Total Development - in which he cited urban development, and intensive agriculture. 2. Partial development - in which he cited pastoral, and in this category would come National Parks. 3. Non development - in which category would fall the primitive or wilderness areas.

In recent times there has been a marked increase in public awareness of air pollution. Some of this has been induced by the Press but our own senses tell us that there is a visible haze over our cities on many mornings. The people are now demanding a clean environment and will no longer tolerate smoke and dust fall or gaseous and odorous emission which either soil building and furnishings or interfere with comfort and well being.

These are not insignificant changes and in this paper briefly summarises these proposals. These new work initiatives and changes to the organisational structure will have implications for the industry as a whole and also for the way individual clients interact with Crown Minerals.

Details are given of the excellent performance, outside Australia, of steel slag in road pavement surfacing. Laboratory tests and plant trials have shown Port Kembla BOF steel slag to be a material with properties suitable for producing asphaltic concrete which will maintain a high skid resistance in service under heavy traffic. The high density of steel slag is a factor which will result in a cartage cost penalty likely to restrict usage to close to its source.

One does not need to travel too far back in time to find that the manpower requirements for new projects were focused mainly on: ò plentifulness of supply; ò cheapness of use; and ò fitness for use. These were primarily quantitative considerations and corresponded with the dominant view of labour as a commodity. Qualitative considerations were not very evident with the exception of judgements of industrial militancy. It was not unusual for areas of known militancy to be excluded from the recruitment net (eg Captain's Flat, Broken Hill, Pilbara).

Research programs have established the correlation between the basic mill operating parameters such as: size of crushing products, number of mill rotation, ore flow and quantity of ore in the mill, diameter of grinding media, and specific consumption of grinding media. Also, the mill efficiency has been determined in dependence of adsorption. Mathematical dependences and equations are presented in this paper.

A series of experiments were carried out with Hallimond tube in order to test the effects of different reagents. A good result has been obtained when potassium-n-butyl xanthate is used as collector for molybdenite and graphite complex are depressed by the depressor mixed with nigrosine and iron (III) chloride. The accuracy with which block values are known can have a fundamental effect on the success of an operation.From a geostatistical study the variance of the error in extending sample values to block values can be determined and the engineer must ensure that this is sufficiently small by adjusting the size of blocks or moreintensive sampling. A study is given for a deposit showing a high degree of anisotropy and it is shown that the shape of the block is not important in determining the estimates.

Often the `black box' is expected to provide instant answers to many complex questions. This document which was adopted at the Conference, provides a global action guideline for sustainable development into the 21st century.Sustainable mining requires a complete understanding of the `mineral cycle', including government legislation, mineral exploration, mining operations, rehabilitation, product use, re-cycling and waste disposal that takes into consideration associated social and environmental considerations and achieves economic objectives.
