Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. To clean coal mine air by developing a low-cost scrubber suitable for belt transfer and similar applications. Approach Design a scrubber operated by water only, with no moving parts. Use conventional water spray nozzles located within a duct to both move and clean the air. Use a droplet eliminator to get the water droplets and mist back out of the airstream. How It Works Conventional scrubbers require a mechanical fan driven by either an electric or a hydraulic motor. They also require water sprays and some type of scrubbing mechanism. The water powered scrubber, however, offers higher reliability over conventional scrubbers since it utilizes the water sprays to both move the air and scrub the particulate from the air. Conventional water spray nozzles are placed near one end of a rectangular duct open at both ends. The sprays are directed towards the far end of the duct where a stationary wave blade water droplet eliminator is located. Movement of the water spray droplets coming from the nozzles generates (by momentum transfer) an air movement In the same direction as the sprays. Chapman-Jouguet detonation calculations were carried out for pentaerythri-tol tetranitrate (PETN), TNT, and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) explosives using the compressibility form of an equation of state of hard spheres based upon Percus-Yevick (PY) theory, and a chemical equilibrium detonation code called TIGER. Similar calculations were also carried out with the Becker-Kistiakowsky-Wilson (BKW) equation of state. For PETN, the BKW equation gives somewhat better agreement with experimental values of detonation velocity and pressure. However, in terms of experimental temperatures and concentrations of the minor product species (NO), the predictions of the PY equation are shown to be more satisfactory. Similar comparisons of experimental and theoretical results for TNT and AN-FO indicate that the PY equation has general utility in predicting the detonation properties of condensed explosives at moderate loading densities (Po < 1.3 g/cm3).

A three-dimensional dynamic programing method is presented for determining the optimal ultimate open pit limit. The method given is based on the block concept and is an extention of the two-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann approach. The three-dimensional technique presented herein is fast and simple and may be used for an initial open pit evaluation when only limited data are available or as a more refined model when the entire deposit is well delineated. The method is illustrated by simple numerical examples and is also presented in algorithmic form. A computer program was written in Fortran IV which implements the three-dimensional algorithm and some computational aspects are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines smelted samples of chromite ore and concentrate from the General Services Administration (GSA) purchasing depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in a submerged-arc furnace to establish smelting conditions and the energy requirement to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Raw material, in the form of ore, flux, and reductant, and electrical energy are available on the Pacific coast to smelt the chromite. The concentrate can be smelted without prior agglomeration by employing hogged wood (wood chips) as a major portion of the reductant. The energy requirement is relatively low, about 3,960 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. The ferrochromium produced will contain about 60 percent chromium. In addition to the smelting data, a statistical summary of the grade and amount of chromite purchased during the stockpile program and estimated chromite reserves and production volume are given. It is estimated that 632,000 tons of Cr203 contained in chromite of all grades is available in the western coastal States. Of this total there appears to be sufficient metallurgical-grade and beneficiable ore to sustain a smelting operation for 25 years at a consuming rate of 25,000 tons a year, utilizing material comparable to that delivered to the Government stockpile.

Reduce costs of surface mine reclamation by improving scaper operating efficiency and reducing tire costs. Approach The Wheel Slip Monitor senses and compares the peripheral speed of a scraper&apos;s four tires 10 the true ground speed of the scraper, and alerts the operator if any of the tires exceeds a predetermined amount of slip. This system helps scraper operators reduce wheel slip during the loading cycle, thereby improving the loading efficiency of the scaper and reducing tire wear and damage. How It Works The system consists of five ultrasonic doppler velocity-sensing devices for measuring the speed of each wheel as well as the true ground velocity (see photograph). Each sensor produces an electrical output signal having a frequency proportional to the speed of the tire or terrain. The signals are conveyed through electrical cables to a control box in the operator&apos;s cab where they are converted to voltages proportional to individual wheel speeds (see photograph). The signals are further processed to activate a blinking red light, corresponding to any individual wheel which is slipping, and to sound a beeping tone that is audible to the scraper operator. The rate at which the light blinks and the tone beeps is proportional to the degree of slip. Alerted, the operator can take corrective action.

"Introduction.The third annual mine-rescue maneuvers of the Globe-Miami District First Aid and Mine Rescue Association were held at Globe, Ariz., on November 5 and 6, 1923. The first demonstration was held in October 1922, and the results** from that experiment, both in the practical training and the interest aroused in the apparatus men, were so much more satisfactory than those from the ordinary smoke-chamber training, that Orr Woodburn, director of the Association, decided to hold similar maneuvers at frequent intervals. The second test was held on March 21-22, 1923, in connection with the meeting of the Southwest Mining Section of the National Safety Council at Globe.Place and Organization.The recent maneuvers were held in the same mine and conducted in the same general manner as the first, and the points of interest not brought out previously are described below. By studying the accompanying map the movement of the teams can be better understood.Thirty-three apparatus men were out on the first day and thirty-two on the second day, a total of forty-three men being trained.Mr. Woodburn was aided in directing the work by his two assistants from the mine-rescue station, two local safety engineers, and an engineer from the Bureau of Mines. Local mine superintendents and the State deputy mine inspector were interested spectators."

A Bureau of Mines method for recovering nickel, cobalt, and copper from low-grade domestic laterites is described, which includes the unit operations of solvent extraction and electrowinning. Previous Bureau work indicated that addition of Na2S04 (sodium sulfate) to the nickel electrolyte improved current efficiency in nickel electrowinning. The present study determines the compatibility of Na2S04 with nickel strip-ping in the solvent extraction operation of the Bureau method. The effect of adding 100 g/l Na2S04 on nickel stripping, phase disengagement, and pH was determined in comparative laboratory-scale tests. In continuous-circuit testing, Na2S04 reduced stripping efficiency to the extent that five, instead of four, strip stages were required for complete stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent. In tests made in a phase-disengagement cell that had a variable settler area, the addition of Na2S04 did not significantly affect phase separation characteristics. The pH of the nickel electrolyte in the temperature range of 20° to 65° C was also unaffected by the addition of Na2S04. An economic evaluation showed that the energy saved by adding Na2S04 to the electrolyte would more than offset the cost of adding another stripping stage.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to improve the flotation response of coals that are difficult to wash by froth flotation. A literature survey and experimentation showed that, for the most part, refractory coals can be floated with oily collectors and frothers. Collector reagent consumption can be minimized and the selectivity of the flotation enhanced by assuring adequate, but not prolonged, reagent conditioning. Where flotation selectivity is especially poor, two-stage rougher-cleaner flotation is recommended. It was concluded that a major problem with refractory coals is predicting when they will appear in a flotation circuit so that supplementary flotation collectors can be added. Coal losses due to variation in the floatability of the feed might be reduced if a nonpolar collector such as kerosine or fuel oil is used along with a frother as general coal flotation practice.

To develop a magnetic levitation transport system that can reduce the cost and improve safety in transporting coal from the face of underground coal mines to the surface. Background Many conventional mining operations use conveyor belts to transport coal from an underground face to the surface of the mine. The Mag-Lev Transport System design replaces conveyor belts with magnetically levitated coal haulage containers moving through a dedicated pipe¬line. Cost estimates, based on current design data, show the Mag-Lev Transport System would have operating and capital costs that are less than or equal to those of an equivalent-capacity conveyor belt system. The safety hazards associated with conveyor belt systems include exposure to moving parts and pinch points, potential fire hazards due to mechanical friction, and the exposure of miners to respirable dust. These hazards would be eliminated or significantly reduced by this novel technology. Approach The Mag-Lev Transport System uses magnetic levitation technology that allows noncontact, frictionless conveyance of a levitated body within a dedicated transit corridor. The mag-lev technology utilizes two types of permanent magnets coupled with an electronic position control system to achieve noncontact levitation. Levitation is provided by neodymium-iron boron (NdFeB) magnets mounted in the base of the haulage containers and inexpensive ceramic-5 magnets located in the bed of the transit corridor. An electronic position control system is used to overcome the inherent instability of the repelling permanent magnets. Proximity sensors, a signal processing circuit, electromagnetic actuators, and fixed ferrous side rails are the major components of the positioning system.

Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted at three sites in Wyoming in an attempt to detect underground rubble zones in oil shale and to determine their size and resistivity contrast. The zones were detected at Rock Springs sites 4 and 5, but none were detected at Green River site 1. The resistivity of the rubble zones at sites 4 and 5 is greater than that of the surrounding rock. The zones at sites 4 and 5 are concluded to be roughly ovaloid in shape, with a horizontal diameter of 33 m and a vertical thickness of 24 m. Both rubble zones and the blasting that created them are considered to be centered at a depth of 24 m.

Generate less respirable dust during mining by reducing the clogging and downtime of the water sprays on mining machines, especially on continuous miners. Approach An improved filtering system, having commercially available components, has been designed and tested. How It Works The improved filtering system shown opposite is mounted on the mining machine, where It traps particles of coal and pipe scale which cause most clogging of the water sprays. Water entering the system first flows through a ?Y" strainer, which screens out particles larger than 1/8 inch diameter. Next, the water whirls through a small hydrocyclone. Most of the remaining smaller particles are removed and pass Into the accumulator compartment built into the hydrocyclone. The water also flows through a final filter. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to devise technology for increasing the Nation&apos;s mineral supply by recovering valuable constituents from currently discarded waste materials. Municipal solid waste (MSW), presently a major disposal problem, represents a significant source of metals, glass, and a combustible fraction that can be used to supplement coal in generating heat and electricity. As part of the total metallurgical system to treat MSW, this study evaluates the combustible fraction of MSW to characterize the various combustible components and to identify the principal sources of elements that eventually may be objectionable from corrosive or environmental considerations. Several possible sources for cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc have been tentatively identified. These sources are pigments, inks, paper stock, and additives to plastics. A correlation between industry consumption values and measured concentrations in MSW was found for several elements.

Titanium is a well-known component of bauxite ores, sometimes occurring in sufficient quantity to mace its recovery worth considering. This question has been raised by some of the companies lixiviating bauxite ores. At the East St. Louis plant of the Aluminum Ore Co., a subsidiary of the Aluminum Co. of America, the waste sludge discharged daily contains over 75,000 pounds of Ti02. The sludge is all through 20-mesh, and a large proportion is slime. A supple of the waste was deslimed so that a gravity-concentration test of the "sand" could be made. The Aluminum Ore Co. cooperated in the work and made the chemical determinations In order to anticipate the results of table concentration a series of specific gravity fractions (float-and-sink) was made with heavy liquids. Acetylene tetrabromide was used for a density of 2.95, methylene iodide for 3.33, and thallium formate for 3.78, and the double salt of thallium formate-malonate made the separation at slimed sample appears in Table 1.

Develop an alternative to water bath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) for permissible diesel equipment used in gassy mines. Background Water scrubbers are a safety device used on diesel-powered vehicles in gassy mines. Exhaust from the engine passes through the scrubber, where it is cooled, and any flames or sparks present in the exhaust are extinguished. This prevents the ignition of combustible mine dust or methane that may be present. Unfortunately, water scrubbers consume large amounts of water and require frequent maintenance. Approach Methods that do not require water replenishment and frequent maintenance were investigated. The dry exhaust conditioning system was selected for investigation because no water is consumed and existing heat exchanger technology can be adapted to underground mine vehicles. In accordance with U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements, the system was designed to cool exhaust and trap flames and sparks. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed and evaluated a system for large engines and evaluated a second system for smaller engines. Both systems were evaluated on an engine test bed; if warranted, the system was then tested underground.

As a part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the United States. Published reports that set forth the pertinent facts of these operations help others to profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in Kentucky by the Cumberland Petroleum Co. on its L. C. Bailey lease, Oil Springs pool, Magoffin County, Ky. This is believed to be the first water-flooding project in eastern Kentucky (fig. 1).

"HISTORYThe origin of roof bolting as a means of roof support is obscure. During the past 23 years a method was developed by the. St. Joseph Lead Co: at its mines in southeastern Missouri, ranging from occasional use of single bolts with small bearing plates to systematic networks of bolts utilizing continuous bearing plates. Officials of this company are not certain which of its employees suggested their use. Many instances of occasional use of roof bolts have come to light during the past few years in widely separated mining districts, such as in West Virginia, Alabama, Illinois, Colorado, and Wyoming bituminous coal mines, and in Pennsylvania anthracite, Lake Superior iron, and Colorado lead-zinc mines. A few of the known installations have boon in place as long as 40 years.These installations usually were made to supplement wooden timbering in mine openings whore space was constricted, although it had been reported that roof bolting was started as a systematic moans of roof support in at least three instances but was abandoned because the cost of installation was excessive. The extra expense above that of conventional timbering could not be recaptured through economies resulting from increased efficiency, such as would be gained through mechanized mining.Roof bolting was first mentioned in mining literature in an article by W. W. Weige 3/ in Engineering and Mining Journal of May 1943, in which he described the use of bolts with 4-inch channel bearing plates in mines of the St. Joseph Load Co."

Gold continued to dominate mineral production in the group of volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, which comprise the British Commonwealth nation of Fiji. The Fijian mineral sector, however, remained of minor importance in terms of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment to the economy of the country, which was primarily agrarian with sugar as its mainstay. The Vatukoula gold-silver mine on the north side of the main island of Viti Levu remained the largest and most important mining operation, as well as Fiji&apos;s only operating metalliferous mine. In October, Western Mining Corp. (Fiji) Ltd. (WMCF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-registered Western Mining Corp. Holdings Ltd., increased its interest in the Vatukoula joint venture from 10% to 20% by exercising its option with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., also of Australia. The assumption of mine management operations at Vatukoula in 1983, with its attendant influx of additional capital and technological expertise, enabled WMCF to increase both efficiency and output at the mine during 1984. Higher output was obtained owing to an increase in underground ore production, which was partly offset by a reduction in opencut tonnage, as well as to modifications in the recovery circuit. Rate of recovery increased from about 15% to over 82% of the gold contained in the ore and from about 40% to 45% of the contained silver.

The Bureau of Mines examined explosion development in a closed spherical vessel, mathematically correlating flame travel, pressure, and time with parameters defining the reaction. The model assumes that burnt and unburnt zones are separated by a thin, radially moving flame front. Isothermal and adiabatic systems are considered. Correlation with gas and dust explosion data is better for the adiabatic system, but the isothermal development is simpler and in reasonably good agreement. Interpretation of the explosion phenomena is facilitated by expressing the rate of mole change in the flame front in terms of elementary parameters. This expression is developed by examining the components of spatial-flame velocity.

Use instantaneous sampling to pinpoint dust sources and to Improve dust control on longwalls. Approach Use a dust monitor developed under a Bureau contract. How It Works Sampling can be done by either a moving or a stationary method. In the "moving&apos; method, the dust monitor is carried by a survey engineer walking at the midpoint of the shearer Dust levels and face position (support number) are taken during all phases of the mining cycle while the shearer is cutting. These measurements can show how changes in airflow along the face, face specific; (rock partings) and cutting sequence (cutting the wedge) variables affect dust levels. In the "stationary sampling" method, the survey engineer stands with the RAM at a fixed location on the face. As the shearer approaches, the dust level and the distance to the shearer are recorded at 10-second intervals. Typically measurements start when the shearer is 20 feet from the sampling position and continue as the shearer passes the position until it is 20 feet away on the other side. Dust profiles around the machine are obtained at several fixed locations along the face only while the shearer is cutting.
