The Mt Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Following the evolution of the mine plan through a number of stages, the ‘sublevel shrinkage (SLS) with continuous fill’ mining method was implemented in 2010 to extract the Mt Wright orebody. The production front in this mining method is similar to a sublevel cave (SLC) operation; however, backfill is placed into the top of the production zone as opposed to requiring the overlying strata to cave.Continuous fill to replace the void created by extracting the ore was required to manage the potential risks associated with the proximity of infrastructure to the footwall, associated long-term stability and air blast potential due to the limited ‘cavability’ of the material within the cave zone. The available fill material was sourced from a disused waste dump from a previous open pit operation, which introduced further technical and economic risks associated with dilution from ‘no grade’ broken material. Procedures and processes to manage these risks have been incorporated into the operation of the mine.Despite encountering a number of challenges, the SLS method has been in use for approximately three years at Mt Wright and has proven to be viable economically, technically and operationally. Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. GENTLEMEN, I have to thank you very much for the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me President of the Institute for this year. On behalf of resident members, I have to offer the visitors a very cordial welcome to Mount Morgan, and to tell them that all arrangements have been made to enable them to inspect the mine and works at their own convenience, and to supply them with any particulars they may need.It is very pleasing indeed to see such a large gathering, especially on account of the long journeys many have undertaken in order to be present. The first congress in Queensland, about eleven years ago, was attended by a comparatively small number of members, and a rather long time has been allowed to pass in consequence. The large attendance at this meeting encourages the holding of meetings in Queensland more frequently. Owing to the long distances, and the number of mining centres in Australia and New Zealand, we cannot expect to meet oftener than once in six or seven years in...

Coal washing practice can be improved not only by critical examination of the plant being operated but also by studying plants operated in other areas. The developments at the Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. plants are discussed in relation to experiences there as well as developments which have taken place in Queensland in recent years. Early A.I.S. problems involved small coal cleaning in heavy medium cyclones and flotation. A proposed future plant flowsheet for A.I.S. is considered in the light of these experiences. Reference is made to plants operated by the Thiess, Peabody, Mitsui Coal Company Pty. Ltd. at Moura and the Utah Development Company's plants at Blackwater and Goonyella in the development of coal washing prac- tice in Australia.

The paper presents, for the first time, a complete mathematical model of the flow of gases in packed beds which describes the processes of gas-mechanics in iron blast furnaces and other shaft type smelting units. Good correlation between calculated and experimental results was obtained confirming the adequacy of the model. It is shown that the uniformity of gas distribution is related to the tuyere size and the extent of its protrusion into the furnace and that these variables may be used to regulate gas distribution across the furnace diameter. It is also concluded that furnace height has no significant influence on gas distribution. The necessity for a mathematical description of raceway phenomena has been experimentally proved. Conclusions from theory are shown to have profound implication to furnace design and operation.

The proximity of the Town of Kalgoorlie to the Mount Charlotte mine necessitates that charge weight per delay be limited in order to keep surface vibration levels within acceptable limits and to reduce damage to underground workings. The mining system requires that large mass blasts must be used to recover pillars and therefore a large number of separate delays are needed. Until recently all blasting has been done electrically, fired from mains, but with the introduction of large diameter blastholes (165mm diameter) this firing system was inadequate. Various firing systems were considered, but after extensive trials a non-electric sequential firing system was chosen. This system fulfilled all criteria of blast design, was relatively straight forward in charging technique and had a very simple primary initiation system. Although initially designed for large mass blasts, the non-electric firing system is now used for all large hole blasting and in a simpler form for small (57mn diameter) holes.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste land form. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using the Daydream embankment at Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG's) Cloudbreak Operations as a case study.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

The Wiluna mining operations are centred near the township of Wiluna 750 kilometres north-east of Perth and 600 kilometres east of Geraldton.The Wiluna gold mines produced over two million ounces of gold, predominantly by roasting the refractory sulphide ores, before closing in 1947. In the period 1984 to 1992, 668 000 ounces of gold has been produced from free milling oxide ores and the retreatment of tailing. A plant capable of treating the refractory sulphide ores using the bacterial oxidation, Biox technique was commissioned in March, 1993.The Wiluna lode deposits are hosted by a sequence of very low grade metamorphosed mafic flows at the northern end of the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt. A strike slip fault system provided conduits for fluid migration; ore deposition occurred at favourable sites along the faults. Satellite mines at Gourdis and Wiluna South provide laterite and lode style oxide ores.The different styles of deposit and ore types at the Wiluna mining operations require a flexible approach to resource estimation and grade control practices.

The gold adsorption capacity of ash-char and ion exchange resin Zerolit F.F. (I.P.) was evaluated by obtaining Freundlich isotherms in the presence of selected variables. It was found that the presence of Na , 2+, Ca 2+ cations and SO4 , CN , S Z, 0 2- Zn anions prompted adsorption of gold onto the char and reduced gold adsorption capacity of the resin. Temperature, particle size of adsorbent and pH of solution were found to influence the gold adsorption capacity of char and the resin. The most efficient desorbent for gold adsorbed on the ash char was S2 ions. Optimum sulphide concentrations were found in the region of 1% Na2S. Investigation into the concentration of gold from actual carbon contaminated gold residue dumps in Kalgoorlie area onto ion ex- change resin showed limited success in one case and not so in another. Maximum gold adsorption by the resin appeared when cyanidation and sulphidization treatments were carried out simultaneously in the presence of the resin.

The Gordonstone Project with a capital cost in excess of $500 million will become the largest underground coal mine in Australia. The project development decision was taken on 31 July, 1990 and at 31 May, 1991 construction was approximately 35 per cent complete. The first train of processed product coal will be railed to Gladstone during December 1992. The general theme of this paper therefore will address the planning and development processes at Gordonstone particularly the interrelatedness of technical, production, construction and environmental disciplines to ensure success during operations.

The paper poses certain questions relating to mine design aspects of deep shaft pillars. It then explores these questions in relation to Western Deep Levels (South) where a sub-shaft system is to be sunk to 4 000 metres below surface to exploit two narrow tabular reefs in the down dip extension of the mine workings. After brief discussion of some broad considerations, the findings of a major rock mechanics investigation are reviewed. Some overall conclusions as well as the outcomes of separate studies of the anticipated behaviour of shaft pillars on each of the two reef horizons are outlined. To help meet the challenge of mine finding at the start of the 21st century, the exploration geophysicist will have at his command a powerful range of tools, some new, some improved, and some which already exist today but are as yet little used. Remote sensing, using satellite and aircraft-based multi-spectral scanners, will provide the means for routinely mapping the surface distribution of certain carbonate rocks, clay and ferrous alteration minerals, based on the analysis of solar reflectance spectra. Time and emission-spectral resolved laser-induced fluorescence will likewise map the distribution of certain ore and pathfinder minerals, as well as certain skarn zones, all potentially related to ore deposits. The GPS (Global Positioning System), based on 18 orbitting satellites, will provide a universal, three dimensional, all weather navigation system which will completely supplant all existing aerial navigation systems, and greatly facilitate aerial surveying and automated processing and presentation of the data. Aeromagnetic gradiometer measurements will provide higher geometric resolution which will yield better definition of individual geological units. Multi-method ground geophysical surveys will be greatly expedited through the use of portable microcomputer-based, multi-sensor instruments. These instruments will interface with other intelligent devices for automated processing, presentation and interpretation of the ground field data. Borehole geophysics will come into more general use, both for at-hole measurements, especially using active nuclear techniques for grade determination, and for remote detection using a variety of electrical, magnetic, seismic and other methods.

In dense medium processes for the beneficiation of minerals the consumption of medium (generally ferrosilicon) represents a major component of the operating cost. This provides a strong incentive for improvements in heavy medium recovery circuit design and operation. A major thrust in heavy medium plant design over the past decade has therefore been towards circuits which reduce medium losses. In this paper recent trends in plant design are examined in relation to the factors infl uencing circuit performance and medium losses. Operational details ' which have a significant effect on losses are discussed and illustrated by means of plant and pilot plant test data, with particular emphasis on the performance of wet drum magnetic separators. While the emphasis is on reducing the consumption of the high-cost ferrosilicon medium used in minerals beneficiation, most of the principles described in this paper are equally relevant to the design and operation of magnetite recovery circuits for coal preparation plants.

Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

As a result of commissioning No.5 B F, 2670m3 inner volume, in March 1972, the largest B F in Australia; new expertise in maintenance, furnace operating practices and design have been obtained. This experience has also been extended to the other furnaces. A series of operating problems were con- fronted; all parts of the furnace, including the hearth side walls and bottom,were adversely affected. In December 1977, serious hearth wall wear was detected at No.5 B F, and a potential hearth breakout was averted. Hearth wear in No.4 B F was discovered in March 1979, and emer- gency underhearth cooling was installed to reverse an extremely advanced hearth bottom erosion. Hearth behaviour of No.5 B F oampaign 1972-1978 and`No.4 B F campaign commencing 1972, has been studied and discussions on the causes, effects and measures undertaken to protect the hearths are presented in this paper.

Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

Hypogene alteration zones have been described as a precursor to high-grade haematite deposits in Australia, Brazil and elsewhere. This alteration is described as being below or distal and is typically magnetite-carbonate-silicates reflecting Mg - Fe metasomatism. This paper describes, without genetic implication, the mineral zonation and possible structural control on mineralogic variation within the Tilden Mine, a concentrating grade haematite deposit in Michigan, USA. In contrast to the high-grade deposits, these variations are not peripheral to the orebodies but are the ore. The deposit occurs within the Negaunee Iron Formation, along the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup basin. The regional structure is a fault-bounded west plunging syncline within the crustal scale Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which forms the boundary between Archean granite-greenstone and gneissic terranes. Local structure consists of second-order anticlines and synclines with variable northwest and southwest plunges. The interaction of sedimentation and diagenesis within growth fault controlled basins, along with a possible metamorphic and/or hydrothermal overprint has resulted in a complex series of ore types. For modelling purposes, the deposit is divided into geologic domains based on both lithology and metallurgical response in the laboratory and in the plant. Mineralogic variation is recognised within individual mineral grains; at blast pattern (10 - 15 m) and development drill hole (100 m) scales.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

The theoretical and experimental studies have been done to clarify the hearth flow of iron and slag. The results of dissections show that the hearth can be treated as a packed bed of coke hav- ing good permeability with a coke-free layer at the bottom of the hearth. 3-dimensional numerical calculations of hearth flow with and without a coke-free layer are carried out, and the results are assured by a water model simulation. The influences of a coke-free layer on the iron flow and the discharge route of iron and slag are examined. The 3-dimensional flow pattern can be represented simply by the travelling time, which depends on characteristically the profile of coke-free layer and the quantity of iron in the hearth. Those flow parameters could be obtained by the results of radioisotope tracer test ( Co for iron flow, and Sc for slag flow) at several furnaces. As a result, it is found that the coke-free layer repeats the cycle of appearance and disappearance at several-month intervals. This cycle corres- ponds to large temperature fluctuation at the bottom of hearth. The relation between iron flow and skull (solidified iron, coke and deposited graphite mixed layer) on the hearth brick was studied by the model experiment and the thermal analysis based on the indications of thermocouples installed in the bottom of the hearth. If a thin coke-free layer is formed on the skull, a fast iron flow is generated in the layer, and melts away the skull. The growth and melting of skull produces the fluctuation of thermal load on a bottom brick, causing brick Damage.
