Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. A brief report on the performance during the 12 month period from 1st July, 1954, to 30th June, 1955, is then given.SELECTION AND DESIGN OF FANGeneral ConsiderationsBecause of the economic advantages of joint ventilation of the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, it was decided, after a full review of the future ventilating requirements of both mines, to sink a 20 ft. diameter circular upcast airway on the common boundary of the two properties, to handle a maximum quantity of 900,000 c.f.m.The anticipated air requirements were at this stage estimated to be:(a) initially 700,000 c.f.m. through a mine equivalent orifice of 160 to 2'40 sq. ft. Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

To secure a sustainable competitive advantage some smelters may need strategies based on flexibility in feed and product ranges depending on immediate future projections of profitability. This paper explores the technical requirements for strategic diversity in smelting, leaving procurement, marketing and contractual considerations aside. The days when a smelting operation is tied specifically to say only processing zinc concentrates are perhaps drawing to a close. While internationally traded mineral concentrates are available, attractive business opportunities must exist for fully diversified custom smelters. Certain new and emerging technologies have inherent characteristics that are evaluated in this context. The paper identifies the basic building blocks that will permit such a scenario and assesses the technical feasibility. The ability to respond flexibly to environmental pressures is highlighted as being of paramount importance.

The economic climate of the Canadian mining industry forced an increased interest in rapid, continuous excavation techniques for hard rock formations. The potential applications and advantages of continuous mining over the present drill- blast-muck labour intensive cyclical methods are considerable. Noranda investigated an electrical technique, Plasma Blasting showing considerable promise for mining hard rock. The background of the technology and the theory of blasting rock with electricity is described. The Plasma Blasting process is based on the fast discharge of stored electrical energy into a small amount of electrolyte, suitably located in the rock. The electrical energy converts the electrolyte into high pressure plasma, which expands very quickly, thereby, generating a shock wave. This shock wave produces a stress field inside the rock, resulting in a blast similar to that made by chemical explosives, but without the deleterious fumes. Noranda is currently blasting boulders of 4-5 tonnes and is at present constructing a mobile, autonomous secondary rock breaker for underground and open pit applications. Tests on in situ hard rock formations will lead to the development of a continuous mining machine. Production rates of 500 tonnes per man-shift could be obtained with such a machine.

The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens. There is a Chinese saying-may you live in interesting times. Certainly we do tod.a~our mining professions. We are, of course, totally dependent on a' healthy mining industry for the chance to practice our chosen professions, and for our Institute.Let us look at one of the more interesting facts. The mining industry now accounts for some 50 per cent of Australia's exports.This massive earning of foreign exchange is the key to keeping our increasing overseas debt in check. Furthermore, mineral production..including petroleum, saves us a large amount of foreign currency by providing essential minerals, including energy minerals, for local consumption.With such fundamental inputs to our economy, any primary school student, any child in fact, should be able to see that the mining industry and mining professions are very important to our nation. Yet the average citizen is unaware of this simple fact as they enjoy their high standard'of living and think that we are still living in the lucky country.Therefore, it is most interesting to me that the average citizen, and most of our politicians, seem to hold mining and miners in low esteem. I use the term miners to describe all those important people, like us, who work in the mining professions, and are employed by, or are dependent on, the mining industry.So why are we miners in this paradoxical situation of doing wonderful works, being the backbone of the country, and yet being held in low regard by the very community we underwrite.Truly-it is interesting-or did the Chinese mean intriguing?It is indeed paradoxical that we are the rare people who open up the land, borrow small parts of it for a relatively short time to harvest the mineral crops, then return it to the community for other uses; and when we return the land back to the community at large it should be in better shape than when we started. There will be infrastructure - roads, airstrips, supplies of water and power, parks and housing-all left behind after mining.These benefits to the community are ignored while our critics focus on the small scars on the landscape which sometimes cannot be healed at reasonable cost; and yet, if we allow time, nature usually heals the small scars anyway. Look at New Zealand, particularly the Coromandel Peninsula which was intensively mined and logged; now it is covered with secondary growth and stark pine plantations. Remember that mining scars are infinitesimally small when compared to urban sprawl or clearing of land for farming and grazing, or highways, or the area of most national parks.Thus, miners are important citizens economically, and we are the majority of the few who actually practice the principles of multiple land use.What are the consequences of our image? They are serious in that the poor image we seem to project, discourages many people from becoming involved in, or supportive of, our industry. This brings me to my theme for the year: Students, Education and Communication - the Key to our Future.

A number of suggestions have been made to improve the design of cells used for electro winning and electro refining of metals. Most of these designs have been aimed at increasing the current density used in order to improve cell capacity, although the purpose of some has been to produce electro deposited metals in a continuous manner. Improvements in the electrolyte flow pattern in conventional cells have resulted in an increase in the rate of mass transport of metal ions to the electrode surface; giving rise to lower concentrat- ion polarization and an improvement in the nature of the product obtained, Other cell designs are based on a moving electrode, usually a rotating disk, and these may include provision for removal of the product in a continuous manner, The maximum current density which can be used in an electro- lytic deposition process is determined by the limiting diffusion current, the physical nature of the, product, the purity of the product required and by the increase in power costs which result from the higher cell voltages, This paper examines the properties of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode system when used for a metal deposition Process,

The Mount Leyshon breccia complex is located on an east-west trending contact between Cambrian metasediments (Puddler Creek Formation) and the Ordovician Mt. Leyshon granite, within the Lolworth-Ravenswood block. Detailed mapping of basement, breccia and igneous unit geometries, crosscutting relationships and resolution of complex chronological relation- ships indicates that the Mt. Leyshon breccia complex should be reinterpreted as a number of intrusive igneous and breccia phases. This is in contrast to a previously published account of a largely extrusive geological setting. A complex structural history dominated by strike-slip faulting is preserved within the basement units and is responsible for controlling the location and geometry of the breccia complex. The breccia complex has been divided into brecciated "basement", "main pipe breccia" and an "interactive magma/breccia sequence". Main pipe breccia (the most voluminous unit within the complex) has been re-interpreted as an intrusive breccia, rather than an extrusive or vent fill as previously proposed. This is based on the following evidence: 1. the facies characteristics of the main pipe breccia, 2. the presence of a progression from cohesive basement through to mixed breccia, 3. minor basement block rotation during breccia complex formation, and 4. the partial structural control on the main pipe breccia. No unambiguous evidence exists for pyroclastic facies, although the fine breccia variant commonly contains "accretionary structures", very similar in appearance to those formed during pyroclastic processes. In view of 1. above, they are interpreted to be the product of particle accretion during upward movement of fragmental material, although an origin due to altera- tion cannot be completely discounted. heir occurrence in the main pipe breccia indicates that their presence within a rock unit is not necessarily diagnostic of nvroclastic nroeesses.

ABS'TRACT For a number of years research efforts have been directed towards improving the efficiency of sampling and analysing coal mine roadway dusts. In the past decade the practicality of rapid, on site analysis of the incombustible content of these dusts using a radioactive technique has been receiving close attention both in Australia and overseas. Accurate measurement of the total incombustibles present is only possible by time consuming chemical methods. As the densities of the solid incombustible materials are greater than that of coal, they absorb a higher proportion of incident low energy gamma radiation than does coal. The amount of such radiation "back scattered" from mine dust samples is therefore inversely related to their average densities, and hence to their incombustible contents. This phenomenon can be used as a measure of incombustible content by employing an appropriately designed and calibrated instrument.

This paper describes a case history of using an integrated geochemical and hydrogeological approach to predicting solute transport from gold mine tailings in highly fractured volcanic terrain. Two modes of transport are identified, namely discrete fissure flow and diffuse seepage through the intervening weathered rock. A simple mass balance approach is used to predict concentrations at points of emergence because most of the seepage migration will be by way of the discrete fissures where advective transport will predominate. The mass balance method has been modified to allow for natural degradation of weak acid dissociable cyanide. The long term effects of diffuse seepage are also examined.

Oaky Creek Coal (OCC) has embarked on an ambitious program to fast track the introduction of Trench Mining into its current mining operations. The project has the capacity to allow the extraction of reserves at stripping ratios, uneconomical by conventional mining methods.Trench mining using Continuous Highwall Mining (CHM) technology reduces the in-situ stripping ratio to 4:3; compared with a stripping ratio of 20:1 using conventional mining techniques.

The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Notnnea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanims of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend from early inafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calc- alkaline. There is no evidence of 'mixing, of, the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to sprcadime in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier Mesozoic subduction zone.

The mathematical modelling of rock fragmentation by blasting is one of the most difficult and challenging problems of applied mathematics. Not only is complex mathematics required but there is incomplete understanding of the basic physics and chemistry involved. The possibility of getting the physical basis of a model correct by simple mathematical and experimental procedures is demonstrated for the novel process of fragmenting rock by high-pressure arc discharges. While the importance of obtaining the correct physical basis for a model is emphasised, high-pressure arc induced fragmentation of rock is shown to be a powerful laboratory tool for the study of blasting.

A review of the current pit design procedures and their performance has been undertaken recently by Mining Research Associates (MRA) and the CSIRO Division of Geomechanics. Visits were made to mines covering a wide range of operations. A questionnaire was completed by each mine in order to collate the relevant information. Interviews were also made with representatives of the Mines Departments to ascertain their role in regulating mine designs. Design expectations were compared with field performance, and reasons for variations noted. Problems associated with designs were identified and suggested methods of alleviating the problems have been made.

The Ok Tedi open pit mine will have final wall heights in excess of 750m. The behaviour of these excavated slopes will be influenced by the presence of numerous defects. This paper discusses the identification of possible failure mechanisms within the pit walls based on mapped fault and joint data. Results from analyses using these data have formed the basis for the ultimate pit design.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23,000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scop- for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.
