The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. Site specific geotechnical data, deposit characteristics and method of mining are key factors when assessing an appropriate slope design philosophy. Mining geotechnics should be viewed as an iterative design process linked closely with mine planning, development and operational safety constraints. This case study presents geotechnical investigations for slope design at Macraes Flat Gold Mine using kinematic, probabilistic and economic analyses tempered with knowledge of site specific conditions. The recommended designs not only reduce early waste stripping tonnages but also provide data to optimise final walls.

Agglomeration for Copper Heap Leaching Agglomeration of ore is a method which can be used to eliminate the migration of fine grained particles throughout a leach heap. Without agglomeration, fine ore particles are able to migration within the heap, clogging flow channels and producing large areas where access of the solution is poor. In order to gain the benefits of agglomeration and improve agglomerate strength even further in copper heap leaching, an economical, acid-resistant binder is needed. However, most binders have been used without any systematic reasoning. A set of novel testing methods were developed, including a soak test, percolation flooded columns, and larger long-term leach columns. The soak test compares the degree of breakdown when agglomerates are subjected to an acidic environment. While the percolation flooded columns and larger long-term leach columns evaluate the flow of leach solution throughout the ore bed. Systematic studies have been completed on a wide range of binders using these novel testing procedures. It was found that for a low grade chalcocite ore, which was rich in silica, from a southwest US mine, polyacrylamides reduced the fines migration the best in the novel soak test. The non-ionic binder, in particular, was found to reduce fines migration as much as 93 per cent. Several of the binders tested were shown to increase the hydraulic conductivities of the agglomerated ore up to 2.5 mm/sec, compared to a hydraulic conductivity of only 0.25 mm/sec when no binder was used. These binders also prevented 'slumping' of the ore, which indicates a decrease in breakdown of the agglomerates. The use of a binder also showed no interference with leaching reactions in long-term leaching experiments.

The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. As the mining landscape continues to transform, the challenge of accessing deeper orebodies quickly and safely is becoming a frequent topic of conversation amongst those in the mining industry. The rapid development of underground mine entries to gain earlier access to deeper orebodies is an ever-present challenge to mine owners and contractors. Overcoming this and providing economical solutions to unlock the value in these deeper deposits is a challenge that should be confronted.In 2013, Redpath Australia Pty Ltd (Redpath) commenced construction of what would be the first of two drifts excavated through the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.The excavation and development of the two drifts (declines) was completed as part of a contract for underground mining services between Redpath and Anglo American at the Grosvenor Coal Mine Project in Central Queensland, located approximately 5 km north of the town of Moranbah. Having recently completed the drift development, this paper will extend on the early writings of Donnelly, Ramage and Donghi (2014) and provide detail on the operational achievements, advance rates, threats, opportunities and learnings during the excavation of the two declines: the conveyor (CV) drift and the transport (M&M) drift.CITATION:Ramage, G, Donghi, M and Barnes, A, 2016. Development of New Comminution Testing Methodologies for Geometallurgical Mapping of Ore Hardness and Throughput The emerging discipline of 'geometallurgy' is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. Constrained sampling that reflects and defines inherent ore body variability is a key geometallurgical requirement. This requires use of larger numbers of low-cost physical testing which can be applied to small sample volumes suitable for defining natural variability. The AMIRA P843 'GeMIII' project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major industry-supported research initiative designed to develop new tools, methods and protocols to support geometallurgical integration. As part of this integrated research a new more rapid low-cost comminution test (GeM Comminution index) has been developed which can be employed as a front line tool for geometallurgical mapping purposes and predictive throughput modelling. The test has been designed to be inserted into routine assay sample preparation and is based on constrained jaw crushing protocols linked to analysis of resultant size distributions. Extensive validation and modelling has shown the GeM Comminution Index (Ci) is correlated with the Drop Weight index A*b and Bond Mill Work Index (BMWi). Large scale trials have been conducted within a commercial assay laboratory to demonstrate and optimise incorporation of the Ci test into routine sample preparation protocols. While Ci based estimates of A*b and BMWi are not as precise compared to larger volume more expensive test-work, the ability to undertake large numbers of tests typically in a systematic down-hole manner, provides a high level of data support through adjacency. A Ci based approach is highly suitable for variability mapping, domaining and selecting large composite samples for more precise testing. Within the context of the AMIRA P843 project this forms part of an integrated work flow designed to support geometallurgical integration. The development of a comminution test linked to routine assay sample preparation represents significant value adding to a process that in most cases is already going to be carried out. Modern computers and software provide powerful tools for the geologist to construct reliable models of geological resources, and the mining engineer to produce accurate and workable mine plans. Over the years many people have developed a phobia of computers, especially for geological analysis, modelling and mine planning. This phobia is often caused by a lack of knowledge, poor training or a bad experience. The adoption however of computers for geological modelling and mine planning is now becoming mainstream. With the correct training, a good understanding of input data, and detailed knowledge of the required results, the phobia can safely be overcome to provide mining operations with increased productivity.

Remote sensing, in general, is the recording of light and heat from a planet's surface within a certain range of the electromagnetic spectrum. For the Earth, systems capable of this recording are the MultiSpectral Scanner (MSS) and SLAR. The former is the recording system used in satellite and will be discussed in the next section. SLAR stands for Side Looking Airborne Radar. This device sends invisible radar waves which illuminate the Earth's surface. The reflected waves are subsequently recorded as images. The system can operate through darkness and dense cloud cover, and is particularly suited for the study of geological structures at both large and small scale (Wayland 1976). Remote sensing techniques are now widely being made use of in mineral exploration, especially for those last remote 'sanctuaries' where geological data are meagre or non-existent. For places like Borneo, West Irian, the Amazon Basin etc. remote sensing, in the form of both satellite imagery and SLAR, is of considerable help, in fact more often than not the only help, to delineate geological provinces, geotectonic domains and meaningful lineaments. In the case of New Zealand, well made geological maps at scale 1:250 000 by the Geological Survey are available to the public and these provide useful preliminary grounds for the selection of target areas. However, even in this case LANDSAT imagery can be of aid as will be shown later.

Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870's û early 1880's, shortly after the initial discovery of Martha Hill. Indeed, early recovery problems from the Martha Hill mineralisation led to the preferred development of are bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, Union to name a few. Work at Gladstone Hill is carried under the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture between Auag Resources Ltd - manager (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd) and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Hill operation. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Hill, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with the Gladstone vein set and the more recently identified high grade Moonlight Lode. Veining ranges in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area is yet to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.

Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

The Kanowna Belle gold mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, approximately 18 km north-east of Kalgoorlie. The processing plant is designed to process 2 Mt/y and has the capability to treat both refractory and free milling ore from the Kanowna Belle and Kundana mining operations.The Kanowna Belle ore is refractory with the gold mineralisation occurring mostly as fine-grained inclusions in pyrite or as very fine-grained gold located in pyritic arsenic rich growth zones. The Kanowna Belle refractory process includes flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and calcine leaching to extract the gold from the ore.Mineralogical analysis of feed and tailings streams from the flotation circuit have shown that the gold bearing minerals are well liberated and confirmed they are mainly associated with pyrite. Nearly 40% of the flotation circuit losses are in the -38 µm size fraction. To improve the flotation circuit recovery, the fine particle gold recovery was targeted. A Cavitation Tube column was selected for the site-based pilot test work program. The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

"The mandate of the 2005 VALMIN Code to provide ‘(all) reliable, thorough, understandable material information required by investors and their advisers when making investment decisions’ requires that due diligence for tenure be full and thorough. Yet a published due diligence would often appear to be simply a list of tenures allegedly held without any commitment as to the standing of the tenure as safe and secure or otherwise.The value of due diligence for tenure, as mandated in the 2012 JORC Code and the 2005 VALMIN Code, must focus on compliance rather than simply on ‘vital statistics’. Enforcement in every jurisdiction in Australia focuses on penalties (some more harsh than others) for non-compliance, which, in turn and most importantly, reflects directly on security of tenure. Some 22 Acts (on average) impinge on security of tenure and fundamentally underpin the security of any mineral asset.This paper will outline regulatory processes to demonstrate how tenure compliance is achieved and argue that the rigorous application of good practices in tenure evaluation will lead to more of this information being made available on a regular basis.The paper will then focus on further practical examples of tenure compliance failures, the application of these to the requirements of the JORC and VALMIN Codes and due diligence that failed to fulfil the mandate. Examples will be given that alerted other professionals using the JORC Code to complex geological and mining situations of which they were unaware in their valuations.Finally, the author will make a personal plea for tenure to be considered at the commencement of any reporting process.CITATION:Evans-Wheeler, J, 2016.
