The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.

We have tested the ability of ground penetrating radar (GPR) to resolve adjacent mine workings. The work was conducted at two National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health locations – an underground coal mine and an underground limestone mine. The objective of our work was to determine if GPR signals could be received from distant mine workings. The GPR system was calibrated on underground mine pillars of known dimensions using a variety of antennas. The system was then tested at several underground locations in an effort to detect an adjacent drift entry; and an adjacent abandoned coal mine. As a means of verification, an in-seam horizontal hole was drilled from the active coal mine to the abandoned mine to confirm the presence and location of the abandoned mine workings. Our results show that in the case of the limestone mine the maximum depth of penetration where the mine workings could be resolved was 85 ft; and in the case of the coal mine the abandoned mine workings could be resolved at a depth of 205 ft. We conclude that it may be possible to utilize GPR for initial underground mine studies followed by directional drilling to accurately delineate the extent and position of adjacent abandoned mine workings.

Materials from phosphate rock mining and processing were analyzed for fluorine and uranium content as part of the Bureau of Mines program to more effectively recover resources from mining and mineral processing reject materials. The analysis of both feed and waste materials generated in the beneficiation and acidulation of phosphate rock was performed to obtain information on the disposition and concentration of these elements in phosphate rock processing streams. Fluorine was determined by a distillation-titration method and by ion chromatography. Uranium was determined by the dibenzoylmethane (DBM) method, the reliability being confirmed by roundrobin analysis of samples within Bureau of Mines research centers. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Standard Reference Material (SRM) 120b-Phosphate Rock was also analyzed for fluorine and uranium to verify procedures and results. Fluorine values ranged from 0.3 wt-pct in gypsum filter cake to 3.7 wt-pct in phosphate rock concentrate. Uranium ranged from less than 5 µg/g in gypsum filter cake to 200 µg/g in a dried clay slime.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove, grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 2 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The sections of this chapter and the area chapters in volume III contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

Heat content values were experimentally determined for yttrium metal between temperatures of 400° and 1,300° K and for iron pentacarbonyl between 301° and 380° K. The drop technique was used; that is, a sample of material sealed in a protective capsule was heated to 3 desired temperature in a furnace and then dropped into an ice calorimeter. A revised technique for determining heat content values from calorimetric data is described. Heat content and corresponding entropy-increment data above a reference temperature of 298.15° K are presented in tabular form. Equations for heat content and heat capacity as functions of temperature were derived for each substance. A Bureau of Mines geologic study of Pennsylvanian and Permian coalbeds in southwestern Pennsylvania was undertaken to determine the effects of coalbed geology and petrology on in situ coalbed gas contents. Data were obtained from 18 coreholes from parts of four 7.5 ' quadrangles in southwestern Washington and northwestern Greene Counties, and from a single corehole in Westmoreland County. A total of 88 samples from 24 coalbeds were collected for direct-method testing to determine gas content. The samples were also analyzed for petrographic composition, chemical composition, and vitrinite reflectance values. Corehole information was used to generate isopach maps and geologic cross sections useful in data interpretation. Results of the investigation show that coalbed gas content is related to vitrinite reflectance, but not to petrographic composition. Gas contents are also influenced by other geologic factors such as roof rock lithology and competency, and location with respect to local fold structure.

Information on oil and water production, volume of water injected, core analyses, and well completion data was collected on 28 Red Fork sand water-flood projects for comparison and evaluation of results. An average water injection efficiency of 35 percent, an average water-injected to oil-produced ratio of 16.8:1, and an average loss outside the flood pattern of approximately 45 percent of the injected fluid resulted in an oil recovery to January 1, 1969, of only 5.6 percent of the pore volume, or 9.1 percent of the initial stock-tank oil in place. The principal causes of poor oil recovery from these projects are the losses of large quantities of injection water from the flood patterns through oriented, natural fracture systems or zones of high permeability and excessive channeling of injection fluids from input wells to oil wells. For more efficient operation and a higher percentage of oil recovery from the Red Fork sand and other low-permeability-sand waterflood projects, directional orientation of both induced-and natural-fracture systems should be determined during early development. The success of a low-permeability-sand waterflood project depends to a large extent upon the orientation of the injection wells with the fracture system.

This Part describes a mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect sys tem that permits mine paging telephones to be selectively interconnected with the public telephone system, as illustrated by Figure 1. This interconnect concept was first conceived and demonstrated in breadboard form by H. E. Parkinson of Industrial Hazards and Communications, PMSRC, as one means for providing improved emergency and off-hours communications. The third-generation prototype unit described in this Part was designed and fabricated by Arthur D. Little, Inc. This unit is a small desk-top or wall-mounted unit that connects directly to both the public telephone line and the mine pager phone line, and requires no modifications to either the public dial telephone or mine pager phones. As part of this task, ADL also built, under a very compressed time schedule, a second-generation prototype unit suitable for reliable demonstration of the interconnect concept during the Bureau's technology transfer seminar on mine communications in March 1973. * A major objective of the design of the third-generation unit described in this Part was that it be compatible with present mine pager phone systems utilizing DC voltage on the mine phone line to activate the phone loudspeakers. Therefore, this unit was designed to operate in a push- to-talk, push-to-listen mode that accommodates the inherent design differences and operation modes of the mine phones of different manufacturers. Though this push- to- talk, push- to-listen mode of operation may seem slightly unusual at first sight, we have found it is easily learned by new users. However, mine phone manufacturers wishing to expand their product lines with such an interconnect system will probably find it to their advantage to customize the design of this system to their particular mine phones, thereby utilizing the unique attributes offered by their individual product lines. This customization should not be difficult, and Section III below suggests some of the features that can be easily added to future designs. Detailed parts lists and circuit schematics for the present third-generation proto- type system can be obtained from the system manual submitted to PMSRC and placed on public file.

This report deals with the efforts to develop a portable device suitable for underground use for the purpose of measuring the frequency of vibration of the horizontal chords of Birmingham roof trusses. Four devices are investigated and evaluated. An approximate emperical expression developed from a mathematical analysis provides a means of converting the frequency into tension. The method appears to be effective in mines with shale roof but requires some modification for other roofs.

After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has conducted semi-annual surveys to determine the changes in motor gasoline being sold in the United States. It was pointed out in the previous survey that there was an apparent tendency toward greater uniformity in the character of gasoline marketed in the United States. This practically uniform tendency which continued from April, 1917 to January, 1923, has been interrupted in the, present survey, as shown by an examination of the column marked "Difference," as given in Table 1. The figures in this table were obtained by averaging the end points of the least volatile and most volatile samples of gasoline. For example, of 850 samples analyzed in 1919, the 10% ,(85 samples) having the highest end points and the 10% having the lowest end points mere grouped, and the end points of each group averaged. These averages are represented in the table as the "Maximum 10%" and the ?Minimum 10%? respectively. The same process was used on the other surveys.

This chapter describes the adverse health effects associated with exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Epidemiological studies of underground and surface coal miners in the United States and other countries are discussed. Also discussed are animal studies that add to our understanding of particle deposition and retention in the lungs and associated disease responses. This chapter emphasizes studies that (1) were performed since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 [P.L. 91- 173], (2) used standardized methods of exposure monitoring and disease classification, and (3) investigated exposure-response relationships between respirable coal mine dust exposure and disease. Several published review articles contain further discussion of health effects studies of coal miners [Attfield and Wagner 1992b; Petsonk and Attfield 1994; Cotes and Steel 1987; Merchant et al. 1986; Morgan and Lapp 1976; Morgan 1975].

THE South Asian countries of India, Ceylon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim have a large variety of mineral resources; however, in spite of mineral industry growth during 1964, development of resources remained far short of possible development, and, in terms of value of trade in minerals, the area remained a sizeable net importer. India's mineral industry is by far the most significant; its minerals production in 1964 accounted for more than 90 per cent of the total value of all minerals produced in the area. The total value of all minerals produced in South Asia in 1964 was only about 1 percent of the area's estimated gross national product of $55,125 million. Despite the rather small current contribution of minerals to the economy, development of mineral resources figures prominently in plans for the industrial development of the nations of this area.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

Ferrous fractions recovered from urban refuse were tested by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to assess their character, composition, and response to detinning. This research was conducted as part of the Bureau's efforts to conserve mineral resources through recycling. Results from laboratory and pilot tests established the technical feasibility of detinning scrap recovered from household refuse. Detinned products containing less than 0.03 percent residual tin were produced. Concentrations of other residual elements were determined and compared with those in existing commercial scrap and with proposed specifications. Studies were extended to include evaluations under commercial conditions. Preliminary tests on 5-1/2 short tons of ferrous fractions revealed the need for adequate shredding to assure optimum metal-caustic contact and minimize retention of tin-bearing rinse solution in the final baled product. The washed metal product contained 0.06 percent residual tin. Subsequent melt tests showed a yield of 91.4 percent. Based on these studies, full-scale commercial demonstrations showed that detinned bales equivalent to No. 1 bundle quality could be produced in carload quantities. Up to 5 pounds of tin per gross ton of scrap is con-currently recovered during the detinning process.

A mineral survey of the 20,792-acre Sand Butte WSA (Wilderness study Area), ID-57-8, was conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel in 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is in Lincoln County, south-central Idaho, about 15 miles south-southeast of Carey. There are no mines, prospects, or claims within the WSA. Basaltic lava is the only rock type exposed within the WSA. The only mineral resource is a few tons of a platy variety of lava (slab pahoehoe) which is suitable for use as decorative stone. Similar slab pahoehoe, produced from other lava fields in southern Idaho, retails for approximately $125/ton. The deposit in the WSA is too small to be mined commercially but may have value to consumers who gather their own decorative stone. INTRODUCTION A mineral survey of the Sand Butte WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ was conducted in June 1985 by the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) and the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will he used to help determine the suitability of the WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. The immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data to the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions. The long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). The Bureau of Mines measured methane emission rates from an advancing salt face ranging from 15 to 56 ft3/ton (0.5 to 1.8 m3/t). Small room size, use of a continuous miner, and a well-defined ventilation system made possible air velocity and methane concentration measurements, These measurements, representing data from 18 production days, were con- ducted in an area of abnormally low grade salt, Methane emissions occurred primarily during the advance of the salt face by continuous miner.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation into the occurrence of outbursts of salt known to be responsible for explosions, fatalities, and damage in domal salt mines. The purpose of the investigation was to develop a basis for predicting these outbursts based on geologic and associated physical properties of salt. The investigation was conducted at the Cote Blanche salt mine in southern Louisiana. Because outbursts are the primary mode of methane emission into the mine, more than 80 outbursts, ranging in size from 1 to 50 ft in diameter have been mapped. These outbursts generally are aligned and elongate parallel to the direction of salt layering. More than 200 salt samples, both random and selected, were tested for methane content. It was found that outburst zones are well correlated with high methane content. Detailed mapping also revealed that the zones are well defined, with salt crystal size abruptly increasing upon entry into the zone. The intensity of folding and kinking of the salt layering within the outburst zone also appears to increase. An interbedded sand layer occurring throughout the mine does not appear to be a significant source of methane. However, fine-grained salt may be related to outburst occurrence.
