved in the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings.

Where space is limited, as it is throughout most of the northeastern United States, new construction either takes place high above street level, or below it. In Lower Manhattan, NY both kinds of expansion can be found in abundance. That is good news for the nearly 200 attendees at the George A. Fox Conference, presented by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, on Jan. 30. Among the many projects taking place in Lower Manhattan?s massive trans-formation process, are expansions to the city?s vast underground network of subways and other tunnels. ?New Yorkers either live on the ground or below it,? said keynote speaker Charles J. Maikish while explaining how an attempt to build above street level walkways never caught on in the city. Maikish is the executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center. His job is to oversee the $22 billion project that will transform the island by 2010. From the construction of Freedom Tower at the site of the fallen World Trade Center buildings, to the expansion of the Second Avenue Subway, the extension of the East Side Access, No. 7 line, the new trans-Hudson line and numerous waterway tunnel expansions, including City Water Tunnel No. 3, the task Maikish is charged with is a huge one. He is primarily responsible for coordinating the scheduling and staging of the overall rebuilding plan, along with the day-to-day coordination of construction work down-town. He places particular focus on mitigating impacts on the environment and mobility, maintaining and improving access and alleviating congestion of any kind related to construction. At the time of the Fox Conference, there were 59 projects under way in Manhattan. All of those projects need things like concrete and steel delivered to sites in very tight working environments. And some need the equipment in even tighter spaces. ?This is not just about the recovery of Lower Manhat-tan (from the 2001 terrorist attacks) but this is a plan to restore it and to maintain its integrity,? said Maikish. ?I think that is the appropriate response to the terrorist attacks.? When Freedom Tower is completed, it will stand 541 m (1,776 ft) about the skyline. That will be a strong statement to the world about America?s strength. But it is the work that takes place much lower that was of interest to the conference attendees. On this respect, Maikish said Manhattan?s efforts below ground aim to provide relief to the city?s street level congestion and to make sure Manhattan ? already essential to the economy of the United States and the world ? stays current by upgrading the existing telecommunications and technological network while also allowing room for growth in that area.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed, wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in one-phase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity, non-Darcy, single- and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulae on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

The industrial processing of ores containing precious metals such as gold is generally very mining site specific, e. g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985), vanZyl et. a1. (1988), Fuerstenau and Hendrix (1990), and Hausen et. a1. (1990). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size reduction, size classification, gravity separation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical and/or bacterial leaching, ion exchange and/or solvent extraction, and froth flotation. Gold occurs in the earth's crust on the average in very low concentration estimated by various sources to be between two and five parts per billion. For a specific ore deposit to be considered as an economic source of gold, generally a concentration of near one part-per million (one gram / Mton) or more is required. From a mineralogical viewpoint, gold often occurs in its native or free form. However, it can also occur as gold compounds of telluride, antimony, and selenium contained within either sulfide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite. and pyrrhotite or, to a less extent, within silicate, oxide, and carbonate minerals. In many locations, alloying of gold with silver is found. The optimal processing method for recovering gold is determined by many factors such as the mineralogy of the gold bearing minerals as well as the associated mineralogy of the gangue minerals, the type of liberation profile of the gold bearing minerals upon' size reduction, and the particle size of the gold itself. Free or native gold particles can vary in size from the extreme of large nuggets to very finely disseminated gold associated in a complex sulfide mineral matrix. Typically free gold particles of several hundred microns or larger are efficiently recovered by one or more of a number of gravity based techniques due to the large specific gravity differential of gold (19.3 to 15) versus typical gangue minerals (5 to 2.7). When gold is associated with a sulfide (usually pyrite) matrix, historically most industrial plants involving size reduction and subsequent liberation have operated in a size range of 50 to 80 percent less than 75 microns. Grinding finer than this has been normally not economical unless the ore has a high gold content in the feed ore.
