Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.

INTRODUCTION Caving Mine Drift Support Design The support of production drifts remains a high-cost item facing the developer or operator of an underground caving mine. Support costs are incurred well in advance of ore production, and there is a strong need to minimize these pre-production commitments of capital. Due to the extensive rock loads that normally develop during the caving process, the support used in caving mines is typically quite heavy and therefore costly. The process of designing this support increasingly makes use of basic tunneling principles, but is hindered by the still-incomplete state of knowledge of rock behavior in caving mines, and high variability of geological conditions in caving orebodies. Caving mines differ from tunnels in that the deformations and rock loads induced are transient and dynamic in occurrence, and are normally large in magnitude, often well in excess of rock mass strength. As opposed to tunnels, caving mine layouts are more intricate, and the methods and effects of construction ordinarily are not as closely monitored. Safety factors in mining tend to be lower and rock masses tend to he weaker. These aspects prevent strict application of tunnel design technology to caving mine drift support, with the result that mine drift supports are commonly designed chiefly on the basis of experience at other mines. Mining procedures at caving mines are evolved in response to site-specific requirements, to the extent that there are really as many caving methods as there are caving mines.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have gained worldwide acceptance in the construction field and are being employed in ever increasing numbers to drive underground transit lines, drainage systems, etc. However, TBM utilization in the mining industry, and more specifically coal mining, has been very limited. This paper reviews past and present applications of TBMs to coal mining and examines the needs of the industry in an attempt to offer some insight as to what a TBM system must provide if the excavation potential demonstrated in civil works projects is to be realized in coal operations. EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE Germany The Germans recognized long ago the potential of mechanized drivage for coal mine entry development. Early in the 1960's experimental runs were made with a full-face Wohlmyer roadheader at the Westerholt Mine and trials were conducted on a roller bit armed full-face Bade roadheader. But because of problems with penetrating the various carboniferous strata occurring in changing sequence and hardness, these first attempts were soon terminated. After viewing later successes in the construction industry with improved TBMs, new attempts were initiated by the German mining industry in 1971 to mechanize drivage of their development entries. Four TBMs of two different types were placed in operation.

The Courthouse Commons Tunnel facilitates the secure transfer of inmates between the County Jail and State Courthouse across a city block in downtown San Diego, California. This shallow tunnel was excavated using the Sequential Excavation Method in soft ground. It passes under 8- and 10-story buildings with a foundation cover of 6 feet, and crosses the active San Diego Fault with a design offset displacement of 18 inches. The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

With 13.7km of TBM tunneling in Atlanta’s hard gneiss well under way, drill and shoot work continues on several sites throughout the city. In order for the City of Atlanta to meet the consent decree imposed by the federal government, an aggressive construction schedule was a necessity. Construction consists of two deep, large diameter tunnels, four construction shafts, a pumping station, one overflow shaft, three large intake structures, and two connecting tunnels. Due to the multitude of blasting insensitive urban environments, a high standard of seismic and air-overpressure criteria, coupled with time restrictions, was adopted for the project. At any given time, drill and blast operations were under way at four of the seven sites requiring a certain amount of coordination between the TBM excavation, surface work, and the forces of Mother Nature. This paper addresses the challenges faced and the techniques used to safely and successfully complete the rock excavation of the West Area CSO Tunnel and Pumping Station project.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. INTRODUCTION Behavior of clay soils in response to tunneling is reasonably well understood by reference to the tunnel stability factor NT = Pz/su (Peck, 1969; Heuer, 1974). With this analysis tool, care must be taken to use a value of clay shear strength which represents the actual mass strength, considering such factors as slickensided fissures often found in stiff and hard clays. Behavior of clean sand and gravel soils is also reasonably well understood. Above the water table these soils must be assumed to act as running ground unless they are known to have significant cementation or have a very dense and angular interlocked grain structure. Below the water table they must be tunneled using some form of groundwater control such as dewatering, grouting, freezing, or internal fluid pressure in the tunnel such as compressed air or a slurry tunneling machine. The internal fluid pressure must approximately balance the external water head. Without such precautions these soils behave as flowing ground and may yield large volumes of water flow into the tunnel. A wide range of very fine sand, silty sand, cohesionless silt, and clayey sand soils exist in nature in a variety of geologic environments. The behavior of these soils in response to tunneling, and guidelines for anticipating their behavior, are not well described in the literature. Because of their content of fine particles, these materials may behave as if they initially have appreciable cohesion and moderate to low permeability. They may exhibit significant standup time, and require tunnel internal fluid pressure (compressed air or slurry pressure) less than the full external water head. It is important to be able to estimate the behavior of these soils when planning construction methods. For example, if the external water pressure is 140 kPa (20 psi), but soil stability at the tunnel face can be achieved as a compressed air pressure of 80 kPa (12 psi), a large cost savings may result.

The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

The Manhattan section of the New York Water Tunnel No. 3 constructed by the Schiavone/Shea/Frontier-Kemper Joint Venture is a $668 million project. The contract includes a tunnel drive of 8.85 km (29,045 feet), tunnel lining of 14.77 km (48,468 feet)and construction of nine shafts ranging in depth from 143 m (469 feet) to 169 m(555 feet). Construction methods for excavation of the shafts are presented including raise bore, ground freezing, soil excavation, blasting, slashing, muck handling, rock support and shaft final concrete lining.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.'s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

There was no need for the people of Cleveland to ask “Where does the raw sewage go? We want to know!” because it was clear. The raw sewage was being discharged into Lake Erie during heavy rainfall events due to the outdated design of the combined sewer system. In efforts to resolve this ongoing issue for the City of Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District developed Project Clean Lake in collaboration with the US EPA. Project Clean Lake is a 25-year, $3 billion program consisting of seven large-diameter CSO storage tunnels to be constructed beneath the city’s existing infrastructure. The first four tunnels have been completed using traditional hard rock TBM excavation methods. The fifth tunnel, the Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project, presents unique challenges and complexities as it will be the first large-diameter EPB TBM to dig under the City of Cleveland. The project itself consists of one tunnel drive 14,100' (2.7 miles) in length, two pipe jacking tunnels, three large slurry wall shafts, two diversion structures, and three regulator reconstructions. Upon completion of the project, 12 permitted CSO locations along Lake Erie will be taken offline, reducing overflow volumes by approximately 350 million gallons per year. This paper will discuss the current status of construction and the chosen means and methods, including the myriad of nuanced differences between hard rock and EPB TBM tunneling methods. Particular attention will be given to the site preparation, setup, and organization; TBM assembly; and TBM launching practices.

The recovery of gold by ore leaching is influenced by the size of the particles and the chemical environment. Within the experimental error associated to the testing of gold ore, results of a series of leaching tests conducted with natural ores rather than monosized samples confirm that gold dissolution increases with decreasing ore particle size. The tests also indicate that the dissolution of gold in the ore within a size interval is weakly affected by the intensity of the size reduction method.

The ventilation conditions at the underground coal mines are influenced; first: by the disturbances of the natural nature (barometric pressure, methane liberation, etc.), and second: by the disturbances caused by the production process. The major goal of this study was to determine the changes of the ventilation parameters, such as the flow, pressure and methane concentration around the longwall panel, particularly, along the longwall face due to the shearer operation (motion). It is well known from the practice, that the movement of the shearer influences the ventilation parameters around the longwall panel, including the gob area. Until now, these data were gathered in a single or multiple locations at the different time. However, only the simultaneous measurements of all of these values allow seeing the time dependent interrelationships between measured parameters. To be able to show these interrelationships, special experiments, described in this paper, were carried out by the author. These experiments were prepared and executed at the BUDRYK Coal Mine in Poland. During each experiment a simultaneous measurements and monitoring of the barometric pressure, air velocity and methane concentration at the different locations along the longwall face, were performed. The investigation was possible by using a special setup of instruments with a short sampling time, i.e., within 2 seconds. The monitoring of the absolute pressure was conducted by using the digital barometer µBar, developed by EMAG, based on the SETRA pressure transducer, model 470. The velocity of air was measured using the electronic vane-anemometers, developed by IMG-PAN. The methane concentrations were measured using methanometers as the part of the EMAG automatic gas monitoring system. The investigation data confirmed that disturbances due to the operation (motion) of the shearer at the longwall face have a local character. It could be also seen that a large diameter shearer (compared to the total cross-section area available for the air flow) is acting as the piston compressing the air (the overpressure) ahead of the shearer. This fact affects the methane mixing process and flow patterns in the vicinity.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10µm. The current study examined the effects of operating conditions on centrifuge performance. The test conditions included centrifuge bowl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rates, solids concentration, and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using partition curves, along with product yields and solids concentrations.
