KIOST has developed the pilot mining robot, named MineRo ?? from early-2011 to mid- 2012. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical structure and hydraulic system. One unit-module has two track systems, two pick-up devices, two crushers, one lifting pump and one thruster. The pick-up device is fitted on the frame of the track device. All actuators are driven hydraulically, which are manipulated by valves and the controllers. Each unit-module is equipped with one dual HPU of 250kW / 4,000V. PWM-16 (INNOVA AS) as hydraulic valve controller is adopted, which outputs PWM signals of 16 channels and can be used under pressure in oil-filled box. To measure angular velocity or displacement of hydraulic actuator, turbine-type flow-meters are adopted. The flow-meter has RF (Radio Frequency) type pulse detector, which extends the flow range by eliminating drag on the rotor. Two track motors, two crusher motors, lifting pump, one thruster can be controlled their velocities through feedback of the measured flow-rates. As well as the flow-rates, the states of the hydraulic system such as hydraulic pressures, temperatures, leakages are measured through a self-developed flow-pressure canister. In that canister, multi-channel amplifier boards are installed, through which the vast amount of data is acquired and transmitted to the main controller using serial communication.

ODP Leg 158 drilled seventeen holes into the active TAG hydrothermal mound and underlying stockwork, 26°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Drilling in five different areas, including a high-temperature black smoker complex and a lower-temperature white smoker vent field, revealed the multi-stage depositional history and character of sub-seafloor mineralization and alteration. The upper portion of the mound consist of massive pyrite and pyrite breccias which are underlain by pyrite-anhydrite breccias and then by quartz-pyrite breccias. Quartz-pyrite breccias grade down into silicified wallrock breccias. Chloritised basalt breccias occur at depths greater than 100 m. Several stages of quartz-pyrite±chalcopyrite veins occur in the stockwork zone and lower portions of the mound, whereas anhydrite±pyrite±chalcopyrite veins occur within the upper parts of the mound. Recovery of unaltered basalt near the edges of the mound has constrained the extent of the stockwork zone to a pipe-like feature 80 meters in diameter. A detailed sulfur isotope investigation of sulfides and sulfates within mound and the underlying stockwork zone has revealed the overall range of sulfide d34S analyses to be 0.35% to 10.27%. Anhydrite has a tight range of d34S values 20.55% to 21.56%. There are distinct differences in d34S values between the different textural types of pyrite (massive sulfide, breccia clasts, disseminations associated with alteration, and veins). The massive sulfide and breccia clasts have a similar distribution of d34S values (6%-8%), however the d34S values of the disseminated pyrite associated with the alteration are distinctly heavier (8%-10%). Vein sulfides have the lightest d34S values (5%-7%). Sulphur-isotope values at TAG are, in general, the heaviest reported for unsedimented mid-ocean ridge deposits.

The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

The primary objective of this study was to establish the fate and distribution of material rejected during marine aggregate dredging, and the extent to which this is associated with spatial changes in biological community composition. Two actively dredged sites in the southern North Sea (Licence Areas 430 and 106) were selected in order to provide a comparison of impacts between sites subjected to different levels of dredging intensity and of contrasting environmental conditions. Dispersal of material rejected during the dredging process was monitored by means of acoustic doppler current profiling techniques (ADCP). Composition of the substratum and benthic invertebrate assemblages were investigated by the analysis of seabed grab samples. It was found that dredging in both areas had an impact on seabed bathymetry in the form of dredge furrows and also led to a reduction of the coarse gravel-sized components of the worked area. Sand sized particles were shown to increase in the surface deposits of both dredged areas. This is likely to reflect both the removal of coarse particles as cargo and the settlement of finer particles rejected during overboard screening. Dispersion and settlement profiles of material rejected by dredging vessels suggested that the majority of the suspended sediment load resulting from overboard screening settles to the seabed within 500 m. Some evidence of suspended sediment loads above background levels were noted at distances of up to 2 km from the working vessel. Analysis of the particle size composition of the deposits, along the axis of transport of material from the dredged sites, suggested that the impact on the sediment composition outside the boundaries of the dredged sites is dependent on the strength and direction of net sediment flux at the seabed. Benthic invertebrate communities within the dredged zones of both areas were found to differ significantly from communities in nearby undredged deposits. A major suppression of species richness and abundance was noted in the dredged sectors of both sites when compared to control locations. A ?footprint? of potential impact on the benthic fauna was noted in samples taken along the axis of sediment transport at distances of up to 1750m outside the boundaries of Area 430. In contrast, impacts on benthic community structure at Area 106 appeared to be confined to the immediate vicinity of the dredged zone itself. This apparent difference in impacts, beyond the boundaries of the dredged sectors between the two study sites, was thought to be a reflection of the smaller quantities of material rejected at Area 106 and the weak seabed sediment flux which is characteristic of this area. These findings, along with those of numerous dredging impacts studies, were then used to make generalised predictions of macrobenthic community recovery following marine aggregate extraction in a variety of seabed habitats.

"Ferromanganese nodules are again of interest because of their high concentrations of Ni, Co, Cu as well as REE. With regards to an operational underwater mining industry, one of the main questions and important requests is to finding a method that can predict the abundance of nodules with high accuracy within reasonable time spans, without many requirements for ground truth data; and all these on an operational scale and ideally automated. In this regard, we present results of a study based on the combination of highresolution multibeam and optical data acquired by an AUV using specific machine learning techniques to reveal a detailed distribution of the Mn-nodules in correlation to the seafloor terrain. The accuracy of the method employed and results gained were validated and approved through comprehensive statistical analysis and by comparison to box-core data.Study AreaOur study area (AUV survey block G77) is located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) (Eastern Central Pacific Ocean), an area that has been receiving international research and industrial attention for many years already (e.g. McKelvey et al., 1979; Bernhard and Blissenbach, 1988, von Stackelberg and Beiersdorf, 1991, Jeong et al. 1996). Block G77 covers an area of 9.5km2 in a depth between -4478m and -4536m. The area is characterised by gentle slopes 0-5° (0-3° in most of the area and only in the outer parts of the Block slopes can exceed 5°). The seafloor is characterised by moderate to low rugosity, the only exception being a small area in the eastern part, where sub-recent smallscale volcanic activity created 15 cone-shaped morphological features of up to 55m height and 150m width that are clustered in an area of 700 x 380m (Figure 1)."

The Marine Mining Technology Center (MMTC) was authorized by an act of the United States Congress in 1996. The act established several marine minerals research centers in the U.S., including one at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska MMTC is funded through the Minerals Management Service of the Department of the Interior and concentrates its research in the Artic seas region. Recent research projects at the MMTC include, among others, a geographic information system (GIS) application to the gold placer deposits offshore Nome, Alaska, a marine gold placer reserve definition model using a neural network, and development of an expert system model for submarine tailings disposal (STD) planning and decision-making. Although geostatistics remains the most prevalent method used today for ore grade estimation, researchers have made numerous improvements over the years for accurately predicting grades of ore using various other estimation techniques. As a result, the neural network has recently emerged as an alternative to geostatistics for grade estimation purposes. A neural network is a non-linear, model-free estimator that is well-suited for noisy and/or sparse data environments. Neural networks perform best with non-linear spatial data, contrary to the stationary assumption of ordinary Kriging techniques. In the marine placer ore reserve definition model, the neural network technique was used to estimate placer gold reserves offshore Nome. This study demonstrated the utility of neural network modeling over other traditional ore reserve estimation methods, especially for high cut-off grades. Some of the relevant issues of neural network modeling were also addressed in the study. In testing, the neural network produced results that were close to those from geostatistical techniques including Kriging, polygon, and inverse distance methods.

Exploration for high-value massive sulfide deposits on the ocean floor typically commences with a search for chimney fields in appropriate geological settings, followed by collection and assaying of standing chimneys. Individual chimney fields are generally too small in aggregate volume to constitute viable resources in their own right. Unless numerous small fields occur in reasonably close proximity, presence of plentiful sub-seafloor mineralization with acceptable metal tenor is the more likely requirement for potential exploitation. Expensive drilling is required to prove up mounds of collapsed chimneys, or dilatory sheets and veins or replacements of massive/semimassive sulfide (?stockworks? or ?manto?-like bodies) in underlying host rock. Where multiple targets have been defined, as many parameters as possible are desirable to help rank them for drilling.

Ferromanganese crust samples collected from Central Pacific sea-mount areas became of special interest after surprisingly high nobel metal contents have been analyzed. Hydrogenetic crust growth is controlled by the conditions of the oceanic water column. Thicker encrustations show two crust generations of different age ranges. The mean values of the chemical composition state that the older generation is richer in P, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pt and depleted in Fe, Ti, Co, Al, and Si. The differences apparently indicate a distinct change of the geochemical environment. The Pt concentrations vary up to 1800 ppb and do not clearly correlate to one of the other metals. This might indicate a bond of multiple nature. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the Pt concentrations in ferromanganese samples. Our models consider seawater and cosmic spherules as responsible Pt sources. In seawater the main species of dissolved Pt probably exist as the doubly negatively charged tetrachloro-complex. A precipitation of Pt in seawater may take place if the chloro-complex is decomposed by reduction of pt2+ to pt0. On the other hand, the Mn02 precipitation is caused by an oxidation of Mn2+ which is supplied from the oxygen-minimum zone. In September-October 2002, shallow seafloor drilling using the 5 m-Rockdrill of the British Geological Survey and the German R/V Sonne has revealed critical information on the sub-surface nature of two distinct hydrothermal systems in the New Ireland fore-arc and the Manus Basin of Papua New Guinea. Drilling at the summit plateau of Conical Seamount (39 holes, 31 % recovery) south of Lihir Island in the central New Ireland fore-arc has confirmed the sub-seafloor extend of previously discovered surface gold mineralization (up to 230 g/t Au) and associated alteration to a depth of at least 4.5 m below the seafloor and further proven analogies to the giant Ladolam epithermal gold deposit on Lihir Island. Drill core samples of clay-silica alteration contain average gold grades up to 14.2 g/t Au over a length of about 30 cm (fire assay Lihir Gold Ltd. laboratory) and appear to be part of a more extensive gold zone located below a carapace of relatively fresh ancaramitic and trachybasalt. These samples contain a complex mineralogy including realgar, orpiment, galena, sphalerite, some chalcopyrite and pyrite, together with amorphous silica, and possibly cinnabar. In addition to high concentrations of gold, shipboard analyses indicate that the gold-rich samples contain high values of Pb, As, and Sb, which is a characteristic feature of a magmatic-hydrothermal style of mineralization and alteration.

The Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute conducted its first exploration for deepsea mineral resources in 1983, and began a systematic deepsea prospecting in 1989 among Micronesian islands and in central and eastern parts of Carion-Clipperton fracture zones of eastern Pacific. With the arrival of R/V Onnuri in 1992, KORDI commenced a full-scale national program for nodule exploration. The total area surveyed by KORDI covers more than 1,500,000 km2. At the end of 1993, based on the collected data, Korea designated 300,000 km2 in the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone as prospective mining area for manganese nodules, and accordingly, the government of Korea submitted the application in January of 1994 to the United Nations for registration as a pioneer investor and for the allocation of a pioneer area. This application was approved by the General Committee of the Preparatory Commission in August 1994. As a result, Korea became the 7m pioneer investor under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. KORDI is now carrying out detailed exploration survey and environmental studies in the registered area to fulfill required obligations to UN, and Korea will continue exploring the last frontier on earth. It is KORDI&apos;s unshaken calling to be successful in exploiting deepsea resources to provide our nation resources it lacks. It is not only a challenge to explore deepsea, but it is also our national mission to explore and succeed in our endeavor for future generation.

The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), Marine Geology and Geophysics Division and co-located World Data Center-A for MGG archives and distributes global marine sediment data from U.S. and international sources. NGDC is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. NGDC offers a variety of digital marine sediment data sets including sediment descriptions, textural analyses, geochemistry, paleontology, paleomagnetism, and well logs. Some data sets are compiled by outside sources and sent to NGDC for distribution; many are received under exchange agreements and through the World Data Center system. Other data sets are compiled at NGDC, frequently in cooperation with other government agencies or academic institutions. One of the best examples of the latter is the Index to Marine Geological Samples, or "Core Curators&apos; Database".

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the central North Atlantic and the Gorda Ridge within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon are yielding new discoveries of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. The TAG hydrothermal field in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26 degree N, 45 degree W has been a site of international collaborative research since the discovery there of extensive manganese deposits associated with low temperature hydrothermal activity in 1973 as part of the TAG (Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse Project). The first high-temperature hydrothermal activity, massive sulfide deposits and vent biota discovered in the Atlantic were found at the TAG hydrothermal field in 1985. Collaborative dive series with DSV ALVIN in 1990 and in 1991 with the two Russian MIR submersibles in the TAG field have found and sampled large inactive sulfide mounds in addition to the previously known active sulfide mound. The active sulfide mound on the floor of the rift valley is about 250 m in diameter and 40 m high with a concentric zonation of mineral types and flow regimes decreasing in temperature from 365 degree C black smokers at the center to white smokers and diffuse flow toward the margins. The recent dive series in coordination deep-towed instrument surveys have delineated a zone extending about 5 km along the lower east wall of the rift valley of inactive sulfide mounds up to a kilometer in diameter. MIR Mound in this zone consists of a central sulfide zone about 400 m in diameter and 50 m high surrounded by a halo of low-temperature deposits to 200 m wide. Inactive sulfide chimneys contain the first primary, free gold grains found at a hydrothermal site on a mid-ocean ridge (P.A. Rona, Y.A. Bogdanov, E.G. Gurvich, N.A. Rimski-Korsakov, A.M. Accumulation of cobalt -rich ferromanganese crusts on Pacific seamounts located off-ridge in the Hawaiian EEZ, represents a complex process that involves geologic aging of the seamounts, geographic transportation- of the seamounts on the Pacific plate during the past 80 million years, and geochemical history of the oceans for that period. A comparative study of the building and erosion processes of the young Loihi Submarine Volcano, located south of the Island of Hawaii , and the 80 million year old Cross Seamount, located west of Hawaii , shows that both edifices show wide armchair-shaped talus chutes and intervening ridges of exposed dikes. The similarity between the observed mass wasting process on Loihi and Cross suggests that the slopes of submarine volcanoes are geologically unstable from the time of their origin on the seafloor through their entire geological history. The slopes of Cross are covered by coalesced ferromanganese crust covered talus, steep exposed dike faces, and crust covered dike ridges. A study of the stratigraphy of the crusts shows a range of thicknesses and number of unconformities present. The thickest crusts, up to 8 centimeters, are found preserved within the larger coalesced slabs along the shallower slopes of the talus chutes and along the crests of the ridges between water depths of 400 and 1800 meters. The platinum content was used in stratigraphic correlation between the crusts in the coalesced slabs and those collected from ridges with the PISCES V submersible. Surface processing vessels for deep-sea nodule mining operations will produce dewatering plumes that will be released at some depth into the ocean water column. We are studying all aspects of this part of the nodule mining process. First, we have developed analytical and numerical models to determine the effects of highly non-uniform, realistic stratifications on forced, compressible plumes with finite initial size. The classical plume model is developed to take into account the effects of compressibility and thermal conduction through the dewatering pipe. Our results show how small-scale features of a realistic stratification can have a large effect on a plume, and provide a basis for determining at what depth dewatering plumes can be released. These results form the basis for our PLUMEX field experiments, in which we will study the dynamics of dewatering plumes over the course of one week of field tests from the vessel R/V Sally Ride. The field experiments will use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and a Phased-Array Doppler Sonar (PADS) system to study the characteristics of the dewatering plumes. The subsequent transport of the material in the dewatering plume will be monitored via shipboard surveys and, potentially, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) operations, and these studies will be integrated with near real-time, data assimilating numerical model predictions. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a field validated, recommend strategy for the release and monitoring of dewatering plumes, to help inform the development of ISA regulations and the planning of industrial operations.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20&apos;S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. Subsea mineral deposit exploration aboard the R/V Onnuri was performed along the northern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 17°S in December 2009 ~ January 2010 (09IR Leg01 and 09IR Leg02) and December 2010~ January 2011 (10IR Leg01, 10IR Leg02, and 10IR Leg03). Final goal of the expedition for the first Korean research cruise on mid ocean ridge system is to define seafloor massive sulfide ore bodies through searching the active hydrothermal vents nearby spreading centers as well as to elucidate the nature of spreading segments of the northern CIR area where no systematic survey have been operated before by mapping and sampling of volcanic rocks. The preliminary result of topographical interpretations of bathymetry clearly display ocean core complex between 10°S and 11°S. The ocean core complex is featured by topographic-high area with corrugated surface. Lineaments of corrugations of the ocean core complex are clearly perpendicular to abyssal hill direction which is triggered by symmetric-normal faults. Ocean core complex are favor for hydrothermal fluid path because of the long-lived faults. In further exploration, more detailed examination, including systematic CTD casting and tows, need to narrow down actual venting site around ocean core complex. Magnetic field survey is able to estimate the location of hydrothermal vents with the properties that high temperature of hydrothermal fluids over Curie-point can cause thermal demagnetization. In magnetization intensity map, most of low magnetization zones are located at the nodal point over the ridge axis and the ocean core complex.

The 21-year long-term Japan-SOPAC Cooperative Deep-sea Mineral Resources Study Programme was completed in March 2006. The Programme, which commenced in 1985, has seen numerous marine research surveys being conducted within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of 12 SOPAC member countries (Figure 1). The various research and government institutions that have been closely involved in this longstanding Programme include: the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) (formerly, the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, MMAJ) and relevant ministries of the participating Pacific Island governments.

Various natural, commercial, engineering and operational factors govern the evolution of approaches taken in the exploration for Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS) and in delineating the resource. These stages are prerequisites to the proposed mining of SMS deposits. This paper presents and analyses these factors from the view of an SMS exploration company that is pioneering the exploration of this rich alternative source of zinc, copper and gold. Current exploration practices developed by Marine Scientific Research (MSR) workers for SMS deposits are expected to give way to industry-generated methods as the SMS exploration industry gathers momentum. The exploration process falls into three phases that are described below: Prospecting (locating targets), Indicating Resources, and Measuring Mineral Resources Considerable streamlining of the SMS exploration process will accelerate the rate of discovery. The economics of SMS mining are projected to be superior to comparable terrestrial mining operations in both operating cash cost and capital terms.
