Mineralogical analyses of carbonates in depyritized tailings and pyrite concentrate (from depyritization of the tailings) were completed as part of the tailings characterization for the Crandon Project, a massive sulfide deposit in northeastern Wisconsin. The mineralogical study was designed to determine the proportion of calcium and magnesium carbonates, and therefore the effective buffering capacity of carbonates in the tailings. The depyritized tailings are net acid consuming and will be stored in a surface tailings management area. The pyrite concentrate is net acid generating and will be used as backfill in the underground mine workings. The majority of carbonates in the depyritized tailings were ferroan dolomite containing 10 to 15% iron (by weight) and lesser amounts of siderite and magnesian siderite. The proportion of calcium and magnesium-rich carbonates corresponds to several independent tests of carbonate neutralization potential (CO3-NP) availability. The pyrite concentrate had less CO3-NP, indicating segregation of the carbonates during pyrite flotation. These carbonates reported higher iron contents, consistent with the relatively lower availability of CO3-NP in the pyrite concentrate.

Demand for construction raw materials depends on investment in housing, other buildings and infrastructure. The provision of these materials requires early knowledge of future trends in construction investment. By using scenarios possible future developments and bandwidths can be explored. Policy makers in government organisations as well as in the private sector can base their policy decisions upon these insights. In this paper we discuss the case of sand and gravel in the Netherlands. We will show that, depending on the future role of government and the degree of internationalisation, the long term demand for construction raw materials will strongly diverge. Nevertheless there are some common developments such as a decreasing population growth, a smaller share of the labour force in total population and a growing wealth. In different scenarios we will encounter different conditions for minerals provision and for sustainable development.

There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frothers and frother mixtures. An adsorption model is presented, which has been used to quantify the role of frother type and concentration during frother bubble interaction, based on the correlation of model parameters to physical frother characteristics. This approach was found to provide useful insight with respect to blending and selection of flotation frothers to meet specified flotation performance criteria.

Injuries due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are not uncommon in heavy industry like mining. Researchers acknowledged that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors is the chief causative factor in the development ofWMSDs. The aim of this study was to perform an ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among surface mine workers in India. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to collect subjective response from 500 workers. A stratified random sampling method according to surface mining work activity type was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. A response rate of 85% was obtained out of 500 targeted groups. TheWMSDs prevalence for the 12-month period was estimated to be 44.23%. The mean and standard deviation of workers’ age were 41.31and 8.927, respectively. The study has shown that the operators of dumpers, dozers, and graders along with electricians were found to be the most susceptible to developWMSD problems. Among the most affected body parts, back disorder reported the highest. Further, it was found that working with static posture over the longer duration has a significant association with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.020) and bouncing and jarring has also significantly associated with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.023). Similarly, a significant association was found between repetitive work and neck pain (with p = 0.016). The study depicted a significant association between ergonomic hazards and WMSDs, like working with prolonged static posture, bouncing and jarring, and repetitive work.

It is known from soluble salt flotation practice that the K, Mg double salts of kainite (KClMgSO43H2O), and carnallite (KClMgCl26H2O) are difficult to float and must be converted to other salts such as schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O) and sylvite (KCl) in order to recover potash values. The flotation characteristics of these double salts have now been confirmed in some detail by carefully controlled laboratory experiments with both cationic and anionic collectors. The experimental results are discussed in view of recent experimental findings regarding the flotation characteristics of simple salts, in which the flotation response was shown to be determined by the interfacial water structure and whether the salt could be considered to be a water structure maker or a water structure breaker. The same approach can be use to explain the flotation response of the potassium double salts ; schoenite, kainite, and carnallite. In addition, the sign of the surface charge of schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O), was determined as a function of pH from nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements. Schoenite appears to exhibit three charge reversals (CR) which can be explained based on surface hydrolysis reactions. The flotation behavior of schoenite is further considered based on solution chemistry calculations, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and microflotation results.

The size of bubbles plays an important role in flotation. Equations used to calculate the size of bubbles all show the effect of liquid/gas surface tension. However, the surface tension does not change much with frother concentration and experiments conducted using single capillaries (or single-hole spargers) do not reveal any clear effect of the frother concentration on bubble size. The size of bubbles does, however, strongly depend on frother concentration when multi-hole spargers are utilized (or when measured in a flotation cell); at low frother concentrations the bubble size is much larger indicating coalescence as a main mechanism determining the size. Coalescence can be prevented at frother concentrations exceeding the critical coalescence concentration (CCC), which in turn was found to be interrelated with the dynamic foamibility index (DFI).

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.

The roasting process of copper concentrates containing variable quantities of arsenic in a fluidized bed regime was analyzed, considering the technical literature published on the topic in the last quarter century. Although emphasis has been given to the analysis in the fluidized bed regime, other processes have also been considered, under a reducing, neutral or oxidizing atmosphere. The kinetic mechanisms of roasting, as well as the models that have been applied or those likely to be used to explain the kinetics of arsenic removal, are analyzed. Regarding the kinetic mechanisms, those that have been applied to copper concentrates with both high and low arsenic content are included. The roasting kinetic model includes the kinetic data analysis techniques, general models, equations and an estimation of the conversion degree through dynamic, differential and integral methods, as well as particular models for mineralogical components, such as smelter dust and copper concentrates with low and high arsenic content.

The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

The Shirley Basin Uranium mine, located in southeastern Wyoming, USA, was an open pit mining operation consisting of a series of several open pit mines excavated into poorly consolidated sandstones, siltstones, and claystones. Since the initial open pits were developed in 1969, slope failures have plagued the mine and mining operations. These slope failures have persisted into the current mine reclamation period. When the mine was first developed, the open pit slopes were designed to range between 45 to 55 degrees. Numerous slope failures during mine development required the pit slopes to be redesigned with slopes as shallow as 26 degrees. At present, movements are occurring within the open pits on reclaimed slopes that are shallow as 12 degrees. Several detailed slope studies were conducted at the mine in the early 1970s. These studies, combined with more recent geotechnical investigations, provide a unique detailed history of pit slope failures on shallow slopes. This paper presents an evaluation of the slope failures at the Shirley Basin mine, highlighting important mechanisms causing slope failures on very shallow slopes. The evaluation demonstrates important key parameters for shallow slope design.

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

Surface and underground mining operations require equipment with high power output ratings. Haul trucks, loaders, dozers, and other equipment need increasing horse-power to meet production demands. To get more horsepower out of the engines driving the equipment, most manufacturers use turbocharging. Detroit Diesel puts the number at about 90% turbocharged, while Caterpillar estimates 75% to 80% of all its equipment is turbocharged. Turbocharging increases the power output and overall engine efficiency. But it presents some maintenance and operational problems that were not factors when only naturally aspirated engines (nonturbocharged) dominated the scene. A turbocharger is an exhaust-driven air compressor. Using the waste energy in the engine exhaust, a turbine wheel is driven. This wheel is connected by a common shaft to a compressor wheel. The shaft is supported by two plain bearings, or bushings. As the turbine wheel is rotated, the compressor wheel continually compresses the intake air to the cylinders. Compressing the intake air means that more air can be put into the cylinder to burn more fuel. The more fuel the engine can completely burn or combust, the more horsepower the engine can produce. Even though the turbocharger is a relatively simple device, it is a sensitive engine component. It requires special consideration at engine start-up and shutdown. Being freewheeling and exhaust driven, turbochargers can experience temperatures of 540°C 1000°F) and rotational speeds of more than 100,000 rpm. Due to those temperatures and speeds, lubrication is critical to the operation and life of a turbocharger. The turbo is located high on the engine, with the oil supply running through an external line from the sump. The recommended practice is to start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes before any revving or loading. This allows the oil to reach the turbo and properly lubricate the bearings before high rotational speeds are seen. Turbo oil supply lines can be as long as 1.5 m (5 ft). Depending on ambient temperatures and oil viscosity, it can take as long as 30 seconds for oil to reach the spinning turbo. However, as little as five seconds without oil can damage the turbo's bearings, reducing its life and overall efficiency. Lubrication problems seen at shut-down can also significantly affect turbo life and efficiency. Manufacturers recommend an idling period of five to seven minutes before engine shutdown. This allows the turbo to slow down and cool off somewhat to help prevent oil coking and bearing damage. When the engine stops, so does the oil supply. There is very little oil left on the bearing surfaces and in the turbo oil supply passages. The immediate heat transfer from the turbine wheel to shaft, bearings, and turbo body literally cooks what is left. This high heat without oil flow can cause bearing deformation by actually melting some of the bearing material. The rapid oil oxidation and coking will restrict oil passages, damage bearings and shaft. Besides heat soaking, there is another problem. If the turbo is spinning at high speeds when the engine is shutdown, the turbo must spin-down to a stop without oil flow. With the large size of turbos used on mining equipment, this spindown time without oil can be for as long as 10 to 20 seconds. Fortunately, lack of lubrication at start-up and shutdown and the subsequent bearing damage can be prevented by oil injection devices. These devices hold a reservoir of engine oil. The oil is injected to the turbocharger bearings immediately on start-up and for several minutes after shutdown. Oil injection devices are spring loaded, hydraulic accumulators. They are actuated at start-up by a solenoid wired to the starter motor. Engine oil pressure charges the accumulator during normal operation. Upon shut-down and loss of oil pressure, the device provides oil to the turbo for about two or three minutes. With an oil injection device, the engine can be started and immediately driven without fear of turbo damage. Also, an abrupt shutdown will not damage the turbocharger since the device will continue to lubricate for two or three minutes. A word of caution. Be sure the oil injection device provides positive oil displacement (pressurized oil flow). Do not use a gravity-flow device. Unless it is a true accumulator, the device could starve the turbo for oil on start-up, Ask for start-up and shut-down pressures and delivery times before considering installation. Keep the oil clean, and follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. These intervals are usually shorter than with naturally aspirated engines. Use oil with a CD rating designed for diesel applications. A multiviscosity oil is preferable. Use a synthetic engine oil, such as Mobil's Delvac 1, Gulf's Super Duty II, or Chevron's Sub-zero Fluid. Synthetics have much better flow properties at low temperatures. They also have greater oxidation stability (they can take the high heat of turbo-bearing lubrication. And they produce fewer deposits because they are more thermally stable. But synthetic oils do cost more - two or three times more. One additional point - maintain the air intake system. Since all mining is usually in a dusty environment, air filters should be changed regularly and intake systems should be checked for leaks. All intake air passes through the turbo. Any dirt or abrasives entering the turbo will damage the unit and shorten its life. While mining is a heavy duty business with severe operating conditions, you can get the life from your turbocharger that you expect by following a few simple steps: • equip the turbo with an oil-injection device to provide lubrication on start-up and shutdown; • change the oil and filters regularly; and • use the proper oil-synthetic, if possible.

The preparation of graduate talent for the mining industry is a challenging process, given the multifaceted and complex array of decisions mining engineers make in discharging their responsibilities. As leaders, mining engineers must manage operations, lead project teams, mentor junior engineers, chart the technological directions of companies and deal with several organizations for maintaining the technical and economic feasibility of operations within strategic and tactical framework. Traditionally, the completion of the bachelor of science degree curriculum, with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA), has been used as a graduation measure by Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Companies have long realized the limitations of the CGPA for recruiting graduates because mining engineering is an applied engineering discipline. Company recruiters have sought to correct the limitations by factoring experience and behaviors into the selection process when recruiting knowledgeable and well-rounded graduates. In this paper, the authors introduce a new metric, which combines the current CGPA (knowledge) with experience and attribute (KEA) metrics to gauge the job readiness of graduating engineers. The KEA metric, also called the job-readiness factor (JRF), is the sum of K (50%), E (30%) and A (20%). The KEA process has been applied to a graduating class in Missouri S&T to demonstrate the value of the new metric system. The results show a fairly positive correlation between CGPA and the KEA metric, with a coefficient of determination of about 70%. Overall, the KEA metric system provides a better picture of the capacity and job readiness of graduates entering the workforce.

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

The Price Road Drainage Tunnel was constructed for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) in 1988 and 1989 to provide surface water drainage for the proposed outer Loop Highway (SR 117). The 5.4 km (3 mile) long, 6.6 m (22 ft) excavated diameter tunnel was driven through sand, gravel and cobbles utilizing an open face digger shield. Precast concrete segments were erected for initial ground support. A second-pass reinforced concrete final lining was placed, which was followed by contact grouting. This paper will consider the owner's representatives' view of the effectiveness of using precast concrete segments for this project. Topics discussed include segment design and erection, ground support, geotechnical instrumentation, segment erection verses contact grout interactions and tunnel production.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla's examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100' in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone. A whole new group of non-ferrous pyrometallurgical processes with the ability to utilize tonnage oxygen and capture sulphur dioxide were developed and commercialized over the period 1940s–1980s. Many of these earlier process developments were undertaken with limited knowledge of the process chemistry and influence of key process variables; in many cases, piloting helped provide much new physico-chemical data, but gaps remained. The second generation versions of these technologies of today provide all the primary copper, nickel and lead produced worldwide by pyro-metallurgical smelting. Further, process development has continued and a new generation of copper and lead smelting technologies have also been developed in China since the 1990s. The older reverberatory and blast furnaces have been progressively replaced by the newer technologies—a good example being the introduction in 1992 of the copper IsaSmelt technology at the Mt. Isa smelter in Australia where the former fluid bed roaster and reverberatory furnaces were replaced by a single new smelting unit, together with an acid plant for sulphur dioxide collection. The development of these new technologies was made possible by investment in fundamental and applied research. The lesson for the future is, in order to sustain these improvements, continued investment in research and development capability is required—to do otherwise is to risk obsolescence and lack of competiveness in the world market. Dr. Peter Hayes at The University of Queensland is one of the many researchers and process engineers who have contributed to the fundamental understanding of metallurgical processes over this period of rapid change in technologies. The present paper briefly outlines some of the many contributions Peter Hayes has made to the understanding of kinetics, mechanisms and phase equilibria in metallurgical systems, and metallurgical process development.
