"Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. The aims of this paper are to present the governing science, verify the performance and demonstrate the potential engineering applications of a computational simulator for in situ leach mining of non-ferrous minerals. Assuming that the target mineral is deposited either uniformly within rock matrixes (matrix-hosted) or on fracture walls (fracture-hosted), in situ leaching can be treated as reactive flow and transport in geological media (porous media for matrix-hosted ore deposits and fractured media for fracture-hosted ore deposits). Under this treatment, the processes of in situ leach mining for non-ferrous minerals can be quantified through several sets of equations and these coupled equations have been numerically solved. The computational simulator has been applied to the simulations of one-, two-, and three-dimensional in situ leaching cases. The computational simulator, together with laboratory and in situ leaching tests, can be used to:optimise the leaching chemistry; optimise the in situ scale mining operations; scale up the in situ scale test operation to a full-scale mining operation; and evaluate the post-mining environmental restoration plan.

Experiments have been carried out to establish whether time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is able to differentiate monolayer and multilayer coverage of thiol collectors on sulfide minerals. The systems investigated were those for which x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is able to provide an independent determination of the extent of coverage, and included diethyldithiophosphate (DTP) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) on chalcocite, DTP on Ag2+MS prepared by sulfidising metallic silver, and isobutyl xanthate (BX) and MBT on galena. For monolayer adsorption of MBT on chalcocite, peaks from MBTû but not Cu(MBT)û ions were evident. For multilayer coverage, Cu(MBT)2û ions were clearly present, notwithstanding the fact that other data had identified the principal multilayer species as Cu(MBT). For adsorbed DTP on copper and silver sulfides, DTPû and metal(DTP)Hû peaks were observed for monolayer and multilayer coverage. Although the multilayer species was expected to be predominantly metal(DTP), metal(DTP)2û ions were evident for multilayer (but not monolayer) coverage. For the PbS/BX system, intact Pb(BX)2 or Pb(OH)BX ions were not detected for multilayer coverage, although Pb-containing ions heavier than PbBX were. Indeed, for all the systems studied, ToF-SIMS was able to differentiate monolayer from multilayer coverage. In general, however, the SIMS evidence alone might not be sufficiently definitive to effect the differentiation. In the case of collector adsorption on copper and silver sulfides, if the multilayer species detected had been the metal monothiolate only, and had not involved the formation of some metal dithiolate, then ToF-SIMS might not have been able to provide an unequivocal differentiation of the two coverage conditions.

From December 2013 to February 2014 the Southern Middleback Ranges magnetite concentrator went through a successful optimisation process that included the installation of extra grinding power to treat a wider range of ore types. After the initial improvements, sampling surveys were conducted to identify the mineral deportment through the concentrator. Samples collected during the survey were analysed using X-ray fluorescence, quantitative X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN™ to cross-validate the analysis. Certain streams were also put through a laboratory-scale Davis Tube Recovery washing process to produce clean concentrates for analysis. The QEMSCAN™ analysis identified various metallurgical characteristics (mineral association, particle sizes, grain sizes, particle densities, etc) and these were evaluated for each separation and comminution stage to both understand the processes involved and identify opportunities for improvement. Key findings from the investigation indicated the importance of understanding the elemental deportment of target elements throughout the various minerals. The standard practice of tracking iron deportment through assay provided misleading results on losses to tail through the plant. The investigation provided insight into both wanted and unwanted minerals and the efficiency of each separation stage. The efficiencies of separation are critical due to their impact on downstream capacity, and the investigation provided insight into where opportunities exist to extract more benefit. The findings of the geometallurgical analysis have been implemented on the concentrator, and improvements in the rejection of non-magnetic minerals have been seen.CITATION:Gerber, J, Stanton, C and Olwagen, D, 2015. In this paper, we introduce the term ‘LJC’ to refer to the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator, which is an advanced technology developed by Longi Magnet, integrating various techniques such as hydro separation, magnetic flocculation, and magnetic columns. This technology combines gravity, hydro separation, and magnetic separation to achieve efficient and reliable separation processes. With its low maintenance requirements and high reliability, the LJC technology has proven to be effective in magnetite processing. The LJC technology offers two primary benefits when compared to traditional magnetic drum separators. Firstly, it can enhance the quality of the targeted or improved concentrate at a coarser product size by minimising the carryover of gangue minerals into the concentrate. Secondly, it can significantly improve the concentrate quality (eg achieving >67 per cent Fe) while maintaining similar liberation size and mass yield. In China, this technology has been widely adopted in magnetite processing, replacing traditional magnetic drum separators and fines flotation in the final stage of the process. Through collaboration with a magnetite producer in Western Australia, Longi Magnet successfully implemented the next-generation LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator to replace the original stage 3 magnetic drum separators. The application of the LJC technology resulted in an increase in product P80 from 32 μm to 43.1 μm, while maintaining a final concentrate grade of 65 per cent Fe. Additionally, the power consumption, measured in kWh per tonne of concentrate, was reduced by 10 per cent. By eliminating the bottleneck caused by the requirement of a coarser liberation size to achieve the desired concentrate grade, the plant’s throughput was increased by significantly. The LJC technology has demonstrated its ability to reduce the carbon footprint, improve concentrate grade and enhance mass recovery, offering an alternative solution for magnetite processing. The high-grade magnetite produced by the LJC technology is particularly suitable as a raw material for Directed Reduction Iron and green steel production. This paper introduces the principles of the LJC Automatic Magnetic Flotation Separator and provides details of its application in a magnetite operation in Western Australia.

The Iron Magnet deposit has been mined since 2007 when Arrium (then OneSteel) commissioned the magnetite concentrator to supply feed to the pelletising plant in Whyalla. The concentrate quality requirement for the customer required consistent product with minimal variability. In the early stages of operation, it was identified that the feed variability introduced significant changes in the concentrate quality, which was outside the acceptable customer limits.In 2011, a geometallurgical regression model was developed that allowed for the estimation of concentrate quality produced from the feed material. This was based on a laboratory-scale Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) test performed on the feed material. The objective of the project was to characterise the raw ore in the pit to allow for blending prior to crushing. By blending the feed to the concentrator, minimal concentrate quality variation within the plant was achieved. The orebody was divided into geometallurgical classes, called ore types, based on the mineral texture and magnetic mass recovery. Each geometallurgical class consisted of material with similar metallurgical performances. For each individual blast pattern, the ore was grouped into the geometallurgical classes and a composite sample was created. The composite sample was put through the laboratory-scale DTR test and the results were used to estimate the metallurgical performance of the material.The characterisation process and feed pile build methodology was applied in early 2013 and went through an optimisation and streamlining phase. Since the implementation of the geometallurgical characterisation process, the plant has seen a significant reduction in concentrate variability and measurable throughput gains. "The hazards associated with dust explosions are well known, and coal dust explosions present a significant hazard in the underground coal mining industry worldwide. In earlier work, we presented computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and test results for coal dust explosions within a 2.5 m diameter circular gallery, along with CFD simulations and test results for the suppression of these explosions with finely atomised water sprays. In this paper, we present refinements to the CFD modelling that yield a significantly improved calibration with the test results, and proceed to investigate by CFD the requirements for suppression of a coal dust explosion in a typical underground roadway. In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. The properties of the two types green balls (0.8 per cent bentonite and 2.0 per cent hydrated lime) were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 - 5.0 times/0.5 m, compressive strength of 19.7 - 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280° - 385°, respectively, under the same conditions of 1.5 per cent coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5 per cent moisture for 13 min in disc pelletiser. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8 per cent and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050°C for ten minutes and fi ring at 1300°C for 15 min. In the mean time, the hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6 - 70.6 per cent, RDI+3.15+ increased from 90.1 to 98.8 per cent and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4 - 7.4 per cent, respectively. The mineral compositions and microstructure of fi red pellets shows that the fired pellets containing 2.0 per cent possess more calcium ferrite and magnesium ferrite and compact microstructure, leading to the higher compressive strength.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. "The paper introduces the structure and work processes of outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler for coal. Twenty sets of claw tipped sampler performance tests show that: The design of inner hollow cylinder-type (?180 mm) can ensure to take a coal sample with nominal top size of 60 mm. Built-in self-cleaning piston pusher ensures no adherence and blocking of the sample. The operation practices show that the mechanical sampler can operate in order for taking coal sample with up to 16 per cent of total moisture. Claw closing design can avoid sample leaking or spilling during the claw lifting and ensure the integrity of primary increment. Ultrasonic positioning device makes the sampler capture the materials no less than 10 cm from the bottom of the wagons, basically meeting the requirement taking full depth of the sample. The precision and bias test indicates that the moisture and ash have no relative bias under the sampling process; the sampling precision is in accordance with the requirement in IS013909.At present, the spiral mechanical sampler is widely used for coal sampling but there are many limitations during application, for example: It is difficult to capture a large size sample, so the size range of a coal sample taken is limited. There is easy adhering or blocking for high moisture coal, which will result in the mixture of different increments, wear of sampler and the difficulties for cleaning and maintenance of sampler. It is difficult to capture the coal sample at lower than 30 cm from the bottom of the wagons, in order to avoid damage of the vehicle. It is possible for coal sample loss and spilling during the sampler lifting, due to the unsealed sampler.For the outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler designed for solving the above problems, the opening distance of the claw is the opening size of the sampler and makes the size range of the coal sample to be taken wide. During sampling, the two pieces of claws open and the sampler rotates vertically downward to capture an adequate coal sample after reaching the specific point. Then the two pieces of claws close tight automatically to ensure there is no coal leaking or spilling. The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

The objective of this paper is to present the potential applications of geostatistical analyses in planning CPTu investigations, as well as interpolation of CPTu data. The paper presents a case study of a geostatistical analysis of CPTu data undertaken between 2004 and 2017 for an upstreamraised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. An initial model is developed using the 2004, 2009 and 2017 CPTu data. The model is used to predict in situ cone tip resistance (qc) measurements, as the interested primary variable, at the selected locations where 2019 CPTu were undertaken, and the results of the prediction and the actual data are compared.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baizhangzi gold deposit is located in the northern North China Craton. The structural and lithological controls on the location and geometry of orebodies were studied through geologic survey, ore spatial configuration analysis and structural analysis. The orebodies of the deposit comprise auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold-bearing sulfides. The auriferous quartz-sulfide veins are dominantly hosted by the NNE- (and NE- and NW-) trending faults, which are subsidiary structures of the regional NNE-trending F2 fault. The subsidiary NNE-trending faults, having sinistral reverse kinematics, are associated with the sinistral reverse kinematics event of the F2 fault, which happened under a regional S–N-oriented compression stress field. The subsidiary NE- and NW-trending faults appear to be compressive and extensional respectively. These NE- (and NW-) trending faults are restricted to the granite intrusion and are associated with a sinistral strike-slip event of the F2 fault, which reactivated under a NW–SE-oriented compression stress field. It makes significant influence on geological evolution and distribution of different ore types that the strike of the F2 fault presents significant transition from NNE- to NE-trending in vertical. The ore-bearing disseminated host rocks, with widespread silicification and pyritisation, distribute in the lower inner contact zone of the granite intrusion, especially in the lower wavelike boundary of granite intrusion.CITATION:Xiong, L, Wei, J H and Shi, W J, 2015. In primary copper smelters, the received copper concentrate and other materials contain a certain amount of moisture, ranging from six to 14 per cent. Moisture in wet concentrate has a negative effect on the performance of the smelting furnaces when it is fed directly to the furnaces, namely increasing the energy consumption and the off-gas flow. There are several drying technologies available for drying copper concentrate, varying from direct heated rotary dryers and flash dryers to indirect heated steam dryers. Application of steam dryers has changed the drying process for copper smelters. Produced from a waste heat boiler, steam as heating medium enables plant-wide heat utilisation. Fossil fuel used from outside sources to remove water is no longer required and the combustion chamber is not required. In addition special attention has been paid to overcome the known problems of pollution emissions, excessive wear, clogging and frequent maintenance. The Kumera steam dryer is featured with many advantages based on principal improvements in reducing tube element wear and increasing drying efficiency. Thus, it has been considered as the first choice for those smelters where steam is available.

TSL Concepts and Practical Examples of the Non-Reactive System - Meyco TSL 865 Thin Spray-on Liners (TSLs) have been intensively investigated by mining and chemical industries within the last decade. Apart from the basic concept of spraying thin liners, expectations of the product's performance vary, eg immediate active strata support is seen as a key to control the ground permanently. For many coal mines this is an important factor to reduce maintenance in their roadways and enable permanent production from the long wall. In opposition to a passive mesh system this technology offers immediate active support to the strata. But not only coal mines are interested in TSL technology, there are potential applications in hard rock mines, during shaft sinking, pillar support and as an anti-weathering sealant. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of TSL concepts; it will give examples of successfully applied TSLs with a main focus on the non-reactive and flexible system MEYCO TSL 865 by BASF. Furthermore, it will indicate the limitations and discuss briefly the bearing capacity and reasonable lab testing of such systems.

A pressurisation method with multiparallel fans has been adopted at HongLiuLin Coalmine to control the significant external air leakage through the goaf area of coalface 15207. Potential damaging effects of large external air leakage on a coalmine’s ventilation system are analysed according to the current air leakage status caused by the exploitation of shallow-covered coal seams. The use of pressure balanced ventilation to prevent external air leakage through goaf areas is introduced. The calculation of ventilation network of HongLiuLin Coalmine shows that the air resistance of an external air leakage branch through a goaf area and the air pressure drops from the intake slope to the working face can be adopted to determine the values of pressure to be increased by regulating fans and airflow controlling parameters of regulators. By investigating airflow requirements of the pressure-balanced area as well as the performances of the auxiliary fans currently used in the coalmine, the number of pressurisation fans needed is fixed. The expected result is achieved after the pressurisation method has been carried out, which can be helpful for other coalmines to handle similar problems.CITATION:Wu, F, Chen, W and Wang, H, 2015. Stuck drill rods (often referred to as bogged rods) in production ‘upholes’ are a common problem in the underground mining industry. Bogged and broken off drill rods have the potential to fall out of the hole without warning, posing a serious hazard to personnel and equipment below.Current industry practice to alleviate this hazard can be to either grout the hole in order to lock the drill rods in place, or to ‘plate over’ the hole with a rock bolt. Each of these operations seriously delays mine production as both require demobilisation of the production drill and mobilisation of alternative personnel and equipment to address the hazard. Both methods have been assessed for safety and efficiency and were found to be expensive, time consuming and in the case of plating over, ineffective.To address the safety and efficiency short-comings of the traditional practices, the long hole plug (LHP) has been developed to safely secure the lost rods in the hole. The LHP when struck by falling drill rods behaves similar to an expansion shell anchor transferring the axial forces from the falling drill rods horizontally into the rock mass. It is installed using standard production drills allowing work to safely continue with little interruption.Extensive testing has been carried out on the LHP in the laboratory and underground at the Rosebery mine on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Testing has included static pull testing, full scale drop testing and underground trials.The outcome of this work has proven the LHPs ability to add safety, volume and cost benefits to the Rosebery underground operation and it is currently in use at that site. The introduction of digital communications technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled high bandwidth applications to be applied in the mining industry. Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards have allowed numerous applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One of the many important applications is the tracking of personnel and equipment via RFID Tags. This tracking application has formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System or Collision Avoidance System (Schiffbauer and Mowrey, 2001; Kent, Fischer and Schiffbauer, 2011) thereby improving safety and increasing control in the mining environment. This paper discusses the growth of digital technology as the backbone for communications in underground mining applications. This growth has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ (occurring in the general business world) to be available to mine operators in general and underground mine operators in particular. Mine Site Technologies’ involvement with major mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in developing and supplying their communication systems is also discussed.The latest technical requirements and specifications for communication systems for underground and open cut mines will be reviewed.

Increasing growth in the minerals industry over the past decade has raised the question of whether the standard of training for new geologists has been negatively impacted. This hypothesis was tested by means of a survey. Factors considered included the quality of training and whether it has changed over the past 50 years, preferred styles of training compared to styles of training received and whether the quality of training provided by a company changed with the type or size of company. Data from 435 survey respondents showed a consistent standard of training, but a significant increase in the level of responsibility allocated to new geologists. Those with increased responsibility also had reduced access to additional support and were often asked to perform tasks for which they had little or no training. New geologists were more likely to receive better quality training in a large company (over 100 employees) that owned the mine or exploration lease. A more structured training program was more likely to provide a higher quality result than those with minimal or no structure.

Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.
