"The Luilu cobalt plant at Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo, has been operating since the late 1950s, using a conventional precipitation flowsheet for removal of impurities from the cobalt process stream. Most impurities are, however, incompletely removed using this technology. Copper and zinc, both of which quantitatively deposit at the cathode in the cobalt electrowinning process, are two of the main impurities contaminating the cobalt metal product. Ion exchange offers a modern approach to removing these impurities from the cobalt advance electrolyte.Following a laboratory testwork programme to identify a suitable ion-exchange system, an on-site pilot-plant trial, treating 1500 to 3000 L/d of electrolyte, was operated for a period of six weeks to optimise the operating conditions and to determine full-scale design criteria. Copper removal was carried out using a fixed-bed lead-polish configuration with the Lanxess iminodiacetic acid resin, TP 207. Zinc removal was subsequently carried out in a similar configuration using the Lanxess aminophosphonic acid resin, TP 260. The optimised system proved capable of removing both copper and zinc from 20 to 30 mg/L to <1 mg/L from plant electrolyte containing ~20 g/L Co. Selective elution allows co-loaded cobalt to be returned to the main circuit and value to be obtained for the copper impurity. The process shows operational and economic advantages over the traditional flowsheet. Full-scale implementation of the developed process is in progress and some design considerations are discussed."

"When pyrite oxidizes in dark grey/black, calcareous, mudrocks or in argillaceous limestones, ferrous sulfate is formed and sulfuric acid is released. The sulfuric acid combines with the calcite present in the rock and calcium sulfate (gypsum) develops. When this occurs on the outer edges of aggregate particles, the gypsum forms in the matrix hence there may be little expansion of the general material. However, when the chemical reactions occur within the rock fragments, particularly on microscopic, clayrich, laminae, the developing crystals exert a significant pressure on the host material. If the rock is medium strong to strong, the force of crystallization splits the rock along the weaker planes, facilitating the ingress of the oxidizing agents and the continuation of the chemical reactions. In addition to causing dilation/heave, some of the engineering properties of the material are changed, including the strength, Los Angeles value, water absorption etc. As a consequence material, which at the time of quarrying would be acceptable for use beneath floors or hardstandings, would no longer be considered suitable.INTRODUCTIONMudrocks accreting in aerobic environments are frequently disturbed by organisms and as a consequence there is often little sign of bedding. In contrast, sediments which have formed in anoxic environments commonly have distinct bedding planes which, because of the grain size of the accreting material, are often smooth and planar. These rocks are frequently referred to as shales, which O’Brien and Slatt (1990) define as “characterised by a finely laminated structure, which imparts a fissility approximately parallel to the bedding.” This should not be confused with rhythmic bedding where the variation in grain size results in lithological laminations or colour changes.Early geologists, in the stratigraphic naming of rocks, often used the term shale for material which is now more likely to be described as mudstone or mudrock (Hawkins and Pinches, 1992). In many contexts, the width of the bedding is an important factor, not only in determining the rock name but also in indicating the potential engineering characteristics. Until recently a shale was considered to have bedding separations of less than 20mm, i.e. the bedding was described as laminated. However, in an engineering context, EN 14689: 2003, Annex A, defines shale by specifying a bedding thickness of < 6mm; such a material would be described as thinly laminated in BS 5930:1999. Ideally the term shale should be abandoned and be replaced by fissile mudstone or fissile mudrock."

It is very easy to reduce iron ore at a temperature well below its melting point and produce a more-or-less-pure metal which can be used directly for implements, tools, or machines. This simplicity has been the cause of much money loss by persons who were so satisfied with the successful operation of a process that they paid all too little attention to the commercial aspects of it. How easy a direct process is may be gleaned from the fact that it was practised with some -success by primitive man, and has been in almost continuous operation in one form or another for a period of probably 4,000 years. The production of steel in ton lots, beginning about 1860, brought a new phase into the economic situation, which, however, had been already greatly modified in 1784 by Henry Cort&apos;s invention of purifying pig iron. Direct processes survived both of these revolutions, under special geographical conditions, even up to the last few years of the nineteenth century, but ceased to have any general use as the basis of supply for structural, machine, or tool industries even in countries which could have manufactured iron by a direct process, but, instead, imported the product of established iron and steel processes. And this is still the situation today, notwithstanding the invention of an incredible number of &apos;new&apos; processes since 1900, most of which are abandoned, and only survived as along as their financial backers were willing and able to Jose money. Probably none of these processes failed to work pretty well, and all seemed to show a handsome profit on paper.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to introduce the reader to rock bolting and its present application in mining.Rock bolting consists of bolting insecure rock to secure rock in order to form a safe structure. The insecure rock may be a weak beam or loose from arching or from sloughing. The material is strengthened and held in place before damage can result.Little is known of the limitations of rock bolting; to date, work has been carried on by trial-and-error, with large safety factors being used. Rock bolts have been principally used for roof support. Bolting offers a new field of support to the mining industry: it now has a permanent position as a ground control method.HistoryRock bolting is a relatively new means of support, its exact origin being unknown.Bolting has been in use at the St. Joseph Lead Company's property in Southeastern Missouri for the past twenty-six years, the first attempts having been hit-or-miss trials before a systematic attack was made. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.

PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed &apos;hard-rock&apos; mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-&apos;able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been &apos;crossed with other bloods&apos; until one sees now many distinct &apos;breeds&apos; in the list. Present-day explosives still have the &apos;bark&apos; and the &apos;bite&apos;, but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel&apos;s dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

They will be familiar with many of the points I intend to discuss. However, without in any way suggesting that familiarity breeds contempt, might I emphasize that even in this particular forum there is justification for reiterating some of our basic philosophies and suggesting ways whereby they might be better understood and promoted.Let us first summarize the present dimensions of the Canadian mining industry."

"This paper deals with the methods used by Quebec Cartier Mining Company in the evaluation and selection of new haulage equipment and in increasing the productivity of the existing fleet.Selection of new equipment is based upon the comparison, for each model under consideration, of the capital investment required and the estimated operating costs and production rate. The calculation of the production rate is based on a widely used estimating procedure. Actual operating conditions considered in the method include: payload, haul distance, road grade, rolling resistance, loading and dumping times, and operational efficiency. A digital computer is used to handle the large volume of repetitive calculations required. Where a fleet of haulage equipment includes trucks of different size and performance characteristics, the problem exists of assigning each truck type to the different working locations to minimize total cost. Linear programming can be used in the solution of this problem."

"In the Timmins area, a close spatial and chronological association exists between gold deposits and two major stratabound carbonate-rich members and related quartz-feldspar porphyries. Synvo/canic and metamorphogenic are the two main types of mineralization recognized. Synvolcanic ores include the stratiform quartz-ankerite ""veins"", pyritic carbonates and chert-carbonate-tuff sedimentary rocks and epigenetic ventrelated breccias and stringer zones. Metamorphogenic ores consist of quartz-carbonate fracture fillings in dilatant zones developed during various phases of regional deformation and metamorphism. They are classically epigenetic in character.The evidence suggests a primary syngenetic enrichment of gold on the ocean floor and in vent areas during submarine felsic volcanism and related exhalative-hydrothermal activity followed by further enrichment into quartz-carbonate stockworks during regional deformation and greenschist metamorphism.Although normally thin (a few hundred metres), carbonate members in Archean volcanic terrain represent intense hydrothermal activity which could have transported and enriched gold. They should be used to locate fossil vents and structurally favourable zones where economic concentrations of gold may be found."

In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

Due to always getting stricter environmental legislations as well as increasing land filling fees the efforts for treating residues from metallurgy are continuously increasing. In case of filter dusts from metallurgical industry, the high zinc bearing electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts or also dusts from secondary copper industry are important sources for the recovery of secondary zinc oxide. Because of low capacities for secondary zinc concentrates (like Waelz oxide) in primary zinc metallurgy, the upgrade of such concentrates to a quality that meets the requirements of high quality (technical) zinc oxide becomes more and more important. This would open the opportunity to break into new markets and use it for example directly in electrolytic galvanizing. Therefore this paper will summarize possibilities for an elimination of halogens from secondary zinc oxides. Furthermore selective volatilization trials, with a synthetic mixture according to the analysis of Waelz oxide, were carried out to remove impurities to achieve an upgraded product quality.

In his April 10, 1978 budget address, Finance Minister Chretien declared that the federal government will restrict the growth of its spending to less than the trend growth of the gross national product; over the past year, both the federal and a number of provincial governments have taken action to cut back on spending policies. This new emphasis in restraint would seem 10 be a response to a mounting public reaction to the rapid growth of government spending - and taxation - over the past 25 years. Although this relatively new government posture on public spending may be admired by many, to others it raises the question: "Can the growth in government spending really be stopped?" This article comments on just how government revenues - and spending - have grown over the past few years in Canada, and mentions some of the issues relating to a slowdown in that growth.

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities for the nickel industry, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTION The process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. Schedule savings in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of the pilot plant or in a rapid completion of the experimental program can be disproportionately beneficial to the overall development project. However, inappropriate shortcuts resulting in major oversights can be disproportionately problematic. A number of considerations and suggestions for both the project execution approach and the process engineering design of pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities are presented as a guide for potential owners and operators of new pilot-plant equipment and facilities. These suggestions are particularly applicable to the nickel industry, where the majority of our firm’s prior hydrometallurgical experience was obtained. This paper is an update to an earlier publication (Martin, 2004), offering an opportunity for a new generation of metallurgists and engineers to learn the specialist requirements of pilot- and demonstration-scale plant design, which are key functions in the development and commercialization of new processes."

"Ventilation in process buildings is key to proper mill function. Correctly engineered systems to evacuate surplus thermal energy from process areas allow optimized rates of air change, thus assuring the good functioning for the lifecycle of the process while demonstrating conformity with occupational hygiene standards. Computational fluid dynamic simulations, coupled with traditional calculations and physical modeling, can demonstrate to end users and assist engineers in the optimization of mill ventilation, reducing total installation costs while assuring that the proper solution is in place for the complete lifecycle of the process equipment. Results have been fully implemented on a number of steel mill and aluminium smelter applications and we continue to study, optimize, and innovate as new tools become available to provide the best possible engineered solutions for particular applications. INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this research project is the development and implementation of modern approaches and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in the engineering of green ventilation of hot process buildings. This will assure the predictive performance and improve the quality and ease of construction of industrial gravity ventilation equipment, along with the adjunct hot process buildings, while lowering the overall project costs and time to completion.In order for a hot process building, such as a steel mill, to properly function, heat must be extracted from within. This is accomplished by having air inlets at the bottom of the building and outlets at its apex. The reason for this is to maximize the potential chimney effect. When using stack (buoyancy) effect ventilation, the process heat becomes the driver. Therefore, increasing this distance (height) improves the ability of the heated airstream to utilize basic gravity for acceleration of the heat/air flow, allowing a regular number of air changes per hour while ensuring that the process environment remains weather resistant under normal operating conditions.This process has been understood since the time of King Charles I of England, who decreed in 1600 that buildings should have 10 foot ceilings and that windows should be made taller rather than wider to allow better smoke extraction.Figure 1 is a painting of the Bethlehem Steel Works in the 1860s, where the concept of air inlets and penthouses on the roofs for air outlet was already being put into practice. Figure 2 is an early photograph of the Pittsburgh Steel Works."

"The integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) aims to provide life cycle management decisions for military platforms and their propulsion systems with reduced life cycle cost and increased operational readiness and safety. Among all the issues of IVHM, understanding the physics of failure and predicting lifetimes of the critical components are at the core: the decision makers have to know when and how components may fail in order to plan ahead. The difficulties to tackle failure problems lie in determining the material response to cyclic and dwell loading in a hot and/or corrosive environment, which all combined to induce multiple deformation and damage mechanisms, resulting in mix-mode failures. Decisions on component replacement (material substitution) and mission planning must be based on quantitative knowledge of the failure physics to mitigating the risk. This paper addresses the critical failure issues including creep, low cycle fatigue (LCF), thermomechanical fatigue (TMF); and presents a mechanism-based approach to life prediction. The mechanism-based approach, by its physics, is widely applicable over the entire operational spectrum of both structures and engines, and therefore is suitable for IVHM purposes."

"CANADA HAS A GREATER LAKE AREA than any other country. Discountin the Great Lakes, this fresh-water area, mainly in the Canadian Shield, is listed as approximately 300,000 sq. mi. Densities of lakes range up to 7,500 in a 5,294-sq. mi. area of the Shield, southwest of Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan. Five areas chosen randomly from the Shield (Figure 1) contained sufficient lakes to provide samples at a density of at least one per 10 sq. mi. Regional geochemical surveys in the Appalachian area (Nova Scotia, Boyle et al., 1958; New Brunswick, Boyle et al., 1966) and in the Cordilleran area (Yukon, Gleeson, 1965) of Canada and in many other areas of the world have relied heavily on analyses of stream sediments. These surveys show that sampling of material related to the drainage system reflects the over-all trace element content of the rocks and surficial deposits in the drainage basin. In the Shield, the classic types of dendritic (and other) stream systems found elsewhere in the world are very rare. However, impeded and disorganized stream systems that abound with lakes can provide the exploration geochemist with an ideal composite drainage system sample in the form of lake sediment. This paper attempts to demonstrate the feasibility of, and review the theory and problems involved in, the use of lake sediment as a regional geochemical exploration medium. Most of the references to field examples are taken from a regional survey using lake bottom sediment as the sample medium over 1,500 sq. mi of the Coppermine basalt group and adjacent rocks (Figure 2). During this regional survey, detailed sampling of several lakes was carried out and the results are referred to at appropriate places in the text."

The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. Common water-miscible organic solvents including DMSO, DMF, methanol, ethanol, acetone and THF in combination with HCl and low concentrations of H2O2 were investigated for dissolution of gold. THF showed the best result demonstrating that gold powder could be completely dissolved in 1.5 hours in 1.0 mol/L HCl and 0.2 mol/L H2O2. No complete gold dissolution was observed for the rest of solvents even after 24 hours. The rate of gold dissolution was measured by dissolving gold wire in THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture. The rate of gold dissolution in optimised condition was 75 g m-2 h-1 at room temperature and significantly increased to 590 g m-2 h-1 by raising the temperature up to 60 oC. Although a THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture showed a slower dissolution rate in comparison with aqua regia, however the applied conditions are considerably milder which is highly promising for gold leaching in an industrial scale.
