The Quiruvilca district, located 80 km east of Trujillo in north central Peru (Fig. 1), has produced over eight million tons of Cu-Pb- Zn-Ag ore from approximately 60 veins since 1789. "Quiruvilca means "sacred tooth" in Quechua, the lingua franca of the Incas. The expression refers to a prominent volcanic neck exposed several kilometers northeast of the district. The district covers an area of approx- imately 24 km2. The mines occupy the eastern quarter; workings underlie 6.7 km2 with a developed vertical range of 280 m. All pres- ently operating workings are owned by Corpora- cion Minera Nor Peru S.A., a subsidiary of ASARCO Incorporated. The oldest rocks in the area are Lower Cretaceous clastic sedimentary rocks exposed 7 km to the east. Lithologies include sand- stone, siltstone, shale, coal seams, and carbonates (Cossio, 1964). These rocks were folded and affected by regional low-grade metamorphism during the early Tertiary, 40-65 m.y. (Hollister, 1977).

The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

Early attempts at estimation of stress wave damage in blasting by use of finite element analysis met with limited success due to numerical instabilities that prevented calculations from being carried to late times. An improved damage model based on microcrack growth in tension allows finite element calculations which remain stable at late times. Estimation of crater profiles for blasting experiments in granite demonstrate successful simulations with this model.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. Alkali emissions are one of the environmental challenges facing alumina refineries. Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is undertaking a number of initiatives to continuously improve its environmental performance. One of these is a program aimed at the reduction of alkali emissions. Alkali emissions originate from a number of sources (eg elevated open tanks), and its level depends on a number of process parameters/ mechanisms (ie splash filling, thermal currents in tanks, streams discharged from a pipe, tank temperatures, atomisation) and climatic conditions (eg wind speed and direction, rain, etc). Under normal operating conditions, there is a continuous low level of alkali emissions from the plant. Certain vessels within the plant have been identified as major contributors to this level of emission, while certain activities within the plant contribute to a temporary elevation (æspikeÆ) of alkali emissions. QAL developed a method using phenolphthalein-treated pads to measure emissions within and outside QAL boundaries. These provide no information about mass emission rates but are important for detecting if alkali material is present. Since mass emission rates are important for determining if improvements in emissions are made, QAL identified the need to design an improved sampling method. Following the development and implementation of a sampling and analysis method to monitor alkali emission concentrations, QAL is conducting a number of feasibility studies evaluating a range of alkali emission reduction options. The alkali measurement method will be used to track and demonstrate progress in this environmental initiative. This paper will discuss the measurement method and emission reduction options being evaluated.

Since the 1950's drilling has been rapidly mechanised. First from hand held drills with air legs to pneumatic jumbos, then to more effective hydraulic jumbos. Development of underground drilling equipment naturally could not have stopped here. Hydraulic drilling saw an improvement in drilling capacity and efficiency after the introduction of second generation drifters in the early 1980's. Also in the early 1980's a few equipment suppliers started to study how to improve the efficiency in operating the rigs. The first computerised rigs for tunnelling were delivered to work sites in mid 1980's. At the same time a few computerised longhole drills started drilling in mines.

Firedamp drainage has become an essential part of many mine environmental systems, and new applications are arising. Installations are evolving further to satisfy ever changing basic requirements, standards, and iniilny needs. In this paper, water seal, vacuum based installations are considered, as well as moni- toring, protective and control systems which have been developed for continuous, manless, and trouble free operation. Some factors affecting plant capacity and extractor per- formance are identified and assessed. Fewer and fewer mines are able nowadays to satisfy coal prod- uction and firedamp control requirements solely by air dilution or by air dilution and underground firedamp extraction plants. Global cement production accounts for about five per cent of man-made CO2 emissions (WBCSD, 2002). Such operating practices will increasingly be considered unsustainable, unless significant reductions in environmental impact can be realised by the industry.Slag is a high volume waste product from ironmaking, with about 300 kg of slag being produced per ton of iron. Critically, one ton of slag waste, if used as a replacement feedstock for Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), can prevent around one ton of emitted CO2 since no calcining is required. Slag cement blends can also show superior properties compared to OPC, such as lower heats of hydration and higher late strengths, but more development is needed to overcome their low early strengths. Rapid quenching of molten slag is required to produce æhydraulically-activeÆ binder when reacting with OPC; but water quenching can also require between five to ten tons of water per ton of slag at the plant. æDryÆ granulation (atomisation) is emerging as an alternative technology, the resulting solid product does not require drying, and possibilities exist for recovering heat energy from the hot slag.CSIRO Minerals has well-developed skills and equipment in pilot-scale pyrometallurgical treatment, and granulation of molten slag, including traditional wet, and also dry methods. Techno-economic desktop studies can also be used to help quantify factors such as value-adding of treated waste products, potential reductions in CO2 emissions and carbon credits, reductions in water consumption, and the possible decreased energy costs associated with fine grinding of dry slag granulate.The authors will present preliminary results from slag atomisation/dry granulation testwork (0.5 - 2.5 kg scale) and associated modelling studies, conducted using a æsyntheticÆ and industrial ironmaking slag. Outcomes from a techno-economic study on production of cement utilising wet or dry atomised slag granulate will also be discussed in detail.

Rosebery mine has had over 100 years of mining activity. The reserve has remained static for the last eight years with an expected mine life of six years. A move to rectify this was made in 1994 with the birth of the Deep Exploration Project (DEP). $45 M was committed to drill 100 km of underground exploration diamond drilling and develop 5.5 kin of decline aiming to add 9.5 Mt to the reserves and minimise lead time for development of P and K lenses discovered in the early-1990s. In 1996 this aim was expanded with the objective to build the resource base to 20 Mt by June 2000 allowing the mill to operate at 1.0 Mtpa (0.9 Mt from underground). Preliminary results of the project to-date are outlined and exploration diamond drilling techniques and strategies are described.

The Fitzpatrick Orebody is a three and a half million tonne fault bounded portion of the early-middle Proterozoic Broken Hill Orebody.The Fitzpatrick Orebody was discovered in 1975 by diamond drilling from the 36 Level Exploratory Drive. This followed persistent geologically oriented exploration and a courageous decision by mine management to deepen No. 3 Shaft to provide exploratory development across the Globe Vauxhall Shear and allow effective drilling of the target area.The stratiforrn oebody consists of three lenses, the lead rich No. 2 and 3 Lenses and smaller zinc lode. They represent a down plunge extension and boudinaged, fault-bounded portion of the main Broken Hill ore lenses. The surrounding host rocks are extensively faulted and jointed due to complex history of movement on the bounding shears. This results in extremely poor ground conditions during mining. The ore was delineated for mining development using three dimensional fan drilling from exploratory and hanging wall drive drill sites.

The resource estimation of lateritic deposits, such as Aurukun, presents specific issues related to the lateral changes in thickness and elevation of the various horizontal layers (or zones) within the deposit where the x and y dimensions are orders of magnitude greater than the z dimension. The objective was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) block model that retained the vertical and lateral variation inherent in deposits of this type to allow full optimisation of the production plan without prior selection of an economic portion (enriched bauxite layers) of the profile at the resource estimation stage. The Aurukun bauxite deposit is held by Chalco Australia Pty Ltd (Chalco) and forms part of the world-class Weipa bauxite province, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The bauxite is predominantly pisolitic with an upper boehmite-rich zone and lower gibbsite-rich zone. The bauxite consists of both in situ and reworked domains, is overlain by a thin soil horizon and has kaolinite clay as a transitional base. A portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was utilised on site, in addition to elemental assay, on each drill sample to determine the mineralogy, in particular levels of boehmite, gibbsite, kaolinite and reactive silica. As part of the scope of work, a field program was undertaken using large diameter Boart Longyear sonic drilling to acquire detailed density measurements across the deposit to allow compliance with Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) reporting requirements. Interpretation of the stratigraphy was conducted on a hole by hole basis with definition of the zone layering based on stratigraphy, geochemistry and mineralogy. The zone boundaries were then modelled as 3D surfaces and used to constrain a block model. The block model estimation used the ordinary kriging method, with the estimation done in unfolded space and then refolded, therefore maintaining the zones irrespective of thickness or orientation. The unfolding process converts the real-world positions for both blocks and informing samples to a scaled position relative to the roof and floor of each zone. Analysis of the data and variography were also undertaken in unfolded space. The x and y dimensions are unchanged, but the z dimension is a relative position. The effect of the unfolding and limits on number of samples per hole is to æpushÆ the informing sample search sideways but within the stratification, rather than vertically. This honours the strong vertical zonation within the bauxite profile. The JORC Code requires that the stated resource must have æreasonable prospects for economic extractionÆ. This is a qualitative rather than quantitative definition. A number of selection criteria to define a resource roof and floor were developed in consultation with the project engineers and owners to meet these criteria. The vertical selection of material to include in the resource highlights the variation in the development (and destruction) of the bauxite profile from area to area within the deposit.

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970's emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

A low-grade disseminated nickel sulphide serpentinite ore from W.A. had a relatively high permeability after drying. Various techniques indicated that the permeability resided within a fine network of fibrous vein- lets and especially within coarse cracks along which the sulphides lay. The ore minerals were therefore open to selective extraction by chemical leaching. A IM ammonia-7.8 wt.o "ammonium carbonate" solution, oxygenated at 1 bar oxygen pressure and about 23¦C, released nickel, copper and cobalt from the sulphides, leaving a permeable residue of goethite, while calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations remained negligible in the leachant. The nickel and copper was electrodeposited directly from the pregnant liquor in a deposit which included 16.5 wt.% sulphur. Enhanced copper/ nickel ratios early in the extraction suggested that valleriite (not amenable to flotation) was leached preferentially. Th$ controlling influence of the pore structure was demonstrated by the dependence of leaching rates on the size of the ore particles used, and on the measured porosity of different ore samples. A 2mm size was probably the optimum for exposing sulphides to the leachant. Leaching was accelerated by increasing the temperature and oxygen pressure.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath mid- ocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and OIB, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100,000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50,000 years prior to eruption.

With conventional undercutting sequence the infrastructure on the production level often has a short serviceable life before major rehabilitation is necessary and is characterised by high maintenance costs. The abutment stress zone is the main cause of this situation. The application of the pre-undercut caving method variant can increase the availability and utilisation of the production level When a pre-undercut is used development and construction are carried out underneath a previously undercut area, far away from the abutment stress zone, under more favourable stress conditions. This paper describes the design principles and the relevant results from the application of the pre-undercut variant over three years to the Esmeralda sector of El Teniente mine. The aspects described are the undercut-extraction, the undercut-development and construction distances, the geometry and drawbells opening, cave extraction rates, and the rate and height of undercutting.

The Harima works were established in 1964 and started operation in 1966. The initial capacity was 3500 t/month of zinc and 1500 t/month of lead. Until 1990 a lot of improvements had been made and the capacity had increased 6600 t/month of zinc and 2200 t/month of lead without enlarging the furnace size. During the ten weeks campaign shut-down at the end of 1990, many modifications were carried out including the enlargement of the furnace shaft area. By these changes, the capacity has gone up to 7500 t/month of zinc and 2500 t/month of lead. In the sinter plant, the amount of SO2 rich gas supplied to the acid plant was raised to 50 000 Nm3/h from 43 500 Nm3/h. An electrostatic precipitator was adopted instead of a venturi scrubber to clean the rich gas. Oxygen enrichment has been continuously operated since August 1991, because the furnace capacity is more than the rate of sinter production. Utilisation of the sinter plant is high being as much as 97 per cent and the sulphur burning rate has been increased. In 1990 the furnace was replaced except the hearth. The shaft area was enlarged to 19.4 m2 from 15.3 m2. The target blast was designed to be more than 36 000 Nm3/h. Tuyere layout was changed to prevent slag breakouts. Due to these modifications shaft condition has been very good. Automatic launder jacket cleaners were installed to increase the lead cooling efficiency. Many other improvements and developments were also made. Coke powder injection from the tuyeres has been successfully operated since April 1987.
