This paper presents a waste rock treatment and rehabilitation program conducted at a metaliferous mine site in northern New South Wales from 2000–2013. It updates findings from 2005 for Program #1 (which examined acidity, leachable metals and tree growth in a control and three treated areas of waste rock) and includes new results for Program #2 (which examined acidity, plant uptake of metals and trace elements and tree growth in a control and four treated areas compared to undisturbed background levels) and Program?#3 (which examined the treatment and revegetation of submerged mine tailings and an exposed tailings beach).Program #1 showed low soil pH in the control area remained unchanged from years 1–14, and soil pH in the limed and capped areas was initially increased but fell back to starting levels within 12 months and remained low for 14 years. In contrast, soil pH in the Terra B area resulted in soil high pH immediately after treatment and increased in years six and 14 without further treatment. Tree height and density in 2005 and again in 2013 indicated acidity in the control, limed and capped areas suppressed tree height and density; however, in the Terra B area, revegetation in 2013 was comparable to undisturbed forest. Outcomes in the control, biosolids and three Terra B areas in Program #2 were similar to those observed in Program #1.Program #3 showed the submerged and exposed tailings initially had low pH and high concentrations of total and leachable metals before treatment, but these became non-leachable after treatment with Terra B. Revegetation was achieved on the tailings beach, with almost uniform colonisation of bulrush and common reed, along with bottlebrush and golden wattle; a variety of reptiles have also been observed on the revegetated tailings beach, along with migrating ducks, spoonbills and grebes.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Scutts, T, ?2014. Oil can enter a flotation circuit from a number of sources (for example, from mining equipment, oil leaks from the grinding equipment and coatings on the grinding media, but to name a few). Folklore generally states that any oil that contaminates the ore entering the flotation circuit is considered to have a negative impact on flotation. That is, a loss in concentrate grade and recovery.This represents a dilemma for some grinding media suppliers, who use a variety of quenching medium (air, polymer, oil or water) to achieve the desired physical properties of the ball. In the case of high chrome grinding media it is necessary, in some instances, to quench in oil to give the ball the right degree of toughness, which invariably leads to these balls having a thin film of oil on their surface. Once the grinding media arrives on site and site personnel recognise that the balls are “covered” in oil, they generally insist that the oil will have a deleterious impact on flotation performance.Obviously, any supplier “worth their salt” would take remedial action at the point of manufacture to minimise this problem. However, does quenching oil actually present a significant “threat” to the flotation process? This paper provides both laboratory and plant data describing the effect quenching oil has on the flotation of copper sulphide ore, with surprising results!

Atlas Iron Limited’s McCamey’s North project lies at the eastern end of the Hamersley Basin, approximately 50 km east of Newman, Western Australia, and 3 km northeast of BHP Billiton’s Jimblebar Mine. The presence of significant surface iron mineralisation identified during field reconnaissance, has subsequently been further defined by detailed mapping and RC drilling.The project area is dominated by outcrops of moderate to steeply north and south dipping banded iron formation, cherts and shales of the Boolgeeda Iron Formation overlying rhyolites and rhyodacites of the Woongarra Volcanics. In lower lying areas recent colluvium and alluvium mask the Archaean geology. Drilling and downhole geophysics has allowed a composite stratigraphic section to be compiled through almost the entire Boolgeeda Iron Formation.Surface orientations and subsurface stratigraphic correlations using natural gamma logs indicate large scale open folding about east-west trending fold axes across the project area; while small scale tight to isoclinal folding with similar fold axis orientations are visible at the outcrop scale. These folds are cut by a number of moderate to steeply south-dipping normal faults defining a series of north-dipping fault blocks which repeat the stratigraphy across the project area.Bedded iron mineralisation consists mainly of haematite-martite and goethite ores with best results of 78 m @ 60.5 per cent Fe. Vitreous goethite is observed at the surface of the mineralised horizons. The mineralisation exhibits a strong stratigraphic control and extend down-dip up to 120 m below surface. The strike extent of the mineralisation is still to be determined. An inferred resource of 39 Mt at 58 per cent Fe has been defi ned to date (ASX: AGO 3 February 2011).The fi ndings at McCamey’s North indicate that there is potential for economic iron mineralisation to exist in other areas of Boolgeeda Iron Formation within the Hamersley Basin.

The difficulty of accurately sampling cyanide gold bullion for valuation is well known, and nothing new or original is claimed in presenting this paper, but it was thought that a record of differences in the composition of bullion bars found here may be of interest to others, and perhaps helpful to those who have to do with theevaluation of cyanide bullion. This investigation was made after reading Mr. Sydney W. Smith's interesting paper on the Liquidation in Molten Alloys.*A method was in use of boring each ingot in two places and mixing the two borings for the sample. More accurate values were obtained, however, when the bullion was sampled in a molten condition immediately before casting into the ingot; the sample being so taken as to preclude oxidation of base metals before solidification of the sample.In all, samples from 32 ingots were assayed, and comparisons made between the existing boring sample and the proposed dip sample. Assays were also made of two other portions of the borings from each ingot, and the results show that in the majority of cases the borings sample assays higher in gold than the dip sample of the same ingot.The largest ingot cast weighs approximately 920 troy ounces, and has the dimensions shown in the attached sketch (Fig. 1). Ingots are cast in 0.1. moulds i in. thick, smoked and heated.METHOD OF TAKING BORING SAMPLES OF BULLION BARSThe bar is cleaned from adhering slag and drilled in two places only, to a depth of i-in., one hole on the top near one end and the other in the bottom at the opposite end of the bar.

A modified liquation technique was developed for recovering tin from tinhouse scruff metal or hardhead containing about 10 per cent iron and 15 per cent occluded flux, palm oil, and moisture. This was effectedby heating the scruff metal to 950°C followed by rapid cooling to suppress the formation of FeSn2 and FeSn, and then subjecting it to the ordinary liquation and drossing processes of refining. By this method it was possible to recover about 83 per cent of the original tin content and, with subsequent smelting of the irony drosses, an overall recovery of 92 per cent was obtained.

Admixture use in cement products is commonplace in the construction and mining industries. Many Australian mines have an operational concrete batch plant and stock hydration control and water reducing admixtures. The benefits of admixture use, especially in shotcrete is understood and well documented. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used to fill stope voids and create stable vertical and undercut surfaces at some Australian mines. These mines generally mix rock fill with a slurry of cement and water without the use of admixtures. Recently published work on optimisation of CRF mixes has mainly focused on the strength increases associated with changes to the mix grading proportions by the addition of fines, but not focusing on the potential benefits of admixture use. Admixture use in CRF may be the simplest CRF optimisation method, as the admixtures will often be added by the push of a button at the batch plant. A CRF testing program was undertaken to test the benefits of admixture use in terms of strength gain, using hydration control additives (HCA) and high range water reducer (HRWR) admixtures. Rock fill gradings were strictly controlled in the test process to allow clear definition of the difference admixtures provide in compression at 28 days. The testing results define admixture associated strength gains in a 6 per cent general purpose (GP) cement by dry weight CRF mix (131 kg of cement/m3). Costings have been developed to allow a mine operator to understand the cost benefits of admixture use in CRF due to reduced operating costs. Operational efficiency advances and a suggested admixture implementation plan for CRF optimisation is offered.

With blasting, all far-field phenomena including, but not limited to, stress wave propagation, fracture, vibration and muck pile formation are intrinsically and irrevocably dependent upon near-field phenomena or mechanisms that we describe using physics-based mathematics typically transcribed into computer codes. The energetics involved in such near- to far-field transitions are not fundamentally relevant as they are simply progenitors of these processes.The notion of explosive energy as a descriptor for explosive or blasting performance is a case in point. These energies, which are generally used in blasting tables, are almost exclusively based on ideal detonation theory alone and do not include the influence of the rock, charge diameter, blasthole length and the late-time dynamic expansion that can be predicted using codes based on non-ideal detonation theory.With decoupled charges in presplits for example, the pressure drop between the charge and the blasthole wall can be simply described to first order using the energy relationship associated with adiabatic expansion. Backfill systems using unconventional cementitious hinders have been successfully used in relatively deep and hard rock tabular mines for longwall, scattered stoping and shaft pillar removals. Two unconventional cementitious systems are discussed: 1. A ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) with an activator containing lime. This has been used with a total tailings 'stable' slurry at a relatively low dosage of less than seven per cent, by mass, based on dry solids. The room and pillar stopes supported with this fill were up to 20 in high and the tailings were relatively high in pyrite. .\ GGBS binder plus a silicate based activator and gelling agent that virtually eliminated all water drainage (and hence post filling shnnkage). The system used a slurry, but the addition of the ;iutivator created a final placed product that had the behaviour of a paste. The system has been successfully used for almost ten years in the following applications: ò sloping widths (mining heights) above 1.6 in; and ò shaft pillar removals in seismically active areas at the end of the life of the shafts. \This paper discusses the technical merits and costs of the systems and compares them to other fill systems (including true paste systems).

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013. Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. In addition, a case study comparing two different density determination methods applied to the same rock samples from the Los Bronces Copper mine was undertaken and the results of that study are presented here.Selecting the most appropriate method to determine density and comparing results from two or more techniques against each other, together with other suitable quality control procedures, is considered to be of utmost importance for all mining operations and exploration projects.CITATION:Makhuvha, M, Arellano, R M and Harney, D M W, 2014. Mechanically coupled rock bolts encapsulated in cementitious or polyester cartridge resin grouts have been widely adopted for various underground rock reinforcement applications. Resin grouts are considered a superior product, however, both systems have their advantages and limitations, with the relative performance, quality installation cost and cycle time as the most notable parameters. Both applications have optimal rock bolt combinations and preferred ground conditions. Cementitious grouts are favourable for use with secondary deep embedment anchors. These are installed using various equipment with a series of autonomous tasks required to complete the installation cycle. The cartridge resin system can be utilised by a bolting or face boring rock drill to complete the full support installation cycle. This reduction in equipment changeouts mid-cycle generally deems it the more practical application and popular choice for primary support. Self-drilling anchors (SDAs) and hollow bolts have been a viable alternative to traditional rock reinforcement in variable and challenging ground conditions. Using a pumpable post installation grouting system, SDAs have proven to aid the quality of installation, but due to the additional equipment and cycle steps associated with application, the cycle time is increased. In recent years, fully mechanised bolting equipment designed to utilise a combination of self-drilling anchors and a thixotropic pumpable resin installed in a single pass has entered the market. This innovation is anticipated to deliver the advantages described above, with fewer limitations, and significantly improved development and rehabilitation rates. St Barbara Mining and Byrnecut Australia, supported by Master Builders Solutions, were first to conduct extensive trials and implement this rock bolting approach in an Australian hard rock underground mine and record the actual performance.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is a gold mine that is located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Drilling and blasting activity is applied in order to support mining production. Drilling and Blasting (D&B) planning is conducted by its engineers. A drilling and blasting contractor conducts drilling and blasting activity. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of the scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) in explosive charging sheet application to increase blast efficiency. The function of the scaled depth of burial is to maintain stemming height above explosive charge in order to prevent the ‘over energy’ condition, to reduce the excessive fly rock possibility, to maintain rock fragmentation (digger’s productivity) and to increase blast efficiency. The focus of this paper is to implement the scaled depth of burial as a reference in D&B planning and practice, especially in designing stemming height. The purpose of this paper is to validate that the scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool in D&B practice in PT.IMK. However, scaled depth of burial cannot applied as an engineering tool to determine stemming height above explosive charge for trim blastholes and secondary blasting area. In general, the implementation of the scaled depth of burial in PT.IMK is applicable for production blastholes (ore and waste blasting). In conclusion, it is clear that scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool to create explosive charging sheet and also to increase blast efficiency (ore and waste blasting) in PT.IMK.

Namakwa Sands is a mineral processing company based on the West Coast of South Africa and is solely owned by Exxaro Resources Limited. Mineral ore is mined and processed, concentrated and both chemical and mechanically upgraded before being sent for electrostatic and magnetic separation units. The final high value mineral products report as Zircon, Rutile and Ilmenite.The recovery of non-magnetic material is largely dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to dew point, ambient temperature, feed rate, mineral size distribution, specific gravity and mineral content in head feed. One important limiting factor to recovery in typical dry mill operations is the particle size distribution of the feed. Variance in the particle size has catastrophic consequences for recovery. This is the reason for this study. Until recently large variances in non-magnetic production were viewed to be a function of machine operation. This view was later rejected with the feed size distribution determined as the major driver of low recoveries, for Namakwa Sands orebody 50 per cent variance in particle size distribution can be noticed within one day. This is because of the successive mining blending techniques employed.The predicament is that the two modes were so closely placed together that recovery of a single mode is almost impossible without the consequence of greatly reducing recovery. The second mode was found at 125 µm while the first was at 90 µm. Interestingly, for the mentioned feed type a cumulative size distribution of a unimodal feed type is almost exactly the same as for a bimodal size distribution. Thus a plot of cumulative size distribution will show no difference due to the modes being so close together. This is the reason why this phenomenon was not noticed before.The study also found that, using an high tension roll (HTR) or rare earth roll, a fine stream with a single mode at 90 µm versus a coarse stream with a single mode at 150 µm would yield completely different results interms of yields. Larger conductive particles are thrown from the roll while small particles loose charge faster (entrainment). Results in terms of the bimodal size distribution show that even though 25 per cent of the feed type is greater than 150 µm the yields followed a similar pattern to that of the coarse particles rather than that of the majority (75 per cent) fine particles. This confirms what was published by M Ziemski and P N Holtham in 2005 on charge decay rates; they mentioned that particle bed effects played a major role in recovery.

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.

This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

A bulk mineral analyser (BMA) suitable for the determination of Cu or Ni in bulk ore samples has been developed at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories. This analyser, which uses the nuclear resonance scattering technique, is highly specific to the wanted element. The technique has previously been extensively field tested for copper at Mount Isa, Queensland.The present paper discusses the field trial in 1982 of a commercial prototype BMA for nickel. The trial was undertaken at the lateritic nickel mine at Greenvale, Queensland. The BMA and its shielding, together with a laboratory spectrum analyser, were sited in the sample shed adjacent to the workings. Two hundred and thirty-eight ore samples taken directly from the mine blastholes were assayed by the BMA. The average mass of sample was 12 kg, metal contents varied from 0.2 to 3.5 wt/per cent Ni and 4 to 43 wt/per cent Fe and free moisture varied from 11 to 55 wt/per cent. A measurement took 10 min to complete, although this time could have been reduced at the higher nickel grades. The r.m.s. deviation between BMA and chemical assays was 0.09 wt/per cent nickel. Iron and bulk density were also determined by the BMA, r.m.s. deviations being 1.7 wt/per cent and 0.03 g/cmJ respectively. Similar results could be expected from a BMA in routine industrial use at other nickel mines.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.
