The Upper Robe (Robe Gorge) deposits occur in Kumina Creek and the Robe River, some 20-40 km upstream from mining operations at Pannawonica. The Gorge Deposits were rec- ognised, mapped and sampled in 1962-3 and re- examined in detail in 1971. Approximately 180 mineralized occurrences were mapped in 1971 on 1:4800 scale and 50 of these were remapped in detail at 1:1200 scale. Eighty cross sections were measured and sampled and 300 geological maps prepared. In addition 88 holes totalling 7388 feet were drilled in three occurrences considered to have the greatest potential. The Gorge Deposits occur in the Robe Pisolite unit which forms thin remnant crusts, bay fillings and occasional cut-off meanders along the edge of the present streams. Less than 50 of the deposits have tonnage potential of one million or more. Consequently exploit- ation of the Gorge reserves must be considered as a very uncertain, long range possibility because the deposits are small and scattered throughout the gorges in the area, thereby necessitating costly railroad spur lines to gain mining access. The geologic settings, geochemistry of host rocks, mineralogy and metal values in modern back-arc volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralisation are very similar to those in many ancient polymetallic VHMS deposits. The geology, distribution and styles of seafloor mineralisation in modem back-arc basins, especially the eastern Manus and Lau Basins, southwest Pacific, are compared to VHMS deposits in the Mount Read and Mount Windsor districts of Australia . Based on exploration and research in modem back-arc settings, geologists are now observing the direct analogues of the polymetallic VHMS deposits currently being exploited in ancient back-arc volcanic belts throughout Australia and the world.

Iron ore samples selected from the Deepdale, Iron Prince and Mt. Newman ore bodies have been pelletised on a pilot scale plant and subsequently reduced under laboratory conditions by hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Pellets approximately 1 cm in diameter have been reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 5000- 900¦C and the results examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95% reduction the rate of reduction could be described by a transport con- trolled porous model, in which the effective diffusivities of hydrogen in theòpr¦duct layer and the reaction zone are filar. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. ve 95% reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation_of retained wustite or fayalite. Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 7500 - 900¦C showed that the rate eduction by carbon monoxide was approximately five times slower than the rate by hydrogen. The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the properties of the pellets, which may account for the ely conflicting results that have been obtained in previous investigation on porous pellets.

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

This paper analyses problems associated with cement based technique in metal mines, and provides a new mining technique of packing the tailing sand and water into solidified material. In the new technique, the cementing agent is a solidifying material containing a high percentage of water and tailing sand. The sand and water solidify into the packed body at the same time. The slurry of the packed body varies widely in concentration and suitability for different mining conditions. It consists of two liquid materials, each composed of a cementing agent, tailing sand and water. The thick liquids are transported to the packing place at the same time. Their pumping property is good; they do not solidify or block up the pipe during transportation. At the packing place, the two liquids are evenly mixed.The mixed liquid flattens out well and its solidifying speed is so fast that it solidifies into a packed body within a very short period of time. The compressed strength of the packed body can reach 1.2-5MPa in one day, which satisfies the requirements of different mining conditions. By using the new mining technique, all the tailing sand can be used again in the packed body and it is low in cost and investment. Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of the Australas- ian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the i eew South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Depart- ment of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been Beneficial.

Management of environmental issues is an integral part of the mine decommissioning process. In Queensland, miners must comply with environmental aspects of the Mineral Resources Act and Contaminated Land legislation. Successful decommissioning involves the integration of a final Plan of Operations, decommissioning report addressing the mineÆs commitments included in its Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS), and Site Contamination Report for relinquishment of leases under the Contaminated Land Act (1991). Niugini MiningÆs Red Dome Mine is proceeding through the decommissioning process. This paper discusses the important environmental management issues including sampling programs, management of culturally significant areas, assessment of background concentrations of target analytes, the use of historical reviews and risk assessment techniques, the timing of works, and the remediation/management of large areas of impacted land. The importance of a clear communications plan between key stakeholders is also discussed.

The volcanic successions that host massive sulphide deposits are diverse in composition, facies types and facies relationships. They also show a variety of spatial and temporal relationships to mineralisation. In many examples, such as the Koongie Park Formation in Western Australia, the host succession includes more or less conformable syn-volcanic sills with peperitic contacts. Such sills can be an important source of heat for fluid circulation, influencing patterns of hydrothermal alteration and the location of co-eval and later mineralisation. The impact of syn-volcanic sills on the host succession depends in part on the initial porosity and permeability of the enclosing facies. The special properties of glassy pumice û being highly porous, permeable, and reactive û allow pumice-rich facies to preferentially focus hydrothermal fluid flow. However, the same properties promote early alteration and porosity reduction. Hence, the diagenetic and compaction history of pumiceous facies strongly influences their potential to host massive sulphide mineralisation. In contrast to pumice, dense glass has relatively low porosity, at least initially, and does not compact. Non-vesicular glass is a major component of submarine lavas, syn-volcanic intrusions and some volcaniclastic facies. However, especially in submarine settings, dense glass is commonly intensely perlitically fractured soon after eruption. The fractures greatly increase the porosity and permeability, locally accelerating diagenetic and hydrothermal alteration. In addition to false pyroclastic textures, altered perlite may exhibit false porphyritic textures. Silica- or feldspar-altered perlite kernels surrounded by intensely altered phyllosilicate domains can resemble phenocrysts in a fine grained groundmass.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. This paper will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the years 1998 to 2002 faced by the operation and personnel at Thalanga, and its continued survival through short life projects (three feasibilities in four years). It will describe the processing of the different ores, issues faced and operating and technical innovations that occurred during that period. This will include: commissioning on very high grade Cu ores, treatment of high Sulfur feed ores (~46 per cent S) and the effects of the installation of a Detritor Mill on the process.

There are many underground mines with shaft or decline access with limited production capacity or where the mine may become uneconomical as trucking costs escalate with increasing depth of the decline. In such cases a need may exist for a shaft hoisting system which can be constructed more quickly and more economically than a shaft sunk by conventional methods. Relatively cheap small diameter shafts can be constructed by raise boring. This paper describes a simple hoisting system which has been designed to take advantage of the benefits of raise boring. The system uses twin bored raises with a double drum winder hoisting a skip in each hole. The design concept is based on 1. accepting that the raises cannot be truly straight or vertical, 2. using the raise to guide the conveyance, and 3. minimising operating, maintenance, and capital costs. The hoisting system requires a certain degree of accuracy in the alignment of the twin raises. A survey of raise boring practice showed that the required accuracy could probably be achieved with conventional techniques. However it was thought it would be necessary to survey the pilot hole during drilling and to be able to correct the hole if deviation became

Since the of Bergstrand's Geo-dimeter in 1946, and Wadley's Tellurometer in 1956, there have been numerous Electromagnetic Distance Measurement (EDM) instruments produced throughout the world by a variety of companies.This form of measurement has not merely replaced other methods of measurement, but has caused considerable change of emphasis in survey techniques. Major control surveys are now being accomplished using trilateration instead of triangulation. The surveying of open cuts or engineering work may be done in a fraction of the time and, in the majority of cases, to a greater degree of accuracy than with older methods.It is surprising that with this new tech-nology and development of EDM equipment which is compact, easy to use and no longer so expen-sive, no advance has been made in underground surveying. If we look at equipment being used by the majority of mining companies, we see that there have been very few changes since the Second World War. Very little research has been carried out to enable the surveyor to do his work more easily in conditions which, at the very least. are hazardous.

"The benefits of measuring blast movement to reduce ore loss and dilution have been recognised by many people for many years and various methods have been used with limited success. Geita Gold Mine is running the pilot study on the blast movement monitoring (BMM) system which is a revolutionary method developed and patented by the University of Queensland and Blast Movement Technology (BMT). The system consists of directional transmitters placed within the shot prior to blasting, which are then located after the blast with a special detector and then the data is processed with purpose-designed software.As part of continuous improvement on grade control, Geita Gold Mine is running a research project in all operating pits with the objective of: quantifying the three-dimensional blast muck pile movement and finally utilise the movement data to define post-blast ore polygons and incorporate the movement dynamics during block modelling,quantify the potential savings for ore loss and dilution,improve mine geologists knowledge of blast dynamics, andstimulate greater co-operation between drill and blast engineers and geologists to achieve optimum blast designs.To any operation with selective mining, it is critical to the economics of an operation to control ore loss and dilution; getting it wrong will result in significant lost revenue. The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthermometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10-15 pm in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170-220¦C in early 2A veins, 165-322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190-256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8-11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt. Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 ¦m are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160-268¦C and salinities of 5-8 NaCl equiv. wt %. The Shamrock Gold Mine has been brought from exploration to production within three years. Mining of the openpit is scheduled for June 1990 with commissioning in April of the 180 000 TPA carbon-in-pulp mill on old tailings and rock dumps. The development of a small openpit containing 344 000 tonnes at 3.6 g/t Au in a complex sulphide ore has required extensive metallurgical testwork to optimise recovery, and ensure profitability. The project has been undertaken in a changing economic climate, with increasing restrictive legislation. The decision to mine was further complicated by the escalating cost of installing a heap leach operation in South East Queensland. Decreasing costs of consumables, in particular sodium cyanide, and the opportunity to purchase a suitable transportable mill at a reasonable price made the project robustly viable as a CIP operation.

The dielectric properties of practically all oxide and sulphide ore minerals are such that they heat rapidly when irradiated with microwaves particularly at the standard frequency of 2450 MHz. The presence of carbon or low rank coal mixed with the minerals still further enhances the heating rate. Amongst the patented technologies being investigated are: (i) the direct reduction of oxides with or without carbon included in the pellets or briquettes; (ii) microwave precursor heating of composites ahead of smelt reduction; (iii) microwave smelting of ore or concentrate mixtures with carbon, sometimes assisted with oxygen. Microwaves appear to stimulate endothermic reduction reactions as readily as they do exothermic oxidation reactions. Being a method of achieving "bulk" heating, composites or columns of ore-char blends rapidly heat throughout rather than from the outside inwards as in conventional heating. The microwaves of themselves do not generate any gas - the only gases to be cleaned are the products of reaction in the composites or blends, plus the products of oxygen smelting. In the case of sulphide composites, depending on the quantity and type of low rank coal or char present, sulphur may be eliminated, and collected, in the elemental form. Furthermore, reactions seem to take place at lower temperatures than in conventional smelting but no doubt at the "points" where actual reactions are taking place the atomic or molecular vibrations are such as to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics. Examples are given of the production of unusual products of smelting sulphide concentrates and also the alloys produced from refractory minerals such as chromite and ilmenite. The techniques have been used to produce products with as wide a range of melting points as relatively pure tin and tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Special equipment is being designed and evaluated for these new fields of pyrometallurgy.

Some samples from arc-type volcanic suites collected in northern New Zealand and southeastern Papua New Guinea show rare earth element (REE) and Y abundances which are enriched relative to the those typical of their respective associations. This enrichment appears to be the result of an alteration process which selectively mobilises the REE and re-precipitates them as REE-bearing minerals in veins and interstitial patches. The alteration is on a micron scale and is not detected in routine petrographic examination. The spectre of REE mobility in young apparently fresh rocks is important to igneous geochemists who use REE abundances to constrain petrogenetic models and may also be important because it indicates the operation of a natural REE enrichment process which could operate in the formation of economic REE deposits.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited commenced construction in mid-1981 of facilities and infrastructure to mine and process gold ore at Mt Fubilan in Papua ew Guinea. Production ofgold began more or less on schedule in mid-1984 although design capacity is yet to be achieved. Due to geotechnical problems, two important items of infrastructure, hydropower and permanent tailings disposal, are not yet in place. Current low metal prices make it likely that copper facilities will be postponed.The deposit compriscs a leached gold capping overlying copper sulphide porphyry mineralisation containing significant gold and molybdenum. Mining is by open pit methods. The soft leached capping gold ore is ripped and dozed, loaded by hydraulic shovel and trucked to a dump pocket. After passing a large semi-autogenous mill of nominal capacity of I, I00 tonnes per hour, the ore is treated by the carbon-inpulp process, with a gravity circuit to recover coarse gold. The final product is 12 kg dore bullion bars.At present, all tailings are detoxified with hydrogen peroxide; after cycloning, the coarse fraction is stored, and the slime fraction discharged into the river system; expected environmental impact is acceptable. Investigations for a suitable dam site for a permanent tailings system are still underway.Peak 'I. hour power demand for Stage I is 17 MW, presently supplied by a diesel alternator power station and a 2 MW mini hydropower plant.Initial access to the base camp at Tabubil was only by air. Eventually a road was pushed through 134 km from the river port at Kiunga (where port facilities have been constructed) and a further 23 km to Mt Fubilan.Roads are constructed of compacted gravel and crushed limestone generally underlain by geofabric. Eight major steel bridges were built.The town of Tabubil has been established, including housing, airport, shops, offices, schools and all facilities.Environmental studies have been extensive and a detailed monitoring program is maintained. Ok Tedi Mining Limited is making considerable efforts to train Papua New Guineans and to foster local business.
