The elements of consistent structural de sign models for underground structures are explained. Such models should comprise at least ground properties, excavation and support methods, computational models for analysis, failure hypotheses, and in-situ monitoring. The fundamental characteristics of the interaction between ground and support are investigated. Then, plane strain models for soft ground tun- nelling and design models for rock tunnelling employing stress release at the tunnel face are elaborated. Some numerical evaluations are gi- ven in diagrams, comparing approaches of dif- ferent authors. Comments are presented on nume- rical three-dimensional models (visualized by structural models for mining in rock salt), on the interaction of in-situ monitoring and design, on structural safety for underground structures, and finally on the general develop- ment of structural design models in geo- Techniques.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan (Queensland) ore body presents problems other than those only of mining. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and fromhighly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. It is with these three latter descriptions of ore that this paper principally deals.Although the output from many stopes in the mine may usually be presumed beforehand to be either smelting or wet-treatment ore, yet it is never safe to take this for granted, and constant assaying is necessary. The paper describes the studies conducted to date on the short term adsorption/desorption of gases in coal from the point of view of developing techniques to predict imminent outbursting conditions in coal mines. A number of different parameters such as'dP express, K' and AV 0/60 etc. which have been effectively used overseas were studied on samples of coal from Westcliff and Leichhardt Colliery. Results indicate that these do not seem to be valid indices for predicting an outbursting condition. Based upon desorption isotherms, a new index defined as "L" has been developed which shows promising results. This index is in a position to differentiate the changes in the structures of coal and its proness to outbursts. The "LZ value determinations and its usefulness opens a new field where it would be possible to determine outbursting conditions from existing drill cores obtained during exploration studies or from long holes drilled in advance from underground workings. The index is more or less independent of the time elapsed between the extraction of a sample and the conduct of the test. The test for "L" can be conducted'on site or in the laboratory. The test is simple, easy to carry out and the "L" value for a sample can be calculated in less than 20 minutes. It could be adapted as a routine test for monitoring outburst conditions in mines.

This paper primarily describes the application of geology to the different mining methods employed in a large underground mine. The steeply dipping stratiform Silver/Lead/Zinc mineralisation at Mount Isa include up to 28 mineable orebodies. The orebodiea are mined by cut and fill, sublevel benching and sublevel open stoping; the method chosen depending mainly on orebody geomechanics.The sources and methods of data collection, and the interpretation process undertaken, are described. The paper emphasises the different geological input required, by each individual mining method, to provide the necessary production and strata control. This input contributes significantly to the success and efficiency of the operations.

This paper discusses the use of tapered roller bearings in conveyor idlers. It shows that in medium and high capacity systems, tapered roller bearings can offer significant cost and performance advantages. In the next ten years, conventional conveyors will face increased competition from unconventional belt conveyors, pneumatic systems, pipeline "slurry" systems, unit trains and so on. The conveyor industry must meet these challenges by innova- tive use of technology. Conventional belt conveyors must continue to show the lowest cost per tonne-km or lose their position in the market. Tapered roller bearings can contribute to the achievement of this goal. The concurrent resources boom and liquid fuel crises may well see a decline in the use of heavy trucks for bulk material handling over moderate distances 10 to 50 km. There appears to be a trend in the conveyor industry to go to higher speeds with improved belting in conven- tional widths. The transmission of more material over a given period of time will place more demands on conveyor idler bearings. Australia has in general followed the European practice of using deep groove ball bearings in conveyor idlers.

The smelting of concentrates and secondary materials has been subject to increasing challenges in recent years due to declining grades of feed materials, increasing impurity levels and ever more stringent environmental regulations. In addition there has been a growing focus on maximising the efficiency of energy usage and recovery of values. New opportunities have been created with rising metals prices and improved systems for the collection of secondary materials, giving rise to a need for more flexible process solutions.This paper focuses on a number of specific cases where a process solution has been developed using the Outotec« Ausmelt Process to meet particular feed material challenges and overcome limitations inherent when employing traditional pyrometallurgical processes.The first case involves the development and commercial implementation of a smelting process to recover values from zinc smelting residues typically deposited into dams as a waste product. The second case describes the application of the Ausmelt process for the smelting and converting of secondary copper feed materials, including e-waste. These materials contain a wide range of metals and plastics and need to be processed appropriately to maximise the recovery of values whilst avoiding environmental problems. The third case study covers the smelting of nickel concentrates containing elevated magnesia levels as well as nickel bearing catalysts with high alumina content, neither of which can be readily processed when employing traditional pyrometallurgical technologies. Renison is a world-class ore deposit that has been mined for over 100 years. It currently has reserves of 5.06 Mt @ 1.88 per cent Sn and a projected mine life of 8.5 years. Recent advances in the geological understanding of the deposit have been associated with detailed structural and geophysical investigations accompanied with the discovery and exploitation of the Rendeep orebodies. Mineralisation is linked to the forceful emplacement of the Devonian Pine Hill Granite that resulted in a complex brittle (-ductile) deformation of the Eo-Cambrian host stratigraphy. Dilation jog development on the Federal-Bassett Fault in the Federal and Rendeep areas provided access for cassiterite-rich magmatic hydrothermal fluids responsible for carbonate replacement Mineralisation.

Evaluation of previous studies of multi-layer perceptron type artificial neural networks in the modelling of the deformability behaviour of rock have suggested that a deviation from the standard method of laboratory testing of rock under triaxial loading at constant confining stresses and constant axial strain rates may be inappropriate when the data produced are used to train an artificial neural network. In this paper, preliminary results of adopting such a strategy are reported. Of specific concern is the establishment of a suitable schedule for the stress path during testing. Furthermore, the training element of back propagation optimisation was directed towards prediction of new stresses given old stresses and old strain increments. Adoption of this method of supervisation in artificial neural network training facilitates the integration of the trained neural network within existing numerical methods used in rock mechanics. The target code was a finite difference Lagrangian formulation for the analysis of continua. Sandstone rock taken from a quarry in the UK was used in the study which showed that the method has great potential.

The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

The Kangiara mine is located within the Middle to Upper Silurian Hawkins Volcanics of the Douro Group near Yass, New South Wales. The deposit is a po1ymetallic type within a rhyolitic tuff.The ore minerals comprise pyrite, sphalerite, botryoidal sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, marcasite, tetrahedrite, bismuthinite, bismuth, silver, electrum, chalcocite, covellite, and digenite. The gangue minerals are quartz, barite, calcite, and the host rock. Locally sericite occurs.Several distinct ore types can be recognized, mainly on the basis of their macroscopic textural appearance, and it is inferred from these general features that the mineralization had a submarine volcanic-sedimentary origin similar to that of the Kuroko deposits in Japan.

Consideration of the Establishment o£ a Central Testing or Proving Station.HISTORICAL.Since the introduction of improved high air pressure drilling machines in the early part of the century, efforts have been made to develop the quality of the rock drill bit, in order to take advantage of the greater increase of power output per unit weight of the machines (1). This resulted in the change from solid to hollow steel in the second decade of the present century (2).As the greatest sufferers from the dread disease of silicosis (3), it seemed appropriate that the South African gold mines should be the first to use hollow drill steel. Since then solid drills have become practically obsolete for mining purposes.Water is used with hollow steel drills not only to keep the cutting end cool, but also to assist in preventing the formation of undue dust during drilling. It is of interest to note, however, that water fed through hollow steel or sprayed into the air is only partially effective in removing fine dust particles a few microns in diameter, which particles are said to be the most potent in producing silicosis (3a).So far as the composition of "straight" carbon steel drills is concerned, a commission appointed by the Johannesburg mines carried out a very exhaustive series of tests on drill steels.These drills were manufactured from steel made by all the standard methods, including Swedish, Bessemer, crucible, openhearth, and, to a limited extent, electric furnace steel. It should be remembered that the commissioners' report was issued in 1913, when hollow drill steel had not yet been introduced. Only solid steel drills were then in use.

Not so many years ago the reason for an inadequate result from a geophysical survey was insufficient data or poor quality data. In many instances such as gravity, magnetic and radiometric surveys, both these constraints are vanishing or have vanished. High quality sensors, improved data storage, accurate differential GPS and top quality interpretive software now enable the interpreter to understand not just the cause of the anomaly but the host environment in which it resides. Examples of potential field data and also data provided by the more complex electromagnetic systems, from Australia Ghana, West Africa, are used as illustrations.

HPGR technology has been used at a number of magnetite mines in the world and have significant energy advantages over SAG and AG technologies. The early design at Los Colorados in Chile has been in operation for more than 12 years - and operates very successfully though only reduces the feed size to -5mmThe Whyalla project magnet design pushed the concept to produce a preconcentrate of 80%-350micron - a significant reduction on previous plants though with some wear problems in the early years. The Karara design backpedalled slightly and will only crush to 80%-1.8mm.However, the design issues of using a HPGR to further reduce the feed size continue to be explored. The aim is to reduce the process risks associated with wear and also to reduce the complexity of the downstream process - with consequent benefits in terms of capital and operating costs.The designs are being developed for a couple of projects - one planned to produce 20Mtpa of concentrate with the potential to not only remove SAG and AG milling but also ball milling. The concept is to use multiple passing through the HPGR since, on the data available, the efficiency of the HPGR to reduce size does not significantly diminish as the feed size is reduce. Direct smelting of copper in a single vessel has long been the extractive metallurgist's dream. Such a process offers the important alvantage. of (i) maximum use of the energy available from oxidizing the sulphur and iron of the concentrate: (ii) restriction of SO2 emissions to a single constant-strength source; (iii) minimum materials handling and (iv) elim-ination of at least one process step. Extensive developmental work was carried out in the 1960's and 1970's to implement such single-step processes. Some of the processes reached the prototype stage and it appeared that copper smelting technology was on the thresthold of a new, efficient, minimum-pollution era. Since that time, however, the forward thrust has slowed and single-step copper smelting is still a process of the future.The paper describes the potential advan-tages of single-step smelting; its history and current status; and the reasons why it has not been adopted industrially. It concludes that the potential benefits of single-step smelting are powerful and that many of the difficulties encountered in the 1970's will be overcome in the 1980's.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. These propert lies have been determined for suites of whole particles of flotation concentrates, mounted without further preparation. The facility is also well adapted to the measurement of general Istereological parameters. The computer control software is based on an operating system which includes the device drivers and which is linked to FORTRAN programs [containing the procedural algorithms. Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled scopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench scope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in hench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also descrihed.

In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

fhis paper describes investigations into drainage of gas from the solid to control outbursts. Initial studies conducted on drainage of shear zones showed that, given enough time, these can be successfully drained. Once drained, they can be intersected and driven through without any activity of outbursts. The results of programme of investigations to determine parameters for drainage from the solid show that gas flow rates from the Bulli Seam on the average are about 2 litres/min/metre length of borehole. But when shear zones are intersected, the flow rates could be as high as 8 litres/min/ metre length of hole. Shear zones can be picked up from pressure measurements 50 - 60 m away and this could give sufficient time to drill through these zones and drain them in advance. Systematic drainage of Bulli Seam at West Cliff Colliery could eliminate or reduce frequency of outbursts considerably. At present drainage holes are being drilled systematically in the seam, with drainage installations on the surface. Gas purity of 80% methane is being delivered at the surface plant.

In 1972 the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia was recognised as a stratigraphic horizon with significant potential for high grade iron ore reserves. Within the Newman area the Marra Mamba Iron Formation has been subdivided into four strati- graphic units: Lower BIF member, Middle BIF and shale member, Upper BIF member and Upper shale member - and a standard natural gamma log reference section compiled for the entire formation. The recognition of the Upper shale member as an additional unit contrasts to the previously proposed stratigraphy. Enrichment of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation to ore grade (0)8 percent calcined Fe) in the Newman area is restricted to the Upper BIF member and to a lesser extent to the Middle BIF and shale member. Typical ore from Orebody 29 is friable interbedded martite-ochreous goethite, signifi aptly different both physically and chemically from the Brockman Iron Formation ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. Large scale customer acceptance trials (in excess of 4 million tonnes) have shown that Marra Mamba ore crushed to fines and blended with Mt. Whaleback fines in a ratio of up to 15:85 forms an acceptable sinter feed.

Nauru Phosphate, which is one of the world's highest grade deposits discovered to date, contributed in 1969, 2.2 million tons of the total world production of 77.7 million tons. Phosphate production, which is the major source of revenue for the island nation, is carried out by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation, headed by a Government appointed Board of Directors. The complete mining operation, including ship loading techniques, is discussed along with proposals at present being investigated to upgrade the Quality of the product.
