The in situ mining of uranium is the process whereby chemical lixiviant is injected by means of wells into, and flowed through, an ore body. The lixiviant reacts with uranium which has been previously oxidized making the uranium soluble. The solution is then brought to the surface by means of producing wells. In situ mining disturbs the ground-water quality in the immediate area. Since ground water is a natural resource used by man, care must be taken not to allow the lixiviant to escape the local mining area. Also, when the ore body is mined out, the area should be restored to as near its original state as is reasonably achievable. The return of ground-water quality to its original state can occur naturally over a long period of time or be enhanced using appropriate technological means.

Due to improvements in the safety of other aspects of mining (primarily in roof control), haulage related accidents, particularly rail haulage accidents, are about to become the most common category of hazards causing death and injuries to underground coal miners. The major causes of these accidents are collisions between vehicles, men caught between rib and trip or between cars, derailments, and runaway cars. Such hazards can be greatly reduced if the motorman has the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the cab of the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled cars, to determine if the trip is intact, and if brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. These capabilities can be provided through an improved coupler system, designed and built by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines contract. Early in the program, a survey of rail haulage patents and literature was conducted. Manufacturers of couplers, mine cars and braking systems were contacted and information relevant to the remote control mine haulage application was collected. From this information evolved a working specification and a design concept. The key elements of the specification, shown in Table I, are the result of a detailed tradeoff study and considerable thought given to the specific problems encountered in the mining environment. A brief explanation of each element is as follows: Automatic Coupling - The couplers operate similarly with most already in underground use - they latch together when a trip is backed into a car intended for coupling. Remote Uncoupling - From the locomotive, the motorman can decide how many cars are to be uncoupled, operate the appropriate controls, and the desired coupler is opened.

INTRODUCTION In order to understand the transport and deposition of radon daughters in mine atmospheres, it is necessary to know the variation in the attachment of the daughter atoms to particles as a function of particle size, composition, number density, relative humidity, temperature, and radon concentration, the free gaseous diffusion coefficients of the daughters, and the variation in the mass transfer of the activity, both free and attached to particles, to mine surfaces as a function of particle size distribution, surface roughness of the mine walls, and the flow conditions. If all of these parameters are known in a model system, it should be possible to understand the transport and fate of the airborne radioactivity in real mines under certain well-defined flow conditions. There have been a number of recent investigations of the attachment of radon decay products to particles 1-4, but there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the process. However, it is clear that for most real mine atmospheres, the vast majority of the activity is attached to particles. The size distributions for the activity-bearing airborne particles have been studied 5,6, and it has been found that most of the activity resides on particles with diameters in the range of 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm with an average mass median diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 µm. The behavior of the unattached radon daughter species has also been recently studied[ 7], and many of the previous problems regarding the value of the diffusion coefficient for Po-218 have been resolved. A major problem in the understanding of the airborne transport of radioactivity in mines is the lack of detailed knowledge of mass tranfer to and fluid flow over rough walls under fully developed turbulent flow conditions. This paper will report the progress on a project that is designed to obtained that information. MATHEMATICAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT Deposition of particles on smooth surfaces in turbulent flow has been extensively studied. A comprehensive review of these results has been prepared by Sehmel 8. There has not been such a comprehensive study of particle deposition on rough walls under such flow conditions. In recent years, only a single model has been proposed to explain such deposition 9,10 and in both of these papers the flow structure in the rough walled pipe was not taken fully into account. As part of the work being conducted on this project, a more complete model was outlined in a previous report [11]. The basic theory will be reviewed to provide a context for the flow measurements to be reported. The flux of particle deposited on the walls of a pipe in a turbulent flow is derived from the one dimensional form of Fick's law as given by [N = Dpdpp/dr (1) where N is the flux of particles deposited per unit area per unit time, D is the total eddy diffusivity of the particles, p is the airborne concentration of particles, and pr is the distance measured from the center of the pipe. The rate of deposition is best expressed by a deposition velocity Vp = NIP pb (2) where P b is the mean particle concentration in the sulk flow. The shear radius, V/ut and the shear velocity, u , are used to calculate a nondimensional distance, and velocity, respectively, where v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The nondimensional form of equation 1 is given by Vd = DP dpp(3) V dr+ where Pp = Pp/ Ppb(4) By integrating equation 3 from the rough wall stopping distance, S , to the center of the pipe, the deposition velocity can be obtained. In order to make this calculation, it is necessary to have accurate descriptions for the particle eddy diffusivity, stopping distance, and shear velocity in order to insure that the influence of the flow structure has been properly accounted for. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of chlorinated chemicals that were used in many different fire resistant hydraulic fluids, heat transfer fluids, and in electrical equipment as dielectric liquids. PCBs were manufactured primarily by Monsanto Chemical Company under the tradename Aroclor, and were used by many different electrical equipment manufacturers. PCBs are noted chiefly for their extreme chemical inertness. This resulted in exceptional fire resistance and long life in applications involving exposure to high temperatures and intense electrical fields. This combination of properties resulted in PCBs being widely used in electrical equipment used in mines, including transformers, capacitors, and some electric motors. PCBs were also used as working fluids in some heat transfer and hydraulic sys terns. The same chemical resistance that gave PCBs long life in industrial applications give PCBs essantially eternal life when they are released into the environment. PCBs are not highly toxic in the sense that exposure does not cause immediate health problems. However, PCBs accumulate in the human body and neither degrade nor are eliminated from the body, and long-term exposure to PCBs can result in changes in liver function which may increase susceptibility to the carcinogenic effects of other chemicals. PCBs also accumulate in the food chain; the concentration of PCBs in fresh water fish may be several hundred thousand times as high as in the water the fish are taken from.

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

The Hutti Greenstone belt, located in the northern side of Dharwar Craton, India, contains several promising gold fields. It is predominantly composed of meta-volcanics with minor intercalations of meta-sedimentaries. Alkali-SiO2 and Zr-P2O5 diagrams, immobile element trends, and an iron-rich trend on the AFM diagram indicate that the volcanic suite is low-potassium tholeiitic basalt. The lower Mg number, MgO-TiO2, MgO-Ni, and Ni-Zr plots reveal that the basalt was derived from a fractionated, highly evolved magma generated by 10-20% melting of the mantle at 1100°C and 5 kb pressure. The chemical variations suggest that the Hutti metabasalt represents volcanic arc rocks generated at a converging plate margin.

Speed and torque control of standard A.C. induction motors can be accomplished using a variety of devices ranging from mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical. Also, the motor can be specified as an A.C. wound rotor or D.C. motor using the associated controls. Normally, any one of these drive types can be adequately used to provide the torque control necessary to accelerate a conveyor belt system. The selection will depend on the economics, experience, and preference of the designer or end user. These drive types will be presented from a functional and performance viewpoint to assist in the understanding of the available technology.

A technique is presented for simple characterization of the performance of flocculents in various mining applications. The method utilizes three key parameters obtained from raw settling data and combines them into a single athematical parameter called the desirability coefficient. The first two parameters are the timesrequired for the slurry-supernatant interface -to fall to two selected fractions of the starting height, and the third is the clarity of the supernatant liquid. The relative values of the three parameters may be assigned different weights in order to make them correspond with laboratory and field performance requirements of a particular industry. Provision is also made of an, internal comparison of test flocculant data with that of a control.

"While genetic algorithms have been widely adopted in ore grade estimation and optimization, mine design, and production scheduling in the mining engineering field, reliability and maintainability analysis of mining equipment using genetic algorithms has been a relatively new research area in recent years. This paper presents an application of genetic algorithms using case studies with seven underground scoop trams whose maintenance records have been collected over a period of 12 months from an underground mine in the Sudbury mining area. Based on the assumption that various factors that contribute to machine failures resemble the biological evolution process, the authors have developed an in-house PC software application called GenRel which adopts genetic algorithms in its programming. In this study, the authors feed the historical maintenance data into GenRel in order to predict future maintenance characteristics of mining equipment in a time period of three months. Then the predicted maintenance characteristics are compared to the actual maintenance records in the same time period. A statistical study is then used to examine the similarity between the predicted data and the recorded data.INTRODUCTION Today maintenance costs of sophisticated engineering systems are so high that maintainability draws great attention from scientific researchers to operations managers. For instance, a study by [1] shows that American manufacturers spend more than 300 billion U.S. dollars on plant maintenance and operations. Therefore it is understandable that the main objectives of applying maintainability principles to engineering systems are to reduce projected maintenance costs, to use maintainability data to estimate system or equipment availability/unavailability and to determine labor-hours and other related resources needed to perform the projected maintenance. A system with better maintainability would inherently provide the benefit of lower maintenance costs, less time to recover with lower breakdown frequency (design for simplicity), less complexity of maintenance tasks and relatively reduced man-hours [2]. Most maintainability functions use the Time To Repair (TTR) as the independent variable. It is common to use probabilistic or statistical concepts to define a maintainability function, for example, the probability density function. Let t denote the time. Assuming a repair starts at t=0 and completes at time T, the maintainability can be mathematically defined [3] as in Equation (1)."

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. The variables involved in a complex process like flotation can be classified as follows: a. Disturbance variables - which are undesired properties of the process input which affect the value of the process output but which are not subject to adjustment. They are the result of changes in the properties of the feed, like changes in head grade, flow rate, fineness of grind, etc. b. Manipulated variables (sometimes referred to as process variables or control variables) -which are those that are adjusted - reagent addition, aeration, pulp level - in order to compensate for the disturbances in the properties of feed. c. Performance variables (sometimes referred to as controlled variables) -which are those whose values measure the performance of the process. They are properties of the process output such as grade and recovery. The function of a control system is to maintain the process performance equal to the control objective in spite of the disturbances by adjusting the manipulated variables. Attempts at developing automatic control systems for mineral processing operations date back to the thirties and in many of these attempts the results were not surprisingly poor and un-stable. The poor results brought indifference and suspicion towards automatic control on the part of operators and management. The reasons for the apparent failure of these attempts were two-fold: a. the lack of adequate understanding of the behavioural responses of the process from the control point of view, and b. the lack of reliable control instrumentation which could withstand the harsh environment in mineral dressing plants. Many operators had accepted the fact that control of mineral dressing could be best conducted manually. In the case of flotation circuits, control had been virtually based on the skill and experience of operators particularly their ability to identify and rectify poor flotation performance aided by results from the laboratory (chemical) analysis of regularly collected samples from strategic points in the circuit which are at best, hourly collected samples.

This is an extension of the work on recovery of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores, and recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust from phosphate industry. Carbon adsorption was considered as the most adequate method for recovery of silver from thiourea leach solutions. For this reason it was decided to examine the characteristics of adsorption of silver on activated carbon. Coconut hard shell activated carbon was used for this study. Ag(TU)2C1 complex was dissolved into thiourea solution to give 2 gpl stock solution. Thy studied parameters were: loading isotherms at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C, initial kinetics as a function of thiourea concentration, temperature, pH, N2, and O2. It was found that the loading capacity of carbon for silver and thiourea was 137-150 mg/g and 514 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C.

A portable electronic instrument was developed which will measure change of longitudinal wave velocity with change of uniaxial stress in rock columns. The instrument is a solid-state device powered by nickel-cadmium batteries. It uses a probe of two piezo-electric crystals spaced inches apart to send and receive a pulse through a stressed rock. A one-inch cathode ray oscilloscope visually displays the longitudinal wave. A reference chart is used to find the stress. Laboratory results have indicated that the average stress on a sandstone column can be found to within 35 psi. The feasibility of using this instrument to determine stresses in mine pillars is to be studied. The instrument may be used to investigate physical properties of rock.

The reliable performance of the coal reclaim system is essential to the continued availability of a coal-fired electric generating unit. The control of fugitive coal dust within the areas housing the reclaiming equipment is necessary not only to minimize maintenance and clean-up costs, but is also a safety and health consideration. This paper describes the reclaim system control and dust suppression systems as initially installed, the shortcomings of these systems and the steps eventually taken to correct these shortcomings.

"The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

The Spitzenberg Tunnel is a 600 m (1,970 ft) long twin tube motorway tunnel on Germany’s Autobahn A44 between Kassel and Eisenach. Since flexibility was considered to be very important in the continuously changing geological conditions, NATM was chosen as the construction method. When passing an old quarry with only 1,80 m (6 ft) of overburden, the excavation works became extraordinarily challenging. This paper not only describes the special methods, like double sidewall drifts and pipe umbrellas applied in this zone but also highlights the cooperation between the parties involved, which in combination made the project a joint success.

A linear integer programming (MIP) model to solve the long-and short-term production-scheduling problem for sublevel caving operations is presented. The MIP model is designed as a multi-time-period problem to provide monthly schedules that meet production, blending and sequencing requirements. One of the most important issues during the development of the MIP model was the requirement of sequencing between blocks. In this mathematical model, unique constraints that ensure sequencing of the production from sublevels are developed. A suggested method of handling a large number of variables is also given. The MIP scheduling model was implemented on a data set obtained from the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine located in northern Sweden. The initial MIP model implementation was successful and provided a solution that optimized resource recovery while meeting monthly and yearly production constraints. The scheduling results obtained based on the Kiruna Mine are further presented and discussed.

The E-Power Pipe technology was originally developed for the trenchless installation of protective pipes and pipelines of 10" to 28" diameter, over long distances of more than 4,000 ft. The twostage process combines elements from Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and microtunnelling technology. A microtunnelling boring machine (MTBM) excavates the borehole using a specially designed, temporary jacking pipe. A Rack & Pinion jacking frame pushes the equipment during the pilot bore and pulls in the prefabricated pipe string in a second step. The slurry microtunnelling machine is equipped with a jet pump, creating the so-called AVNS machine type. A new generation of small hard rock cutting wheels complements this considerable achievement for the tunnelling industry

From a macro business process perspective, if what we do in the Mining Industry is find material, dig it out of the ground, convert it to a product and sell it, we are in what might be considered a "simple business". If it is so simple, where does information technology fit? How does it affect our industry? Is it a strategic tool for our industry? What approach should we be employing to ensure we are utilizing information technology effectively? How is information technology integrated or tied together with other areas in the organization such as process control? What kind of people and skill sets are required to support the whole area of information technology? What effect does information technology and automation have on streamlining and rethinking the way we do business in the 90's. This paper covers how these areas have been addressed within the Noranda Group of Companies. It reviews how information technology has evolved, the approach, and what effect it has had on a diversified natural resources company in the mining and metals, forest products, and oil and gas industries.
