This paper deals briefly with productivity-enhancing advances in shaft sinking technology in South Africa post-World War II in general and the developments and application of long rounds since the 1980s in particular and is amply illustrated.It touches on the conversion to circular section, concrete lined shafts, the introduction of tungsten carbide drill bit inserts and grab lashing; expounds the rationale driving the development of longer rounds; and then describes the evolution of long rounds using hand-held and mechanically mounted rockdrills in South Africa and Canada by both local and foreign contractors. The recent experience gained on the sinking of the South Deep Main Shaft follows. Results obtained from this experiment are tabulated and commented upon. The paper concludes with the postulation of æwhat nextÆ and æwhere toÆ scenarios. Addenda include a list of shaft rounds in excess of three metres in length blasted in the Main Shaft at South Deep and their results, typical round design, manufacturerÆs specifications for the 6 m shaft jumbo and rock drills.

Research to develop the use of L.D.slag as an aggregate in road construc-tion is described. The chemistry and mineralogy of L.D. slags are shown to be generally similar to S. Yorkshire arc furnace slags, which have been success-fully used for road construction for many years, although both free lime and iron contents were found to be higher. Physical and mechanical properties are good but the slags' high density will result in lower "covering capacity"."Weathering" in stock piles is shown to significantly reduce free lime levels fairly rapidly although around 50 per cent of the mean "fresh free lime" content is still present even after two years treatment.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

Magnetic separation using particle rotation in a continuously rotating magnetic field offers very low to insignificant non-magnetic particle entrapment, and precise magnetic fractions. The precision of rotating magnetic field separations makes the method ideal for dry laboratory magnetic analysis work, where conventional laboratory magnetic separators can give misleading or uncertain data. The very low entrapment characteristics make the method ideal for entrapment-critical separations within the diamond exploration industry or in gold recovery. A single wet rotating magnetic field (RMF) unit is able to achieve a cleaner separation (at similar or better recovery rates) than a three-stage separation using conventional wet drum separators. The RMF separator is able to work effectively at particle sizes below 50 ¦m, and RMF separation could, at least in theory, be used down to single domain particle sizes. Rotating magnetic field (RMF) separation is carried out by magnetically spinning the particles at frequencies up to 300 Hz. The particle rotation itself may be used to roll the particles out of the separator. At angular velocities of 100 Hz, magnetic flocs are unable to form, and any entrapped particles are energetically expelled. In an RMF separator, the outer drum can be stationary while the inner magnet rotor rotates, allowing, for example, the injection of cleaning water underneath the separating magnetics to help remove small suspended non-magnetic particles.

The reduction of zinc from lead blast furnace slags using hydrogen was studied at 1300¦C as part of a laboratory investigation of zinc fuming. To perform the experiments, 300 g "spent slag" was melted in a crucible. Hydrogen was then injected into the slag through a lance and fresh blast furnace slag was added regularly in small quantities over a period of 40 minutes. Zinc added in the fresh slag was reduced and the zinc level of the bulk slag attained a steady state value of between 1 and 9% after about 10 minutes, depending on the gas injection rate. Because of the high reactivity of hydrogen, bulk supply of hydrogen to the slag was the rate limiting step at the flow rates used and it is believed that the gas-slag reactions in the system were at equilibrium. A partially/stabilized zirconia cell with a Ni/NiO reference electrode was immersed in the slags during the experiments and the steady/state oxygen potentials of the slags were measured. By using the experimental oxygen potential values and calculated values of the steady state concentrations of zinc in the offgas, the activity of ZnO in the slags was calculated from the Gibbs's free energy change for the reaction:

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.

The geotechnical and environmental aspects of heap leaching are very closely tied during design, operations and closure. Potential environmental impacts from heap leaching are mostly due to land disturbance and water quality issues, including both groundwater and surface water. Water quality issues are mostly related to containment design, which is primarily a function of proper sizing of the facilities and site specific liner design. Geotechnical analyses is the dominant discipline in providing cost efficient, operationally effective and environmentally sound heap leach facility designs. Much has been published on geotechnical aspects of heap leach design, for example Van Zyl, Hutchison and Kiel (1988) and Van Zyl (1987). This paper will emphasize a few specific aspects related to the geotechnical and environmental consideration for heap leach projects. These aspects are: ò site investigation; ò containment design; ò slope stability; ò heap flow dynamics; and ò closure design. Design of a heap leach project must consider not only the operating life but also closure and post-closure considerations. As a matter of standard practice, designing for closure is an extremely important concept. Not only is it important for environmental aspects, but experience also shows that projects designed for closure will be overall more economical for the total life cycle of the project. Closure considerations are also important during project feasibility evaluations to ensure that total life cycle costs are evaluated.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

Pitch-steering models have been developed for discretely advanced mining machines (such as heading machines and coal shearers) using small-angle geometry and there are illustrative examples of simulator predicted performance. Although simple linear models result from the analysis of open-based machines, sledge mounted machines require execution of a Linear Programming energy minimisation to determine the attitude of the machine base at each advance over the previously cut floor steps. An analytical approach is based on elastic beam concepts developed for such applications as longwall face conveyors, caterpillar tracked machines such as continuous miners and longhole drills. Simulation results for longhole drills show the expected performance of an automatic guidance system and the destabilizing effects of sensing deviation too far behind the drill bit. Certain drill bit boundary conditions are expected to assist TBM. steering studies in three dimensions.There is a real role in mining machine steering for the mathematical models used in flight simulators.

The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.

A mathematical model for estimating the liquid level in the hearth is presented. The analytical result was checked on a cold two-dimensional model and an additional boundary condition for the fundamental equation resulted. The applicability of the resultant equation was investigated on a cold model and a regression equation obtained for the average liquid level for Kashima No. 1 BF. Comparison of calculated and observed results were in fairly good agreement. It is concluded that the liquid level in the commercial furnace can be calculated from the measured values of pressure in the bosh and operating conditions.

Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. Geostatistics is now widely used in the mining industry in the estimation of ore reserves and terms like kriging, variogram and estimation variance are becoming well known. Ordinary Kriging (OK) has been found by some practioners to be a superior tool compared with other ore reserve estimators. However, kriging hasn't been the ultimate solution to difficulties which may arise in ore reserve estimation. Several additional geostatistical techniques have been recently developed for more efficient ore reserve estimation in some deposits, especially gold and other precious metals. These include indicator kriging and probability kriging which are useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

The Mobile Miner MM130 was delivered to Broken Hill in February 1992. During March the machine was extensively trialled on the surface to test manoeuvrability, climbing ability and muck handling prior to being trammed underground in April. The first cutting test on 30 April 1992 provided promising results. The machine has undergone continual development since it arrived in Broken Hill with aims of ensuring reliability and achieving performance goals. The paper gives a detailed account of recent performance comparing this with the predicted Performance.

For several years, the Geology Department of the University of Canterbury has hosted a series of postgraduate projects in the field of coal studies, supported principally by the Ministry of Energy and to a lesser extent by private companies. These projects have involved mainly West Coast Coalfields, and my own studies have focussed on inorganic geochemical aspects of West Coast coals. Because of the large number of potentially important analyte elements in coal, and the wide diversity of coals occurring in the West Coast region, this project has required a substantial amount of work to be spent on sample collection, sample preparation, development of analytical methods, and actual analysis. Considerable problems must be faced at the sampling stage: Can sufficient information be obtained from whole-seam composites, or should seams be sampled in plies. Ply analysis is preferable, but results of proximate analyses are usually available for composites only. Where multi-seam drillhole samples become available (eg Greymouth Coalfield, where some holes yielded more than six sampled seams), the ply option involves a dramatic increase in the number of samples. I have attempted to strike a workable compromise between geographical coverage of coalfields, and detailed sampling of individual seams at each locality. In many cases, sample material has been used jointly with Jane Newman who has carried out petrographic studies.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.
