In situ stresses are important input data for the design of safe, stable stope layouts and extraction sequences. However, it is commonly assumed that normal and shear stress gradients in a stress field are negligible and, consequently, that stresses are uniform throughout the region of analysis. To evaluate these assumptions and to provide input data for an analysis of a shaft pillar mining plan, in situ stresses were measured at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD, using overcoring on hollow inclusion cells and borehole deformation gauges. These measurements were used with conventional least squares, best fit data reduction schemes. The results showed that normal stresses within the shaft pillar were less than, but comparable to, those estimated from finite-element modeling. Shear stresses were an order of magnitude less than normal stresses and varied considerably from site to site. Possible causes of this variability include effects of scale, elastic moduli, anisotropy, and axial strain. Because of the variability, it is not possible to determine the magnitude of horizontal stress gradients.

As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires that the transverse load capacity of stoppings be equal to or greater than traditionally accepted in mine controls, which for block stoppings is generally accepted as 39 psf as referenced in the preamble to the CFR standard. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where our past research has shown that the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on rigid arch loading of the structure is proposed to determine the true transverse load capacity of block stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate rigid arching of block stoppings was developed and results verified through full-scale in-mine tests. The rigid arch tests have demonstrated transverse load capacities more than an order of magnitude higher than the ASTM E 72 evaluation method from which the 39-psf requirement is derived. More importantly, the rigid arch tests have shown that the load capability is dependent on the physical properties of the block and geometric properties of the wall and not the sealant.

At present, a need exists for more effective noise control in the coal-mining industry. In particular, new muffler designs with the required acoustic performance are needed for percussive pneumatic drills. Accordingly, the U. S. Bureau of Mines issued a contract to USS Engineers and Consultants to design a muffler capable of attenuating the noise from the air exhaust of a pneumatic drill. The specific objective of the contract was to design and deliver a prototype muffler that would attenuate the air-exhaust noise to 90 decibels on the A scale (90 dbA). The test drill used in this investigation was one used for roof-bolting purposes in coal mines. Using the combined approach of analysis by digital-computer program and experiment by simulated-noise tests, three prototype mufflers were designed and constructed at U. S. Steel Research. The mufflers consisted of a variety of resonator chambers and expansion-contraction chambers, and were of the following sizes: A muffler with a 3- by 5-inch elliptical cross section and about 8 inches in length. A muffler 5 inches in diameter and about 5-1/2 inches in length. A muffler 5 inches in diameter and about 10-1/2 inches in length. These mufflers were subjected to laboratory tests to determine their effectiveness in attenuating exhaust noise, mechanical noise, total drill noise, and simulated noise. All mufflers reduced the exhaust-noise level by about 25 dbA - from about 115 dbA without a muffler to below 90 dbA with a muffler - and thus were successful in meeting the contract objective. Field tests were conducted with the three prototype mufflers at U. S. Steel's Robena No. 4 Mine, and no icing problem was encountered. A fourth prototype muffler was designed to fit around the leg of the pneumatic drill. Tests showed that this kidney-shaped muffler also reduced the air-exhaust noise to below 90 dbA.

This report describes the development and application of PHASEQ/FLOW, a geochemical flow simulator capable of describing the dynamic changes in chemical composition of an aqueous solution during flow in a permeable medium. The solution components can react through intraaqueous reactions, redox, precipitation, or dissolution. The assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium ensures maximum generality with respect to the number of species and components possible; however, the fluid flow itself is limited to one-dimension. The report describes several applications: generic batch equilibria, flowing equilibria, uranium roll-front deposition, and roll-front leaching.

Lack of sufficient publication funds has resulted in the accumulation of considerable unpublished experimental work on copper metallurgy by the Bureau staff . The present report gives extended abstracts of this work , as well as a discussion of the best direction for future efforts . The experimental work reported in this series of papers was done in cooperation with the University of Arizona , Tucson , Ariz . The investigations covered in the third , fifth , and seventh papers were done under the direction of G. L. Oldright and the remainder under the direction of V. H. Gottschalk .

The Bureau of Mines evaluated temperature increases on the heads of resin-grouted bolts as indicators of the integrity of the anchoring of the bolt. Expected increases were calculated by the finite difference method; the calculations were checked by bolthead temperature measurements, both in the laboratory and in the field. The accuracy of the calculations varies with the validity of assumptions necessary to the process. Measurements in the laboratory produced a temperature rise of about 4.00 F on the head of a 4-foot bolt when installed with a full column of resin. This increase remained for about 30 minutes. Similar increases were noted on bolts installed at the White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., but bolthead temperature increases in the mine lasted only about 10 to 15 minutes. When partial columns (reduced amounts) were used, the temperature increases were smaller.

The fluorescence of many minerals, when excited by different wave lengths, of ultraviolet radiation, has long been recognized as a spectacular laboratory phenomenon. Since the original display in the British Museum, the phenomenon has been used frequently for educational purposes and public demonstrations. Its practical application for the rapid detection of certain minerals in ores and mill products at the zinc mine at Franklin, N. J., has been described.3 Due to technical improvements in ultraviolet-radiation apparatus, fluorescence has found a new field of application in the tungsten-minim; industry. Although fluorescence of scheelite (calcium tungstate) has been known for a number of years, the practical application of the phenomenon is the outgrowth of a program of cooperative research conducted by Ott F. Heizer, manager of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc. , Mill City, Nev., and Dr. Paul F. Kerr of Columbia University. Special portable lights for fluorescing scheelite have been developed and utilized in underground geological work. Thanks are due Ott F. Heizer for permission to publish data included in this paper.

This report is in fulfillment of Contract H0230031 awarded to Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., on May 23, 1973. The scope of work to be performed under this contract was divided into four phases: Phase I - Design, Phase II - Construction, Phase III - Field Demonstration, and Phase IV - Analysis and Final Report. During Phase I, an agreement was finalized with the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. for conducting field tests of the proposed shearer spray systems on a longwall panel in the company's Jane Mine in Indiana County, Pa. A drum was then designed which could be used on the Eickhoff shearer, Model EW170-L, being used on this longwall and which would utilize the following spray systems: 1. One spray nozzle located in front of each cutter bit with the jet directed at the cutting surface. 2. One spray nozzle located in back of each cutter bit with the jet directed at the back of the bit. 3. Standard Eickhoff nozzles located in a header along the drum scrolls. 4. A fixed header mounted on the shearer directly behind the drum to simulate the spray system originally used on the Eickhoff shearer.

Need for lightweight building materials was created in the latter part of the nineteenth century by a radical change in building design in which dead load or structural weight was transferred from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls of former construction practice to a load-carrying framework of beams and columns with thin walls. This new design was brought about by the introduction of structural steel followed by reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the erection of the load-supporting frame. The new materials and method of construction made possible the erection of skyscrapers and the building of bridges with long spans, and made feasible additions of one or more floors to existing buildings. As size and design of the load-bearing framework are controlled chiefly by dead load, the natural result was a. search for and use of light- weight materials in partitions, floors, and exterior walls. However, these thin walls created problems of heat and sound. insulation, so that building materials which possessed good heat- and sound-insulating properties in addition to light weight were objects of extensive research. One group of materials developed to fill this need comprised lightweight concretes, of which some were obtained by the use of lightweight aggregates. Although the advantages of lightweight.materials were evident from the first skyscrapers, there was a transition.stage.between the old bearing- wall and modern skeleton-frame types of building, with the heavy and massive construction of the former superimposed upon the latter. Hence, it was not until the period between 1910 and 1930 that the new lightweight concretes were recognized and used more extensively in the erection of large, nonresidential buildings. From this type of construction, light- weight-aggregate concretes entered-fields of residential and small non- residential building; in which they were found desirable for production of prefabricated, large-size; masonry units. Although the weight of each unit was reduced sufficiently to enable one man to handle it easily, properties of the new concretes other than light weight were the principal factors in the ready acceptance of these new materials in residential building. Manufacture of precast units includes complete lines of masonry and back-up blocks, bricks; floor beams, columns and partition, roof, and floor tiles and slabs. Recent improvements in casting machinery, development of the vibration-pressure machine, and a more thorough study and knowledge of the requirements and properties of the concrete mix have all contributed materially to the rapid expansion in use of lightweight aggregates in this industry.

A prototype borehole probe for ore grade determinations by means of in-situ neutron activation analysis was designed, built, and tested in a two-phase program. Phase I dealt with the design and fabrication of a borehole logging system for operation in 7.6 cm (3 in.) diameter or larger boreholes. It consisted of a 5.06 cm (2 in.) diameter borehole probe containing an intrinsic germanium detector, a canister-type solid cryogen cooling system, cooled FET preamplifier, linear amplifier, high voltage supply, analog-to-digital converter, microprocessor-based multichannel analyzer, buffer memory, bi-directional cable link, power supplies, and a Californium-252 neutron source. A surface support vehicle was designed and outfitted. A minicomputer system was constructed and software developed and tested. In Phase II the system was field tested at several mine sites. The system was calibrated, tested, improved, and demonstrated in a variety of applications. Tests were performed at sites pertinent to uranium, iron, coal, copper, silver and gold. Technical feasibility was demonstrated for all these applications except gold; the gold results were inconclusive. In-situ neutron activation analysis using high resolution gamma ray spectrometry was found to be a potentially viable logging method for are grade analysis under certain conditions.

To provide a faster means to open and close permissible electrical enclosures. Approach: An inspection and repair port with a multiple start thread which provides a permissible joint has been developed and tested. How It Works: The inspection port screw thread has a large pitch, which allows the port cover to be rotated from fully closed 10 fully open, in less than one revolution. See Figure 1. When the cover is screwed back in. it be-gins engagement within one eighth turn because the screw design has eight separate threads. To prevent Its unauthorized opening, the port cover has a bolt guarded by ears which accept a padlock. The threads are designed to tolerate a reasonable amount of grit without binding, although wipe-off cleanness is necessary during reassembly. This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. The purpose of this investigation was twofold: (1) To devise a rapid method for determining quantitatively the porphyrin-carboxylic acid content of a particular crude-oil porphyrin aggregate, and (2) to isolate porphyrins in the crystalline state from crude-oil porphyrin aggregates. The first purpose was accomplished by applying adsorption chromatography. In fulfillment of the second aim three different crystalline porphyries were isolated by methods which involved both adsorption chromatography and fractionation of benzene solutions with hydrochloric acid of varying strength. The three porphyrins had etio, rhodo-, and phyllo-type absorption spectra, respectively. INTRODUCTION Many samples of petroleum have, as interesting minor constituents, chemical compounds known as metalloporphyrins. Their presence in crude oil and other bituminous materials was first discovered by Treibs a quarter century ago. Much experimental work has been done on metalloporphyrins because of their importance to the petroleum industry. They have a deleterious effect on refining catalysts. The ash resulting from the burning of heavy fuel oil is very reactive, We to the presence of metallic constituents, particularly vanadium. In oil-fired gas turbines, the ash may build up on the blades, causing imbalance of the rotors and, in addition, severe corrosion. In industrial boilers, the ash residue is responsible for severe damage to boiler tubes and to the refractory brickwork (15).4 Through study of the chemical constitution of the various metalloporphyrins found in petroleum, much can be learned concerning the origin, migration, and history of crude oils.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) constructed the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) to investigate the hydraulic parameters relating to the transport of coarse coal. To achieve these goals in a timely and efficient manner, the Bureau contracted to Boeing Services International (BSI) the responsibility of operating the HTRF and providing technical support. This data report is a summary of the testing and data results for the period 22 November to 10 December 1982. The testing covered herein is for coarse 2-in by 0 (minus 50 mm) Pittsburgh Seam coal in a 6-in (150 mm) pipeline, at velocities ranging from 5 to 20 ft/s (1.5 to 6.1 m/s) and at concentrations ranging from 15 to 45 pct by weight.
