The metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand has grown up around the Witwatersrand gold mines. Most of the mines have now been abandoned, but deposits of waste material remain and have been surrounded, and in some instances covered, by urban and industrial sprawl. This paper describes the development of geotechnical measures for the abatement of air and water pollution from abandoned gold-residue dams in the Witwatersrand area. The measures include the stabilization of the surfaces of the dams to prevent wind and water erosion, the terracing of slopes to minimize erosion, and the construction of catchment walls and dams. The measures were developed in terms of the set of guidelines for environmental protection adopted by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 1979.

ABSTRACT Durability tests and evaluation of sub-zero temperature effects to some argillaceous clastic rocks were carried out. Welded tuff, limestone, sandstone and schist samples collected from different parts of Japan were tested and results are presented. Schist and dolomite from Ganesh Himal area along the higher Himalayas of Nepal were also tested, and the results are compared. The slaking tests were performed on all samples in pure water. The results reveal that the slaking index of schist from Japan is lower than that of schist from Nepal. Regarding carbonate rocks, the slaking index of limestone from Japan is higher than that of dolomite from Nepal. A tendency of decrease in slake durability with an increase in porosity is also observed. Freezing and thawing experiments conducted on welded tuff and schist reveal that crack initiates earlier but extends slower in schist than in welded tuff. It is also observed from the freeze-thaw experiment that the welded tuff deteriorates and wears faster than the schist. However, sandstone remains relatively intact for a long run of freeze-thaw cycles. Zusammenfassung Beständigkeitstests sowie die Bewertung der Auswirkungen von Minusgraden auf Tonschiefer Trümmergestein wurden durchgeführt. Dabei wurden geschweißter Tuff, Kalkstein, Sandstein und Schiefer aus verschiedenen Gebieten Japans sowie Schiefer und Dolomitgestein aus dem Ganesh Himal Gebiet, dem höheren Himalaya Nepals, untersucht und die Resultate verglichen. Für alle diese Gesteine wurden Slaking-Tests in reinem Wasser vorgenommen. Die Resultate zeigen, dass das Slaking von Schiefer aus Japan höher als das von Schiefer aus Nepal war, wohingegen bei kalkhaltigem Gestein das Slaking von Kalkstein aus Japan niedriger als das von Dolomitgestein aus Nepal ausfiel. Es wurde dabei auch eine Tendenz zur Löschbeständigkeitsverringerung bei gleichzeitig erhöhter Porosität beobachtet. Gefrier- und Tautests an geschweißtem Tuff und japanischem Schiefer zeigten, dass Risse in Schiefer schneller auftraten, aber sich langsamer ausweiteten als in geschweißtem Tuff. Bei Gefrier- und Tautests wurde ebenfalls beobachtet, dass geschweißter Tuff schneller verfällt und verschleißt als Schiefer. Sandstein hingegen blieb über lange Tau- und Gefrierzyklen intakt Résumé Des tests de solidités et l’évaluation de l’effet des températures en dessous de zéro sur les rocs argileux ont été effectués. Les rocs d’origine volcanique (cendre), les rocs calcaires, sableux et les schistes de différentes régions du Japon, ont été étudiés. Les schistes et les dolomites de la région de Ganesh Himal le long du haut Himalaya (Népal) ont été étudiés et comparés à ceux du Japon. Les tests de désintégration sur les rocs ont été effectués dans l’eau pure. Les résultats montrent que l’index de désintégration des schistes du Japon est inférieur aux schistes du Népal. En ce qui concerne les rocs carbonyles, l’index de désintégration des rocs calcaires du Japon est supérieur à ceux des dolomites du Népal. Une décroissance de la résistance à la durabilité est observée avec une plus grande porosité des rocs. Les tests de congélation-décongelation sur les schistes et les rocs d’origine volcanique (cendre) du Japon montrent une apparition précoce des fissures mais l’expansion des fissures est plus rapide dans les rocs volcaniques. Des tests similaires montrent que les rocs volcaniques (cendre) se désagrégent plus rapidement que les schistes. Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a directed-energy deposition technology that uses arc welding procedures to produce computer-aided designed parts, such as three-dimensional printed metal components. A challenge of additive manufacturing is the anisotropy. Interstitial elements play a significant role in the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V of different grades. In this research, the mechanical properties of Grade 5 and Grade 23 Ti6Al4V were compared for this application. Samples were extracted from WAAM-produced Ti6Al4V walls in different directions (horizontal and vertical) and at different positions (top and bottom). The samples were subjected to optical microscopy and tensile and hardness tests. Grade 5 Ti6Al4V samples were found to have greater strength, greater hardness, and lower ductility, owing to the higher content of interstitial elements compared with Grade 23. The bottom samples had higher strength than the top samples, which is attributed to thermal cycling during manufacturing, resulting in different microstructures.

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country's large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."

Dit is my aangename plig om u voor te stel aan sy Edele, die Minister van Mynwese, van Beplanning, en van Gesondheid, Dr de Wet en sy gade, mev de Wet. Sy Edele Dr de Wet het geen bekendstelling nodig nie-alhoewel hy ons minister vir slegs die afgelope twee jaar is, het hy reeds talle funksies van ons Mynbedryf bygewoon en het baie vriende gemaak onder ons. Hy het homself baie bemind onder ons gemaak toe hy Wes-Driefontein onlangs besoek het om hulle ondersteuning en aanmoediging aan te bied in hulle uur van nood. The Honourable Dr de Wet was born in the Free State. He is a grandson of that very famous general Christiaan de Wet, who caused so much pain to the British forces and for so many months so successfully eluded them in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. He was educated at both the Pretoria and Witwatersrand Universities. He first practised medicine at Boksburg and then moved to Vanderbijlpark, so you see he has an early association with gold mining on the Witwatersrand, and in moving to the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark district he became closely involved in our coal mining and metallurgical industries. South Africa's first steel was poured from a l0-ton open hearth furnace belonging to the Union Steel Corporation in Vereeniging in 1913. Dr de Wet has been mayor of Vanderbijlpark and for several years has been their member of parliament. More recently, the Honourable Dr de Wet has filled with great honour that most important office of Ambassador for the Republic of South Africa in London. At present he wears two hats, in that he is Minister of Planning and of Health, but more important is his cloak, that of Minister of Mines, which I trust offers him the greatest comfort. To fulfill these three arduous tasks must demand of him a terrific devotion to duty, and in doing this he carries on that loyal tradition of service to his fatherland so evident in his grandfather. South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.

Six Associate Members: Messrs B. T. Hosking, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, T. Bulloch, E. J. Jackson, P. J. Muller. Fourteen Visitors. Total Present: 31. The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers' Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. "A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

After the South Deep complex was purchased by Goldfields in 2006a re-feasibility study was done and the life of mine (LOM) was extended to 52 years. This also implied that the mine?s infrastructure would have to be enhanced. One of the changes was the proposal of five new main orepass systems to be excavated before the mine reaches full production in 2013. Excavations started to show signs of scaling, and in some cases, whole new excavations were lost. This particular area was exposed to very high stresses and the geology was prone to body delimination rendering the relevant areas unstable. This paper investigates the conditions at the location of one of the proposed orepass systems, and the best possible orientation was suggested to ensure that the orepass system would be stable and have a practical life. It was, however, found that the fourth leg of the orepass system would require further support to be classified as stable by the chief rock engineer and the section geologist of South Deep. Several support methods and orepass system linings would then be analysed and evaluated to give calculated recommendations on how to productively and practically support an orepass system. The Paradela dam has a spillway that makes it possible to discharge a maximum flow of 400 m3/s, the water discharges being on the river Sela, about 2km upstream the river Cávado. After the first use of the spillway, some landslides have occurred on the right bank of the river Sela as a result of the erosion generated on its base about one hundred meters near some houses of a small village. This paper presents a study performed for the slope stability where finite element results are taken into account. A monitoring program was established that essentially consisted of measuring sub-horizontal displacements in points located in boreholes at different depths and also phreatic levels. Some monitoring results are presented. Le barrage de Paradela a une décharge d’eau avec un débit maximal de 400 m3/s sur le fleuve Sela dans un endroit situé environ 2km sur l'amont du fleuve Cávado. Après la première utilisation de cette décharge, quelques glissements se sont vérifiés sur le versant droit du fleuve Sela résultant de l’érosion générée sur sa base dans une zone à 100 mètres de quelques maisons d’un petit village. Ce travail présente une étude réalisée concernant la stabilité du versant avec la considération des résultats des éléments finis. Un programme d’auscultation a été mis en place pour mesurer les déplacements sub-horizontales sur des points situés en forages à des différentes profondeurs. Quelques résultats de cette monitorization sont présentés. Der Ueberlauf des Padela Dammes ermoeglicht das Ablassen einer max. Wassermenge on 400 m3/s in den Sela Fluss, ca. 2 km flussaufwaerts des Cávado Flusses. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Ueberlaufes traten in ca. hundert Meter Entfernung zur Wohnbebauung eine Dorfes Erdrutschungen am rechten Ufer des Sela Flusses auf, die auf Erosionen am Flussbett zurückzuführen waren. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Boeschungsstabilitaet unter Beruecksichtigung von Berechnungsergebnissen der Finiten Element Methode untersucht. Es wurde ein essprogramm ausgearbeiten, das im Wesentlichen auf Messungen der Untergrundverformungen in verschiedenen Bohrlochteufen sowie auf Grundwassermessungen beruht. Im Folgenden sind einige Messergebnisse dargestellt.

Reverse flotation by cationic collectors is the classical method to reduce the silicon content in magnesite. But because of the low selectivity, there is a large loss of magnesite in the reverse flotation froth. To improve the efficiency of the collector, a novel collector named BK433 was developed in this paper. In order to determine the performance of the BK433 collector, a systematic experimental study was carried out with a high silicon magnesite in China. The suitable pH environment of slurry was confirmed, the depression effect of different depressants was investigated, and the flotation effect was compared with commonly used traditional collectors. The results show that the BK433 shows remarkable good selectivity and collection ability. After the 4 stages reverse flotation, the SiO2 content decreased from 3.76% to 0.25%, SiO2 impurity removal rate reached 94.69%. Meanwhile, the MgO content increased from 45.06% to 46.73%，the recovery of obtained concentrate (calculated by MgO) was 82.79%. Keywords: Magnesite, Desilicication, Reverse flotation, Collector

The mineral exploration environment has observable economic characteristics, the assessment of which provides guidelines for exploration planning in the mining company. The long-term survival of the mining company is directly dependent on successful exploration. Exploration planning contributes to successful exploration through the development of exploration strategies. The objective of exploration planning is to select exploration environments which will enable the mining company to realize best possible profit and corporate risk conditions. Thus, the formulation of exploration strategies is based on profit and corporate risk criteria. Strategic considerations include the selection of commodities as exploration targets, geographic concentration of exploration effort, the realization of acceptable survival conditions, and the structuring of an exploration programme to optimize the economic benefits of the exploration investment process.

The properties and deterioration in strength of cemented tailings backfill (CTB )in the underground acidic environment under oxidizing conditions were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy of the surface of the CTB was carried out, and the sulphuric acid corrosion mechanism elucidated. The properties tested included compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle, variation in the hydrogen ion concentration, and stress-strain relationship in different corrosion periods. The damage model of the CTB was established considering the effects of parameters such as corrosion time and strain on the damage evolution. It was found that the compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion (binder effect), and internal friction angle increased at first and then decreased with exposure time. In the long term, the peak stress decreased with corrosion time while the peak strain increased; elastic modulus, and deformation modulus also decreased. The damage caused by corrosion and by load were related by means of a mathematical model, which revealed the relationships between sulphuric attack, load, and damage to backfill in complex underground environments. During corrosion, the expansion of gypsum and ettringite caused microfractures in the CTB. With increasing corrosion time, micro-cracks developed and proliferated. The mechanism of corrosion damage was found to be the dissolution of hydrogen ions and a sulphate ion reaction that produces an expansive substance, resulting in deterioration of the strength of CTB.

Understanding the behaviour of plasma arcs is an important part of the design and operation of direct current electric arc furnace smelting processes, which are used in the industrial production of many metallurgical commodities. In recent years numerical and computational modelling techniques have begun to illuminate the complexity of arc behaviour and how it is deeply connected to the thermodynamic and physical properties of the arc plasma. Plasma properties may be estimated from first principles using statistical mechanics methods, but this requires as input some knowledge of the composition of the gas phase that occurs over the process during smelting. In this paper the authors describe a workflow using thermochemistry software to predict the expected gas phase composition through a given process, followed by plasma property calculations using an open-source software tool that has been in development for several years. This tool, 'minplascalc' has been in development for several years and is also described in detail here. The workflow is then applied to the calculation of plasma properties of interest for a variety of historical and current pyrometallurgical processes, and the results are compared. The plasma property data are published in an open-access database for general use.

"In an environment like the mining industry, which is characterized by different stakeholders with multiple objectives, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a useful approach for optimal decision-making. The application of MCDA techniques in the mining industry has predominantly been in mine planning and related problems, although no comprehensive survey has previously been undertaken to establish the application trends. A survey of the use of MCDA techniques was therefore conducted using case studies from the literature. It was noted that often two or more methods are applied to the same problem in order to increase confidence in the solution derived. As the number of criteria and alternatives increases, some methods become inefficient. A combination of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method with other MCDA techniques was the most frequently used approach, indicating the efficiency of the AHP method, especially when evaluating problems with more criteria and fewer alternatives. A combination of fuzzy theory with AHP or other methods incorporates uncertainty. The findings from the survey will benefit users applying MCDA techniques to solve mine planning and related problems.IntroductionA country’s natural resources serve the needs of different groups of people within the country. These different groups are collectively known as stakeholders (Herath and Prato, 2006). Stakeholders have different needs, preferences, and expectations, which describe and define the criteria to be considered in decision-making. The options available as solutions describe the alternatives in decisionmaking theory. The criteria and alternatives have to be evaluated simultaneously when making decisions, and this is when multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques become invaluable (Herath and Prato, 2006) because the human mind is considered to be limited when solving complex and intangible problems with several criteria and alternatives (Saaty, 2007). MCDA techniques belong to a broad group of techniques called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. The other group of techniques within MCDM comprises the multi-objective decision-making (MODM) techniques. MODM techniques are generally used to solve problems with an infinite number of alternatives, while MCDA techniques are generally used to solve problems with a finite number of alternatives (Musingwini, 2010)."

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

The diamond industry is no newcomer to High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) as it has used the technology for more than 20 years, predominantly in secondary crushing and recrushing roles. In fact it could be argued that the diamond industry has led the way for the wider minerals industry to consider its application. In existing conventional secondary cone crushing applications, large valuable diamonds are" won" through meticulously managing the recovery process within defined particle size ranges. Conventional crushers operate with relatively large closed side settings, but have the potential to damage diamonds by making direct contact with the sides of the crusher. Cone crushers also result in steep product size distributions that run a high risk of losing many of the smaller, unliberated but more abundant diamonds from the rock. This current comminution paradigm of particle size reduction management results in recrushing processing applications or plants where HPGRs are often used.
