The evaluation of the effectiveness of the time domain Coal Interface Detector developed by the General Electric Company under contract H0155120 is the subject of this report. The sensor utilizes differences in the time characteristics of shearer vibrations as sensed by an accelerometer mounted on the ranging arm to discriminate the cutting of coal and rock. Pour identical time domain sensors were supplied by the Bureau for field evaluation. The performance of the time domain sensor was evaluated by an extensive field test and data collection program that included four longwall mines and a total of nine mine visits. The intent was to determine the sensor's applicability to a wide range of mining conditions and to document its limitations. Results of the extensive field tests indicate that shearer vibration data processed by GE's time domain signal processing algorithm cannot be used to reliably detect when the cutting drum crossed the coal/rock interface.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to develop and test for laboratory use a retort embodying many features required for practical commercial-scale applications of vacuum distillation of metals. A gas-fired vacuum retort was developed comprising a hollow, cylindrical graphite liner encased in a thin shell of stainless steel. The liner prevents the shell from collapsing under vacuum and protects it from corrosion by metal vapors and the molten metal charge. The vacuum-tight shell protects the liner from oxidation and flame erosion. The retort was used to distill zinc from dross and die-casting scrap. More than 99 percent of the zinc was recovered as a condensate containing 99.8 to 99.9 percent zinc. (Atmospheric distillation recovers 95 to 98 percent at a purity of 99.5 percent zinc.) Distillation rates of 50 pounds of zinc per hour were attained at a temperature of 65° C. with pressures ranging between 50 and 100 microns. Distillation at this low temperature is not practicable at atmospheric pressure. Also, the retort is suitable for distilling other volatile metals such as cadmium and magnesium.

[The purpose of the study is to investigate cases of subsidence over abandoned mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh Coal identified from published and unpublished sources and to determine through a consideration of the geology, topography, climate, mining activity, and evidence at ground surface, what mechanisms control subsidence .and under what circumstances it takes place. The study wan performed it two phases, the first to identify all documented incidents of subsidence in mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh coal Region; and the second, to study a particular portion of the region in detail, collecting pertinent data relative to the sites within, characterizing roil the nature of the subsidence and its economic consequences, and determining the applicability of the findings to other areas whore similar problems with the collapse of abandoned miner have been encountered.]

As part of the Phase I study activity, a questionnaire was sent to a representative sampling of mining companies to obtain information on the uses, use conditions, personnel policies and other user concerns associated with front-end loaders. On-site visits to several of the mining companies were also parried out and the questionnaire was used during these visits as well. Five major areas were dealt with in the user questionnaire. These included: 1) Front-End Loader Critique - An open-ended form was employed to permit the mining companies to describe the particular things they liked and disliked about front-end loaders, in general, and/ or specific models in particular. 2) Usage - A form indicating the functions performed by front-end loaders and the numbers, makes and models of front-end loaders being used by mining companies. 3) Environment - A form where the user indicated the various types of conditions encountered in their use of front-end loaders. 4) Personnel - A form for describing factors pertaining to the qualifications of front-end loader operators. 5) Miscellaneous and Comments - A form permitting the user to comment on his feelings toward standardization of front-end loader operator stations.

In 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources in the Carrizo Gorge Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The 14,571-acre WSA, located 42 miles east of El Centro, CA, is underlain primarily by Mesozoic granitic rocks and pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks. Six prospects were found within the WSA and two mines are adjacent to it. Mineral deposits within the WSA have had insufficient development and rock exposures for calculating resources. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources; however, further exploration may disclose gem quality minerals. Two mines adjacent to the WSA, the Pack Rat and Beebe Hole, have produced gem quality kunzite and aquamarine from pegmatite dikes. According to the owners, a significant amount of gem minerals have been mined here in the last decade. Based on past production and the characteristic minerals indicating gem-bearing pockets, additional pockets are likely. Similar pegmatite dikes occur from Mt. Tule to Carrizo Gorge and may contain gem-bearing pockets. Pegmatite dikes also occur in the WSA near Rockhouse Canyon, but contained few of the mineral associations indicative of gem-bearing pockets. Manganese occurrences north of the Beebe Hole and Packrat Mines and within the WSA contain low concentrations of manganese. Significant sand and gravel were not identified. There is no evidence of deposits of oil and gas, or geothermal energy.

As part of the overall development of a borehole mining system -develop backfilling techniques to reduce possible damage to the environment caused by either the cavities or the piles of sand tailings that result from in-borehole hydraulic mining. (Borehole mining is described in technology News No. 56.) Approach Water filled cavities at the bottom of boreholes are rapidly and economically backfilled by jetting a sand-tailings slurry underwater. How It Works The Bureau of Mines borehole mining system creates a cavity having a horizontal diameter of more than 50 feet. (See photograph). This cavity can be backfilled with much of the sand previously mined. The sand tailings or similar backfill material is dumped by a front end loader into a slurry mixing tank at the rate of about one ton every three minutes. Enough water is added to give a thick, but pumpable slurry. The slurry is pumped down the borehole through a string of 4-inch pipe to the cavity. After passing through a right elbow at the end of the pipe, the slurry is ejected through a nozzle. The resulting slurry jet emplaces the backfill at the outer wall of the cavity. To obtain an even distribution of fill in the cavity, the nozzle is slowly rotated. The nozzle and pipe assembly is supported from a turntable on the surface. See diagram.

The objective of this investigation was to determine minimum air velocities and entrainment rates for coal and rock dust dispersion in wind tunnel experiments under conditions that simulate dispersion from surfaces in coal mines where airflows are induced by weak gas explosions. Dust deposits were bed-or ridge-shaped; particle sizes were 6 to 80 microns (cohesive deposits) or 100 to 150 microns (free-flowing deposits); and wind tunnels were 7.62 cm wide by 5.08 cm high by 300 cm long, and 2.4 m wide by 1.5 m high by 215 m long. The investigation showed that minimum air velocities (directed at mid-height) of separate, layered, or mixed piles of coal dust and rock dust were within the range 5 to 30 m/sec, independent of size of wind tunnel. This finding considerably facilitates scaling of data to mine-size passageways. Free-flowing deposits dispersed relatively slowly by single-particle detachment; cohesive dusts dispersed faster by the breaking and lifting of large clumps along weak failure flames; particle dispersion occurred in flight. Layered or mixed deposits of coal and rock dust did not disperse selectively. Semiempirical expressions were derived relating minimum air velocities and dispersion rates to dust-pile geometry, cohesion, porosity, and bulk density.

Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

The Federal Bureau of Mines made pilot plant investigations of the process requirements necessary to produce heavy fuel oil by the liquid-phase hydrogenation of bituminous coal. The investigation was carried out in three separate series of experiments. The first series studied the effect of temperature and contact time on product distribution at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 420° to 480° C. in the presence of 0.1 wt.-pct../ stannous sulfide plus 0.05 wt.-pct. iodoform based on gross coal. As a result of increased contact times and temperatures, the conversion-6/ and yield of hydrocarbon gas increased, the viscosity of product oil decreased, and elimination of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur from coal increased. The yield of oil did not indicate any definite trend with changes in temperature and contact time. The yield of oil ranged from 76 to 85 pct. for Pittsburgh coal and from 60 to 85 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Asphaltenes in the product oil ranged from 17 to 38 pct. of the total oil for Pittsburgh coal and from 12 to 22 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Fuel oils meeting Bunker C or American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) Grade 6 specifications were produced with Rock Springs coal at 0.2- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 440° to 480° C. and with Pittsburgh coal at 0.3- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 420° to 460° C. In the second series of experiments tin, nickel, iron, and zinc were evaluated as catalysts for the hydrogenation of Rock Springs coal to heavy fuel oil at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 460° C. Using the apparent conversion of coal as criterion of catalyst activity, at a contact time of 0.45 hr. tin was the most effective catalyst; nickel and iron were nearly as effective, but the use of zinc resulted in much lower conversion. When the contact time was increased to 0.80 hr., the apparent conversion of coal was essentially the same for each of the catalysts. When the yield of oil boiling below 3550 C. was used as criterion of catalyst activity, at 0.45 hr. the order of activity was tin, iron, nickel, and zinc; at 0.80 hr. tin was far superior and the others were essentially equal. The product oils contained from 8 to 20 pct. asphaltenes.

"INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. All are old-timers at Retsof and, according to Courthope, contri¬buted the ""lion's share in bringing the mine to its present standard of safety.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTThis circular was made possible by the generous cooperation of T. This report describes in detail the circuitry used in the Automated Time Domain Reflectometry System and the testing and modification done to the system to improve the units performance and consistency. The analog ATDR software is described and explained in detail. Also attempts to implement the same Assembly Language program in a higher level language (PLM) are documented along `h two versions of the PLM program - one which uses a data filtering approach to limit noise and another which uses data averaging to reduce noise. The field testing of the analog and digital ATDR units is described along with the hardware modifications that resulted. The analog unit has been abandoned and the digital unit adopted for most field tests. Tests indicate that the digital units are much more consistent and less confusing for the lay-person to operate. The results indicate that the it can locate an abnormality in a test cable to within 5% of the true location (provided the cable phase velocity is known). The units can consistently locate shunt type faults which are less than 300 ohms and series type faults which are greater than 30 ohms.

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

Remote operation of continuous mining machines has enhanced the health and safety of underground miners in many respects; however, numerous fatal and non-fatal continuous miner struck-by accidents have occurred. In an effort to prevent these injuries, NIOSH researchers at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory studied the workplace relationships between continuous miner operators and various tramming tasks of the equipment using motion capture data, operator response times, and field of view data to evaluate the factors influencing operator-machine struck-by events (contact with a solid object) in a virtual mine environment. It is not feasible (nor ethical) to use human subjects to directly evaluate factors that precipitate such injuries. However, use of motion analysis data and digital human models can facilitate analysis of struck-by accident risk by allowing investigators to manipulate factors that influence injury. Factors included in this study included machine speed, direction of escape, the direction the operator was facing relative to the machine, work posture, distance from machine, and operator anthropometry. Close proximity to the machine, high machine tramming speeds, a right-facing orientation and operator positioning near the tail all resulted in high risk of being struck.

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. The Bureau of Mines developed three types of passive water barriers for suppressing slow-moving coal dust explosions. One type is a modification of a conventional tub barrier and depends on the dynamic pressure generated ahead of an explosion to tilt the tub to release its water and suppress the explosion. The other two barriers operate in response to an increase in static pressure developed ahead of the explosion. Tests indicate the first barrier begins to release its water at air speeds as low as 50 ft/sec, and the second and third barriers will operate at a rise in static pressure as little as 0.5 psi. All three barriers were found to be effective in suppressing coal dust explosions propagating at speeds as low as 100 ft/sec. A plan is described for installing a water barrier in a working mine on a trial basis.

"INTRODUCTION The United States, with its vast resources of relatively low-grade zinc been the world's leading producer of zinc -metal for many years. The expanded zinc production during the period, 1939-44, inclusive, was induced by favorable premium prices and has depleted the known ore reserves in the United States. The 1943-44 rate of zinc production cannot long be maintained in the United States, especially if premium prices are removed. Domestic zinc reserves, have been depleted to such an extent that it is doubtful if our mines will again be able to completely and continually fulfill the needs of this country.The Bureau of Mines, anticipating a postwar consumer demand for 550,000 to 750,000 tons of slab zinc and an additional 100,000 tons for use in paints and chemicals, sent two engineers to Sedanka Island in July 1945 to investi¬gate the deposits near Biorka Harbor.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion the Mining Branch, Lowell B.
