This paper outlines software development and design work carried out by Mincom Pty Ltd in collaboration with Capricorn Coal Management (CAPCOAL) for computer based design of rehabilitated strip mine landforms at German Creek Mine. Current developments and future application areas for this software are also discussed in relation to other mines in Central Queensland. The development program was initiated in response to statutory requirements placed on mining companies in 1990 to produce a five year Plan of Operations which was to include a contour plan of the final rehabilitated mine landform at the end of the five year planning period. This plan was to be submitted to the Department of Resource Industries (DRI) by 1 December 1990. Due to the limited time given to prepare the plan, a work program was formulated in collaboration with Mincom Pty Ltd to develop suitable software to carry out the design work and provide the required plans and quantities. The software had to include computer based methods to allow design of the proposed landform in line with the rehabilitation strategy adopted by CAPCOAL at the time.

The ready availability of powerful desktop workstations, which combine 3D real-time graphics and processing speed better than that of supercomputers of a few years ago, now allows the cost-effective solution of real world geomechanics and underground mining strength simulations. The inclusion of geotechnical factors such as rock joints and porous flow on strength and stability are discussed together with the range of available deformation and failure models for soil, rock and concrete. This paper describes the capabilities provided by finite element graphics and analysis software for modelling and sequential investigation of both excavation and lining, or rock bolting, construction sequences. Examples of the use of finite element models in mining are also included in the paper, together with a discussion of the required people, software and computer hardware resources required to achieve timely and productive results.

This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

Investigations were carried out of burden distribution using a full scale model of the furnace top. Various charging sequences were used and large differences were found between ore charged as sinter-pellets and as pellets-sinter. These were attributed to the differences in the angle of repose between the two materials. Permeability index was defined which was independent of the driving rate from which a furnace resistance index was obtained for use in weekly reports. Results are summarised as a single expression between blast rates and pressures and the values of Qbl and Qmax are continuously measured to aid the operators in controlling the wind rate in the safe AP region. Results also indicate a reserve in capacity of No. 7 BF.

The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

The Carajßs Province presents several volcano-sedimentary sequences that comprise the Itacai·nas Supergroup. The rocks represent bimodal volcanism, and clastic and chemical sedimentation in relatively unstable basins subject to recurrent structural events with subsidence and volcanism. The Grpo Parß Group represents one of these sequences with mafic volcanic rocks that enclose discontinuous jaspilite lenses, with development of large high-grade orebodies (Fe >65 per cent). This unit is named the Carajßs Formation and presents peculiar characteristics compared to other iron districts in the world, thereby departing from the classic Lake Superior or Algoma iron formation types. Owing to the dense vegetation, lack of outcrops and harsh landscape, the structural analysis of the district can only be accomplished by combination of regional field work, detailed structural work on the open pits, and remotely sensed image interpretation, in this case Landsat ETM7, JERS-1 images and the SRTM digital terrane model. The regional trend of the several sequences of the area is approximately N-S and the structure is dominated by a flattened flexural fold system with axes moderately dipping WNW, intersected by several strike-slip faults subparallel to their axial plane. The Serra dos Carajßs represents an s-shaped synform-antiform pair, herein named the Carajßs Fold. This regional structure is partially disrupted by the Carajßs Shear Zone that divides it in the northern (Serra Norte) and the southern (Serra Sul) Ranges and also probably prepared the terrane with the development of pathways for mineralising hydrothermal fluids forming large high-grade massive iron bodies. Syntectonic granitic bodies played an important role in the structural evolution of the area as well. They caused localised ductile flattening deformation and thermal contact metamorphism in surrounding terranes. The Estrela pluton, for instance, was responsible for the discontinuity of the regional trend between the Serras do Rabo and Leste. The Carajßs Province is regionally the upper crustal product of a very shallowly eroded dome-and-keel geometry of Neo-Archaean volcano- sedimentary units intruded by syntectonic calc-alkaline intrusives and overlying pre-existing infracrustal rocks. The lithostructural data suggest continental-margin back-arc basin development and closure in an oblique collision belt, with N-S shallow crustal shortening, parallel to the inferred pre-existing strike of the stratigraphy.

The United States has more than 45 billion tons of economic coal reserves in seams above 10 feet thick and current underground production from thick seams represent less than three per cent of the total production. A tripling of underground production from thick seams is necessary within the next 10 years to meet U.S. coal production demands. An analysis of underground accident and production data is presented in the paper. A study of accident and injury distribution in different coal seam heights in the eastern and western part of the United States in seams ranging in thicknesses from 5 to 15 feet indicates that the seam thicknesses do not produce adverse impact on underground injury incidence. Accidents associated with roof falls and haulage account for about 70 per cent of underground mining injuries.

A paper describing the treatment of the Mary Kathleen uranium ores must necessarily be historical and confined mainly to a review of the four papers which have already appeared. Couche and Hartley (1958) described the development of the treatment process just prior to the commencement of operations in June, 1958. Harris, Boag and Hemingway (1961) described the treatment during the operations, and Wreford (1965) reviewed all aspects of the mine and mill, when operations were suspended in November, 1963. Harris and Steele ('1960 presented a paper especially describing the radiometric sorting operation. Some hitherto unpublished information is also presented in the paper to describe some of the peculiarities of the ore, indicate reasons for the adoption of the treatment flowsheet, and some interesting problems connected with this treatment.

The chemical oxidation kinetics of sphalerite by Fe(III) was studied at various temperatures and size fractions in sulphate media. The kinetics of Zn extraction followed a pore diffusion control mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 54-58 kJ mole. This figure, although high for a pore diffusion control process, is consistent with other studies carried out in sulphate media. An empirical statistical model, relating the extraction time to % Zn extraction, average particle size and temperature, is described by log 1 = 12.22 - 0.017% Ext. - 1.76 log D Av t - 2954 T Parallel studies were also carried out investigating the biological oxidation of sphalerite utilizing the acidophilic autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus Ferroxidans. The effect of such kinetic parameters as pulp density, particle size and Fe(III) on bacterial growth rate and consequently zinc extraction rate, were studied and where appropriate, optimum conditions for bacterial growth were specified. Based on the results of chemical and biological leaching studies, it was apparent that rapid zinc extraction from sphalerite was predominently due to oxidation by Fe(III). The biological oxidation process catalyses the oxidation and regeneration of Fe(III). The proposed combined chemical-biological leach system was simulated in semi continuous fashion. The changing characteristics of raw materials has highlighted the limitations that conventional vibrating screens have in the handling of fine wet sticky materials. These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. In order to illustrate the practical benefits to be gained by the extraction of fine materials ahead of subse quent processes particularly in the coal industry, the experiences gained in Ro-Pro installations in America, Australia, Europe and Britain are drawn upon.

Hydraulic Monitor mining at Solid EnergyÆs Spring Creek Mine has proven to be a safe and effective method of extracting steeply dipping thick seams at production capabilities approaching one million tonnes per annum.   This paper traces the development of Hydraulic Monitor mining from its initial introduction into old workings at Strongman Mine, its refinement at Strongman 2 in shallow, thick and steep workings, through to its introduction into the deep, very thick seams at Spring Creek Mine. This last step of the progression came with all the added complications that come with depth, particularly flammable gas.   This paper will describe the various changes in mining conditions that dictated the performance of the monitor, how the mine layouts were changed to adapt, and the various operational systems that were put in place, to allow a safe and productive operation.

This monograph presents a unified theory of adsorption and desorption of aurocyanide on activated carbon. This theory has proved useful for CIP/CIL carbon adsorption and Zadra and AARL elution process and equipment design; in accounting for the effects of various water qualities and process temperatures; and in the development of reagents to improve these processes. The theory presented is based on rigorous fundamentals : Classical Eyring theory links initial first order kinetics with Langmuir isotherm equilibria, and this isotherm is demonstrated for the first time to be a consequence of the activated complex postulate of Eyring theory. Simple extension to Freundlich conditions at high solution tenors is possible, but not presented. Supporting entropy data determined by the author includes practically all the pioneering CIP plants built in South Africa and Australia in the early 1980s.

The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

The history of the reduction of iron from its ores is lost in antiquity. Archreologists state that man has practised it for over four thousand years. Until comparatively recent times charcoal was the principal reducing agent for making metallic iron from its various oxidised ores. Coke was first used by iron founders in England in 1619, and its use spread gradually throughout the civilised world from then onwards. Indeed, the destruction of forests to obtain the requisite charcoal made the iron founders, both in England and America, extremely unpopular, and this hampered the iron industry to a considerable extent, until coal provided the metallurgist with a new and better fuel--coke which is used by most pyro-metallurgists today. The transition from wood to coal products for iron smelting had a profound effect on the location of iron works. Particularly was this the case in America where, in the infancy of the industry, practically each of the early States had its own iron producers, but as coal and coke replaced charcoal, there came about a concentration of the iron and steel industry around the coking coal deposits, and so today there are huge steel plants clustered around the soft coal basins in Pennsylvania and Illinois.The development of the iron and steel industry in Australia, which is comparatively recent by world standards, has been cradled in the coal basins of New South Wales. The first steel works of any consequence in this country were built near Lithgow, close by the mines which produced the coal for coking.Incidentally, these works were rather unique in that the three essential materials for iron and steel manufacture-ore, coal, and limestone-were found virtually at the works' back door.When, in 1912, the location of the proposed steel works for The Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. for smelting ore from Iron Knob in South Australia was considered, the site ultimately chosen was at Newcastle, almost on top of seams of satisfactory coking coal. One of the major factors which had determined the site of the steel works was the fact that, about 1912, three tons of coal were required to produce one ton of finished steel product, and the relative economics of ore and coal haulage were much in favour of bringing ore to the coal.

Hilton Mine is being developed as an integrated component of the Mount Isa operation, to achieve continuity of silver/lead/zinc production well into the next century. The mine has a chequered history from its discovery in 1947 through several periods of intense development activity, each of which has been curtailed due to the further development of the Isa Mine operation. This era has now passed; to sustain increased production rates at Mount Isa, there is a requirement for Hilton ore in 1989. The decision was made in 1983 to accelerate the programme of Hilton development by installing skip hoisting facilities in the main service shaft (P49), to facilitate the development of the mine to pre-production status. The Hilton development plan provides for the mining of selected orebodies, a broadening of the underground exploration drilling programme, and the establishment of significant mine infrastructure. Several technical challenges have been identified as important. The Hilton orebodies, although occurring in the same rock type as Isa Mine, are more faulted, jointed and intersected by intrusive dykes. The ore is more variable in terms of ore continuity, boundaries, grade and metal distribution and the mineralogy more complex. As a consequence the development of this project consists of a co-ordinated programme of mine exploration and development, rock mechanics investigations and metallurgical research and development work. Production will commence in 1986 at a rate of 1000 t/day using mechanized cut and fill techniques. It is planned to introduce sublevel open stoping and by 1996/97 the production rate will be 2.5 million t/yr.

The behaviour and deportment of indium during the precipitation of sodium jarosite from Fe2(S04)3 - Na2SO4 solutions were investigated. Indium is readily precipitated with sodium jarosite, and the extent of In precipitation increases as the In concentration of the solution increases. It was shown that In 3+ substitutes for Fe 3+ in the jarosite structure to form a nearly ideal solid solution series. On a molar basis, the precipitation of Fe is slightly favoured over that of In, and the difference is reduced as the pH increases. Sodium jarosite precipitation becomes kinetically rapid at temperatures >70¦C, but increasing temperatures in the range 70 to 150¦C affect neither the relative precipitation of In and Fe nor the composition of the jarosite product. Low Na2SO4 concentrations result in reduced product yields and jarosite precipitates in which H3O' > Na+. The hydronium-rich precipitates have reduced In contents. Increasing the ZnSO4 concentration of the solution slightly increases the quantity of jarosite formed and results in the incorporation of -0.3 per cent Zn in the jarosite structure. Otherwise, the presence of ZnSO4 has no significant effect on the composition of the jarosite. Seeding accelerates the rate of jarosite precipitation but has a negligible influence on the deportment of In. The jarosite precipitation reaction at 98¦C is relatively rapid and near-steady state conditions are achieved in - 6 h even in the absence of seed. The initially precipitated jarosite is slightly enriched in In with respect to Fe. The ferric ion concentration of the solution has a significant influence on both the amount of jarosite formed and its composition. In particular, the jarosites precipitated from dilute Fe3+ media have significantly enhanced In contents. Hence, it may be possible to recover - 25 per cent of the dissolved In, at the 1000 mg/L level, in a jarosite precipitate assaying - ten per cent In by the controlled oxidation-precipitation of sodium jarosite from a ferrous sulphate processing solution.

The combustion characteristics of Australian coals which contain high inertinite have been studied in a laboratory drop tube furnace and a Thermogravimetric Analyser. The pyrolysis chars and combustion residues were microscopically characterised using a modified coal petrography technique. Results indicated that the overall burnout of inertinite-rich Australian coals under pulverised fuel combustion conditions could be generally within a range of 97 - 99 per cent burnout. The studies showed that poor coal burnout cannot be generally related to high inertinite content in the Australian coals. The extent of coal burnout varies from coal to coal and vitrinite as well as inertinite may contribute to the unbumt chars in combustion residues. Combustion conditions had greater influence over char formation and coal burnout than the coal properties. However, under similar pf combustion conditions, coal rank and coal maceral composition had a strong influence over the coal combustion behaviours and final coal burnout. Simple correlations using coal properties may be used but with caution to determine coal volatile release and burnout at high temperature and rapid heating conditions.

JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The considerations that determined the installation of entirely new plant were as follows:(1) The need for more compressed air for underground work and more electric current for the extension of the slime-flotation plant for the recovery of zinc, as well as lead, as slime concentrates. An internationally recognised and uniform method for classification, categorisation and designation of mineral and energy resources is not yet available. With the increasing need for reliable and comparable coal resource data it is necessary to standardise the traditional classification procedures by quantifying the three basic evaluation criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For well documented deposits, geostatistical methods can considerably improve classification quality. A review is undertaken of major classification with particular emphasis on those that incorporate limits on estimation error.A geostatistically based algorithm for classifying coal resources within the current Queensland and New South Wales codes has been developed.Application of the classification algorithm for resources from a number of seams exhibiting different structural characteristics is assessed. The method is found to give classification results that closely reflect the error associated with an estimate of resource quantities based on current sampling densities.lbis requires a careful geostatistical analysis with an emphasis on geological awareness. Resource category restrictions although albitrarily assigned should remain constant for all deposits being compared. This requires some engineering judgement with additional interpretation also required for isolated and peripheral block.
