"AT PRESENT, it is not certain that any of the sulphide de in the Province of Nova Scotia attain the lower grade limit of 60 per cent sulphides over the minimum area of 1,000 square feet suggested as cut-off specifications for inclusion in this Symposium. However, several of them do include massive sections of substantial size and others represent concentrations of sulphide material that are well above average. It is felt, therefore, that a tentative classification of the deposits and presentation of their geological settings are justified and may help round out the genetic aspects of this study. Accordingly, data considered to be the most pertinent are assembled here in the event that some may fit into larger-scale patterns of mineralization that may take shape as a result of this investigation.The three principal massive sulphide deposits in Nova Scotia are the Stirling, the Smithfield, and the Walton. The locations of these are shown on the accompanying key-map (Figure 1).Three other deposits, the locations of which are also indicated on the map, are the Meat Cove, Rocky Brook, and Gays River de¬posits. Although these fall far short of the minimum dimensions and grade specifications referred to above they are singled out because they have received more than passing attention and are illustrative of the mineralization types to which they belong."

"In January 1974, the Minerals Division of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. made the strategic decision to add uranium to its active exploration commodities and through compilation studies selected northern Saskatchewan as the most attractive and cost-effective exploration area in Canada. In August 1974, 100 sq. miles were staked adjacent to Gulf Minerals' Rabbit Lake deposit and east of the Esso Minerals Midwest boulder train. Initial exploration was based on geologic models of the Rabbit Lake deposit.In the summer of 1975, surface surveys delineated radon anomalies which were drilled that winter and found to overlie anomalous concentrations of uranium in the regolith which forms the upper unit of the crystalline basement. Within the crystalline basement, one hole intersected graphite and pyrite with anomalous nickel-cobalt-arsenic. Geochemical and radiometric surveys followed in the summer of 1976. Drilling in the winter of 1977 intersected several zones of graphite and also anomalous, but uneconomic, uranium abundances. Also in 1977, Dahlkamp and Tan (1977) described the coincidence of graphite and uranium at Key Lake and ground EM surveys on CanadianOxy claims detected graphite conductors beneath 250 ft of Athabasca sandstone. Inco Limited joined the project in April 1977 as a 50% partner. The project area was then surveyed using the airborne INPUT EM method, which detected 84 miles of conductors, with associated graphitic metasediments. On the ground these were located with MaxMin surveys, and follow-up drilling located the ""Tent"" Lake uranium zone.In 1978, the Midwest and Dawn Lake discoveries were announced, 7 miles and 2 miles west of the Joint Venture (J.V.) claims; and, in part for this reason, the 1979 winter drilling was concentrated on the deeper west side of the property. Exploration hole 102-79 intersected altered and uraniferous rocks, but stepout holes were barren. Drill hole 153-79 tested an under-snow three-station radon anomaly east of hole 102-79 and intersected 33 feet of 7.51 % U3O8, confirming the disco very of the McClean North zone. The geophysical grid of the McClean North conductor system was extended and detailed a strong, continous conductor to the south, called McClean South. This was drilled in January 1980and hole 1004-80intersected 22 feet of 2.95% U3O8."

"The Murray Brook precious metal (Au, Ag) gossan deposit is one of nine supergene mineral deposits that have developed over polymetallic massive sulfide deposits in the Bathurst Camp of New Brunswick. Reserves consist of 1.9 Mt of gossan containing 1.53 g/t Au and 65.9 g/t Ag. The supergene zone at Murray Brook consists of six distinct units: a) altered massive sulfide, b) pyrite-quartz sand, c) massive sulfide gossan, d) disseminated sulfide gossan, e) ferruginized wallrock, and f) leached bedrock. The massive sulfide gossan constitutes the main body of economic mineralization and consists of goethite, primary quartz, secondary amorphous silica, K-Fe-Pb-As- Sb-Ag hydrated sulfate and oxide minerals (beudantite, plumbojarosite, jarosite, bindheimite, scorodite), trace cinnabar, and cassiterite of primary origin. The order of stability of sulfide minerals during oxidation was pyrite _ arsenopyrite _ galena _ Bi-Sb sulfosalts _ chalcopyrite _ tetrahedrite group _ sphalerite.Two mass balance techniques (isovolumetric and conservative element) indicate elemental depletion in gossan relative to primary ore in the order: S>Cd=Zn>Cu=Mn>Na=Ca>Fe=Al=V> Mg= K=Se=Hg>Pb>Ti>Ag>Mo=P>Ba; and enrichment in the order Au>As>Sb>Si>Bi. Tin, as cassiterite, is conservative.Mineralogic and paleomagnetic data suggest that the gossan deposit formed under a warm temperate climate throughout the Pliocene. The rate of oxidation and the compositional nature of the ore was significantly influenced by: a) the position of the primary sulfide zone in a downward moving hydrological system, b) primary sulfide composition and zonation that promoted the development of a strong electrochemical oxidation system, and c) pronounced intercalation of carbonate and sphalerite mineralization in sulfide zones, which promoted rapid development of secondary porosity, permeability and downward flow of oxygenated groundwater.During progressive oxidation and physico-chemical erosion of the gossan zone, Au was transported downward in groundwaters, probably as a Auo colloid complex, to be concentrated in the lower horizons of the gossan profile. The precipitation of Au was greatly increased in the pyrite/arsenopyrite zones. Gold concentration was multi-cyclic with continual dissolution and nucleation of the metal until final concentration in the void structures of the gossan. Leaching experiments and microprobe analyses indicate that Au is present in the gossan as submicron composite sols of Au-Ag-silica."

Particle shape characterisation has an important role to play in mineral processing, to clarify effects of shape on rheology, equipment wear rates, comminution, classification, sizing and flotation. However in industry, shape characterisation is not routine, and the most commonly used shape descriptor in the field (circularity/ angularity/ sphericity) is not invariant. This study aims to investigate shape measurements for a fine particulate ore sample measured with different analytical devices. Two Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy devices with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (FEI QEMSCAN® and Zeiss Mineralogic®), and a camera based image-sizer using dynamic image analysis (Retsch CAMSIZER® XT) were compared. Each device was used to analyse the shape characteristics of specific particles in both a coarse sample (–212/+150 µm) and a fine sample (-53 µm) of UG2 platinum ore. Circularity and Roundness frequency distributions obtained from the three devices were then compared. For selected individual particles, circularity showed higher variability than roundness, and the sample circularity distributions obtained by the three devices were completely different. It is clear that circularity data from different studies relying on different devices should not be compared on an absolute scale. The shape parameter roundness was found to be a more robust descriptor than circularity, and it can give a stronger indication of a particulate sample’s shape characteristics on an absolute scale. However, there were still significant differences in the roundness measurements obtained by the CAMSIZER XT and the two Auto-SEM devices, which was attributed to the dissimilar mechanisms of image capture.

"Chromite ore is one of the essential raw materials for ferroalloy and steel industry. Boula-Nuasahi belt of Sukinda region, Odisha, is the only resource of chrome ore in India. The Indian deposits are typically characterized as ferruginous and siliceous type ores. Chrome ore is generally mined by open cast mechanized mining method in these areas. The run-off-mine (ROM) ore from the various mines is sent to beneficiation plant via stack yard for further up gradation. The chrome ore beneficiation plant (COB) has two major circuits: comminution (feed preparation) circuit and beneficiation circuit. In the comminution circuit, the ore is reduced to <1 mm size ( for complete liberation of chromite) from -220 mm size in stage wise crushing (primary and secondary crusher) followed by screening and single stage grinding in a ball mill. Fraction having size <1 mm is further upgraded in the beneficiation circuit to produce three different concentrates having specific chemical composition and Cr: Fe ratio. The beneficiation plant is a complex circuit comprising of combination of unit operations (spiral concentrator, Floatex density separator, hydrocyclone, wet shaking tables). In the recent years the overall performance efficiency (grade and recovery) of the beneficiation circuit got affected with numerous changes in the run-off-mine ore quality (physical and chemical), mineralogical composition, etc.In this article, attempts made for improving the performance of chrome ore beneficiation circuit is discussed. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered while the process were also highlighted. The results of the trials has shown an improvement in the performance of the cyclone (d50 : 56 µm – 40 µm) and chromite losses into tailing to <12%.INTRODUCTIONChromite has a wide range of application, from refractories to metallurgical industries, and from chemical to non-ferrous alloy industries. Chromium ore (Fe2+, Mg) [Cr, Al, Fe3+]2O4) occurs exclusively in rocks formed by the intrusion and solidification of molten lava or magma which is very rich in the heavy, iron containing minerals such as pyroxene and olivine. With the richness of silica and iron, the chrome ores are broadly classified as siliceous type and ferruginous type. Pure chromite with composition FeCr2O4 is rare because magnesium usually substitutes for ferrous ion and aluminum and ferrous ion substitutes for chromium. Generally the associated gangue minerals are talc, quartz, hematite, goethite, limonite, gabro, serpentine, anorthosite, dunite, pyroxinite, etc. Around 96% of the chromite ore production is consumed for metallurgical applications of which 94% is converted into different grades of ferrochrome i.e., high carbon ferrochrome and charge chrome as shown in Figure 1. Stainless steel being the leading consumer of ferrochrome, any change in the dynamics of the stainless steel industry impacts overall chrome ore demands significantly."

Underground tests of slusher cables at first might seem to be quite simple and inexpensive. They do, however, take a long time and give results that may be ambiguous and unreliable. Also, because underground test conditions are not exactly duplicable, tests carried out at different times or in different mines could not be compared. An attempt was made to develop a laboratory test method that would provide for all factors affecting slusher cable performance underground in such a way as to make it possible to achieve comparable results from different series of tests by exactly duplicating test conditions. Such a method should also make it possible to vary individual factors systematically in order to give a proper assessment of the effect of changing conditions on cable performance. A set of tests, comparing the same two types of cable both underground and in the laboratory, is described. "The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth&apos;s crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonicmagmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonicallycontrolled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian platform, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu mineralization. It does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."

"This paper describes the automation of Kiena's grinding circuit which comprises an open SAG mill circuit and a closed ball mill circuit with two stages of hydrocyclones. The circuit has been instrumented according to a two level control strategy.The regulatory control strategy is implemented in an industrial controller. This controller does data filtering and calculation (flowrate and solid content) and regulates the pump box levels (2), the water additions: or the pulp percent solids (4) and the fresh ore feed rate.The supervisory control calculates for the industrial controller, the fresh ore feed rate setpoint and the pulp percent solids setpoints in order to optimize the grinding circuit operation. It is made of two modules, one for data filtering and one for control optimization. The filtering program uses modern tools to adjust the measured value and estimate missing data (dynamic material balance, on line estimation of model parameter, etc.). The control program acts as an expert system which combines the benefits of model-based control and rule-based control. A multivariable predictive controller (DMC) is used to maintain the circulating load and the hydrocyclones feed percent solids (which is correlated to particle size) while the rule-based control validates the previous output, detects and avoids the SAG overloads and sump pumps overflows.The system has been operating since MAY 1992 and the benefits obtained are discussed.INTRODUCTIONIn 1990, Les Mines d'Or Kiena decided to go ahead with a project for automating its grinding circuit as proposed by the Centre de recherché minerals (CRM). Its objectives in doing so were to marginally increase production capacity (1 % ) and to create a new challenge for plant staff. The main stages of the project, which involved CRM, Kiena Mines and a consultant, are shown in Table 1. The project was completed in May 1992 with the implementation of a supervisory control system. This text describes the main features of the system with a special focus on its most innovative aspects."

"The effect of the quenching rate on age hardening in an Al-6.0mass%Zn-0.75mass%Mg alloy sheet was investigated. The quenching rates and aging conditions were as follows: water quenching (WQ) or furnace cooling (FC) followed by pre-aging at 20°C,then artificial aging at 120, 160 or 200°Cwere performed. The peak strength of the FC and the WQ are very similarat120°C aging. It is important high strength was obtained even at the extremely slow quenching rate. On the other hand, the strength of the WQ significantly decreased compared to the FCat200°C aging. GP(I) zones were formed during the pre-aging at 20°C even if the cooling rate was very slow like the FC, and were transformed into the GP(II) ones at 70°C or higher and then into the ?’ phase. However, these zones were dissolved by reversion during heating to 200°C. Thus the strength of the WQ decreased. On the other hand, it is considered that an unknown cluster or GP zone with a thermal stability formed during the FC was not dissolved up to 200°C and was transformed into the ?’ phase. Therefore, a higher strength was obtained in the FC for the200°Caging.INTRODUCTIONAl-Zn-Mg alloys are widely available in commercial production because these alloy have lower quench sensitivity and can be produced by air cooling (AC). Heat treatable aluminum alloys are usually produced by water quenching (WQ) to increase their strength because a high cooling rate inhibits the precipitation of the stable phase during cooling and increases supersaturated solute atoms. However, Baba(1967)reported the strength of an Al-6%Zn-1.8%Mg(mass%) alloy without additional elements quenched by very slow cooling (15°C/min) was 96% of that quenched by WQ. Furthermore,the age hardening at room temperature (RT) occurs after annealing at 410°C followed by furnace cooling (FC, 0.5ºC/min or less)in these alloys. Therefore, the process of annealing at 410 to 430°C for 120 min followed by AC, and reheating at 230°C for 240 min, then cooling is recommended in the specifications (Japan Aluminum Association, 2011). Matsuda and Yoshida(1996)also recommended annealing at 300°C for Al-Zn-Mg alloy extruded products to inhibit age hardening at RT by precipitating the solute atoms and decreasing them in the matrix. It has been considered that the higher the content of excess quenched-in vacancy becomes by WQ, the higher aging rate at RT is obtained. Therefore,it is theoretically and commercially important to clarify the reason why the age hardening occurs relatively quickly in almost no excess quenched-in vacancies such as the FC, and why the same strength as the WQ can be obtained in the FC"

The Mineral King Mine, owned and operated by Sheep Creek Mines is located in the Purcell mountain range of southeastern British Columbia. Production of lead and zinc concentrates commenced in 1954 some 60 years after the initial discovery. Low cost mining methods have been employed to extract 16,0C'O tons of ore monthly from large ore bodies formed by replacement in limestone. Extensive areas in the limestone are yet to be explored and success in the search for new ore bodies is anticipated.

"The mining and processing of mineral ores is a very old industry which is steeped in tradition. Rising demand for metals has recently forced the exploitation of lower-grade orebodies which require extensive beneficiation. The high capital expenditures involved, together with market pressures for high-quality concentrates and pellets, have forced the development of new process technologies which are heavily dependent on automatic process control. Development of suitable instrumentation has been rapid and it is being applied to mining processes today with a high degree of sophistication. The drive for higher efficiency and profitability goes on and has reached a level at which modern digital computers appear to be the only answer. However, the efficient application of a digital process computer is extremely complicated and is therefore approached by the mining industry with considerable hesitation.Some of the benefits promised by the digital computer can be obtained today by other means, which are more manageable and can provide immediate payoff. The result would be a building-block system which would utilize the digital process computer as its final component, to perform true plant optimization, free from routine chores."

"Over the past five years, contributions from geologists and mining engineers were instrumental in the successful development of MEPS. It is a system of FORTRAN programs specifically designed to be used by mining personnel to solve geological and mining problems. MEPS is a flexible keyword-driven system. Extensive error editing procedures significantly reduce the time required to proceed from problem recognition to solution. Possibly the most attractive feature of MEPS is that computer solutions may be guided or selectively modified to obtain desired solutions. Some highlights of MEPS are:1. Vocabulary that is familiar to mining people.2. Geological data storage and retrieval.3. Statistical analysis and variograms.4. Contour maps of assays and geological horizons.5. Trend surface analysis with residual evaluation.6. Ore reserve calculations.7. Open-pit mine design.8. Marginal profitability calculations on pit walls.9. Production scheduling.10. Vertical cross-section plots indicating pit outlines, ore grade contours and selected geological horizons."

Introduction In view of the fact that, during the past year, two Manitoba mines-Flin Fion and Sherritt Gordon-have entered the list of producers and have materially increased that Province&apos;s contribution to the metal production of the Dominion, it would seem appropriate at this time to review the progress of the industry in the Province, with particular reference to the out-standing metal-mining developments of the past decade. That these two mines have been able to continue their operations in spite of the low prices of copper and zinc adds a touch of brightness to the industrial life of the Province. Depression in metal prices is not encouraging to the mining industry, but it does stimulate efficiency in methods and costs of production. As two thriving towns have grown around the two mines, the will of the management to carry-on is of great consequence to Manitoba, this year so hard hit by the .agricultural depression. And, much as it is a pleasant feature in the mining situation that these mines have been able to continue operations, nevertheless it must be noted, in reviewing the mining developments of the past few years in Manitoba, that the Province was fortunate enough to profit by good times, in that an industry was established which gives evidence of permanency. In the metallic field, the section of Manitoba that first received attention from prospectors was the boundary district, west of the Lake of the Woods. Several claims were staked here at the time of the gold boom in the neighbouring Ontario area. But the first real interest in metalliferous deposits dates from the discovery of gold in March, 1911, in quartz veins on the shores of Rice lake, some twenty miles east of lake Winnipeg. Systematic and organized prospecting of the pre-Cambrian areas of the Province may be said to have commenced with that discovery. The first gold discovery in northern Manitoba was made at Wekusko (Herb) lake in 1914. This was followed by the discovery of the Flin Flan and Mandy copper ore-bodies in 1915 on Flin Fion and Schist lakes, respectively.

Introduction The development of uranium deposits is a relatively recent phase of mining in Canada. To date, the only producer of uranium ores on a commercial scale has been the Port Radium mine on Great Bear lake, N.W.T. However, with.-in the past few years intensive prospecting has been carried on throughout Canada and many occurrences of uranium-bearing minerals have been discovered. Eldorado has been active in the search for and the exploration of uranium deposits in Canada for a longer period than any other company and has, therefore, accumulated a considerable fund of information, especially about occurrences in Saskatchewan and in the Northwest Territories along the western fringe of the Precambrian Shield. The Company has also had experience in the underground operation, and in the mining, of uranium ores at Port Radium. During the past year or so many requests have been received from the prospecting and mining fraternity for information and guidance regarding the development of the many new uranium discoveries that have been made in Canada. Assistance by Eldorado is freely given whenever possible and this paper is presented to supplement the private discussions and to provide as wide a distribution as possible of the data acquired by Eldorado.

The Jabiluka One and Two uranium deposits occur in Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Cahill Formation, which is part of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the East Alligator River area, Nothern Territory. The Jabiluka One deposit coincides with a "window" through unconformably overlying Middle Proterozoic sandstone of the Kombolgie Formation; Jabiluka Two is completely covered by that sandstone. The observed part of the Cahill Formation exhibits four horizons which are favourable hosts for uranium mineralization. These have been folded into an east-southeast-striking, gently plunging, open asymmetric syncline-anticline structure. The host rocks are mainly chlorite and/or graphite schists and their brecciated equivalents which have undergone initial regional prograde metamorphism to the amphibolite facies, then retrograde metamorphism to the greenschist facies. Mineralization consists of pitchblende, mainly filling open spaces and to a lesser extent in disseminated form. Chlorite, pyrite and quartz are commonly associated with the uranium mineralization. A portion of the Jabiluka Two deposit contains economic concentrations of gold. Structural preparation with low-pressure conditions at these sites appears to be the most significant ore control. Genetic hypotheses favour initial deposition in Lower Proterozoic sediments, followed by remobilization during later orogenic events. The deposits bear a marked similarity to some pitchblende deposits in central Canada.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled &apos;The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores&apos;, prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O&apos;Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

They include the Bienfait Mine, the Boundary Dam Mine, the Diplomat Mine, the Luscar Mine and the Coal Valley Mine. The company&apos;s plans/or expansion are also discussed. IntroductionLuscar Ltd. is an Edmonton-based energy company formed in 1967 through an amalgamation of two pioneer coal companies-Mountain Park Collieries and Luscar Coals Ltd. In 1912, Mountain Park Collieries initiated the development of an underground mine in the Coal Branch area of Alberta. This mine necessitated the establishment of a townsite and the provision of rail access. The second operation, Luscar Coals Ltd., was established in 1921 at Luscar, Alberta. This was also an underground operation and required the development of a rail spur and townsite. The product from both mines was used to fuel railway steam locomotives until the 1950&apos;s. The market demand for coal decreased as the use of the diesel locomotive increased, so that these operations were finally closed in 1954. Through the amalgamation of the two companies in 1967, however, Luscar Ltd. was formed to become an active participant in the revival of coal operations. Western Canadian Luscar Ltd. is involved in the exploration, development, production and marketing of coal, coal products, oil and gas. Luscar Ltd. is currently participating in five producing mines (Fig. I). The Diplomat Mine, approximately 125 miles southeast of Edmonton, was in production when it was acquired in 1949 by Luscar Coals Ltd. In 1966, the Bienfait Mine and char plant were added. The Luscar Mine, which is a 50/50 joint venture of Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidation Coal Company of Canada, and is operated by Cardinal River Coals Limited, started production in 1969 on the original Luscar Coals Ltd. mine site. The Boundary Dam Mine was opened in 1974. Both the Bienfait and Boundary Dam operations are located in the lignite coal fields of southeastern Saskatchewan. The most recent addition to the group is the Coal Valley Mine, 40 miles southwest of Edson, Alberta. It commenced commercial production in July, 1978 under the operation of Luscar Stereo (1977) Limited."

"Mercury bearing ore bodies are often treated for the production of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver. The mercury deports either to tailings or is collected during various stages of the extraction process. This paper reviews the relationship between various mercury collection processes and the subsequent management of the mercury by-product or waste. It focuses on mercury removal sequestration including cementation, sulphide precipitation, bulk neutralization, and carbon adsorption. Long term mercury management strategies including third-party stabilization, stabilized mercury co-disposal, secure storage, and mercury recycle are also evaluated. INTRODUCTIONMercury is produced in North America as a by-product of non-ferrous metals processing and from recycling of products such as dental amalgam, fluorescent lamps, and thermometers. Its toxicity is recognized to have significant negative impacts on the environment and human health. As a result, many countries are adopting regulations limiting mercury use and its uncontrolled release.The European Union banned mercury exports in 2011 and the United States will do so in 2013. The export bans aim to prevent mercury use in developing countries for activities such as artisanal small scale gold mining. However, by-product mercury production from the non-ferrous metals industries continues.These factors contribute to an oversupply of mercury and the need to find suitable treatment methods for the long term management and storage of mercury and mercury bearing materials."

Slope problems arise on mining properties from cuts for roads and railroads and from open pits. When it is 'realized that 1,000,000 extra tons of waste may have to be mined as a result of an average slope being reduced by 1 ° it is easy to appreciate that the slope problems connected with open pits are of far greater importance than the others. The type of slope failure that can occur can be classified in different ways. The most useful classification would be one that separates the causes in such a way as to provide a basis for studies to deal with problems of prevention and control. Using this criterion the types of slope failures are classified into four groups.
