To determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback, diesel-fuel fire experiments were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s Safety Research Coal Mine. Such information is necessary for preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 to 300 kW depending on the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2-m- (6.6-ft-) high, 2.9-m- (9.5-ft-) wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment. The airflow was measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor and was recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light-obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics fire dynamics simulator.

Exposure to vibration induced in and around underground mine’s exploration is a major concern to vehicles operators. Most of these drivers over time develop serious spinal musculoskeletal and discs problems causing low back injuries. The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance and dynamic response of driver/operator when subjected to different levels of vibration due to rough road conditions depicted in a mine field. The second purpose of the paper is to quantify the energy transmission in the presence of seat padding with special characteristics and active suspension. Using experimental testing data collected at NIOSH/PRL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/ Pittsburgh Research Laboratory) along with model simulation algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago we investigated how acceleration transfer functions as well as absorbed power affects the different parts of the body. To this end, we used a previously validated human model which includes the head, torso segments and legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experimental data at the UIC Vehicle Technology Laboratory. The absorbed power and energy transmitted to the body are used as an index measure to assess the viability of the different seat padding’s and active seat suspension control strategies.

Whole body vibration is known to affect movement accuracy [1], however little is known about changes in the organization of movement and movement strategies used to limit the influences of perturbations. The specific aim of this work is to analyze the motion and coordination of upper body segments of seated operators performing reaching tasks under whole-body sinusoidal vibration exposure and simulated vehicle ride motion. The long-term objective is to model reach coordination and predict the dynamic behavior of the upper body motion under vehicle vibration exposure. Method The reach task consisted of pointing with the right hand index finger to targets located on touch screens placed in front of the subject, 45° overhead and 90° to the right in the mockup cabin of an HMMWV placed on a 6 DOF ride motion simulator. The task was performed under stable (no vibration) and vibration (sinusoidal vibration or simulated ride motion) conditions. A motion capture system was used to record kinematic data of reflective markers to recreate body link trajectories. Joint angles (torso, shoulder and elbow; Figure 1) were then computed using quaternions. Coordination between body links was defined as a) the joints angle-versus-angle relationships between the upper arm and lower arm, and b) the joint motion onset relationships between torso, upper arm and lower arm in the time domain. Results Angle–versus-angle relationships. The relationship between upper arm vs. lower arm angle and torso vs. upper arm angle for a far forward reaching movement in the stable (solid lines) and vibration conditions (dotted lines) are illustrated in Figure 2. Fig 2A compares the control condition with a 4 Hz lateral vibration while Fig 2B compares the control condition with a 6 Hz vertical vibration. It appears that under vibration exposure the reduced upper arm extension is compensated by an increase in torso flexion. This effect is seen in the last phase of the movements (encircled areas). In addition, the lower arm extension is delayed under 6 Hz vertical vibration (Fig 2B left panel). Time of joint motion onset. The timing relationship between torso, upper arm and lower arm is largely a function of the target to be reached. Examples of delays between body links are illustrated in Figure 3. This paper, prepared under the direct supervision of Paul T. Alisman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon ore such technique.The Wright borehole-surveying instrument developed at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., has been described in several publications. 3/ For the benefit of those to whom the publications are not available, the instrument is described here. However, this article will be concerned mainly with the technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for using the instrument.In the use of the Wright borehole-surveying instrument, it was found advantageous to develop a standard practice of operation covering type of film, preparation and care of film, loading film in instrument, placing instrument in container, exposure time, unloading film from instrument, development of film, and determination of dip and strike from film impressions."

Air recirculation caused by dust scrubbers at coal mine working faces was examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines with regard to the potential hazards caused by a possible buildup of methane gas. A theoretical analysis indicated that there was no apriori way to predict the effect of scrubber recirculation on methane concentration levels. Experiments conducted in a full-scale model of a working face area indicated that methane levels were dependent to a great extent on the location of the scrubber exhaust, but that the scrubber recirculation did not substantially increase the methane concentration above those levels that would have prevailed were the scrubber not in operation. An analysis of two underground scrubber trials showed that the scrubbers had no significant effect on methane levels, and a review of explosions attributed to recirculation showed that these were characterized by a lack of fresh air as well as recirculation. It was concluded that high methane levels are due more to a lack of fresh air than to recirculation.

Acute vibration causes vasoconstriction in naïve human subjects1. Vibration-induced decrease in skin perfusion has also been reported in the rat-tail vibration model 2. After vibration exposure, rat-tail arteries demonstrate vacuoles in smooth muscle cells, similar to that caused by pharmacological vasoconstrictors3. This study addressed the effects of different frequencies, durations and patterns of vibration on lumen size and vacuole formation using the rat-tail vibration model in male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g). Methods The different groups were: 4-hr continuous vibration at 30, 60, 120 and 800 Hz; continuous exposure durations of 5 min, 1 hr and 4 hr at 60 Hz; and 4-hr cumulative exposure of 60 Hz delivered intermittently in cycles of 10 min on and 5 min off. Acceleration was set at 49 m/s2 r.m.s. for all frequencies. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage driven by a B&K motor (4809). The sham control animals were also placed in the vibration apparatus but not vibrated. Room temperature was controlled at 25 ± 1°C. Ventral arteries from proximal tail segments 7 were immersion fixed in aldehydes, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned (0.5 µm) for morphological analysis. Vascular lumen sizes were measured as the percent ratio of the lumen perimeter to internal elastic membrane length using Image J software (NIH). The number of vacuoles in the smooth muscle layer of each artery section was counted. Results Fig 1: Semithin sections of arteries. A. Sham control. B. 4-hr vibration 60 Hz. Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1989 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. Among the most significant minerals to be produced in Africa were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, chromite, coal, cobalt, copper, diamond, fluorspar, gold, lithium minerals, manganese, phosphate, platinum-group metals, and the titanium minerals-ilmenite and rutile, vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Despite the underdevelopment of much of Africa, mineral raw materials played a very important part of the national economies of many of its countries. In terms of percent-age of export earnings, minerals accounted for more than 90% in some cases. In several countries with agrarian economies and little economic diversification such as Angola and Guinea, a single mining operation could represent an important source of foreign exchange. These latter operations tended to be the more easily mined surface deposits of diamond, gem stones, and precious metals. Mineral commodities for which Africa had a high percentage of world output were bauxite, 16%; chromite, 44.5%; cobalt, 76.5%; copper, 13.9%; diamond, 50.7%; gold, 32.9%; manganese, 27.1 %; phosphate, 22.1 %; platinum-group metals, 48%; uranium, 29.2%; vanadium, 54%; and vermiculite, 41 %. Several of these, chromite, cobalt, diamond, and manganese, were not produced in the United States.

This report is based on data collected in and about the Liberty mine of the Liberty Fuel Co. by D. J. Parker and W. W. Kessler on December 13 and 14, 1933. An important phase of an examination to determine the general condition of a mine with respect to safety is the collection of dust samples from rock- dusted areas. Definite conclusions, based on intelligent interpretation of the analyses of such samples, can be reached only when the general condition of the mine is known. A similar examination and report were made on this property in January 1930 by D. J. Parker and R. I. C. Manning. Since that time much has been done by the management to improve safety conditions in this mine. The changes made will be noted in the course of this report. The mine is in Spring Canyon at Latuda, Carbon County, Utah, and is served by a branch line of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad about 7 miles long and connecting to the main line near Helper, Utah. The writer desires to express his sincere appreciation for the many courtesies and helpful cooperation extended by Superintendent George Schultz and Mine Foreman F. W. Koelling.

Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

On the basis of world production data alone, 1985 appears to have been a year in which the world's mineral industry took another step upward in its recovery from the very poor years of 1981, 1982, and early 1983. Despite a drop in the output of crude oil, which was the single most significant crude mineral product from the viewpoint of value, the estimated value of world crude mineral production advanced by 3.4% to about $1,054 billion constant 1983 dollars, with output increases logged for nearly two-thirds of the commodities and forms of commodities for which the U.S. Bureau of Mines calculates a total world output. However, the economic well-being of any industry or group of industries cannot be measured solely in terms of the volume and/or value of its production, and examination of statistics reflecting other aspects of mineral industry performance shows that 1985 was a less than ideal year in many respects. In the case of consumption of mineral commodities, although there were gains registered in diverse sectors such as iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizer materials, solid fuels, and gaseous fuels, there were also proportionally small but notable declines in use among the older major nonferrous metals (copper, lead, tin, and zinc) and in the all-important liquid fuels. In the case of international trade in mineral commodities, although comprehensive data for 1985 were not yet available, there were indications that the value may well have fallen below the estimated 1984 level of $632 billion, although the volume may have increased slightly. This, if true, would be chiefly the result of declining prices of mineral commodities, and indeed, price declines were noted for a number of significant materials in terms of current dollars, and even more would register declines if calculated on the basis of constant dollars, adjusting for inflation.

A large number of organizations interested in the search for mineral deposits have adopted the magnetic method of geophysical prospecting, as it has proved to be the most simple, convenient, and rapid, and at the same time the least expensive in comparison with other methods. According to the last statistical data, about two millions square kilo¬ meters were explored in the United States by different geophysical methods. Ninety-six per cent of this area was prospected for oil and 4 per cent for minerals. Detailed exploration by means of the magnetometer has been carried out over about 85 per cent of this surface. The great advantages offered by this method resulted in the fact that the magnetometer was tried out in most places in which geophysical methods were applied. The main purpose of such e:rploration is to obtain the maximum knowledge valuable to the geologist; therefore good geological interpretation of the results of measurements is important. The possibility of drawing practical conclusions from a map representing the results of the study of the terrane depends greatly on the accuracy with which the measurements are made. The purpose of this article is to show the different sources of error by which the work of an operator may be affected and to discuss the means by which the carrying out of a magnetic survey may be improved.

The Australian underground coal mining industry has made extensive use of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) classification system for a diverse range of purposes in recent years. These include mining method selection, and coal pillar and roof support design. This paper outlines a series of case histories, from large-scale feasibility studies to local support design investigations, that collectively illustrate the broad applicability, advantages, and usefulness of the methodology, as well as some of the current limitations. The key role of the CMRR in an overall hazard definition methodology is demonstrated for a major Australian project, and some ideas with regard to the future application of the CMRR, in the context of geotechnical risk management within a progressive, highly productive extractive industry, are put forward.

Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

Volume IV of the final report examines the problem of indirect contact of overhead high-voltage power lines by mining personnel. This refers to the contact of energized lines by workers through some intermediate conductor such as a metallic tool or a piece of high-reaching mobile equipment, thus the term "indirect contact." The shock hazard presented by such contact has been a major cause of electrical fatalities associated with mining operations. The report volume is divided into three major areas. The first gives a general background of overhead lines, basic characteristics, and associated hazards, and continues to describe presently used techniques and devices which attempt to alleviate the contact problem. The second area narrows the discussion to the mining industry by presenting a detailed analysis of 39 overhead-line contact accidents in mining since 1970. The third major section uses the information from the first two areas to formulate recommendations to prevent these accidents and subsequent electrocutions at mining operations.

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. An investigation was conducted of current mined-land planning practices to aid in the development of a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials. This investigation considered both the industry and public planning approach to mined-land planning. It included a detailed review of the impact of regulation, factors that determine land use, and current site planning methods employed by the mining industry. The methods of this investigation included three in-depth case studies of surface mines in the eastern, central, and western United States. A site planning pro-cess has been developed and applied to the surface mine case studies to evaluate the economic, environmental and social impacts of postmining land use alternatives. In add it ion, guidelines are proposed to enhance the cooperation between local land use planners and surface mine planners, as well as to improve comprehensive planning with regard to mineral resources at the local and regional level.

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China&apos;s overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

"During the last eight years there has been a noticeable increase in the use of permissible equipment in gassy and dusty coal mines. This trend has undoubtedly been toward greater safety in mining, but in spite of this all is not well ""along the front.""In many mines those in charge, either through ignorance or supposed economy, have neglected to install sufficient copper and maintain good bonding on the rails used for return circuits to have a safe working voltage for the permissible equipment which is intended to afford them safety.Low voltage, when properly analyzed, is not economy but frequently is an expensive oversight. Burned-out armatures, controllers, rheostats, and switches are costly in themselves to repair or replace, but the greatest cost in many instances is the loss of production resulting from idle and broken-down equipment.From a safety standpoint, excessive low voltage where permissible equipment is necessary is almost criminal negligence. A burn-out of any kind is liable to cause an arc that may burn its way through a casing wall and bring about a hazardous condition if gas or dust in explosive proportions should be present. Again, all wiring, both interior and exterior to the apparatus, is subject to the extra heating consequent upon low voltage. It should be remembered that if the voltage drops the current must increase a corresponding amount in order that the same work may be accomplished; and as the heating effect is as the square of the current, an enormous overheating of the electrical parts and wiring often takes place. This heating effect is especially detrimental to trailing cables used on portable equipment, because under the most favorable conditions the size of cable selected is only barely sufficient to do its work properly at a safe working temperature; therefore, when the extra current load is added because of poor voltage, overheating is sure to result, with consequent deterioration of the insulation, This effect greatly increases the liability of cable failures in service, and in turn adds to the hazards incident to the use of portable equipment of the permissible type involving the use of trailing cables.Some manufacturers have tried -to protect their equipment from low voltage, especially below a certain point, by -installing low-voltage relays which will trip when the voltage falls to a predetermined value. It is understood that some operators have hesitated or refused to install such low-voltage protection because they were aware that the voltage conditions were so poor that the equipment could not operate under the safe limits set. It is difficult to understand how any progressive company that is willing to go to the ex-pense of installing permissible equipment could be so shortsighted in this phase of common sense, safety, and economy."

A flotation procedure was devised by the Federal Bureau of Mines for beneficiating Mount Wheeler, Nev., beryllium ores that contain the beryllium minerals bertrandite and phenacite in a complex association with calcite, fluorspar, mica, quartz, and other accessory minerals, The method also has proven to be effective in trials on ore from the Lake George, Colo., area. Samples used in most of the research ranged from 0.49 to 0.73 percent BeO. Beryllium mineralization varied from two-thirds bertrandite to all phenacite. An unusually high grade sample containing 5 percent BeO as phenacite was floated on a batch basis to prepare concentrate for utilization studies. The beryllium minerals were floated from undeslimed pulps at natural pH using sodium fluoride and sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP), as modifiers, and a fatty acid-fuel oil combination as the collector. Key factors were the use of a minimum of about 4 pounds of sodium fluoride and between 2 and 4 pounds of HMP per ton of ore. Efficacy of the HMP was related to the grind, mineralogical composition, corollary reagents, and type and time of conditioning. Addition of the fluoride, HMP, and collector in that order, followed by appropriate conditioning after each addition, was essential for satisfactory flotation.
