This supplement has been prepared to furnish information on amendments to the regulations that were approved by acting secretary of the Interior on June 24, 1946, while this report was in the press. Page 14, item 2, and page 20, item 4, have been amended by the addition of the following footnote: "Pending the development of a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible blasting unit, a blasting unit of Type II, Class A, covered by Federal Specification WB 411, December 31, 1941 (with or without Amendment 2, June 16, 1945), may be used until Decem- ber 31, 1947. Should a satisfactory multiple-shot permissible unit be made available prior to that date, this interim approval may be terminated." Page 14, footnote / has been amended to read as follows: "The use of charges over 1-1/2 pounds and not exceeding 3 pounds is approved pending further investigation. The approval, which may be withdrawn at any time, expires December 31, 1947, unless renewed. For charges over 1-1/2 pounds, the following additional requirements must be observed: (1) Shot holes must be 6 feet or greater in length. (2) Explosives must be charged in a continuous train with no cartridges deliberately deformed or crushed, with all car- tridges in contact with each other, and with the end cartridges touching the rear of the hole and the stemming, respectively. (3) The permissible explosive must be one showing toxic gas omission that will place it in either Class A or Class B."

The need for a large capacity, high speed computer is more apparent in the revised model than in the original one. Core storage requirements for data and model logic have at least tripled. This dictates the use of one of the large modern machines such as the IBM 360-370 series or the Univac 1108 and 1110, which handle the model without the need for extensive program overlay. Computer time is expensive on these machines, however, and comprehensive analysis has gone into optimizing computer execution time consistent with model information flow sensitivity. For example, revised locomotive tramming routines have been developed which will significantly cut execution time compared to the previous version. Transceiver Applications The computer coding for the model has been developed to enable program execution and testing using a remote terminal on a time sharing system. In fact, nearly all of the coding, debugging, testing and modifications have been performed from a terminal during develop¬ment. The gaming options described in the Model Input Section of this report have been designed so that they are easily changed by the user from any remote site. One restriction on remote applications which could arise, however, is where highly detailed output options are specified, resulting in a large amount of output records which could be handled more efficiently on a high speed printer.

This report describes the development and application of a rail haulage simulator that is readily adaptable for the analysis of a wide variety of operating problems. Various gaming, options have been integrated into the model structure which permit trial and error solutions from a computer terminal prior to capital committment in the actual operation. The high level of information retrieval available allows engineers and managers to develop production data which fit individual needs. In this report, emphasis was placed on the problem of organizing and performing the sequence of operations that are necessary to accomplish a complete mine materials handling simulation. Here, the Rail Haulage Sub-assembly was linked to the Production Sub-system to mine and move coal from seven operating sections to the intermediate and main-line track. The analysis was devoted to the problems associated with how the operating system performs and what alternatives were available to minimize idle times and hence increase productivity. In order to have some objective means of evaluating which of the alter- native methods for production was most appropriate, the choice was to replace the intermediate track with belt conveyors. Since the attempt here was to demonstrate model flexibility and not to establish the goals or trade-offs between computing objectives with which systems judgement must contend, no further alternatives were tried. This is left to management with the data and a problem to solve. Rail haulage simulation is not new, and several, operationally tested models are being used in practice (Bucklen, et. al., 1968).

"The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

[In previous contributions** the writer has called attention to important relations that faulting bears to the migration and accumulation of oil end gas. It has been pointed that favorably situated parts of oil and gas bearing, sands have been enriched by migration art segregation incident to faulting. The escape of water through natural passages such. as fault fissures has induced wide spread hydraulic currents through the beds toward these, points, of diminished pressure and these water currents, plus buoyancy hove contributed largely toward the migration of oil to favorable rock entrapments in the vicinity of the faults.*** The propulsive force of expanding gas has been one of the contributing causes for the hydraulic currents. Paradoxical as it may seem, the escape of gas with entrained oil through fissures has been on important factor In the migration, and accumulation of oil in many faulted areas. Compressed gas is the propulsive force by which oil generally moves to producing wells. It is also one of the propulsive forces by which oil has moved with or even ahead of water under conditions: of differential pressure brought about by faulting.]

Bench-scale experiment~ by the Bureau of Mines showed the gross effect of retention times ranging from 0.1 to 14.5 minutes on the conversion of high-volatile C bituminous coal to liquids and gases. The uncatalyzed coal was hydrogenated at 400°, 450°, and 538° C. and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 p.s.i.g. The percent coal conversion increased rapidly during the initial 3 minutes and asymptotically approached a maximum within 7 minutes at all conditions. Reasonably good correlations of coal conversion with time, pressure, and temperature were obtained. Temperatures up to 900° C. and retention times of about 1 minute are recommended for future experiments with the objective of producing only gaseous hydrocarbons and partially devolatilized coal suitable for use as solid fuel. The reactor contained 13 semicircular ledges, and the retention time was controlled by the rotation of scrapers which swept the coal from ledge to ledge. Only coal feeds that did not adhere to the internal mechanism could be used.

"The Bureau of Mines receives many inquiries concerning favorable areas in which to prospect for gold, procedure to be followed, equipment required, and allied subjects. This circular has been prepared for use in reply to these inquiries.Interest in gold mining and prospecting for gold remains steady. From time to time many people take to the field to search for new gold deposits. A large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the hope that it might assist these newcomers.A majority of the metal mines in the United States have been discovered by qualified prospectors who were searching for valuable minerals at the time. Chance, however, always has played a large part in finding mineral deposits. Some of the discoveries of the past were made by men on other errands, such as rounding up burros or hunting game. Accidental discoveries of ore bodies have been made in building roads and trails and in excavating for mine struc¬tures. Evidence of ore has been brought to the surface by burrowing animals and by ants; gold found in the craws of fowl has led to discoveries of deposits. Important discoveries have been made by men who had no knowledge of rocks or minerals; on the other hand, many ore bodies have been found by experienced prospectors, sometimes after hundreds of untrained men had already passed over the ground.The prospector who carries on his work diligently and intelligently is of course more likely to be rewarded for his efforts than the lazy or unintelligent worker; nevertheless, it is obvious that if valuable deposits are not present at the place being prospected none will be found. Conscientious and painstaking efforts to trace gold to its source usually disclose nothing more valuable than some narrow, unworkable seams; however, many deposits that were developed into profitable mines were found by this method of prospecting. Although some prospectors have made several lucky strikes, many others have spent their working lives searching for gold without finding anything worth while. Probably only one prospector out of several thousand ever finds anything worth developing. Moreover, only 1 out of every 300 or 400 properties developed becomes a profitable mine.Prospecting was begun in the Western States in the fifties as the miners looked for the source of gold found in placers. The search for gold has been continuous since that time; the number of prospectors in the field at any one time, however, has varied greatly. Except in some desert regions, practicallyall of the placer fields now being worked were discovered by old timers; more-over, most of the important gold districts were found by early prospectors. Important discoveries of lode mines, however, have been made from time to time. Most of the area in the mining regions of the West has been searched many times by prospectors, and nearly all of the easily found deposits have been located, but it is reasonable to expect that new gold mines will continue to be found. Most of the future discoveries undoubtedly will be of deposits that do not outcrop. Prospecting for such deposits requires considerable digging.Several important discoveries were made in 1934. One of these, the Rogers-Gentry gold mine at the edge of Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County, Calif., was found by an experienced prospector on an old patented homestead a number of miles from the nearest producing mine. The initial discovery at this mine was an iron-stained, decomposed, silicous limestone outcrop, with no vein structure evident at the surface, near a small, barren quartz outcrop and a water seep. Another discovery, the Silver Queen gold mine, in the same general region and near Mojave, Calif., was found by an experienced miner on an open fraction 400 by 1,400 feet in size between two old properties that were thought to have been worked out years ago. It is estimated that 6,202,235,000 gallons .of- gasoline was produced during the year 1922. The crude light oil- output Burin- the same year is estimated at 111,000,000 gallons, or 1.8 per cent of the gasoline production. In fact, if all the coal mined were coked in by-product ovens, and the light oil recovered therefrom, this product would amount to only 15 to 20 per cent of the quantity of the petroleum gasoline now produced annually. It is obvious therefore, from these figures that the light oils by present coking processes can not assume great importance as a gasoline substitute in a national sense. However, the use of light oil as a motor fuel is of real importance in districts adjacent to by-product coking operations from which a reasonable proportion of the local motor fuel supply may be derived. The certainty of diminution of petroleum resources in the relatively near future demands the utmost utilization of gasoline substitutes from the distillation of coal as well as other sources. Motor benzol is a by-product from the destructive distillation of coal. From 11/2 to 3 gallons of refined motor benzol is obtained per ton of coal carbonized. The light oil vapors are extracted from the by-product coke-oven gas by passing it upward through a series of towers in which these vapors are absorbed in a descending current of "wash" oil (petroleum distillate). The light, oil is recovered from this wash oil by distillation with live steam, the resulting crude light oil consisting of a mixture of benzol, toluol, xylol, solvent naphtha, and a small amount of other substances (unsaturated hydro-carbons, carbon disulphide, and other sulphur compounds, phenols and pyridines) is then transferred to an intermittent still and fractionated into crude motor benzol, which includes the toluol and a part of the xylol or light solvent naphtha. The crude, motor benzol is yellow in color, contains sulphur compounds which corrode copper and brass, and also contains unsaturated bodies which oxidize and polymerize on standing, producing sediment and forming gummy deposits highly objectionable when the benzol is used in motors. Recently 30 men wore viewing the demonstration of a now portable electric arc-welding outfit. A few hours later 17 of the 30 men reported to the doctor for treatment. They were suffering from traumatic conjunctivitis. In two cases the gain was very severe and the symptoms were similar to those of iritis. orphine had to be administered to afford relief from pain. Only two men of the 30 wera not affected in some way from this exposure. These two men were thick-lensed orange-colored glasses. Several of the men wore orange-colored glasses with thin lenses, but the latter were not heavy enough to afford protection.against an exposure as long as took place. The distance of the eye from the are also in- fluences the possibility of injury. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the con- junctiva; the conjunctiva is the mucous membrane covering the inside of the eye- lids and part of the eyeball. Traumatic conjunctivitis is caused by foreign bodies in the eye, exposure of the eyes to high winds, dust, smoke, intense light from electric arc lamps, and from electric welding apparatus. In the instance mentioned above, the inflammation was due to the ultra-violet rays. The ultra-violet rays lie beyond the violet rays in the spectrum and are invisible to the eye. In some cases the effect is so severe that, in addition to conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the skin similar to sunburn is produced. The symptons of conjunctivitis caused by intense light or by the ultra- violet rays are marked photophobia (abnormal intolerance to light), excessive secretion of tears, intense starting of the lid, contraction of the pupil, some- times swelling of the lid, and small ulcers developing on the eyeball or cornea. Unless properly treated by a physician immediately, chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, or retina, and possibly blindness, may result. Under proper treatment most cases get wall in a few days. All treatments should be under the direction of a physician. That usually advised is to place ice packs on the patient's eyes three or four times daily. The pack should be left on from 15 minutes to an hour. The eyes should be irrigated with normal salt solution (a teaspoonful to a quart of sterile vater) or a saturated solution of boric acid several times daily. If there is a discharge of pus, a few drops of a 25 per cent solution of argyrol or a 5 per cent solution of protargol should bo placed in the eyes three to six times daily. The patient should be confined to a darkened room until his condition improves in order to avoid complications. These treatments will reduce the swelling, give the patient confort, and prevent the development of chronic conjunctivitis. In severe cases it may be necessary to administer morphine to relieve the pain.

"Inhalation of crystalline silica is associated with a biphasic biologic response of acute cell injury and chronic pulmonary fibrosis. Dust induced cell membrane injury leading to the release of lysosomal enzymes and cell death has been implicated as the initial important biologic event triggering the fibrosis. However, it ls also possible other biologic reactions could alternatively, or in addition to these enzyme related cytotoxicity reactions, alter the normal functioning of cells. It is well known that phagocytic activation results in the production of oxygen radicals which are highly cytotoxic to cells. In healthy - lung, protection against the toxic effects of the normal balanced ·biologic reactions are provided by a number of defen1e systems including antioxidants. In disease or condition of overproduction of oxygen radicals, biochemical protection may be overwhelmed with resultant cellular injury.Our recent observations have shown that reactive oxygen radicals (ROR) are generated during grinding of crystalline silica. We hypothesized that these newly generated RORs may cause cell injury, lipid peroxidation, or even damage to macromolecules such as DHA. Biochemical aberrations caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica with ROR at occupational settings might overwhelm cellular and antioxidant defense systems of the lung leading to injury and subsequent fibrosis.To test this hypothesis, we have investigated the generation and decay of ROR produced by crystalline silica using electron spin resonance (ESR) and investigated its toxicity with conventional biologic tests at various time intervals after grinding. We also studied the decay of these newly generated RORs in buffer and the effect of antioxidants and scavengers in the abolition of cellular damages."

As part of its thermodynamic investigations of mineral compounds, the Bureau of Mines has written an algorithm based on Newton's method for solving for the characteristic Debye temperature of a compound, from heat capacity and temperature data. A listing of a FORTRAN IV program based on this algorithm, for calculating Debye temperatures given heat capacities or for calculating heat capacities given Debye temperatures, is available from the author upon request.

"The petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines in its laboratory investigations, has had occasions to develop a number of types of electrical heating equipment. It was found that electric heaters could be used to particular advantage in the standard distillation test for gasoline. (Dean, E.W., Motor Gasoline, Properties, Laboratory Methods of Testing and Practical Specifications, Bureau of Mines Technical raper 214, 1919, 33 pages.) In order to assist in rendering this type of heater available for general use, a description of the apparatus developed by the Bureau was published. (Dean, E.W., A convenient electric heater for use in the analytical distillation of gasoline,. Jour. Ind, and Eng. Chem., Vol.10, 1918, page 823.) Shortly after the article was printed a chemical supply house undertook the manufacture of an electric heater suitable for gasoline distillation. A preliminary model was examined and tested by the Bureau and modifications were suggested that were incorporated in the type of heater that was finally marketed.Description of the Bureau of Mines-heater: The electric heater developed by the Bureau has an inverted conical resistance Plament surrounded by a layer of heat-insulating material and mounted in a metal case having a top of hard asbestos (Transite) board. The resistance element is a helix of nickel-chromium alloy wire held by a molded core of alundum. The Bureau heaters are generally of about 330 watts capacity and are used with stock types of regulating rheostats capable of reducing the effective wattage to about 43 the full-load maximum."

"INTRODUCTION The Phelps Stokes iron deposit, also known as the Iron Mountain claim, was examined by G. L. Thompson, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1943. As a result, the Division of Geophysical Exploration 3/ made a magnetorater survey of the deposit in June 1944, and the Mining Branch included it in a,project to explore Nevada iron deposits.The Bureau explored the deposit from September to November 1944 by means of 643 feet of diamond drilling and 445 feet of trenching holes were drilled, all of which penetrated more than: 100 feet of good-grade magnetite, although nearly all the ore except that found in the first hole contained an excessive amount of sulfur. Trenching was done largely over the first two holes, PS-1 and PS-2, and exposed the full width of the ore.The deposit is in Nye County, Nevada, 7.7 miles east of Gabbs. The property was discovered in 1902 was patented in 1907. There has been no production from the property and except for the Bureau's investigation,,has not been, explored since it was patented.Magnetite is the principal ore mineral; it occurs as fine-grained particles associated with sulfides and cemented with talc and calcite."

"The biologic events leading to coal workers' pneumoconiosis (C'WP) are not yet fully understood. There is no good correlation between toxicity studies or animal models with human epidemiologic and pathologic data. Several studies have shown that the severity and prevalence of the CWP in miners correlate strongly with the rank and type of the coal mined. However this has not been found to be the case with laboratory animal models or in vitro studies. In 1980 Russian scientists Artemov and Resnik suggested that the discrepancy may be related to the excessive amount of short-lived free radicals present in freshly generated coal mine dust. Because of their short life, such free radicals would be absent in the ""stale"" coal dust used in most animal experiments. To test this hypothesis we have undertaken a systematic study of the generation, reactivity with oxygen and biological significance of free radicals in coal dust.Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of radical production and kinetics of decay. ESR signals from the newly generated radicals decreased with time on exposure to oxygen or when stored in biological buffers at a rapid rate. In vitro biological tests were carried out which suggest that the reaction between the newly generated radicals and oxygen plays a significant role in the sample's cytotoxicity.Materials and MethodsESR measurements were made at X-band (~9.7 GHz) using a computer-controlled Bruker ER200D ESR spectrometer. 11te two coals studied in detail were obtained from the Pennsylvania State University Coal Depository. These were, a bituminous sample, PSOC-1172 (72% carbon) and an anthracite sample, PSOC 867 (95% carbon). Coal particles of several millimeter (mm) dimensions were evacuated to a pressure of ~10-3 mm Hg typically overnight. Without exposure to air, these particles were ground in an agate mortar with an agate pestle for about 30 minutes and then sieved through a 20 \1111 mesh filter before ESR measurements or cytotoxicity studies. As an index of cytotoxicity, hemolysis was measured according to the method of Harrington, with minor modifications. Sheep erythrocytes (2%) were incubated with test samples at 37°C for one hour, and the hemoglobin released was quantitatively estimated photometrically. Additionally, release of alveolar macrophage enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LOH) was estimated after incubation of the macrophages with the coal particles at different time intervals after the grinding. Enzyme activity was assayed according to the method of Wrobleski and LaDue and expressed as percent of enzyme released in 2 hours per million cells with 1 mg of coal."

"The successful use of the gas mask by the American Army it France in combatting the poisonous gases of German .shells caused many Army men to feel that the as masks were proof against any kind of gas which might be encountered. The result has been that from time to time there have been reported in the press, deaths of former army men through using their masks to enter various kinds of gases such as illuminating gas, gasoline vapor, and the gaseous atmospheres produced by mine fire. Such a case has just been reported from a mine, in Copperopolis, California, where a former Army man lost his life in descending a mine shaft filled with the fumes of a mine fire. Another man who, in attempting to rescue him, merely used a dust respirator, lost his life also.While the American type of the Army gas mask was developed by the Bureau of Mines for the War Department, and since the war a section of the Bureau's in¬vestigative force has been developing industrial gas masks for certain specificgases, the Bureau has repeatedly called to the attention of the public the fact that such masks have serious limitations and in no case should a gas mask be used in underground workings for the reason that there may be an insufficient amount of oxygen to breathe, (and the gas mask does not supply oxygen) or there may be present carbon monoxide, which the Army mask will not remove, and there always is some carbon monoxide produced by a mine fire or by a coal-mine explosion, or by a blast of dynamite or other explosive.It is true that the Bureau has been developing a mask which may take care of a small percentage of carbon monoxide, that is, one per cent and under, but in mine fires and after explosions, there may be, and frequently is, a much larger percentage of carbon monoxide in the mine atmosphere. Masks such as these, for small percentages of carbon monoxide and associated gases are for use in connection with industrial surface plants, as for example, on the top of a blast furnace or around gas producers in the open air."

Graphite in the Suffern deposits near Hillburn, N. Y., consists of flakes ranging in size from fines to one-half inch in diameter. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Suffern deposits in the spring of 1943. Gneiss outcrops were examined, and five trenches excavated and sampled. The graphite is not confined to any definite zone but occurs in small, local pockets. Eleven samples were collected and combined for laboratory tests. Tests by the Bureau of Mines indicate that the graphite ore can be beneficiated by stage crushing, "skin flotation" of coarse flakes, and wet flotation of minus 10-mesh flakes. Over 90, percent of the graphite was recovered.

Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.

A mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines revealed no mines or prospects and no past or present mining claims in the Agua Tibia Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The area is underlain mainly by weakly foliated gabbro similar to rock that has hosted gem- and lithium-bearing pegmatites in the Pala district about 6 mi to the south. However, no gem- or lithium-bearing pegmatites have been discovered in the WSA. Nearby quarries in the gabbro have yielded rock for facing and dimension stone. No sand, gravel, or energy (oil, gas, coal, or geothermal) resources were identified.
