Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. In doing so, the paper will evaluate the recommendations proposed by the Productivity Commission Report on Major Project Assessments released in 2013, which include the recommendation to move to a ‘one project, one assessment, one decision’ regulatory model.CITATION:Pope, C and Tannock, M, 2015. The Morley Coal Measures (Upper Cretaceous) at Ohai Coalfield were deposited in an intermontane basin alluvial environment of entirely terrestrial aspect. Within this regional setting, three distinct types of depositional environment are recognised; these are: (i) a sand-dominated (South Saskatchewan type) braided river system characterized by channel-bed dunes and possibly compound bars; (ii) a well-drained floodplain environment frequently subject to crevasse-splay and overbank-flow sedimentation; and (iii) a poorly-drained, commonly peat-accumulating backswamp environment locally traversed by tributary drainage systems and occasionally inundated by crevasse splays and overbank flows. All major coal seams of the Morley Coal Measures originated within forest moors under predominantly telmatic (periodically inundated) conditions. The peat-forming vegetation comprised largely arborescent forms (dominantly conifers), in addition to pteridophytes and bryophytes. In-seam vertical variations in coal type indicate groundwater levels initially decreased and then increased during the lifetime of a particular peat swamp, possibly in response to a change in the migration direction of an adjacent fluvial system. The proposed depositional model for the Morley Coal Measures has the potential to be utilised during exploration programmes and mine development to impart greater objectivity to predictions concerning seam geometry and continuity, trends in coal type and quality, and likely roof and floor conditions.

Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.

The Australian mining industry is a significant contributor to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and like any industry, it must make efforts to reduce these. Medium- and long-term strategies will include the replacement of diesel engines with alternative energy sources, but what can be done in the short-term to reduce diesel consumption and hence CO2 emissions? Haul trucks are identified as the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the mining fleet and this paper focuses on firstly identifying what drives haul truck emissions and secondly, discussing what is the role of the Fleet Management System (FMS) in reducing these. A key enabler of this is having a robust fuel consumption model within the FMS, and I describe how this may be done. Besides novel approaches to incorporating fuel consumption (CO2) management into truck assignment algorithms, this paper also describes how the FMS can be used to implement and manage procedures and policies to reduce haul truck emissions.

In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. The rapid expansion of gold production in Australia over the last five years can be attributed in part to the development of selective mining techniques for open pit gold operations. These techniques allow an increase in head grade with a substantial reduction in mill feed tonnage, as compared with traditional open pit designs. As a result, the capital requirements for mine development and mill construction are substantially reduced, improving the cash flow profile in the early years of operations. To put such a design into effect, the emphasis of mine production must be on producing gold, rather than tonnes of ore. Mine planning at Martha Hill has been based on such a philosophy. After the quantity and grade of the resource had been defined, the exploration programme was increasingly concerned with the local variability of ore zones, and with determining the position of values within broad ore-definition envelopes. The purpose of this work has been to allow the prediction of the tonnages and grades achievable from various levels of the pit when mining selectively using hydraulic excavators. The studies have so far indicated that the Martha Hill deposit can be mined selectively during the early years of production. The additional costs for detailed grade control and a reduced digging efficiency are more than compensated by the exclusion from the mill feed of much valueless material.

This paper highlights strategies used at the Barrick operated Kibali Gold Mine (KGM) to improve the drilling accuracy and blasting effectiveness for longhole open stoping. The mine currently uses Solo DL421 for the required stope drilling and has experienced an average deviation of 10 per cent. Strategies are raised to eliminate or at least mitigate the adverse effects of blasthole deviation and the impact of blasting induced effect at the stope faces including the stope crown. The integration of deviation trends in the design would allow the actual blastholes to be established within their required positions to then facilitate a proper energy distribution with the eventual production blasting. The implementation of stope undercutting reduces the hole length from 35 m to 30 m which in return decreases blasthole deviation by 3 per cent. Another strategy adopted to improve the drilling accuracy is to slow down the penetration rate with the use of several operating approaches, including 135 MPa percussion pressure, 65 rev/sec rotation speed and 17 MPa feed pressure. To this penetration rate, a constant k factor is applied to increase the rate when the bedding inclination is less than 45° from the horizontal or when the hole length is under 10 m. This reduces deviation by a further 4 per cent. Where the rock mass is highly jointed it is advised to use the average penetration rate over the entire length of the hole. Furthermore, the paper shows the effect of deviation on the blasting results through a prediction of fragmentation blasting model optimised with reduced deviation and highlights the effect of presplit mining and timing delay on the blasting effectiveness. Although the size pattern increases with deviation, a strategy pertaining to timing delay with blasting would be to align to the work of Grant (1990) where the optimum hole to hole delay is found to be between 7–10 ms/m of spacing, while the optimum delay between adjacent ring varied between 110–160 ms. Stabilisation of crowns and wings will perform with the implementation of presplit blasting.

Ore roasting has long been used for beneficiation and assay upgrading of different ores. In this process, which is mainly used for sulfide ores, the ore is heated to a high temperature. More specifically, it is a metallurgical process involving gas-solid reactions at elevated temperatures. Some types of Iron ore are weak in magnetic properties. Hematite, goethite and limonite are classified in this group. Unlike magnetite, which shows strong magnetic susceptibility, these ores are hard to beneficiate through magnetic separation route. Many researches have focused on gravity separation and flotation routes for upgrading these ores and these methods have also been utilised in the industry. One of the methods to whose industrial application less attention has been paid is magnetising roasting in which the non-magnetic iron ore is transformed to magnetite which is further beneficiated through magnetic separation. In this study, magnetising roasting tests have been performed on one goethite sample in order to check the feasibility of using this method for this specific ore in industrial scale. It is worth mentioning that high intensity magnetic separation have been performed on this sample before but the achieved results were not promising. Results have revealed that through magnetising roasting magnetite content of the ore could be increased from 1.7 per cent up to about 25 per cent. FeO content of the feed sample was increased from 1.03 per cent up to around 9.25 per cent. Also optimum size distribution for achieving the best results in magnetising roasting for this sample has been determined through this study. The best results were achieved when the ore size was 0–10 mm. The effect of coal ratio, time and temperature on the process have also be studied. A coal ratio of 5 per cent, time of 30 min and a temperature of 850°C were determined to be the optimum conditions. Finally, the technical feasibility of utilising magnetising roasting for this specific ore has been confirmed.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being increasingly used by the mineral exploration industry in the search for new ore deposits. A mineral exploration GIS links geological and geophysical data by virtue of their geographic location in a digital map setting. Geological and geophysical data are categorised into a number of themes or layers within a mineral exploration GIS. These layers may include polygonal information such as rock type and tenements, line information such as faults and fold axes, point information such as mines and mineral occurences, and images such as gridded geochemistry and aeromagnetics. A mineral exploration GIS is a powerful tool to help the explorationist comprehend the spatial associations and interrelationships of his/her data. These spatial associations can be integrated with a mineral genesis model, to create a mineral prospectivity map to more effectively target exploration. Arguably a competent geologist who has a good understanding of the genesis of the local ore deposit types and knows their local geology backwards could intuitively derive a mineral prospectivity map. However, in an era of rapid data accumulation from many different disciplines, the ability to assimilate and understand is a huge task for any individual. A mineral exploration GIS enables the explorationist to spend more time analysing data and testing ideas, rather than finding and manipulating data into compatible formats.

Air quality is a big topic of discussion in regional mining communities as well as urban environments situated close to port terminals handling bulk solids. Community perception of poor air quality can significantly affect the reputation of the mining operation and handling facilities. Dust monitoring for regulatory compliance relies on using a handful of accurate but very expensive sensors, usually situated at the boundary, relatively far from the activities that generate the airborne dust. These reference monitors measure dust leaving the site but dust mitigation and management on-site largely relies on operator judgement. At a fraction of the cost, small wireless solar powered units can be used to supplement reference monitors in real-time. Due to their compact nature, portability and low price, these units can be implemented on a mass scale to increase spatial resolution of dust measurements and, more importantly, in much closer proximity to both the dust generating activity and the sources of dust. This can provide valuable insights into the origins and timing of dust generation thus producing datadriven decision-making while minimising subjectivity. Similarly, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is another supplemental technology that can be used to increase the spatial resolution of dust measurements in near real-time, however, the cost of commercial systems even exceeds that of regulatory monitors. LiDAR also presents difficulties in quantifying dust plume concentrations. This study presents learnings of implementing both technologies for dust emissions management. Several low-cost sensor units and a fast-scanning custom-built 3D LiDAR system operating at a range of 1.5 km with a resolution of 1.5 m were deployed on a surface mine to monitor dust emissions from different activities. The project explores the use of real-time sensor data to quantify LiDAR measurements in parallel with integration into mine planning. The approach can assist in prioritising dust mitigation activities thereby reducing instances of emissions exceedance and minimising water use through databased and targeted application. Demonstrated is an opportunity for a step-change in industry best practice as well as commercialisation and operationalisation of the method across different industries, including future mineral extraction.

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

Pyrrhotite crystallises as either a hexagonal or monoclinic structure, both of which can occur in ore deposits. In general, pyrrhotite is not considered as a valuable mineral unless it contains considerable amounts of other metals like nickel or copper. In fact it causes numerous problems in flotation including intensive oxygen consumption, which results in poor selectivity among sulphide minerals in the processing of complex sulphide ores. Also, because of its high sulphur content, pyrrhotite is a major contributor to environmentally detrimental sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from smelters. Pyrrhotite also interacts galvanically with grinding media via electrolyte species present in the flotation pulp, resulting in media corrosion. The most effective way to reject pyrrhotite is through a separation stage, which may be difficult when both types of pyrrhotite are present in the ore. In this regard depression of pyrrhotite through a flotation stage may be applied. Pyrrhotite depression by either intensive oxidation or by using sodium cyanide has been practiced. Results present in this work show that NaCN can depress pyrrhotite effectively when combined with an alkaline environment and low collector concentrations.

Both machines have enhanced the production capabilities and quality control of the Roscommon comminuition circuit and they will provide efficient and reliable crushing well into the next century.

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. Simcoa Operations is the only silicon smelter in the region and since the plant was commissioned in late-1989, has progressed from supplying silicon metal to the secondary aluminium market to the current position of supplying in excess of 90 per cent of its production to the high quality chemical and primary aluminium markets. This position has been achieved through the unique advantage which Simcoa has developed within the industry, namely raw materials, people and Simcoa's ability to adopt and use modern technology. A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Simcoa has continued its quality drive through the formation of 'Simcoa's Quality Leadership Process' which is planned to make Simcoa the best silicon producer in the world.
