Drill monitors for rotary blasthole drills have been available to the mining industry since the 1970s. The early monitors were pen strip chart recorders that were developed for the oil drilling industry and adapted to mining. They recorded drilling parameters such as depth, pull-down pressure, torque, RPM, and hailing air pressure. While these recorders could generate a large volume of paper, the amount of useful data was minimal. The data was not summarised and required an engineer to interpret the chart traces. Being a mechanical recorder, the devices were also susceptible to frequent failures. Modem electronics, and the development of the personal computer and its associated software have radically changed the type of instrumentation that is now available for blasthole drills. Perhaps more important is what can be done with the data. The PC allows the logged data to be analysed, summarised, and a variety of reports to be generated. The reports can be customised to meet the specific requirements of the mine and reduce the amount of time that is required to interpret the data. There is also an increased awareness in the mining industry of the importance of production drills. Blasthole drills have typically been the piece of production equipment that received the least amount of attention in a surface mine. Management focussed on the trucks and shovels or draglines. This situation is changing, and therefore the benefits that can be derived from monitoring drill performance are being recognised. Potential economic benefits of installing drill monitors have been documented in previous papers (Peck and Vynne, 1992). Mines are finding that pay-back periods of less than twelve months and rates of return in excess of 30 per cent are not uncommon. These benefits include the following: 1. Reduced overdrilling; 2. Increased rate of penetration; 3. Helping to locate coal seams; 4. Identification of weak and strong zones; 5. Reduce geophysical logging; 6. Optimising blasts; 7. Improved fragmentation and diggability; 8. Decreased coal dilution; 9. Increased bit life; 10. Reduced maintenance costs; 1 I . Improved accuracy of data and reports.

An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

Prediction of the downstream processing performance of iron ore needs detailed information on mineral composition, textural peculiarities, particle density, porosity, mineral liberation and association and mineral grain size. Optical image analysis and automated iron ore texture classification systems are a way of obtaining such information. Furthermore, this information can be used for predicting the output of specific processes and their combinations. Several examples of the application of such an approach to process performance studies for iron ore are discussed. These include the application of classification by ore texture to modelling and optimisation of hydrocyclone performance, the effect of including textural information in modelling of sinter properties, and combining textural information with an experimental study of stirring and ultrasonic treatment of haematitic-goethitic iron ore fines to understand the deportment of fines and the breakdown/deagglomeration of particles. In all cases, the availability of textural information is important and helps provide a better prediction of process performance and/or understanding of the unit process.

Gold mining companies who are signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (visit www.cyanidecode.org for further information) are required to measure WAD cyanide on-line and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of specified limits. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5 such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Recognising and in response to the gold mining industryÆs need for an on-line WAD cyanide measurement device, Mintek recently developed the WAD Cynoprobe. The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide from metal-cyano complexes. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand <-> Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The instrument proved to be accurate and reliable in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. It has gained wide-spread commercial acceptance both locally and internationally. However, itÆs recent exposure to complex ore types have called for refinements to the analysis technique. It has been further developed to improve its precision and accuracy and to remove reagent and thiosulfate interferences. Its compatibility with the most commonly used destruction oxidants has also recently been investigated. The WAD Cynoprobe may be configured to measure both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately 5 min, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. Proper oxidant dosage control and monitoring of effluent concentration levels will ultimately result in less cyanide and post-destruction salts discharged into the environment.

Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Several new sensors and portable instru- ments for methane monitoring and early fire detection have been developed and tested in mining conditions.

Mining companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of reducing operating costs while maximising throughput and profitability. At the same time, the grade and quality of treated ores are becoming poorer and more variable, resulting in suboptimal process performance.It is now widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In particular, progress in plant automation and control systems has seen a trend towards unified frameworks for control and optimisation of mineral processing plants. These frameworks seek to seamlessly integrate different roles and tasks involved in process operations - IT, automation, plant maintenance and operations. An integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximising plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis ægapÆ evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.Resolving these problems can potentially avoid unplanned downtimes, process instabilities and other operational surprises, thus ensuring optimal plant throughput and optimal process behaviour for improved recoveries. Integrating control systems and plant automation with advanced analytics to analyse and optimise processes enables operations to achieve reductions in the variability of key process parameters. In addition, early detection of equipment malfunction or suboptimal process conditions leads to improved equipment availability and reliability. Ultimately, these operational gains reflect in profitability because of plant throughput and recovery gains. Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

"Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

The use of rock bolts as permanent support has been prohibited by client specifications in several recent large tunnel projects in Australia. The justification for this appears to lie in concerns with proper and verifiable installation procedures rather than concerns with the intrinsic durability of the corrosion protection systems. However, in civil tunnels, preventing the use of permanent rock bolts for long-term support results in the use of cast in place concrete lining which in some instances would otherwise be unnecessary.

Controls on environmental loading from acid rock drainage (ARD) are not well understood in waste rock material. In particular, relationships between subsurface flow and the timing, duration, and intensity of leaching of metals and acidity from waste rock dumps remain ill defined. This study investigates field-scale relationships between subsurface flow processes and geochemical processes in unsaturated waste rock. A 12-metre tall, unsaturated waste rock pile, constructed in 1994, was deconstructed and sampled at Key Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, during the summer of 2000. A detailed sampling methodology was developed to characterise physical and chemical properties of waste rock material within the waste rock pile. Physical properties were characterised by measuring soil-water suction, volumetric water content, and grain-size distribution at 60 random locations within the pile and grain-size distribution at 20 grid locations within the pile. Attempts to develop a field-based soil water characteristic curve from physical field-data failed due to spatial variability and hysteresis of waste rock properties. As a result, grain-size distribution was used as a relative measure of subsurface flow. Paste pH, pore-water geochemistry, mineralogy, and water-soluble extraction results were used to characterise geochemical processes and sulfide oxidation at each of the 20 grid locations. Geochemical characterisation results demonstrated the preferential weathering of marcasite relative to pyrite and chalcopyrite. Dolomite was the main buffering carbonate mineral. Gyspum, jarosite and iron oxyhydroxides were the main secondary minerals. Pore-waters contained up to 800, 11.7, and 6 mMolar (78 000, 690, 1400 mg/L, respectively) of sulfate, nickel, and uranium, respectively, suggesting significant weathering has occurred. Measures of weathering indicators show no discernable correlation with grain-size distribution nor do they show any spatial relationship within the sampled grid. Reasons for this may include limited duration of waste rock exposure to weathering and development of fluid flow-paths, and limitations of characterisation methods used. Indeed, six years may not be long enough for weathering patterns to develop due to fluid flow-paths in this unsaturated waste rock pile.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

Over the last ten years geological and mining software products have evolved greatly. Software companies developing such products have focussed almost exclusively on the development of technical aspects of the applications, addressing geological, ore reserve estimation and mine planning problems. These specialist applications, and the many other new technologies that are being developed by a myriad of niche developers, are an essential part of todayÆs hi-tech mining operations. Technology is also being used in many other areas to improve the mining process and there is no doubt that tremendous advances are being made in all these fields. Yet there is something missing. The manner in which the technologies are used and implemented has led to the creation of many independent and inefficient æislands of technologyÆ where a variety of products from different vendors are used to address different, but related problems. Problems occur with unreliable information, data duplication, data redundancy and transferring data between applications that may be incompatible or even run on different computer platforms. These problems impede the flow and availability of information and hamper day-to-day decision-making by mine management. A solution to this problem is to take a holistic view of all the various technical applications and incorporate them into a single information technology solution. This solution must encompass all of the information requirements of a mining operation and must provide facilities that address much of the modern thinking about mine management, including strategic mine planning, value management, key performance indicators, and maintenance of a mineral balance sheet. Gemcom is developing an Integrated Resource Asset Management System (IRAMS), which is an enterprise-wide integrated computer system that encompasses various applications typically found at a mining operation. The core component of the system is a common, open, industry standard database that can be shared by many users from each of the different departments at a mine. Around that central repository are the primary applications that provide the mine with information it needs to operate. Ensuring that the information is reliable, accurate, shareable, timely and consistent will eliminate many inefficiencies, and provide significant benefits to mining companies. In turn these benefits will lead to significant improvements in decision-making, productivity and profitability for the operation. The initial version of the IRAMS system is currently being implemented at the De Beers Venetia Mine in South Africa. The system is being built around a core repository using the Microsoft æBack OfficeÆ architecture, and incorporates key technical applications from Gemcom, Whittle, De Beers Technical Team, Wenco and JKTech. The benefits of enterprise-wide systems have long been recognised in the commercial arena and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP, JD Edwards and MIMS are becoming commonplace in the mining industry. The more forward looking software developers and mining companies realise the need for efficient management of the information gathered during the mining process and can see that the concepts used in ERP systems apply equally to the technical applications as they did to commercial applications. The use of IT in the mining industry has expanded tremendously over the last five years as enabling technology and management acceptance has become more prevalent, and there is considerable room for dramatic growth over the next five years. The evolution of geological and mining software has now reached the stage where mines will yield the greatest returns by integrating the applications used in each area of their operations.

The laboratory investigations which are necessary to evaluate the mineral processing effectiveness usually include density separation of narrow size fraction of the feed and one of the products. In each size - density fractions the content of valuable mineral has to be determined. These data and yield in each size - density fraction can be specified by a matrix of partition coefficients. They are counterparts of recoveries. These coefficients can be compared with the mean recoveries at each density or size fraction or the total recovery, to determine which density - size fractions are processed in the best or worst way. The basic categories are: vector of metal content l _i 1711, 7t2, òòò, ltM I ò vector of particle size distribution x = I d1, d2, ..., dN I ò matrix of partition coefficients P11, P12, Pi N P _ P21, P22, ..., P2 N PM1 PM2..., PMN These three conceptions allow one to determine all the basic metallurgical parameters of a mineral processing unit. Losses of valuable mineral are connected with: ò mineralogical composition of the ore (types of minerals, their properties, dissemination, crystallochemical affinity, type and properties of gangue minerals), ò applied technology and technical equipment (beneficiation as a stochastic process, processing methods, process control, intergrowth liberation, water quality). Examples of application of the analytical method proposed are given for zinc - lead and coal processing plants.

The Port of Port Hedland is the largest bulk export terminal in the world and is one of Australia’s most important pieces of economic infrastructure. BHP is the largest Port user to support the export of iron ore products from mines located within the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA). BHP’s priority is the safety and well-being of its workforce and the communities where it operates. In a recent regulatory application to increase export capacity, BHP committed to the deployment of wind fences to reduce wind erosion from stockpiled ore. Wind erosion from stockpiles was identified through inverse modelling as the most significant dust source compared to other sources such as stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders and transfer stations. The primary cause of dust emissions from stockpiles is dust lift-off during high wind conditions. BHP proposed the installation of wind fences across its Port Hedland operations, targeted at reducing emissions from wind dependent sources, primarily stockpiles, by reducing the wind speed downwind of the wind fence. Modelling predicts that installation of the wind fence will significantly reduce emissions from stockpiles, particularly at BHP’s western operations (Finucane Island). To be effective in shielding stockyards and reducing wind speeds, the wind fences are located upwind and as close as practical to the open stockyards. BHP’s wind fence design incorporates learnings from other existing installations and has been tailored for Port Hedland’s cyclonic conditions. The wind fence will be higher than the stockpile height, with a mesh porosity of approximately 50 per cent. The mesh porosity allows some of the wind to pass through the mesh. This reduces the wind turbulence downstream of the wind fence, as opposed to a solid wind fence, which increases downwind turbulence, resulting in increased dust.

As Pliny commented two millennia ago, The only certainty is that nothing is certain. Despite the many breakthroughs, advances and promises, the way we each live and work remains awash with technological, economic and political uncertainty. The resources sector is no exception in this regard. Mining itself is much more than a complicated process or recipe; it is a complex adaptive system. The way we adopt and adapt new technologies, the way we evolve data into corporate wisdom, the way we make decisions and even the way we view our concept of rationality should each be the subject of intense review. Translating these sentiments into sustainable company growth is indeed the challenge. This is unlikely to be achieved within convention, but through innovation. The game is changing!

At times of high metal prices, mining projects that have previously been put into the ætoo hard basketÆ are now being more closely examined. Typically these projects include the potential recovery of small mineable tonnes with high contained metal values and often with poor ground conditions. For many underground mining projects, the drift and fill method is viewed as a high-cost method and a æmethod of last resortÆ. As a result the method is not well known in Australia and it is the authorsÆ view that the method is under utilised. The drift and fill method can be applied to a variety of underground mining situations and is a preferred method for some orebody geometries and where ore recovery is viewed as a key to project success. This paper examines some of the critical mine planning and backfill issues involved with the drift and fill mining method.
