Over the past 75 years, the mining of platinum has predominantly focused on the Merensky Reef horizon in the western Bushveld region of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) of South Africa (Figure 1). The orebody is relatively flat dipping at 10¦ to 25¦, narrow tabular in shape and has been mined to a maximum depth of some 1600 m within Anglo Platinum. This has resulted in the installation of up to four generations of shaft systems as mining progressed into reserves at greater depth. In recent years, with the improvement in processing technology and improved economics, in particular with the improved price of palladium, the mining of the UG2 Chromitite Reef is proving economically viable. The UG2 Chromitite Reef occurs below the Merensky Reef in the succession and the normal separation varies from 15 m to 400 m, with the largest separation between the reefs occurring in the eastern region of the BIC. The UG2 Chromitite Reef horizon is now being accessed from existing Merensky mining infrastructure by cross-cutting back through the stratigraphy where appropriate, or by establishing new decline cluster systems from surface, along the extensive strike length of the various mining properties. These declines are generally established utilising mechanised mining techniques. This paper gives an overview of the techno-economic approaches considered and evaluated for the selection of the optimum mining and shaft systems. More specifically, the paper reviews the design parameters used, techno-economics, conveyor versus haul alternatives, logistics simulations, capital costs, system performance, time to market or ramp-up success, important system differences and lessons learnt.

The techniques used by the State Electricity Commis- sion of Victoria to handle and store brown coal in the both the raw coal and boiler bunkers are outlined. These tech- niques were adopted in agreement with the science of modern bulk solids handling. By successful balance between practical requirements and bulk solid handling system design require- ments the Commission expects to confidently attain reliable coal flow even for the most adverse of coal flow properties. Attainment of this goal demanded full attention to channel detail selection. An outcome of this attention has been the development of a novel bunker and discharge arrangement for handling extremely difficult to handle coals. Due to the novel features of this slot bunker outlet arrangement it's ad- vantages and disadvantages are discussed.

Permian oroclines in eastern Australia must have formed by sliding on a detachment surface. It is identified as a westward- dipping Devonian and Carboniferous sub- duction zone. Major strike-slip faults probably sole out on the same surface. One major fault with an associated serpentinite belt was pulled away from the craton abd bent into loops. Basins formed in the loops.

This paper discusses the results of an Australian Coal Association Research Program project into the development of a routine analytical design method for roof support in underground mines. Simple design tools have been developed using a combination of elastic solutions, free body diagrams, and pile theory. An approach to the design of roof support in layered strata based on the ability of bolts to resist shear stresses is outlined. It is shown that pre-tensioning and angled installation are effective ways of increasing the effectiveness of bolts in such a situation. In highly stressed strata, macroscopic failure is predicted and a design based on the support of surcharged rock wedges is proposed. The methods are applicable to both coal and metalliferous mines.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.

Models of the evolution of the hydrothermal systems that form porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposits are compromised because aqueous magma-derived fluids in the ore zones of most deposits have changed from their original magmatic compositions as a result of cooling, depressurising, mineral precipitation, brine-vapour unmixing and fluid-rock reactions. However, in deep quartz-rich, sulfide-poor veins from numerous porphyry type deposits, we have identified parental fluids trapped in inclusions at near magmatic temperatures and pressures above the brine-vapour unmixing solvus. We have analysed these inclusions for bulk salinity, density, solute chemistry, helium isotopic ratios and elemental composition. These parental inclusions contain 35 - 70 volume per cent bubble, are low to moderate salinity, contain up to ten mol per cent CO2, and commonly contain a chalcopyrite daughter crystal. Our results indicate that these Cu-rich fluids transport Cu from a plutonic complex below upward into a hydrothermal system, where decompression, cooling, unmixing and water-rock reaction drive ore-mineral precipitation. Na/Cl ratios greater than one indicate that in addition to chlorine, sulfur and/or carbonate must play a key role in Cu transportation. Helium isotope ratios indicate that between ~15 and 100 per cent of helium in these fluids is mantle-derived. We suggest that in addition to He, volatiles from mafic magmas in the mantle are also likely to supply CO2, Cu and S to the fluids that form porphyry copper deposits. Willemite mineralization was discovered in 1966 in the North Flinders Ranges of South Australia, in the course of a stream sediment sampling programme. Further work outlined a total of nine separate willemite occurrences in the Copley/Beltana area, and ten small deposits in the Toondana area south of Parachilna. Mineable reserves of 1 000 000 tonnes grading 36.8% zinc were outlined in three deposits in the Copley/Beltana area and campaign mining of the Main Orebody commenced early in 1974. The main group of deposits all occurred within red, dolomitized Cambrian Ajax Limestone, and most are associated with significant thrust faulting. The area of the Main Orebody group of deposits has been intensely fractured, and the surrounding dolomites are often brecciated and contain up to 5% zinc. Lead and arsenic mineralization are minor components of the main group of deposits. Masses of Middle Proterozoic Willouran Formation crop out adjacent to or close to most of the deposits in the Copley/Beltana area. The Willouran is frequently highly sheared, brecciated, and often contains large inclusions of younger formations. It is believed that most of the Willouran outcrops represent piercement structures.

The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the'coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised. A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines'consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. At the Cominco Ltd plant in Trail, British Columbia, the Betts lead electrorefining operation requires that antimony and arsenic be present in the lead bullion for anode slimes stability control. Until 1986 the antimony and arsenic inputs from concentrates to the Lead Smelter needed to be supplemented with high antimony and arsenic content recycles from the Silver Refinery operation to maintain a satisfactory composition. Subsequently the antimony and arsenic inputs have increased as a result of increasing levels of antimony in Sullivan lead concentrate and the purchase of larger quantities of silver/gold bearing concentrates that inherently have higher antimony and arsenic levels. The increase has exceeded the limits required by the Betts process. It therefore became necessary to install a partial softening process downstream of the Continuous Drossing Furnace to satisfactorily control the bullion composition. Process control and oxygen injection techniques used in the partial softening process are reviewed. Approximately 8 tonnes/day of softening slag are produced having a combined antimony and arsenic content of 25 percent. This slag is reduced in a recently commissioned short rotary furnace followed by vacuum distillation of the metal for recovery of the antimony and arsenic values.

The ore body at Elura contains fine grained galena and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite. A differential flotation circuit concentrates lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The lead section, shown in figure 1, was sampled in detail previously and the metallurgical performance assessed on a size by size basis. That assessment took no account of liberation and given the fine grained nature of the ore body, this could lead to an incomplete picture of the flotation performance. Liberation measurements were made using the QEM*SEM system on four size fractions of samples taken from seven different streams in the lead section. Using the mineral flows obtained from the mass balance around the lead section an excellent liberation balance was obtained which enabled the effect of liberation on the flotation performance to be assessed. The measurements indicated that only 17 per cent of the galena and 28 per cent of the sphalerite in the flotation feed was liberated. On the other hand 31 per cent of the gangue iron sulphides were liberated. The final concentrate was largely composed of locked galena and locked iron sulphides with 85 per cent of the product being locked. There was a small but significant fraction of liberated pyrite.

Design of underground extraction layouts to protect surface improvements is an important area of subsidence research in the Coal Mining Engineering Branch of the Department of Mineral Resources, New South Wales, Australia. Some conventional partial extraction layout are important with reference to coal recovery and surface subsidence. The analysis ofsubsidence data collected from field surveys over longwall panels in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales allows assessment of the effect of pillars left unmined between the longwall panels in reducing surface subsidence. The availability ofa wide variety of layouts with ranging degrees of surface movements affords considerable flexibility in designing layouts to suit a particular situation.Total extraction of coal should be the aim as far as possible. Partial extraction layouts should only be considered when surface subsidence movements caused by total extraction are not acceptable to the surface improvements.

The main parameters are : 1. the size of the deposit, average grades and grade distributions, 2. the operating costs of mining and concentration, 3. the investments in mine and mill, 4. the smelter charge, 5. the price(s) of the metal, 6. the recovery and the grade of the concentrate, 7. the rate of interest, 8. the taxation formulae, 9. the upper limit to rate and the rate interval and 10. the upper and lower limits to cutoff and the cutoff interval. An amount of ore can be mined at various rates while applying various cutoff grades. In an effort to improve returns to shareholders, the Australian Mining Industry has consolidated considerably over the past decade or so. Technical services at mines have been re-structured, whilst those at corporate offices have been all but eliminated. A recent study of the role of the geologist in BM Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd (BMA), showed the adverse impact on the companyÆs performance due to a lack of geologists. With an education campaign, to demonstrate the contribution of geologists to the æbottom lineÆ and in increasing the options available to the company, the value of the geology role became better understood. The implications of the loss of invaluable corporate knowledge, when long serving geologists left the company, also became clear. Steps have since been taken to increase the numbers of company geologists, particularly on mine sites. In common with other sectors of the mining industry, the Australian coal industry is experiencing a critical shortage of experienced coal geologists, as companies have found in recent recruitment efforts. This is further evidence that the recommendations from the recent study by World Competitive Practices, commissioned by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, æRising to the ChallengeÆ have not been adopted. People, and the mineral resource base, are the assets from which mining companies gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Geologists, as the nexus between the resource base and people, are in a unique position to enhance the profitability of their companies. To maximise their contribution to the industry, and ensure that they receive due recognition, geologists must adopt a more commercial approach in their work and take a front foot stance in promoting their value to management. Geology is a core competency for all mining companies. The tendency for companies to outsource this function, to the detriment of the company geologist role, is not sustainable in the longer term. TodayÆs geologists need to work closely with management, technical and human resource professionals, universities and schools to ensure their significant value is well understood, and that the industry can attract, train and retain new recruits through the implementation of graduate programs and company career paths.

The Oregon-Idaho graben evolved after widespread Uwleiitic flood basalt volcanism associated with the arrival of the plume head of the Yellowstone hotspot beneath southeastern Oregon approximately 17-16 Ma. The north- to north- northeast-trending, 50 km-wide graben evolved between 15.5 and 10.5 Ma during east-west extension. The graben is part of a middle Miocene back-arc rift (1,100 km long) that includes the northern Nevada rift, the Baker and LaGrande grabens, and the Chief Joseph dike swarm of the Columbia River Basalt Group. The graben ceased to be a volcano- tectonic depression as the cross-cutting western Snake River plain began to evolve at approximately 10.5 Ma.

Sunburst PCF (Penetrating Cone Fracture) technology has recently undergone extensive underground field trials at Leinster Nickel Operations, Western Australia. Trials with the Sunburst machine started in September 1994 and continued through to December 1994 during which approximately 130 metres of tunnel were developed. The Sunburst technology was used to excavate sub-levels through ultramafic nickel ore for future sub-level caving operations at the Perseverance nickel mine. The Sunburst machine demonstrated reasonable instantaneous advance rates, however, there are still a number of future developments/design changes which need to be addressed prior to the PCF technology being trialed again in a production environment. This paper benchmarks conventional drill and blast at Leinster against the Sunburst Excavator machine performance within similar tunnel dimensions and rock conditions. In addition to productivity and cost information; environmental considerations, support and labour requirements are also discussed. Problems with the current machine design are highlighted and possible future design changes are suggested. The Sunburst machine could be a suitable technology for advancing development through weak to moderate rock conditions and may also reduce overall support costs. With the potential for automation and the ability to reduce rock damage into the development tunnel walls, it is proposed that the Sunburst machine warrants further consideration.
