An exhaustive program of geologic studies and mapping has been conducted by the Geological Survey in the Iron River district of Michigan since May 1943. Means of contributing to the success of these studies were sought by the Bureau of Mines, and eventually a program involving geophysical studies and core-drilling was undertaken in the area. All of the work was done either to develop data that would contribute directly to geologic studies or to investigate geophysical methods that might be used as a primary means for the discovery of minable iron ore.

Possible consequences of continuing internal political unrest and the imposition of foreign sanctions raise concerns about the traditional reliability of the Republic of South Africa as a major world supplier of important minerals. A recent Bureau of Mines' technical report (Open File Report 76-86) examined the impacts of temporary peacetime disruption scenarios for six key materials and mitigating options. Because of South Africa's dominant producer position for these minerals (except for cobalt), expansion of primary production capacity outside of South Africa is not a short term mitigative option. However, prospects of a longer term disruption would likely spur investment in capacity expansion in alternative Market Economy Country supply sources. This report identifies the resources, production costs, and burdens that would be placed on alternative MEC producers of chromium, cobalt, gold, manganese, and platinum-group minerals if South Africa's production were subject to a long term; disruption. When long term supplies from South African deposits are discounted, more than a few years reserves were found only for cobalt and manganese. Even for these two minerals, higher sustained prices would be required to increase manganese production capacity and to support means of cobalt transportation not through South Africa.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. "INTRODUCTION .Very little information regarding coal mining in Spain has been published in the American technical press, and few people realize the extent of this industry or the conditions under which coal is mined. The information in this publication was collected in 1945 and consists of personal observations in Spain, statistics, and other data of a, general nature obtained from official sources.Spain produces bituminous coal, lignite and anthracite, but the total tonnage mined is less than the national requirements. Before the war, an appreciable tonnages coal was imported from Great Britain under the Anglo-Spanish treaty, which rebated import duties and effectually prevented competition from any other foreign source. The war stopped the major part of the important of British coal and caused rapid expansion of the domestic sources, but this was not sufficient to supply the industrial demand. Coal that formerly was not acceptable to industry because of quality is now mined and marketed. The Government, allocates the better-grade bituininous coal to the various industries in accordance with the national importance of the work in which they are engaged; for example, the railroads are allotted 100 percent of their requirements, but cement companies can obtain only 25 percent.The Government offered to inducements to increase the production of coal of any class, but the larger part of the increased tonnage obtained was in inferior grades; as a result, the lignite production was taxed, while a bonus was paid for bituminous-coal production in excess of the 1942 tonnage.The anthracite and bituminous-coal areas were severely damaged during the Civil War and many experienced miners migrated to the lignite mines in eastern Spain. This has resulted in an acute shortage, particularly the Province of Oviedo where the most important bituminous-coal deposits are located."

"INTRODUCTION During the period from September 18 to November 27, 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and exploratory churn-drilling program in an area immediately north of the Crow Branch Diggings, a district lying approximately 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Livingston in Grant County, Wisconsin.The work was undertaken as part of a general Bureau of Mines investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war prrgram.Although no mining has been done in the district in recent years the Crow Branch Diggings were an important source of galena and may be found today in the dumps remaining from old surface-mining operations.The Bureau of Mines undertook an exploratory churn-drilling program on the northwestern projection of the general strike of the digging in a zone where subsurface,lead and zinc mineralization had been reported from drilling done in the early 1900's."

An essentially chemical technique has been developed on a small scale for the efficient utilization of certain domestic titaniferous iron ores. Three main steps are involved: (1) Sintering the ore at 1,050° C. with carbon and soda ash to reduce the iron to metal powder, retaining the titania in the slag, (2) separating the powdered iron from the slag, after wet grinding, by magnetic or gravity methods, and (3) sulfuric-acid decomposition of the titania fraction to produce pigment and certain byproducts. The technique was first applied to the tailings from the Bureau of Mines bauxite-concentrating plant at Bauxite, Ark. A good grade of powdered iron was produced from this material. Subsequently, the work was diverted to the study of the titaniferous magnetite from the MacIntyre Mine at Tahawus, N.Y., because of the potentially higher recoveries of iron, titanium and vanadium. Ninety percent of the iron in this ore has been recovered as an iron powder analyzing 90 percent metallic iron and containing 2 to 3 percent TiO2. The remaining titania was found in the slag and was recovered as pigment-grade TiO2 by application of a suitable technique. The vanadium was distributed between the TiO2 fraction and the alkaline liquor resulting from the wet-grinding and magnetic-separation operations, with only a minor proportion retained by the metallic iron.

Active placer mining in Alaska began near Juneau in 1880, but the first gold rush did not start until 1896; then the discovery of the Klondike brought gold seekers from all parts of the world. A few of the newcomers were experienced miners, but the majority knew nothing whatever of placer mining. Even those who were placer miners of much experience found entirely new conditions, notably frozen ground, that presented many difficult problems. As a result, numerous methods of mining and of thawing frozen ground were tried. From these trials the practice described in this bulletin has been developed. All known placer fields in Alaska have been mined to some extent, and some have been virtually exhausted. In most districts, however, there remain large quantities of low-grade gravel and also some small isolated areas of comparatively rich gravels which could not be successfully mined because of adverse physical conditions. These districts are now the scene of most placer mining, including dredging, hydraulicking, drifting, mechanical methods of open-cut mining, and ground sluicing (or booming) followed by " shoveling-in."

During the fiscal year 1938-39, 30 projects were completed. The requests for this service are based upon the desire of the sponsor to obtain the best or most satisfactory method for maximum recovery of the minerals. In many instances it is a question of improving present milling practice, with due regard to utilization of present equipment. In others, the probable tonnage available maybe the deciding factor in the choice of a particular recovery method. Under all circumstances the results of tests axe prepared with the thought of aiding a competent metallurgist, familiar with local conditions, to formulate a practical flow sheet or to assist the mill operator to correct known losses. A microscopic examination for identification of the mineral constituents and their association in each ore is always a big help, in planning the tests and may indicate the reason for former troubles or assist with best procedure.

Research on the development of new and improved methods for the discovery and production of oil and gas and production of fluid fuels from coal continued to be the major thrust of the Bureau of Mines energy research program during 1973. Crude oil recovery from tar sands and oil shale also retained a high priority in this work. Complementing this program were numerous studies aimed at accomplishing the objective of increased energy output with greater safety and minimum harm to the natural environment. This report summarizes research objectives and results and itemizes formal publications of the Bureau of Mines on energy and related subjects.

This report contains the findings of a study to perform a task and skill analysis of roof-bolting operations, with respect to the operational training requirements and to prepare detailed recommendations for the operational training system. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting underground coal mines, interviewing training and safety personnel, observing and interviewing roof-bolter operators, and reviewing present training programs and facilities. In conjunction with the mine visits an extensive literature search was conducted with emphasis on training, mine safety, and accidents involving the roof-bolting operation and roof-bolter operators. A number of training programs and training devices were considered resulting in the development of a recommended training program including training devices to be used and establishing training objectives.

ASBESTOS is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. As indicated in a later section devoted to a detailed discussion of the early history of asbestos, the tern may be defined as a. fibrous form of serpentine or amphibole. It does not include fibrous forms of other minerals, such as wollastonite, nemalite (fibrous brucite), or the fibrous forms of calcite or gypsum. A material that has the characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn is unique. Because it combines these qualities with other advantageous properties, asbestos has specialized uses for which no substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products and their manufacture constitutes a vast industry. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products. The value of such commodities manufactured in 1952 exceeded $332 million. They are not only of vast importance to budding construction and industry but axe absolutely, essential to certain important fields of use, for example, steam packings and friction materials, such as brake-band linings on automobiles.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration and distribution of precious metals in the various fractions produced from mechanical processing of obsolete military electronic scrap. Whole avionic units, printed circuit cards, and electrical connectors were processed and analyzed. Materials recovered included baghouse lights, wire bundles, mag-netics, and metal concentrates from eddy-current and high-tension sepa-ration. Higher value fractions were processed by a commercial toll refiner for recovery of gold and silver. Lower value fractions were analyzed by the Bureau. Three fractions, the lights, wire bundles, and metallics from high-tension separation, contained most of the precious metals. Depending on the type of scrap feed, these fractions represented 34 to 60 pct of the original sample weight. Collectively, they represented 68 to 97 pct and 75 to 98 pct of the contained gold and silver, respectively.

The metallurgy of manganese has developed along the lines of iron metal¬ lurgy. Enough high-grade ore has Been available so that by reduction with carbon it could be turned into an iron-ma.nga.nese alloy and a slag containing some 9 to 15 percent manganese. More siliceous ores have been smelted in the blast furnace to form iron-silicon-manganese alloys called spiegel. When lower-grade ores came in for serious consideration, which lias only been since l°l4, two types of processes received the most consideration — hydrometallurgical processes to produce a concentrate which could be smelted like the higher-grade ore and processes involving concentration of the manga¬ nese from manganiferous iron ores by preferential reduction of the iron (184)1. Special chapters in this bulletin are devoted to the production of ferro¬ manganese from ore, the hydrometallurgy cf manganese, and the Bureau of Mines modification of the preferential reduction process. Other methods of producing manganese alloys from low-grade or refractory ores have been suggested and may find future application. Manganese has a very high affinity for sulphur and is particularly adaptable to concentration by matte smelting. According to Betts (26), manganese silicate may be smelted with pyrite to give manganese sulphide and iron silicate. This method would be applicable to concentration of either the silicate or carbonate ores. The sulphide, once obtained, could be roasted to oxide and reduced in the usual way. Another possibility for the production of manganese from silicate ores involves their reduction by silicon or manganese silicides. Swedish Patent 52290, February 25, 1925. covers the reduction of a slag rich in manganese by silicon-manganese alloy containing more than 10 percent silicon, Joseph H. Brennan (38.) describes the concentration of manganese iron ores by partial reduction with silicon. Beckett (7,4,19) describes the reduction of manganese dioxide with a manganese silicide for the production of standard ferromanganese. Beckett gives as a typical alloy, manganese 64.4, silicon 24.6, and as a typi¬ cal ore, 5S.5O manganese as MnO^. The product of the reaction between these two is 80.11 percent manganese and 1.22 percent silicon.

To be able to continuously monitor the noise to which underground workers are exposed as a better way to help prevent hearing damage. The Approach: The Bureau of Mines has developed a Time-Resolved Audio Dosimeter which can be worn by miners to record noise level every 30 seconds and store It in a miniature solid state memory. Figure 1 is a photo of the dosimeter. [ ] How It Works: Acoustical noise is picked up by a micro-phone and fed to a sound level meter which produces a d-c voltage proportional to the A-weighted sound pressure level. (As specified by federal regulations, the A-weighted sound pres-sure level approximates the response of the ear by discounting the higher and lower frequency components of the noise.) This d-c voltage controls an oscillator which, together with related circuitry, produces a pulse train having a frequency that's proportional to the noise level.

Arc flash generally refers to the dangerous exposure to thermal energy released by an arcing fault on an electrical power system, and in recent years, arc flash hazards have become a prominent safety issue in many industries. This problem however, has not been effectively addressed in the mining industry. MSHA data for the period 1990 through 2001 attributes 836 injuries to “non-contact electric arc burns”, making it the most common cause of electrical injury in mining. This paper presents results from several elements of a recent NIOSH study of arc flash hazards in mining, and provides information and recommendations that can help reduce these injuries. Characteristics of past arc flash injuries in mining are first outlined, such as the electrical components and work activities involved (based on MSHA data). This is followed by a review of important concepts and terminology needed to understand this hazard. Next, methods for identifying, measuring, and managing arc flash hazards on a power system are covered, with emphasis on recommendations found in NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Finally, results are presented from a detailed arc flash hazard analysis performed on a sample mine electrical power system using IEEE 1584-2004a, focusing on components and locations presenting severe hazards as well as engineering solutions for reducing the risk to personnel. This bulletin is the fourth of a series a showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. The work of inspecting and analyzing coal delivered on Government contracts was transferred to the Bureau of Mines by an act of Congress effective July 1, 1910. It had been carried on for several years before that date by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. The purchase of coal on the dealer's statement as to quality or on the reputation of the mine or district producing the coal is gradually being discontinued. At present most coal-purchasing contracts make definite provision regarding the desired heating value of a coal and the composition as shown by analysis. The heating value is usually expressed in British thermal units" and the composition specified is that shown by proximate" analysis. The price to be paid for delivered coal is made to depend on whether the analyses and heating-value tests of samples representing the delivery show the quality to be above or below the quality set forth in the contract. Large coal consumers are beginning to appreciate more and more the importance of the cost of power as a factor in the cost of producing a finished article. The endeavor to increase the efficiency and the economical operation of a power plant calls for an intimate knowledge of the quality of the coal being used. The purchase of coal under specifications insures the purchaser getting what he pays for and the coal being of the quality guaranteed. In addition, the analyses and tests of the delivered coal furnish data whereby the power-plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the conditions of operation.

The importance of controlling respirable dust and methane gas levels in underground coal mining cannot be underestimated. While respirable dust can significantly affect the occupational health of underground coal miners, methane gas accumulations pose significant safety concerns for these same workers. Water sprays and machine mounted dust scrubbers offer effective control of respirable dust exposures and methane gas accumulations. Water must not only be applied carefully to avoid dust rollback to the machine operator but must create sufficient turbulence to remove dead zones that could contain high concentrations of methane gas. While the flooded-bed dust scrubber has been generally responsible for decreased worker exposures to respirable dusts, this device has proved effective in controlling methane levels at the face. This paper reviews practical applications of water sprays and dust scrubbers to control respirable dust and methane gas on continuous miner faces.

"Introductory Statement:In melting the nonferrous metals and alloys for foundry and rolling-mill work, even with the best practice, there is always a loss, due principally to oxidation. Melting losses are a serious source of financial loss in brass and bronze practice, but they are especially serious in the case of aluminum and its light alloys because of the relatively high price of aluminum. The indications are that the melting losses in many aluminum foundries of the United States are at times high, and in some plants (especially where certain furnaces are used) they are entirely too high when compared with the average practice. The fact that the oxidation losses in melting aluminum and its light alloys are high is well known, but it is doubtful whether the factors governing the most suitable methods of melting for a minimum of dross are equally well known. The metal losses involved in melting are worthy of especial attention now because of the rapidly growing importance of the aluminum industry.Factors in the operation of furnaces which affect metal and fuel losses:The essential requirements in the commercial melting of any metal or alloy are that the melting losses should be low, the melting should be rapid, and the melting cost should be low. Certainly it may not be possible to obtain these requirements in any furnace selected at random, and it follows that the design and the operation of furnaces for melting different metals are subjects that warrant the most extensive study and tests. As a general rule, in the industrial operation of furnaces, run on aluminum and aluminum alloys, an effort is made to keep the dross and oxidation losses as low as possible. In attempting to hold dross losses low, numerous factors involved in metal melting may be overlooked, or at least disregarded, and the net practical result may be that the furnace is exceedingly wasteful of fuel. In the case of aluminum and its light alloys, the effect of increasing the temperature of melting, at least in an atmosphere containing free oxygen and nitrogen, is to increase the net melting loss."
