Fracture mechanics based techniques are used to gain insight into the phenomenon of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and to develop guidance for avoiding or controlling SCC. From constant extension rate experiments under rising load or rising displacement conditions the susceptibility of high strength steels, aluminum, magnesium and titanium alloys to SCC and hydrogen embrittlement can be assessed. Such tests on pre-cracked specimens are also well suited for studying the mechanisms leading to SCC by employing appropriate models for the degradation of metallic materials which take into account the uptake of atomic hydrogen from the corrosive environment. Measurements of crack growth resistance curves using the crack tip opening displacement as fracture parameter can be compared with simulated R-curves obtained from modeling of the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement. The materials investigated are a high strength steel and a magnesium alloy both exposed to environmental conditions which fostered the uptake of hydrogen.

"One of the major commercially viable secondary sources of rare earths elements (REE) are the ion-adsorption ores, containing 0.05-0.3 wt% rare earth oxides physically adsorbed on the surface of clay minerals formed during weathering of lanthanide-rich rocks. Although ion-adsorption deposits are substantially lower grade than other types of rare earth sources, this is offset by the easier mining and processing costs and the low content of radioactive elements. The conventional extraction route involves ion exchange leaching with monovalent cation solutions (usually ammonium sulphate) under ambient conditions; during the process, the lanthanides are desorbed and transferred into solution, being replaced by the exchange cation. While ammonium ions are known to perform best, there is increased environmental motivation to investigate alternative lixiviants in order to minimize ammonium sulphate impact via reducing its use without considerable loss in rare earth recovery.The objective of the present research was to screen various cations salts (alkaline and alkalineearth metals present as sulphates, chlorides and acetates, respectively) in order to comparatively evaluate lanthanide desorption levels and provide a theoretical base of the observed behaviour. The overall aim is to gain a better understanding of how both cation and anion may affect the overall REE recovery from ores in order to provide alternative processing routes. The distinct exchange capabilities of cations were explained in terms of differences in cation hydration enthalpy within the same group, i.e. Cs+ > NH4 + > K+ > Na+ > Li+ and Ba2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+. For the same cation, it was determined that REE extraction efficiency follows the order sulphate > acetate > chloride, based on dissimilarities in constants of formation values. Various process implications scenarios will be described based on using mixed cations and anion matrices."

"Le rebroyage des concentrés d'hématite en usine (Sidbec-Normines, Port-Cartier) et en laboratoire a été modélisé selon le modèle de Reid (1965).L'effet du pourcentage solide sur la cinétique de broyage a été étudié en usine. La fonction de sélection corrigée (pour tenir compte de l'effet du pourcentage solide sur le temps de rétention) augmente lorsque le pourcentage solide augmente de 80 à 84 pourcent. Cette amélioration est contrebalancée par une augmentation de la quantité de pulpe court-circuitée, à des pourcentages solides supérieurs a 81%. La densité optimum de broyage se situe à 84 pourcent.Comme alternative au mode d'opération actuel, l'assemblage des broyeurs en série plutôt qu'en parallèle a également été simulée. Le moins 44 µm passe alors de 68.1 à 72.5 pourcent, ce qui correspond à une capacité supplémentaire de 32 tonnes à l'heure par broyeur. Ces résultats doivent toutefois être interprétés avec prudence, car la cinétique de broyage n'est généralement pas linéaire lorsque le taux d'alimentation est plus que doublé.IntroductionL'usine de bouletage de Sidbec-Normines Inc. a été décrite par Morimoto (1977), Lévesque et al. Le concentré est broyé de 10 pourcent moins 150 µm (100 mailles) à 65-68 pourcent moins 44 µm (325 mailles), à un pourcentage solide de 78 à 80 pourcent. Cette fragmentation poussée exige une consommation d'énergie de 32 kWh/tonne. Cette énergie est surtout libérée sous forme de chaleur, la pulpe étant déchargée a une température de 68-72° C. II en résulte un milieu de broyage corrosif, et une consommation de boulets élevée, de 3.4 à 4.0 kg / tonne broyée."

In spite of the fact that mining has been more or less active in the northern part of Vancouver island since the late 'nineties', there seems to be a remarkable lack of information regarding the nature and development of the region. Recently the operations at the Old Sport mine of the Coast Copper Company, Limited, and spectacular copper discoveries in the vicinity of Nimpkish lake, have directed the attention of the mining fraternity to the district. The writer spent the summer of 1929 making a reconnaissance examination of the general geology and mining properties of the area between Quatsino sound and Nimpkish lake, and he feels that a short paper describing the nature and mining possibilities of the region should be of interest at this time. A more detailed account of the ?geology and of the mining properties will be published in the forth- coming Summary Report of the Geological Survey. A short paper dealing with the Nimpkish Lake district was presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division, held recently in Vancouver.

This paper describes the trends in recent years in explosives formulated to produce larger blast-hole spacings and over-all lower drilling and blasting costs in hard formations. A consideration of current rotary drilling costs per ft of hole and per ton of muck versus hole diameter indicates that it is now possible that we shall see much further use of lower-energy-content, lower-cost slurries and dry mixes, and larger-diameter and, in many instances, cheaper blast holes. These will be drilled on current or slightly larger blast patterns to yield the same energy input per ton of rock and similar fragmentation at lower costs.

NO. 6 shaft at Dome Mines, Limited, is an internal shaft going down vertically from the sixteenth, or 2,000-ft., level to the twenty-ninth, or 4,000-ft., level, with loading station and sump below this. It is located approximately 4,600 feet east of No. 3 shaft, the latter being Dome's main shaft through which ail ore, men, and material are handled. The decision to sink this shaft was made in May, 1935, and work was commenced almost immediately. To reach the site of the new shaft, 3,100 feet of cross-cutting, and 1,400 feet of slashing to widen existing cross-cuts, was necessary. On account of the long haul and the large amount of material to be handled, trolley haulage was decided upon and installed as soon as possible to facilitate the removal of waste rock from the crosscut and other necessary excavations. Figure 1 shows a cross-section of the cross cut and the manner in which the trolley wire is supported and guarded. For hanging each individual cross-piece, two holes are drilled into the roof and filled with snug-fitting wooden plugs. Into these, %-in. ragged hanger bolts arc driven by means of a stoper. The bolts are of various lengths to allow for irregularities in the face of the rock, and they have sufficient thread to permit several inches of adjustment for proper alignment of the cross-pieces. These hangers are spaced at 8-ft. intervals except at the curves, where 5-ft. spacing is used. A 2 in. by 6 in. cedar plank is fastened to the cross-pieces directly over the centre of the track. To this the trolley-wire supports are bolted, and 1 in. by 10 in. cedar boards are nailed on each side to act as guards. Two power-supply cables, one telephone cable, and one .Y2-in. conduit lighting circuit are also supported on the trolley-wire hangers, as shown in Figure 1. A 20-in. ventilating pipe and a 10-in. air line are placed as shown, thus acting as a guard to prevent workmen from walking on the track.

That way, all resources are generating added value, process control equipments are maintained in an optimal state for best performance, and final product is produced at least cost. Performance monitoring is the only way to ensure that everyone is working on top priorities toward the same goal. How can we add value to these warehouses of data? The data is there and the information is hidden; it is just waiting to be extracted. A process performance monitoring system is able to determine if a loop, a system, a unit, or a plant meets the expected performances. The system prioritizes the areas that need attention. It also provides historical reports of the plant status by areas, by loops, and by identified problems. This information is provided to different categories of users in an appropriate format for each one. The system also includes diagnostics and tools to detect and analyze problems.

"Abstract -The Flat Landing Brook Zn-Pb-Ag deposit of the Bathurst Mining Camp occurs within a narrow thrust-bound nappe containing felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Within the host nappe, the Tetagouche Group is represented by the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the overlying Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Nepisiguit Falls Formation is divided into two members: quartz- and quartz-feldspar-phyric volcaniclastic rocks ± minor lavas (Grand Falls member), and aphyric, fine-grained volcaniclastic rocks (Little Falls member). The Flat Landing Brook Formation consists of aphyric rhyolite flows and interbedded pyroclastic rocks. Several gabbroic intrusions occur in both the footwall and hanging-wall sequences. These gabbros locally cut out the mineralized horizon at shallow levels, and are considered to be feeders to tholeiitic basaltic flows (Forty Mile Brook member) of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Flat Landing Brook deposit has many of the characteristics typical of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occurring within the highly productive Nepisiguit Falls Formation in the eastern part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Mineralization occurs within or at the top of the Grand Falls member and comprises four or more massive to semi-massive sulfide lenses that vary in thickness between 3 and 5 m. Massive lenses are laterally gradational to, or underlain by, zones of disseminated sulfides up to 38 m thick. The deposit contains an estimated resource of 1.7 Mt grading 4.9% Zn, 0.94% Pb, and 19.54 g/t Ag to a depth of approximately 150 m. From 150 to 300 m below surface, mineralization is low grade and mostly disseminated. However, below 300 m, ore-grade (>10% Pb+Zn) massive sulfide lenses have been intersected over mineable widths. Oxide facies iron formation overlies and (or) grades laterally into the sulfide lenses. The oxide facies has strong positive Eu anomalies and gently sloping rare earth element (REE) profiles suggesting that it was formed from relatively hot acidic fluids that had interacted with felsic volcanic rocks in the footwall. In contrast, the silicate facies iron formation that is more distal to sulfide accumulations has very weak positive Eu anomalies and gently sloping REE profiles, suggesting either cooler hydrothermal fluids or dilution of the hydrothermal component by detrital material. Hydrothermal alteration has affected most footwall rocks. Most notably, albite-destructive alteration has resulted in Na2O depletion, whereas mass addition of K2O is manifested in the formation of sericite (white mica). In more intensely altered quartz- and feldspar-phyric volcaniclastic rocks of the Grand Falls member, feldspar destruction is accompanied by chlorite alteration, producing quartz-phyric rocks similar to those in the footwall of many Bathurst Camp deposits."

Methane is recognized as one of the prime causes of underground mine disasters around the globe. A cost-effective mine ventilation system and methane control is required to ensure a safe and productive environment in an underground mine whilst keeping energy usage and operating cost at minimum. Typically methane enters a mine environment or tunnel from localized distributed sources at high initial concentration. Hence, an understanding of its dispersion from discrete sources is important to design a methane management system via effective ventilation. This study employs computational fluid dynamics to model methane dispersion in an underground tunnel which has a number of discrete sources of methane and effective ways to dilute and or disperse it. Air flow distribution within the tunnel as well as methane dispersion is simulated by solving the governing transport equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions. First, the effectiveness of ventilation duct placement is examined. Several possibilities are explored and investigated. It is found that the common configuration utilized in underground mine performs best as compared to other configurations in maintaining the concentration of methane below permissible levels. Next, a novel intermittent airflow ventilation system is proposed and evaluated via simulation with the goal of reducing the energy cost whilst maintaining methane level in the mining face below the allowable level. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate effects of various factors influencing the effectiveness and performance of this novel intermittent ventilation system. This study will provide some new ideas for designing an efficient and effective underground mine ventilation system by lowering the net average amount of air that needs to be circulated in the tunnel for a safe operation. For a mining operation, the determination of the best place to build haul roads is typically done by hand, or with the assistance of rudimentary shortest path optimisation algorithms. Straight line, point to point, modelling of costs is often used with distances multiplied by constants that are based on rise of the road between the points. Failings of this approach are that straight line approximations are notoriously poor as they do not take into account areas where a truck cannot travel. In addition, the rise and fall of the road may vary considerably over the truck journey meaning acceleration/deceleration and varying truck speeds are not taken into account. Lastly, the use of rudimentary optimisation algorithms means properties a truck must obey such as minimum turning circles, line of sight restrictions or even that the truck must travel forward at all times are not taken into account. Thus solutions generated may not be feasible, let alone optimal. In this paper we discuss a state of the art parallel Artificial Intelligence tree search technique for solving haul road location problems. As well as the above properties, factors such as road utilisation, cut and fill, and construction costs are taken into account. The combination of advanced modelling and fast computing and optimisation techniques produces significant benefits both in terms of time to generate roads and cost savings. Preliminary results where this method has been used are discussed.

"Oilfield cementing has been utilized in the industry since the turn of the century. Originally, wells were shallow and criteria for well integrity were somewhat limited. Since that time, wells have stretched the envelope in depth, temperature, and pressure. Environmental regulations have also become more stringent, thus, the importance of hydraulic isolation between permeable zones, and between these zones and surface has become more and more important.Initially, oilfield cements were comprised predominantly of construction cement and very limited additives. As time progressed, additives were incorporated to control pumping time or placement time and little effort was placed on optimizing actual components within the cement chemistry. This paper presents issues and concerns created by adding just one new component to the fundamental chemistry of an oilfield cement."

"One approach to making new technology available is to demonstrate its value under full-scale operating conditions. Studies were undertaken to assess the feasibility of this approach to introducing a longwall mining system to the western Canadian coalfields.The longwall method of mining coal is described, world and Canadian usage is reviewed, and the merits of the system in comparison 10 other coal mining methods are discussed.The rationale for a longwall demonstration in western Canada is presented, along with a proposed organization for the design, operation and dissemination of the findings from such a trial. The factors which must be considered in the design of the demonstration, and in the assessment of a potential site are highlighted. It is concluded that a demonstration of this technology is both timely and essential to prepare the way for the western Canadian coal industry of future prospects for coal.IntroductionFor many years CANMET has encouraged research work organized on a cooperative basis. This requires that a working consensus must be negotiated by researchers and operators at the beginning of the project and continuously refined as work proceeds. The result is usually a more relevant selection of research problems, improved direct ion and con duct of experiment al work and often a validation phase in which research concepts are tested in an opera ting environment. All this tends to narrow the gap between obtaining research results and applying them.Even under the best of circumstances cooperative projects require a good deal of coordination and enthusiasm to maintain focus and the pace of work. The working perspective of a research scientist in a government laboratory is substantially different from that of a mine operator at a producing mine, and a common ground must be found. This is difficult to do and cooperative projects typically evolve over several years as experimental results progressively define the potential solutions to mining problems."

The results of laboratory, bench-scale and semi-commercial investigations of a method for adding surfactant (technical-grade lignosulphonate) to the process of pressure leaching of nickel-containing pyrrhotite concentrates have been discussed. Lt has been demonstrated that feeding of technical-grade lignosulphonate distributed along the length of an autoclave ensures a reduction in its requirement by a factor of 1.5 to 2 as compared with single-point feeding; it also results in a decrease by 5% in the unit requirement of metallized iron-bearing precipitator in the process of non-ferrous metals precipitation and reduces by 0.05 to 0.1% (abs.) the nickel and copper contents in the tailings of the given process. Technical solutions have been proposed for commercial introduction of the process.

The Ambatovy Nickel Project comprises the development of mine, hydrometallurgical processing facilities and necessary infrastructure in Madagascar, positioning Ambatovy as one of the world’s largest producers of nickel and cobalt from lateritic ore. SNC-Lavalin successfully provided comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management (EPCM) services for this major capital project which, apart from its sheer size, scope, and engineering design, represented significant location, infrastructure, labour, environmental and climatic challenges. Today, the project has reached 90% of its nameplate capacity and is in its final performance optimization stage. This paper will discuss the significant project management effort that was required to successfully address the complexity of this major project. It will cover the main project management control systems and the engineering tools and processes used during the detail engineering, procurement, and construction phases to achieve optimum project execution.

"Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the AMIRA1 P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly sub-processes occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of:•,?a machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb);•,?a froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf );•,?entrainment and drainage parameters (???and d); and•,?an ore floatability parameter (Pi).These flotation parameters allow the plant engineer to develop a model of the flotation circuit that can be used as a powerful tool to diagnose the performance of that circuit. The recently developed JKSimFloat V6 flotation simulator uses these parameters to predict the flotation circuit performance that would arise from changes in operating conditions and circuit configuration.This new flotation technology was applied to the Placer Kanowna Belle Gold Mine in Western Australia. A series of plant surveys, cell characterisation measurements and laboratory batch tests were conducted to determine the flotation circuit model parameters to be used within the JKSimFloat V6 simulatorA thorough flotation circuit analysis was then performed at Kanowna Belle using JKSimFloat V6. The recommendations that were provided by this circuit analysis have resulted in large improvements in the flotation performance at Kanowna Belle. These include a 1.3% increase in flotation gold recovery and a substantial decrease in operating costs. The analysis is still ongoing, however, the benefits already obtained from applying this technology have resulted in a US$1.3 million a year improvement to the mine."

"Pitting corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in groundwater with a ternary inhibitor mixture (phosphonic acid + bivalent cation + various surfactants) was studied with different environmental variables such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and chloride ions. Critical pitting potential and corrosion potential were calculated for these test media using electrochemical techniques. Under the tested condition, the localized corrosion resistance of 304 SS was determined and the results are discussed. IntroductionPitting corrosion of metals and alloys is a major cause of failure in chemical processing desalination plants, scrubber for flue gas desulphurization (FGD) plants, water storage tanks and pipelines, petroleum refineries, etc.Heat exchangers and condensers in inland thermal and nuclear powerplants utilize groundwater as a coolant, but materials of construction are generally prone to localized corrosion.Localized corrosion attack can be initiated when the passive film on the metal is disrupted. The presence of certain aggressive anions such as chlorides (Cl-) can migrate to the actively corroding area and stabilize pitting corrosion. Attention has been focussed on improving the resistance of stainless steel against localizedcorrosion in aqueous environments.One of the most accepted methods of avoiding corrosion is by the addition of chemicals (inhibitors). Over the past two decades, some phosphonic acids have been explored due to their good corrosion inhibition efficiency and low toxicity (Fang et al., 1993; Karman et al., 1998; Rajendran et al., 1998; Gopi and Rajeswari, 2000a). Bivalent cations like Zn2+ are often applied as additives to inhibit the metal dissolution (Sekine and Hirakawa, 1986; Aruna Bahadur, 1998)."

The effect of superficial gas rate distribution (Jg profile) on down-the-bank metallurgical response was tested in the rougher-scavenger bank (eight 10-m3 tank cells, 4 roughers and 4 scavengers) at Highland Valley Copper Mine's Cu/Mo separation circuit. Three Jg profiles were tested: (a) as found (i.e., typical practice), (b) increasing decreasing (i.e., increasing from cell 1 to 4 and decreasing from cell 5 to 8), and (c) decreasing-increasing (i.e., decreasing from cell 1 to 4 and increasing from cell 5 to 8). The Jg profile approach proved to be of considerable value. Profile (b) gave the best metallurgical results, i.e., the highest down-the-bank grade/recovery (increase in grade at constant recovery was approx. 3-4% compared to the as found case) and the most efficient Cu/Mo separation (cumulative Cu recovery was reduced by almost half - approx. from 20% to 12%, at 99% Mo recovery). The success of the evaluation prompted the implementation of profile (b). Detailed gas dispersion characterization tests (Jg and Db (bubble size)) showed significant discrepancies between the Jg measured directly (using the McGill University sensor) and the Jg calculated from field instrument readings (volumetric gas flowmeter) and machine dimensions (cell cross-sectional area). Tests were designed to reveal the source of disagreement. It was observed that a significant number of bubbles were not able to float (i.e., they were entrained with the tailings), the evidence appearing to be a significant number of very small bubbles (approx. 200-300 µm) which did not have sufficient buoyancy to rise. Consequently, rather than relying on the field instrument, the evaluation depended on the McGill University Jg sensor, which collects bubbles in a tube near the pulp-froth interface, thus providing significance to the data as the measurements were obtained from bubbles that almost certainly floated.

This paper reports the results of the field demonstration campaign of a new process for removing and destroying ammonia from mining/ metallurgical effluent solutions. The 50-day campaign was carried out at a uranium plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. The process was developed by adapting and integrating two well established technologies: zeolite adsorption/ elution to extract the ammonia from the effluent stream and to produce a concentrated ammonia eluate; and conversion of the ammonia in the eluate to innocuous nitrogen by applying bacterial nitrification-denitrification (NH3 = > NO3 - => N2). The data show that reasonable target criteria were met, under very challenging operating conditions. Problem areas and possible causes for poor performance are identified. Preliminary and generic cost estimates of the process are also presented.

Mineral exploration assessment file information has long been considered a useful resource for developing mineral exploration strategies, and one of the most common data sets fled in assessment reports is ground magnetic surveys. The new Earth Resources and Land Information System database (ERLIS) now provides a method for rapidly accessing all references to a specific area through a series of raster images. The ERLIS provides access to the Assessment File Research Imaging (AFRI) database which comprises geo-science mineral exploration assessment file data, Mineral Deposits Inventory (MDI), together with provincial aeromagnetic data from the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines(MNDM). Conversion of the raster images of ground geophysical data to vector data files together with the concatenation of grids from adjacent claims provides a method for constructing high resolution magnetic regional images. The value of this resource is demonstrated through the construction of a single composite magnetic image derived from eight assessment file grids for an area south of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within Pacaud and Catharine Townships. The composite grid of magnetic data provides a map with resolution that is not achieved by currently available Ontario Geological Survey airborne data sets. Details contained within the new high resolution image, permit the differentiation of lithologies and their boundaries, fault orientations and the location of alteration zones with magnetic response.

Introduction Coal cleaning may be taken as meaning the separation of coal-as-mined into two or more fractions. Coal cleaning includes coal washing, together with any other means used in the ultimate preparation of coal prior to shipment (as coal) . The method of coal cleaning devised for any given mine must be one which is based entirely on the economic results obtainable. The installation of a high-cost and complex washing plant, designed to produce a low-ash dean coal, at the highest possible recovery, may be unsound practice. A crude 'roughing' washer may be the best result of sound engineering and operating consideration, and in some cases coal cleaning should be confined entirely to preparation at the face. Consideration of complete costs, to the point where the coal is actually sold, may show that certain seams are workable or not workable. Of the seams found workable, extraction of the whole or parts of the seam may be decided on. The portion to be extracted may contain rock or bone partings, which must be removed. It may be good practice to mine the extra portion and remove the objectionable materials by surface washing; or it may be that such materials should be removed underground, even at an increased mining cost. For instance, in some of the steeply pitching seams of the Alberta Crow's Nest Pass district, the removal of bone and rock at the face may be almost impossible under the usual 'up the pitch' or 'angle' mining methods, but possible by mining across the pitch so that the material to be rejected can be removed and gobbed. Again, if a complete seam is being extracted, investigation may show marked differences between top coal and bench coal, and if sufficient mine cars are being loaded from a chute at one time, the fact that such a place is working top or bench coal at the time may be reflected by peaks in ash content or size proportions at the ripple.
