The Deep River coal field is in Chatham, Lee, and Moore Counties, N. C. The coal-bearing part of the basin is about 35 miles long and 5 to 10 miles wide. Sanford, the county seat of Lee County, is the largest town in the area, with a population of 10,000. Four railroads provide transportation to the area, and four United States highways and improved county roads provide easy access to the field. The Carolina mine at Farmville is the only operating mine in the field. The mine was opened in 1921 by two rock slopes driven from the surface to the Cumnock bed. Mining operations continued intermittently until 1945 and then stopped. In the fall of 1947 the mine was reopened by the newly organized Raleigh Mining Corp.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Australia was one of the world's principal producers of minerals and metals, and its minerals industry was a leading catalyst in promoting growth of the country. Australia was the world's largest producer of alumina, bauxite, diamond, ilmenite, monazite, opal, rutile, sapphire, and zircon. It was the premier exporter of alumina, coal, ilmenite, refined lead, monazite, rutile, and zircon, and was the second leading exporter of iron ore, after Brazil. Ranking behind China, the United States, the U.S.S.R., the German Democratic Republic, Poland, and the Federal Re-public of Germany, Australia was the seventh largest producer of coal (all grades) in the world. Australia was the fourth largest gold producer in 1988, after the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and the United States. It was the second largest producer of zinc, the third largest producer of nickel, the fourth largest producer of uranium, and the seventh largest producer of copper. 2 The country's mineral wealth was so extraordinary that it was virtually self-sufficient in most mineral commodities. Endowed with abundant resources of coal, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and uranium, Australia was one of the few market economy countries that was a net exporter of mineral fuels. About 90% of Australia's consumption of crude oil was supplied by domestic production; this was expected to decline significantly about 1990, unless significant new oilfields were discovered.

The attention of operators of oil-producing properties long has been directed toward methods of' disposing of petroleum wastes as well as the disposal of oil-field brines. The problem of disposing of' petroleum wastes is not easy to solve, and although many operators are to be commended for the efforts they have made, much work remains to be done before the problem can be considered solved. Petroleum wastes include emulsions of petroleum and brine or mixtures of petroleum and sand that cannot be "broken down" or treated economically by known methods of separating petroleum from deleterious matter; crude petroleum that escapes from pipe lines, fittings, and tanks because of holes in the lines, leaky connections, or some accident; and oil-saturated materials that accumulate accidentally or otherwise an the normal operation of an oil-producing property.

The report gives a review of the methods of predicting mine subsidence; these methods are used particularly in European coalfields. The methods are subdivided into two groups, based on mathematical expressions either for the trough profile or for the influence of infinitesimal extraction elements. The fundamental relationships common to all methods described herein are the principles of superposition and of equivalent extraction areas. The involved parameters are derived from field observations. For calculating horizontal displacements, their relation to the slope of the subsidence profile is applied. The time-dependent development of the subsidence process is characterized by the empirical "time factor." Modifications for the case of inclined strata are considered. A brief review of experimental and theoretical model investigations is given.

Originally developed for use in coal mines where on-shift blasting with explosives was prohibited, compressed-air blasting has been used for the past 15 years as a substitute for fixed explosives. With the current commercially available compressed-air systems -Airdox and Armstrong -coal is dislodged by a high-pressure discharge of air from a pressurized shell placed in the coal borehole. In the original systems stationary compressors were mounted on the surface or in the underground ventilated areas. These proved so successful that a mobile compressor unit was developed for use at the working face. Because of the possibility that such a unit might operate in a gassy atmosphere, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the hazards associated with operation under conditions where firedamp could accumulate in explosive concentrations. A brief résumé follows of activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code fur Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous -coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reportin; to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Minis Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority under Executive Order 9728 was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

"Following passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 911173), the Bureau of Mines initiated a research program aimed at controlling respirable dust exposures of coal mine workers. Respirable dust is the dust that gets into, and interacts with, the lungs of those who inhale it. It has long been recognized as a severe health hazard to mine workers. This program has been implemented by a team effort consisting of the Bureau's in-house capabilities, the Generic Center for Respirable Dust, and contractors, as necessary. Over the years, Bureau research has addressed principally three areas:o Compliance with the Federal 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard (1970-76).o Dust control for longwall mining (1976-1983).o More stringent respirable dust standards due to quartz dust (1983-1987).In addition, fundamental studies have been conducted by the Generic Center for Respirable Dust, with emphasis on penetration of dust into the lung. Accomplishments have been significant, but problems remain, as noted later.The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, established a 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard for all coal mining operations, underground as well as surface. At the time of enactment of this legislation, the industry was averaging approximately 4.0 mg/m3. The Bureau of Mines respirable dust research program played a significant role in identifying and developing effective technology to allow better compliance with this new standard, thanks to industry implementation and Federal enforcement."

"SUMMARY This mine, which was discovered in 1846, was active in the 1850's, in the 1870's, and again in 1883. Since this last date, it has been idle. Two parallel bed-veins in lower Silurian limestone, about 50 feet apart, strike N. 70° E. and dip 70° NW. The north vein had an average width of 12 feet to a depth of 50 feet, where it was barren. The south vein had an average width of 16 feet to a depth of 75 feet; on the 110-foot level, although well-defined it carried little or no values. The zinc content of the ore was as high as 12 percent, and some lead and silver were associated with it. A reduction plant for production of spelter and zinc oxide was constructed at the mine. The only available record of production is for 1873 to 1876, inclusive, when 357 tons of smelter was shipped. The mine is caved and inaccessible, and nothing now remains of the treatment plant.Four holes totaling 1,046 feet wore diamond-drilled to probe for extensions of the ore in depth. Core recovery was about 85 percent. No samples were taken for analysis.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The policy of the Bureau is to publish the facts devel¬oped by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, does the actual investigative work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Oliver C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and makes beneficiation tests.The deposit was examined in 1944 by C. B. White, mining engineer of the Bureau of Minos. Diamond-drilling was under the immediate supervision of McHenry Mosier. 2/ The diamond-drill cores were logged by Arnold Brokaw, geologist, Federal Geological Survey, and 'wore filed in the core library of the Bureau of Mines, Mount Weather, Va."

More than 50,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and probably about the same quantity of anthracite are cleaned annually in the United States by wet methods. The water, fine coal, and impurities from the water used for washing ordinarily are recovered by moans of various forms of settling tanks. Settling and clarification may be hastened markedly, thereby greatly increasing the capacity of clarification equipment already installed, by the addition of substances to the washery water that cause the fine particles in suspension to agglomerate and thus settle more rapidly. This phenomenon, although well known and applied in other fields, has been used at only a few coal washeries in the United States. It is widely employed, however, as an aid in the recovery or disposal of fine coal or impurities, as a means of preventing, stream pollution, and to enable reuse of washery water at many plants in Europe. Pioneering work in the United States has been done principally by two companies -- the Pittsburgh Coal Co., in Pennsylvania, 6/ and the Pacific Coast Coal Co., in Washington.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds from which samples could be obtained in Upshur County, W. Va. One of the 14 samples collected was of metallurgical quality as received, 6 could be sufficiently upgraded to provide acceptable products, and 7 could not be upgraded to metallurgical quality because of their high sulfur contents.

"INTRODUCTION During the war period the Bureau of Mines expanded its investigations on western coals principally in connection with Investigations of raw material resources for western steel production. Owing to the expansion of the steel industry, there was some concern regarding the availability of suitable coking coals; end because of the potential steel shortage, the production of sponge iron, using the lower-rank fuels, was considered. Work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines on exploration projects and on testing of coals both at the Central Experiment. Station at Pittsburgh, Pa., and at the Bureau of Mines Station at Golden, Cole.The results of these investigations are being published by the Bureau in several reports of investigations and technical papers. In making this resume of coal investigations, the work done by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh in the Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections will be discussed and the investigations at Golden described in greater detail.INVESTIGATIONS OF WESTERN COALSThe Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections of the Coal Division, Bureau of Mines, under the supervision of A. L. Teeny es and J. D. Davis, respec¬tively, conducted many field investigations to locate and evaluate new sources of coking coals. Drilling explorations were made in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Washington and revealed two important new reserves of coking coal. The first one studied was the Willow Creek bed at Kemmerer, Wyo., which was reported in 1945.3/ A recoverable reserve estimated at 11,200,000 tons was blocked out, and samples of coal were extracted for coking tests. The coking properties of the coal were not quite equal to those of Sunnyside coal, but it was indicated that a 50-percent blend of the Willow Creek with Lower Sunnyside will produce a satisfactory metallurgical coke based on Columbia steel standards."

This Bureau of Mines publication presents short-range projections of domestic liquid hydrocarbon production through 1980. Appraisal of future crude oil production was made by evaluating the relationship between primary and enhanced oil recovery and the total crude oil producing trends in each of the oil-producing areas of the United States. Future natural gas liquid production was generally estimated by projecting historical production. Estimates of production were prepared for each of the oil producing areas and summarized for the Petroleum Administration for Defense (PAD) districts and total United States. From 1975 to 1980, crude oil production for the conterminous United States is expected to decline from 7.8 to 6.4 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD), and it is expected to increase from 8.0 to 8.2 million BOPD for the total United States. However, these estimates do not include additional production expected from the Elk Hills field in California and the Yates field in Texas. If included, 1980 production for the conterminous United States would be 6.7 million BOPD and 8.4 million BOPD for the total United States.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of gamma radiation on reactions between Pennsylvania anthracite and fluorine and chlorine. In the tests with fluorine about 90 percent of the coal reacted at 350° C to form volatile products whether or not irradiation was employed. Up to 0.8 ml of liquid products per gram of anthracite was collected. Among the 25 com-pounds indicated by gas chromatography, fluoroform and l,l-difluoroethylene were tentatively identified from their relative retention times and perfluoro-cyclopentane from its infrared spectrum. In addition, a clear, hard, wax, probably a fluorocarbon, was formed at 45° C in both the presence and absence of radiation. With chlorine there was no significant difference due to radiation, and preliminary tests indicated that the chlorine reacted more with the organic matter of anthracite at 200° C than with inorganic matter. At 400° C the results were inconclusive because of excessive corrosion in the reaction vessel.

This report presents the final data from a 5-yr Bureau of Mines study designed to determine the surface subsidence characteristics resulting from longwall coal mining in a geologic environment common to the Western United States, It includes a description of the geologic setting of the study site, the mine plan, measurement techniques, and results of the monitoring program. Measured subsidence values were obtained over four adjacent longwall panels- Major subsidence characteristics such as longitudinal and transverse profiles, angles of draw, time-related subsidence development, and critical width are discussed. The maxima subsidence value of 5.8 ft was 68 pct of the mining thickness. The average angle of draw was 30°, Subsidence at the center of the first panel continued for 46 months following undermining. The lengths of the longwall panels precluded a definitive determination of the critical width and maximum possible subsidence.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they arc required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by G. E . Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

Economy in blast-furnace practice depends largely upon efficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of the furnace. If efficient work is not done in the shaft the hearth and bosh will not function properly. A condition may be readily imagined where the particles of ore in the shaft are so large that the time entailed in the descent of these materials into the bosh is not sufficient to permit proper reduction and preparation prior to the time the ore enters the bosh of the furnace. Another condition may be pictured where the density of the stock column and the flow of stock is such that the ore will take one course and the gas another. Both of these examples will result in insufficient contact between the gas and the ore. Unreduced ore will reach the hearth, and gas which has not been efficiently oxidized will reach the stock line. The result is the use of an excess of carbon in the smelting process. An example of the result of inefficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of a blast furnace is shown by the curves in Figure 1.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils of California is one of a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes a short discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of California crudes. Analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties have been published in Serials 25952 and 26083. The analyses reported in this paper corer samples that were obtained subsequent to the publication of Serials 2535 and 2608. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

[The motor gasoline that s being marketed in the United States this summer slightly more volatile then that sold a year ago. This increase in volatility is shown by a general lowering ref the average distillation rang, of about 2°F. During the post 10 years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the twentieth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have beer chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.]
