IN recent years, most of the reconnaissance work of the Geological Survey of Canada has been mapped on a scale of 1 inch to 4 miles. Topographic base maps, commonly made from aerial photographs, were available to the geologist for such work. The advent of war curtailed aerial photography for civilian purposes, and by 1941 all areas already photographed had been geologically mapped. Nevertheless, the need for geological maps to assist post-war prospecting was so apparent, and the country to be covered is so vast, that some new method of rapid mapping had to be devised. It was felt that the need would be met if geological maps could be produced at a scale of 1 inch to 8 miles, provided they were sufficiently accurate in topographic detail to serve as guides to travel. Though in such maps there would be considerable sacrifice of geological detail, they would serve to outline, at least approximately, the major geological units, some of which might prove of sufficient interest to warrant later detailed study. It seemed that such mapping would be particularly useful in the northern regions of Canada which the work of early explorers has indicated are underlain largely by granitic rocks. These, so far as is known, are barren of mineral deposits, but within them are known to be areas or bands of 'greenstones' of the type that, in some localities, have been found to contain valuable orebodies. The problem, then, was to devise a method of mapping, particularly of such greenstone bands, that would make it possible to cover a relatively large area-say 30,000 square miles-in one season and at a cost below that of 4-mile mapping, with, of course, some sacrifice of accuracy. The problem seemed to be threefold: (a) to observe as much of the bed-rock as possible; (b) to produce a topographical map of as much of the area as possible, with particular reference to portions of geological interest; and (c) to cover as large an area as possible in a limited time, which meant faster modes of travel than have hitherto been used. The obvious answer to all three phases of the problem was the use of aircraft. If rock types could be broadly differentiated from the air, reconnaissance traverses by air would supply the answer to the first part of the problem. For topography, air photographs taken on reconnaissance flights appeared to be the answer. For the third phase of the problem, the use of aircraft was ideal.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

"The Pine Point area is on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, 510 air miles north of Edmonton and J JO miles south of Yellowknife, N.W.T. The occurrence there of lead and zinc was reported in J 899 by R. Bell (5) of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in the following years several claims were staked and some prospecting was done. In 1928 Atlas Exploration Co. took over the property containing the discovery occurrences. In 1929 The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (""Cominco"") and Ventures Ltd. participated with Atlas in forming the Northern Lead-Zinc Co., which, under the direction of J. M. Bell, carried out 24,499 feet of drilling in the discovery and surrounding areas. Two shafts and many surface pits were also sunk. This work showed that the discovery deposits contain about 500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore, but no new orebody was found.In 1936 D. F. Kidd (11) drew attention to the highly significant space relations between the base-metal discoveries at Pine Point and the projections of certain major Precambrian faults mapped earlier by C. H. Stockwell. Geological work by Cominco in 1940 and subsequent years suggested the presence of mineable deposits within a belt of land including part of the area of earlier field work and extending far beyond it. Between 1946 and 1954 exploration financed by Cominco and Ventures Ltd. included 182,950 feet of diamond drilling, 383 feet of sinking, and 240 feet of drifting, raising, and crosscutting. This work was successful in finding substantial quantities of new ore in places where bedrock is completely concealed.The topography is one of low relief, characterized in many places by swampy muskeg and shallow, marl-bottomed ponds. The area where ore has been found is generally higher ground which, though not well drained, is comparatively dry. It is also marked by raised beaches and a few sand dunes overgrown by small spruce and pine. Bedrock is generally overlain by a variable thickness of hard, glacial boulder clay. This in turn is covered by silt, sand, and gravel, probably deposited from the waters of Great Slave Lake, which formerly extended many miles beyond its present southern shore."

ABSTRACT The comparative economics of ion exchange and direct precipitation have been analyzed by developing indicative CAPEX/OPEX models for typical alkaline leach uranium circuits. An agitated tank ore leach application is considered, comparing resin-in-pulp and direct precipitation as recovery options. Capital and operating cost estimates are derived from rates and factors used in recent studies and projects. The analysis showed the main economic drivers to be the ore grade and resin loading. The resin loading is impacted by the prevalence of competing ions, especially chloride. At resin-in-pulp solution chloride concentrations below 3 g/L and uranium grade below 640 g/t U3O8, resin-in-pulp is more economical, whereas at chloride concentrations above 3 g/L, direct precipitation is more economical.

"Beneficiation of low grade ores is the process of increasing the grade of a mineral through unit operations that remove and separate the waste (or gangue) material from the valuable mineral that can then be used for further processing or direct use. Important factors when deciding upon a beneficiation program are the feed grade, mass yield and the metal recovery. As lower grade ores are being processed beneficiation is a critical process. How predictive is laboratory test work for “as built” operating projects? Beneficiation includes all or some of the available unit operations to produce a beneficiation flow sheet i.e. associated unit operations including but not limited to optical sorting, radiometric sorting, crushing and screening, coarse cobbing, jigging, dense media separation (DMS), spirals, magnetic separation, flotation, thickening, filtering and drying. Reference to specific projects and the approach developed in formulating a beneficiation flow sheet and a comparison of difficult and simple beneficiation flow sheets are cited. INTRODUCTIONReserves of high-grade iron ores are reducing all over the world, at an alarming rate, over the years as a result of the rapid increase in demand for steel particularly from Japan and then China. The recovery of mineral value from the low-grade ores using present technology is more expensive than DSO ores due to high energy and capital costs. Beneficiation is defined as a variety of processes whereby extracted ore from mining is reduced to particles that can be separated into mineral and waste.Various physical properties of an ore can be exploited to separate a low grade fraction including variation in hardness, density, reflectance, conductivity and magnetism.""Beneficiation"" of iron ores includes concentration, generally by physical removal of unwanted gangue. Also considered beneficiation is the regulation of product size, or other steps such as agglomeration to improve its chemical or physical characteristics prior to smelting."

"Excess Gibbs energy is a thermodynamic parameter which quantifies the difference between the value of the Gibbs energy for a real mixture and that for an ideal mixture. More specifically the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of a species (i) in a mixture is indicated by the change in the overall excess Gibbs energy of the solution as the number of moles of species (i) changes while keeping temperature, pressure and the number of moles of all other species in the solution constant. Generally it is obtained from the activity coefficient which in turn can be obtained for a species in a mixture using a variety of models. The most widely used method is to use UNIFAC. Flotation is probably the most important process in the concentration of minerals and requires the use of reagents such as collectors and frothers. There is abundant experimental data which illustrates that collectors of different alkyl chain lengths will change the contact angle and that frothers of different structures and molecular weights will result in changes in key flotation properties such as froth behavior, surface tension and critical coalescence concentration. In this paper it is shown that there is a strong linear relationship between measured parameters such as froth volume/height, surface tension, critical coalescence concentration and contact angle and the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of the molecules used. Proposals are made to explain these correlations.INTRODUCTIONAs is well known froth flotation is arguably the most widely used process in the separation of minerals. In broad terms the process relies on the use of reagents known as collectors to adsorb onto a mineral surface and thus render the mineral particle hydrophobic. Alkyl thiolates are very commonly used for this purpose. The hydrophobicity is induced as a result of the alkyl group’s molecular structural properties which results in it forming a non-ideal mixture with the process water. Surfactants (or frothers) are typically alcohols and are known to lower the surface tension of the system and also inhibit bubble coalescence and reduce bubble size. Since alcohols are polar they will also form a non-ideal mixture with water. The hydrophobic mineral attaches to the bubble and rises to the froth phase where the valuable mineral is recovered as a concentrate. Frothers have often been characterized using the so-called HLB (hydrophobic-lipophilic balance) number but recently it was shown that the use of activity coefficients (?) or excess Gibbs energy (G ex ), which is calculated using equation (1) is a much more appropriate way to describe the behavior of these reagents in non-ideal mixtures with water (Corin and O’Connor, 2014)."

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. "Heap leaching is an attractive process for low grade deposits where the metal content of ore does not justify the high cost of milling and agitated leaching. In general, the heap leaching capital cost is low, construction is rapid, and production costs are low. The primary disadvantage of heap leaching is low recoveries (typically 65% of agitated leach recovery); thus, recovery improvements could convert more lower-grade deposits into minable reserves. This will also allow to process primary sulfide ores and result in a dramatic expansion of the technology, as ~80% of total ore types are sulfidic in nature. The old gold operations tailings are another massive source of low-grade gold material that can be retreated by the heap leach process. The major parameters affecting the recovery rates are ore characteristics (mineralogy, particles size of metal and host minerals, ore permeability), and operational conditions (segregation of ore, compaction, leach cycle time, lift height, and solution application rates). The design of a percolation leach process is based on a limited number of coarse ore bottle roll and/or column tests under ideal conditions. The economics of the projects and engineering design of the process facilities are developed based on the bench scale test work results and the application of the conventional engineering scale up factors. This paper will deal with the parameters affecting the HL efficiencies and focus on the potential improvement of gold heap leach recoveries. This would include design of heap leach operation and evaluation of processes such as fine crushing and bioleaching.INTRODUCTION Gold heap leaching is a hydrometallurgical process designed to treat amenable low-grade gold ores that contain typically 0.5 to 1.5 g/t gold (Marsden and House, 2006; Wong Wai Leong and Mujumdar, 2010). Ore is stacked by various types of equipment on an impermeable barrier, and a sodium cyanide solution is applied to the surface of the stacked ore. Gold, silver, and other metals contained in the ore are dissolved to various degrees by the cyanide application, as it percolates downward through the stack of the ore. The pregnant leach solution (PLS) is then collected at the bottom of the heap. The PLS is then sent to the gold recovery plant where the metals are extracted. The barren leach solution (BLS) is then reapplied to the top of the pad. Ore is placed on a pad or previously leached lift by various means, including ramp conveyor belts, radial-arm and self-leveling stackers, and trucks. Once trucks are used to construct the pads, the pad can be compacted and hence the pad should be graded and ripped or scarified (roughened up) with wheeled or tracked equipment to produce shallow cuts to increase surface area exposure to the leachate."

WHAT I would like to do is to talk for a while tonight about the Canadian mining industry in wartime-at least, the Canadian mining industry as viewed through the eyes of the Metals Controller. There is nothing quite like the Canadian system in the system of controls in the United States, because the Canadian Controller combines the functions of a good many of the organizations here. I think the nearest counterpart would be the Divisional Chiefs of the WPB-although they have perhaps less authority and operate in a somewhat narrower field. My own field, as you know, is the metals and minerals-all of them, as a matter of fact, with the exception of steel and iron and coal and oil. And as I am responsible for supplies not only from domestic sources but also from foreign sources, I exercise most of the functions of the WPB and some of the functions of the Board of Economic Warfare. As my department is also responsible for stock-piling and for the financing of new operations, I therefore exercise some of the functions of the Metals Reserve and also of the Defense Plants Corporation. Being an administrator under the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, I also have the same function in relation w the price of metals as the OP A. The Canadian system of controls is compact, relatively simple, and I believe reasonably efficient. I think two of the reasons for that are that both the Controllers and the Directors of production are clothed with very wide authority, and also the fact that all the buying for the three arms of the service is done through the Department of Munitions and Supply, of which we are a part.

"Discontinuum Mechanics is based on two foundations: the idealization of the internal structure of substances, and the principle of the arithmetic mean value. For a linear discontinuum, the methods of Crystallography are used to describe their structure, in which nodes stands for the position of the homologous points such as molecules, grains, or any other motif. The principle of the mean value states that the value of any discrete function at a node is equal to the arithmetic average of the values of this function at the neighboring nodes. This principle leads to an elliptical linear differential equation of the second order, with coefficients given by the statistical second moments of the Cartesian components of the metric vector. As long as those coefficients are components of a symmetric second-order tensor, there are three mutually perpendicular directions, in which the variances reach their extreme values and the covariances are zero, showing that the mean value principle transforms the discontinuum into a statistically equivalent orthotropic continuum.The application of Discontinuum Mechanics to linear rock masses is simple and direct. It is sufficient to define the motif as the plane of geological discontinuity, and the metric vector as the normal vector to this plane, whose magnitude is the spacing between two consecutive planes belonging to the same set of discontinuities. Furthermore, heterogeneities of rock masses can be also included in this description by substituting the plane of discontinuity by a zone of weakness. In this way, the magnitude of the normal vector results from the product of the spacing and the RQD or the RMR. In going further in this theory, at least three conclusions show up. First, in the evaluation of rock masses, it is necessary to determine the orientation, spacing, and RMR for each set of discontinuities. Second, the conventional method of finding the principal families from the contours of equal concentration of poles on the stereographic projection excluding the spacing does not have any physical meaning. Third, any problem of rock mechanics can be solved in a rigorous and reliable way by integrating the differential equation of the mean value."

The mine is accessed from Lac du Bonnet which is linked to the provincial road system.Brief Description of OperationTantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining, and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Daily campaigned crushing of the tantalum and lithium ores supply separate concentration circuits. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity equipment together with recently developed centrifugal concentration methods. All tantalum concentrates go to Cabot Performance Materials for the production of tantalum chemicals and metal. Lithium minerals are recovered using heavy medium separation and silicate flotation to produce spodumene and montebrasite/amblygonite concentrates. The lithium concentrates are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock for the recently built on-site chemical plant dedicated to tl1e production of cesium formate, a high-density drilling fluid for use in the oil industry."

"Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) has become the mainstream technology for ultra-heavy oil recovery in Xinjiang oilfield, the success of which depends heavily on shortening of preheating period as well as forming homogeneous and highly permeable zone in land-facies oilsands layer. Towards this aim a special hydraulic fracturing process is required, which is accomplished through controlled water injection to a pair of horizontal wells in order to create homogenously distributed microcracks in the zone between the two wells. The associated mechanical response, however, is unclear for land-facies Karamay oilsands that is loose in texture. In this regard, this research utilizes a triaxial test system on cylindrical specimens extracted from field-collected oilsands cores. Isotropically consolidated drained triaxial compression tests are conducted on both saturated and unsaturated specimens so as to investigate the mechanical response of oilsands at different spots relative to the wellbore. Moreover, acoustic emission and fast pulse-decay permeability are performed to monitor fracture development and permeability evolution. Based on these experimental studies, the mechanism of dilation in oilsands is comprehensively analyzed. The findings reveal distinctive behavior between the saturated and unsaturated specimens as respect to dilation, porosity/volumetric evolution and change of permeability. It is also found that shear bands can be created upon shearing on triaxial specimens, rendering porosity or volumetric strain the factor that is more proper for evaluation of stimulation efficiency in the field.INTRODUCTIONXinjiang oilfield is widely known for its abundant deposit of heavy and ultra-heavy oil that has been estimated to be several hundred million tons. The ultra-heavy oil deposit located in Fengcheng region of Karamay at the northwestern part of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, has over 360 million tons of resource (Yuan et al. 2013). The resource is deposited in depths from 180 to 450 m and has viscosity over 100, 000 mPa•s at a temperature of 50ºC, bringing technical challenges to recovery activities."

The iron- and elemental sulphur-rich residues generated during batch and continuous pressure oxidative leaching of Inco Limited's Voisey's Bay nickel sulphide concentrate at 150°C in sulphate-chloride media have been characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The residues produced during the continuous leaching of the pentlandite- and pyrrhotite-rich concentrate consisted predominantly of hematite and elemental sulphur, with minor amounts of goethite. Although the iron species generated in the batch leaching tests were similar to those formed during continuous leaching, the morphologies of the hematite and goethite particles were significantly different. In addition to the tiny spheroids and bubble-like particles, the hematite and goethite generated during batch leaching occurred as larger "hollow" shell-like particles that contained residual pentlandite or sulphur cores. Although the leach solution from which the iron oxides had precipitated contained 5-15 g/L sodium, sodium jarosite was detected only in trace amounts in a few of the leach residues.

It is designed to produce a metallurgical coking coal by lowering the sulphur and ash content of the raw coal using a heavy-media cycloning process to treat deslimed crushed coal, with scavenging of fine coal by flotation from the primary minus-28-mesh screen product. A secondary H-M cyclone scavenges a thermal-grade coal from the primary H-M cyclone tailing.

This paper gives an overview of the various strands of postgraduate and undergraduate training offered in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT. Since 2003 the Department is offering a formal postgraduate MSc programme in hydrometallurgical engineering aimed especially at graduate work-based engineers, with 5 weeks of intensive course work plus a research dissertation on a work-related project. This programme has now run 5 times over the years and produced some 20 degrees. The paper reflects on the experiences with running the course, especially the difficulties experienced with supervising industry-based external students. Furthermore, through the Department a graduate training program is offered for all junior metallurgists at a major South African minerals company. This 2-year program, which is currently on its 12th cohort, offers 1 or 2 week intensive blocks of course work alternating with longer stints where the candidates are based at various operations. Although primarily focussed on minerals processing, it has a significant element of hydrometallurgy in it and in recent years an advanced hydrometallurgy stream has been introduced. The paper reflects on the development of the program over the years, the benefits it has provided to the company as well as some of the challenges that remain. Finally the paper gives an overview of hydrometallurgy related undergraduate and research-only postgraduate MSc and PhD projects at the university. Some emphasis is placed on the recently launched South African Minerals and Metals Research Initiative (SAMMRI), a joint government-industry programme to support university-based research in the area of applied metallurgy.

Successful technology commercialization occurs when a company is focused on creating shareholder value by providing a reliable product at a price point attractive to the market, while at the same time maintaining strict control of its internal cash burn rates. Developing a technology platform and a market platform are equally important in the commercialization of new technologies such as fuel cells. This paper will discuss some of the key barriers that may prevent successful market entry for emerging and disruptive technologies, such as: R&D priorities, supply chain / manufacturing issues, materials, cost reduction strategies, customer needs, developing a market pull strategy, institutional barriers such as existing regulatory/approvals processes and/or current design/purchasing practices, product reliability and resilience, and finding the right path to market. SDTC is an arms length foundation that aims to financially support the successful market entry of emerging and disruptive technologies that can provide significant environmental benefits to Canada. The fuel cell industry, which represents one such technology, is at a critical point in its evolution where market receptivity and the technology platform are converging to potentially create significant customer advantages for fuel cell products being developed today. Since its inception in 2001, SDTC has received over 850 business cases from which it has identified successful strategies to overcome the noted barriers to commercialization. While maintaining commercial confidentiality, the SDTC database will be mined to: Identify specific success stories that have overcome various barriers and discuss their strategy; Identify specific fuel cell related industry experiences that hinder successful market uptake. The general attributes and trends of successful technology developments identified in this paper will hopefully provide guidance to technology developers and prepare them to successfully tackle the next set of hurdles on the path to commercializing their technology, once they have proven their technology works in the laboratory.

"The Pierre Beauchemin gold deposit, situated 15 km NW of Rouyn-Noranda, produces an average of 1050 tonnes of ore a day. Reserves are 1.2 Mt grading 5.6 g/t Au. The deposit, located in a shear zone within the Flavrianpluton, in the Blake River Group, is hosted by four major rock types: meta-trondhjemite, meta-tonalite, hybrid rocks and meta-diorite (the prefu; ""meta-"" is omitted thereafter). The trondhjemite, tonalite, and metamorphic hybrid rocks are spatially distributed as a series of sub-horizontal tabular sills that form a genetically related group. Early fractures that permitted either the emplacement of pre-diorite felsic dikes or the formation of a visible alteration caused by early fluid circulation might have been developed in response to initial strain created during regional deformation. These fractures were precursors to the emplacement of diorite and the development of major shear planes. Sub-horizontal north-trending en échelon diorite lenses are observed at the mine. Together, these diorite lenses constitute larger scale diorite zones which are observed at the scale of the pluton. The diorite zones are interpreted as evidence of an episode of sub-vertical extension sustained by the layered trondhjemite, tonalite and hybrid system. The anisotropy created by the less competent sub-horizontal en échelon diorite was an important factor. In shear zone development and subsequent mineralization. The tonalite and diorite accommodated further defomation and developed the main N030°/40° ESE shears along with the spatially associated N060°/50°-60° SSE, and the N000°/10°-40° E shear zones. The N000° shears are interpreted as refracted or deflected equivalents of the N030° shears. The combined shears compose the Eldrich shear system which trends approximately N030°/40° ESE and has had a general reverse movement with a minor sinistral component.Gold mineralization occurs in all four major rock types as en échelon sigmoidal shaped lenses associated with the major N030° deformation system. The distribution of ore lenses can be divided into two categories: The first category occupies sub-horizontal diorite zones. The lenses trend N-S, dip 100 40° E, and are associated with shear zones, sub-horizontal fractures or tonalite-diorite contact planes. The second category of lenses is found in felsic granitic rocks; the lenses trend either N0300!40°ESE or N060°/50°-60° SSE. Local hydraulic breccia zones are observed near ore zones occupying felsic granitic rocks. These breccias may have resulted from high fluid pressures brought upon by confinement as a result of impermeable zones in an anisotropic tonalite-diorite system."

This paper discusses the relative merits of alternating-current versus direct-current testing, pointing out the advantages in size and cost of equipment and more definitive results achieved through the use of D.C. General principles of direct-current high-volt-age testing, types of testing, methods of performing the actual test and interpreting the results are explained. ?The value of insulation resistance measurements and their relationship to high-voltage testing is discussed. Pinpointing the physical location of a cable defect using a fault locator or thumper is described. Reference is made to several organizations that have effected considerable savings with high-voltage test programs. YOU have been kind enough to ask me to speak to you on "The War and Anglo-American Relations." A speaker always takes the liberty of putting his own interpretation on the scope of his subject. I am going to exercise that privilege, and try to look back over a generation of Anglo-American relationships and forward beyond the present war. I should like particularly to consider responsibilities as well as relationships. A more accurate caption for what I am going to say would be "Anglo-American Responsibilities.?? THE WAR WILL BE WON I am assuming that sooner or later we shall win this war. History and economics point to the same conclusion, that Germany has attempted the impossible and that the seeds of defeat are already sown. As to one ecof1:omic factor, I am already on public record as believing that Germany's oil supply is inadequate for the war she has launched. That opinion is unchanged. Aside from such tangible factors, moreover, I am convinced that the spirit of freedom is unquenchable, and that no combination of powers will be able to rout it from the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Stronger even than this conviction is my faith in a God who will not suffer the defeat of man's aspiration to be master of his own soul. I am sure that all of you share that faith, and that we need not argue it. We can start with the assumption that the war will end in victory. The subject we are to consider, then, is the relationship of the English-thinking peoples during the conflict, and their joint responsibilities in the difficult days that will follow it. A CANADIAN-AMERICAN No talk on such a subject is worth listening to unless the audience knows the background and fundamental beliefs of the speaker. No human statement stands alone; behind and beside and within it are the ideals and the bias of the man who makes it. Because I am a stranger to most of you, I am constrained to talk about myself before I talk about more important matters. The review may be profitable, not because of the subject, but because it may illustrate the evolution of an attitude toward England.
