The instrumentation specification in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) report of March, 1970, set forth some rather general guidelines that the seismic surface system should follow. The fact that there was no comparable equipment in existence at that time, and the need to produce a system from presently available equipment, was spelled out in that document. The features that the system should include were listed, and included: • Quick and simple deployment • Portability • Battery-powered operation • All-weather operation • Computational simplicity and speed • High reliability and long shelf-life • Dual service for location and communication • Adaptability to widely varying seismic velocities. topography, and geologic structures • Minimum maintenance • Capability of continuous operation for extended periods, and • Reasonable cost Since that report, there has been a substantial amount of field work addressing the trapped miner detection and location problem carried out by Westinghouse Corporation under contract with the Bureau of Mines. Two complete surface systems have been designed, built, and field tested and substantial documentation has been produced on the mine environment and background noise using these systems. These systems, built from off-the-shelf equipment, have been designed with maximum flexibility in mind in order to explore what con¬figuration a field unit should have.

Continuously monitor air-borne radon daughters that are a hazard to underground miners. Approach A beta detector continuously counts beta activity collected on a filter paper to allow calculation of exposure in working level units. How It Works At each Site a constant flow pump draws mine air through a fiberglass filter located in front of a beta detector (pancake type Geiger Mueller tube), Radioactive particles (products of the radon 222 gas emanating from the mine walls) collect on the filter and decay, releasing alpha and beta particles as well as gamma rays. A portion of the beta particles penetrate the Geiger tube window and create electrical pulses in the tube. These pulses are then amplified and sent by a coaxial type or shielded electrical cable to a central monitor located some distance from a working level detector. The extrapolation of results from reconstructed laboratory soil columns to field conditions is difficult because of the limitations of laboratory experiments. Permeability and elution tests performed in the laboratory differed from the natural state in that the soil was sieved through 1/4 inch screen to remove large stones and roots, its density was controlled by tamping the soil into two-inch I.D. tubes instead of normal weathering, and water and latex were applied with a constant head of liquid. Tube wall effects are important in interpreting data. Conversely, interpretation of field results were confounded by non-homogeneities within the sample tested, a soil profile with gradation of permeability and density with depth, and uncontrolled weather conditions and seasonal changes that affected the results. Nevertheless, both laboratory and field tests showed that a specific latex did perform as a soil sealant. In view of these facts a soil box experiment was designed to overcome some of the disadvantages associated with the small laboratory soil columns and the field experiments. Two wood soil boxes 5 ft x 5 ft x 5 ft were built in the greenhouse at the Uniroyal Research Center. They were lined with plastic PVC sheeting provided with tubes every six inches of depth on one side of each box to measure water removal rates under saturated conditions. Tensiometer gauges were placed at depths of 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48 inches and Bouyoucos blocs and resistance thermometers were positioned at 6, 24 and 48 inch depths. Each box was filled with a uniform sub-soil obtained from Ogdensburg, N. J. The texture of this soil was determined to be a sandy loam by the ASTM Hydrometer method, as shown below: [ ] The boxes were thoroughly wetted by sprinkling to abet settling and allowed to dry by draining to check seepage ports and functioning of tensiometers.

Various methods of monitoring slip movements on bedding planes, as well as examination of rock burst damage in stopes, suggest that many rock bursts in the Lucky Friday Mine are closely associated with these movements. Slip displacements along bedding simultaneously reduce the physical dimensions of stopes and increase compressive stress along stope margins. Such changes, in turn, contribute directly to sudden failures of rock and cemented sandfill surrounding stopes. We believe that the reduction of rock burst hazards must be based on a clear understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. The current work emphasizes the mechanical role of wall rock movement and seismicity in generating conditions that promote rock burst damage. Based on our interpretations of these mechanisms, we briefly address several hypothetical practices that could influence rock burst hazards in similar mining situations. The overall goal of this research is to advance the NIOSH mission of improving the health and safety of the nation’s workers.

Losses of alloying metals in furnace flue dusts, grinding swarfs, and mill scale produced during the manufacture of stainless steel are substantial. About 25 million lb Cr, 8.7 million lb Ni, and 150,000 lb Mo and other critical metals can be made available annually for recycling by a process developed by the Bureau of Mines. Stainless steel wastes pelletized with a portland cement binder were reduced in a small electric-arc furnace by a two-stage process to produce a recyclable alloy containing Cr, Ni, Mn, and Fe. The initial reduction was with carbon; the second, with ferrosilicon. Results are compared with previously reported laboratory induction melting tests. A 2,000-lb demonstration test of the process in a commercial electric-arc furnace is also described. Data are also presented on three 1,500-lb tests made using various slag conditions in the electric-arc furnace. Recoveries up to 99 pct of the Fe, Cr, and Ni contents of stainless steel wastes were obtained in using the process.

The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center2 conducted experiments with mine conveyor belt samples in a 20-L furnace and in a laboratory fire tunnel to measure and compare the major toxic gas concentrations evolved during the combustion of the materials. The toxic gas concentrations, measured simultaneously through a multiport sampling device and treated as yield values, included hydrogen chloride (HO), hydrogen cyanide (HeN), oxides of nitrogen (NO, treated as NO), and carbon monoxide (CO). The data obtained from the two experimental systems were in good agreement. Correlations were developed for the toxic gas yields as a function of the percentage of chlorine (for HO gas), nitrogen (for HCN and NO, gases), and carbon (for CO gas) contained in the original materials. The toxic gas yields were also used to calculate a toxicity index (TI) parameter to assess the potential gas toxicity of belt materials during a fire. Furthermore, the TI and the mass loss burning rate values were used to calculate a toxicity hazard (TH) parameter to estimate the toxic gas hazard produced by a burning belt in a ventilated system. Results show that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts released higher HC1 concentrations because of the higher chlorine content; styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) belts released higher CO, HCN, and NOz concentrations because of the higher carbon and nitrogen contents. The TI's, however, were greater for the PVC belts due primarily to the higher levels of HC1 produced. The fire tunnel data indicate that the SBR belts can bum with higher mass loss rates than the PVC belts, resulting in a potentially higher toxic hazard (higher TH values) even though their TI values were lower than those of the PVC belts.

1.In 1972 over 595 million tons (51+0 million metric tons) of bituminous coal were mined; 49% of this tonnage was obtained by surface mining methods. Authorities have predicted that the tonnage of surface mined coal will increase in the future, especially since oil and gas resources are becoming limited. 2. Demands for clean air have increased mining activities in the low-sulfur coal deposits in the West. Pollution problems arising from these operations will be considerably different than those found in the East. The deposits are located in arid to semi-arid regions. Coal seams are generally aquifers and are a principle source of fresh water. Therefore mining may result in alteration of groundwater distribution patterns by aquifer disruption. In general, pollution problems associated with western mining are not well characterized. 3.Since any disturbance of the surface will alter the environment in the vicinity of the disturbance, pre-mining planning is a prerequisite to any environmentally successful surface mining operation. If properly carried out, the adverse social, economic, and environmental effects of coal surface mining will be minimized. Certain land areas will be unsuitable for surface mining where: a.Reclamation is not physically or economically possible. b.Mining is incompatible with existing land use plans. c.The proposed mining area is of critical environmental concern. Core drilling is the most satisfactory method of obtaining accurate information for pre-mining planning. 4. Unaccountable strip mining in the past has created problems that are still present today. Contour mining methods that involve the indiscriminate dumping of overburden on the downslope is one of the largest single sources of sediment from strip mining. However, land disturbed by strip mining can be reclaimed. Techniques have been and are being developed by which mining and reclamation are integrated into a single operation. Mountain top removal, head-of-hollow fill, and block cutting are examples in contour surface mining. These methods drastically reduce pollution problems associated with contour stripping.

For many years there have been small scale tests available for evaluating the toxic fumes production by cap-sensitive explosives (DOT Class 1.1), but these could not be used with blasting agents due to the large charge sizes and heavy confinement required for proper detonation. Considering the extensive use of blasting agent in construction and mining, there is a need to determine the quantities of toxic fumes generated by blasting agents. At the International Society of Explosive Engineers Twenty Third Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in 1997, the authors reported on a facility for detonating large (4.54 kg), confined blasting agent charges in a controlled volume that had been constructed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Lab’s Experimental Mine. Since 1997, this facility has been used to collect data on toxic fumes produced by the detonation of various ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) mixtures and several cap-sensitive explosives. ANFO composition ranging from 1 to 10 percent (pct) fuel oil have been studied. As expected from previous studies, with an increase in fuel oil content the carbon monoxide production increases, while nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production decrease. The detonation velocity varies from 3,000 to 4,000 m/sec for the 1to 10 pct range of fuel oil content, suggesting that ANFO mixes with improper fuel oil content may appear to detonate properly, while their fume production differs significantly from optimum. The study also considers such factors as degree of confinement, water contamination, and aluminum content on blasting agent fume production. Results indicate that water contamination of the ANFO has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but causes significant increase in nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Decreasing confinement from Schedule 80 steel pipe to 0.4-mm thick sheet metal also has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but significantly increases nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Adding5 and 10 pct aluminum to the ANFO had no clear effect on carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, or nitrogen dioxide production.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the adaptability of the Meteorology Research Inc.2 (MRI) nephelometer and the Sinclair-Phoenix smoke meter for use in routine, analytical, smog-chamber experiments and to compare their responses to aerosol during these experiments. Both instruments' sampling systems were modified--smaller size sample input systems were studied using the nephelometer and a secondary sample system was added to the smoke meter to allow measurement of Aitken or condensate nuclei. Both instruments were easily adapted for use with small smog chambers and both displayed good precision and sensitivity to aerosol. A correlation was shown to exist between the two instruments' responses to aerosol. This correlation makes it possible to report the Sinclair-Phoenix measurements in visibility and/or mass units if desired.

This paper details the computer hardware and software integrated to provide computer-assisted control and monitoring of four different coal mining machines. The backbone of each system is a U. S. Bureau of Mines integrated distributed microcomputer control network called BOM/NET. The network provides connections for intelligent sensors and systems that provide for navigation, diagnostics, and computer control. Many different computer systems using various operating systems (including RMX I, UNIX, VXWORKS, DOS and DCX51) have been connected to the network and each have had complete network functionality. A description of the network's integration to Joy' 16CM, a Joy 14CM, a Jeffrey 102, continuous mining machines, and a custom built auger machine is provided. The networks for the Joy 16CM, the Joy 14CM, and the Jeffrey 102 have been installed and extensively tested at the Bureau's surface test facility. The Jeffrey 102 system has also been tested in a highwall coal seam. The Joy 14CM will soon be tested underground.

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Information such as coalbed name, location (state and county), depth of sample, gas content, and coal rank are available from the system. The data can be used for

The recovery of phosphate rack from the ores in the land-pebble district of Florida is a simple washing and screening operation. In the gashing plants coarse phosphate only is saved. Log-Washer overflows and screen-undersize products containing an appreciable content of fine phosphate are discarded. The phosphate grains in the material discharged to waste are generally finer in size than the mesh--14 to 20 mesh or 0.346 to 0.03 inch--of the finest screen in the washer. The operators state that the washers ordinarily recover from 50 to 60 per cent of the phosphate content of the matrix mined. Any increase that can be effected in the recovery of phosphate would be of advantage to the industry and would conserve the mineral resources of the country. In considering possible methods that might increase the recovery obtained in phosphate-washing plants the application of flotation, if it could be successfully developed, seemed to warrant investigation.

Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small-scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single-hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

"Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States killed 234 employees during January 1924, according to reports from State mine inspectors to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, Included in the number of fatalities are 68 deaths caused by two explosions during the month, one explosion occurring in a mine at Johnson City, Ill., and causing 32 deaths, and the other in a mine at Shanktown, Pa., and causing 36 deaths. The fatality rate for the month was 3.94 per million tons, based on a production of 59,435,000 tons of coals In January 1923 the fatality rate was 3.52, based on 206 deaths and an output of 58,458,000 tons.Bituminous mines in all States reported 202 fatal accidents, the production being 51,170,000 tons., and the fatality rate being 3.92, as compared with 3.28 for January last year, For the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, the reports covered 32 fatalities, which, on the month's output of 7,955,000 tons, indicated a fatality rate of 4.02 per million tons, as against 4.89 for January 1923.As compared with January 1923, the reports for January of the present year indicated lower fatality rates per million tons for all of the main causes of accidents except explosions. For falls of roof and coal, the fatality rate per million tons declined from 1.85 in January 1923 to 1,68 in January 1924; for haulage accidents the rate declined from 0.62 to 0.42; for explosives, from 0.19 to 0.12; for electricity, from 0.12 to 0.07. This Technology News will provide details of the Improvements made to the shearer-clearer and provide guidelines for installing the system. How It Works The shearer-clearer system consists of several strategically-mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. The sprays redirect the airflow around the shearer into both a clean and a contaminated split. The sprays confine the contaminated split or dust cloud to the coal face, allowing the shearer operators to remain in the clean split on the walkway

Economic growth in Cameroon was restricted during 1987 owing to a decrease in oil prices during 1986 and the falling value of the U.S. dollar in 1987. The yearly budget reflected a significant drop in revenues and expenditures. Taxes on imports and some exports were increased to raise revenue. The shortage of revenue and the lack of liquidity had restricted the Government's operation and investment programs. External public debt reached an estimated $3.2 billion2 representing 20.8% of the estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of $12.3 billion. The Government operated at an 8.7% deficit in 1987. The GDP growth rate had fallen to 0.6% in 1987 and was projected to remain at that level in 1988. Economic planning was managed through a series of 5-year plans. The country was under the sixth 5-year plan, which would end in 1991. The plan stressed balanced development as one method to achieve the desired results. Sources of revenue for the year included direct and allied taxes (31.2%). customs collections (31.0%), and oil royalties (28.0%). The oil royalties in 1987 represented a larger part of the budget than in 1986. In January 1987, eight African oil exporting countries, including Cameroon, formed the African Petroleum Producers' Association (APPA). The eight countries represented about 80% of the total African oil production of 5.2 million barrels per day in 1987. Cameroon produced approximately 3% of total APPA oil production. Cameroon produced approximately 68.5 million barrels of crude oil in 1987, slightly less than that produced in 1986. Earnings also fell in 1987, not only from falling production, but also from declining oil prices and the fall in value of the U.S. dollar on world markets. Oil had been the main stimulus of Cameroon's growth throughout the past decade, and a key generator of export revenues and financial resources for the economy.

Thls report summarizes work done under Bureau of Mines contract H0357100, "Development of a Crimp Connector for Trailing Cable Splices." The purpose of this effort was to establish optimum connector design conditions to meet flex cycle, pullout and electrical resistance criteria on phase power conductors. Field testing of "optimum design" connectors is briefly discussed. One of the primary objectives of contract H0357100 was to enable one to design better performing phase conductor connectors. Illustrating the practical significance of this 1s a discussion on the development of a new splice kit for trailing cables. The connectors in this kit were designed in accordance with the design methods described in the contract final report. Kit components, test data, and a connector installation tool are also discussed. The successful effort on the phase connector has resulted in contract H0377042, entitled "Design and Testing of Joining Sleeves for Trailing Cable Ground and Pilot Wires." The purpose of this contract (currently in effect) is to improve ground-conductor and pilot-wire performance. Significant findings to date are discussed.

"Introduction. The first short—flame explosives were made in the United States during the year 1902, then the mount was 11,300 pounds. In 1902 they were designated ""permissible explosives"", and were required to meet specific tests. By 1912 the total consumption thereof had increased to 24,630,000 pounds, equal to 5 per cent of the total quantity of all kinds of explosives produced in this country; while in 1922 the total was 43,429,000 Pounds, or 10 per cent of the production, and 18 per cent of the explosives used for the mining of coal.Each year the Bureau compiles statistics of explosives, one important object of this being to show the extent to which permissible explosives are replacing other classes of explosives in coal—mining operations, and the influence of such replacement in reducing the number of accidents caused by explosives in this class of mines. The consumption of permissible since 1916 has considerably exceeded the quantity of high explosives (dynamites, etc.) used in coal mines. While the increase in use of permissible is good, the replacement of other explosives therewith is not nearly as good as with be, considering the known general efficacy and safety of permissibles."

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it is the second annual edition of this study in a separate volume that represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional volumes that now constitute the U.S. Bureau of Mines international, geographically arranged studies. In this regard, it also extends previous works under this title that appeared in the inter-national volume of the Minerals Year-book from the inception of that volume (the 1963 edition) until it was subdivided into six separate volumes in 1989. Following the traditional format of past chapters under this title, the basic statistical presentations herein deal chiefly with 1990, and in a few instances with 1988 or 1989; these latter two only because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting on the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1990 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

Investigation into the expressions of the field produced by a loop over a conducting half space or in an infinite conducting half space are well documented. Reasonably complex descriptions of the effects of stratification also are reported. However, a model which must contain all of these complexities because of transmission to depths of 15,000 feet and also include the pertibation of the field by a verticle cylindrical steel casing loses its facility in the field or for quick, accurate approximation to field magnitudes and phase. This paper describes the results of two field tests to determine the attenuation and phase versus depth and frequency of an electromagnetic wave (induction field). A simple two-layer model is postulated to predict the magnitude and phase of the induced field which does not require sophisticated computing tools. Correlation of the model with experimental results show agreement of most amplitude measurements to within 3 db and most phase measurements to within five degrees. The tests were conducted in a 7400 foot deep well in Nevada and an 11,000 foot deep well in Wyoming which had conductivities ranging from .0025 mhos/m to .25 mhos/m. The surface transmitting dipole had an area of ~ 10 6 feet squared and constant frequency signals of 1.5 Hz to 20 Hz were transmitted through the earth utilizing less than 65 watts of power. Model Description The magnetic field intensity components generated by a magnetic dipole immersed in an infinite homogeneous medium can be expressed in spherical coordinates as: [ ] where N, I, and (p a ) are the transmitting antenna turns, current, and effective area, respectively, and r is the range from the loops circumference to the measurement point.
