The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

Mining and processing of pyrite ore at Iron Duke Mine, north east of Zimbabwe, generates large quantities of acidic mine water as a result of the oxidation of iron sulfides on exposure to air and water used in the drilling and blasting operations. The acid mine drainage (AMD) contains elevated levels of dissolved Fe, Al, Mn and sulfate and has characteristic pH values ranging from about 0.50 to 3.00. Handling and disposal of such a drainage places significant impacts on the economics of the mining operation due to the corrosive nature of the drainage on infrastructure, the limitations placed on water reuse and discharge to the environment under a new law governing effluent discharge. Treated sludge at Iron Duke is chemically unstable, changing pH from ~7 to ~3 within four days after deposition in the evaporation ponds. The effluent does not meet the permitted level of neutral pH, 500 mg/l sulfate and less than 2000 mg/l total dissolved solids. Excessive acid seepage from the evaporation ponds has resulted in contamination of the ground water below the ponds area, which shows high mean annual levels of iron (368.67 mg/l), sulfate (1702.89 mg/l) and low pH (2.86) in addition to other pollutants. This poor quality seepage infiltrates into the nearby Yellow Jacket River, contaminating the public water source. Furthermore, a deterioration of the land area and vegetation adjacent to the tailings dump is also observed. Understanding the controls on the neutralisation of acidic drainage and long-term sludge stability after placement in evaporation ponds is essential to minimise costs of closure requirements and for the protection of environment and human health. This study examined the effects of the master variables pH, redox potential, acidity and alkalinity on acid neutralisation. The results indicate that ferrous hydroxides are not as stable as ferric hydroxides and that proper oxidation of iron also leads to better sludge stability, higher treatment efficiency and a manageable sludge viscosity. Metal hydrolysis and secondary mineral formation at the evaporation ponds under a wide range of pH and redox conditions is responsible for equilibrium shifts in metal reactions, resulting in high potential for metal leaching and mobility. Mechanisms of metal attenuation are also discussed.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

"Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

The paper briefly des- cribes the principles of efficient feeding and discusses the common types of feeders under practice. While ideally unaided gravity flow should be sought, occasions arise where flow promotion is necessary. Various types of flow promotion devices are described and their operational features evaluated.

This paper discusses the development of a strategy for ensuring long-term geotechnical stability of final pit walls at AngloGold AustraliaÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. The strategy makes use of improved blasting techniques, changes to the mining sequence and other geotechnical techniques. Only the blasting techniques will be discussed in this paper. These were developed from numerous trials over a period of several months from May 2003 through to November 2003. The focus was to reduce crest loss damage and thereby improve final wall integrity, maintain designed safe berm widths, and ensure long-term stability. Crest loss mechanisms are now understood and are explained in this paper. The preferred solution is outlined; which is a combination of improved blasting and changes in the mining sequence to cater for pre-existing ground conditions. These ground conditions include dynamic hyper saline water with sometimes intersecting steeply dipping discrete structures. Project requirements were defined as mitigating or eliminating crest loss using 127 mm diameter pre-splitting and targeting minimal production blasting vibration levels against the walls. Blast results were measured by post blast visual inspections and video. Blast design input utilised the predictive algorithms built into simulation software when attempting to minimise vibration levels against the walls. Protection of the already fired pre-split line is now achieved using small charges against the wall and timing sequences which form a mask for the later firing main charges. The pre-split spacing is now modified to suit the geology. There eight blast domains identified around the perimeter of the pit, each having varying joint orientation. In addition, blasting the bench adjacent to the berm crest has particular considerations not required by the middle and lower benches. The preferred solution was to purposefully translate this damaged top section of the pre-split bench into a planned subsequent dig zone. The design of this top æweightÆ is a direct response to the nature of the crest loss mechanism.

The commonly accepted genetic theories of Pilbara iron ores and Woodie Woodie manganese ores have often presented them as quite unique. This apparent uniqueness is not confined to just iron and manganese, but is also seen in gold and copper deposits in Western Australia. The published material on iron and manganese ores would seem to have either a quite complicated genesis or none at all. An alternate theory for the origin of these deposits is presented which involves a protore with simple oxidation and pH controls with hydrothermal fluid sources from the diagenesis and dewatering of the underlying strata. This theory explains the distribution, thinning, cold dolerites and very high concentrations of deleterious minerals observed in these deposits. This genesis system is also related to the systems that deposit hydrothermal gold and copper in sediments in the region.This paper presents the author’s observations, sampling and mapping after several decades studying and exploring for the minerals in Australia and locations overseas. All of these theories were developed with (or in spite of!) the guidance of Mal Kneeshaw, but would never have seen the light of day without him and the others presenting here. It is not what I would call scientifically polished, and possibly deserves more detailed studies; it is, however, presented as a discussion paper.CITATION:Schwann, P B, 2015. Geological logging by mine and exploration geologists involves the application of a logging code that requires a geologist to make a subjective decision to classify a particular rock unit. This will most likely result in inconsistencies in logging that will be difficult to monitor or assess over time. A potential solution to this problem is to have an objective method to determine the true nature of a given rock unit. This can be achieved using portable X-ray fluorescence technology (pXRF), as large geochemical data sets can be collected rapidly and at low cost. Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Western Australia, has a growing data set of more than 150 000 pXRF multi-element analyses from core and underground face samples, reconciled to Au fire-assay concentration, and logging codes. This study investigates and statistically validates the consistency with which the logging codes have been applied at Plutonic for the last four years, with respect to both Au distribution and other elements. In doing so, we have developed a schema that allows objective logging to occur once core has been sent for assay and analysed by pXRF. Over the past 15 years, the mining industry has begun to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development and sustainable mining practice across the life cycle of mineral operations. This requires addressing economic issues, community impacts and concerns and environmental protection, and is captured in part by the phrase ‘design for sustainability’ (McClellan et al, 2009). Over the same period, the industry has seen a gradual decline in ore grades for many mineral commodities. As a result, large volumes of tailings and mine waste rock are being produced around the world, and it is expected that the annual production volumes of these materials will increase, even if there is not a significant change in the demand for materials.Another related thread of change has been the realisation that societies need to move away from linear economies (raw materials, production, consumption, disposal) towards more circular ones. This will help societies become more resource efficient, which is defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as reducing the total environmental impact of the production and consumption of goods and services, from raw material extraction to final use and disposal. The goal is to create more with less and deliver greater value with less input. Circular economies require thinking in terms of the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, recover, landfill).The challenge is that the waste hierarchy was originally designed to address embodied mineral content in products rather than mine waste and tailings generation. It will need to be reconsidered in a mine life cycle context, focusing on a value-based conception of waste (Van Ewijk and Stegemann, in press).In parallel to these changes, it has remained an imperative in the mining industry to dispose of these waste materials as economically as possible while protecting the environment. Single handling of these materials has been the main target, which reduces the life cycle costs of their management but may make reuse of waste and tailings technically more difficult or economically infeasible.This presentation explores a rethinking of the large volume earthen material waste issue at mines. The underlying theme is that some or all of these materials can be valuable resources for the future that can positively contribute to sustainable development. These resources can offer economic gains to firms, communities and societies; contribute to environmental well-being; enhance social interactions with the previously mined landscape if handled properly; and, with proper policies in place, reduce governance commitments. Each of these topics will be briefly explored. The production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite using hydrochloric acid leaching is investigated. Previously published data is used to comment on the optimum process conditions. It is shown that the most important aspect to consider is the maximisation of impurity dissolution and the minimisation of titanium losses.

The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

The sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft being mainly concerned with providing for the continuation of mining operations north of the existing workings, requirements for the shaft and haulage equipment were assessed, having in mind the anticipated needs of the Company in future years, the .available knowledge and probable future trends of the orebody, and also that the shaft would be required to act as a downcast airway for the ventilation system associated with the northern underground workings.

This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and cesting campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and altei._acive, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic Fill.

Gold mineralisation was first noted in 1983 at the Wapolu Point area of Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea (PNG) during a follow-up regional reconnaissance program. Subsequent exploration programs through to late 1987 completed 22,147m of costean trench sampling, 553 aircore/RC/diamond core drill holes (16,970.5m total) and metallurgical testwork, predominantly on the Wapolu grid in two mineralised areas.Subsequently in 1988, geostat-istical global and polygonal resources were calculated for the main mineral-ised zones, Didigayagaya and Dagwalala. In 1992, a 'probable total reserve' of 1.9Mf @ 2.4g/t with a 1.2g/t cut-off was calculated for these prospects.
