The anthracite-producing region is in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania, and has an area of approximately 484 square miles. It is divided geographically into three separate fields, known as the Northern, Middle and Southern. The Northern field, with Wilkes-Barre approximately at its center, is a basin about 60 miles long and almost 6 miles wide at its greatest distance across. Generally speaking, it may be said that the coal measures in this field lie horizontally, or on slight pitches, and consist of from 11 to 19 veins of coal, varying in thickness from several inches to several feet. The intervening strata between veins may be composed of slate, clay, rock or shale, or a combination of several, and are sometimes very thin. This condition often causes a treacherous roof, therefore roof support and the attending hazard of mining are problems of concern. The Middle field is made up of a number of small basins of not very great depth, and the measures, which are in like number to those of the Northern field, are varying inclinations running from nearly flat to steep pitches. The Lower, or Southern field, is made up of basins of great depth, some being 4000 ft. deep, and its measures are mostly on very steep pitches. In certain sections this Southern field is being mined at an elevation of 1300 ft. below sea level, on a pitch ranging from 50' to practically vertical, and because of the tremendous pressure and the inherent gas in the seams, outbursts of coal frequently occur at the face, locally known as "bumps." These outbursts are accompanied by a rumbling noise, after which gas is usually found. This condition makes mining a difficult and extremely hazardous undertaking, and unusual skill is required on the part of the miner to drive and maintain openings necessary to the production of coal. Miners working in such seams on the heavy pitch must carry face batteries (Fig. 1) to afford proper protection while working at the face, because of the outbursts and free running coal. SOME of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized state-ment of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey's Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part dis-cusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have con-tributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways.

SUMMARY THE cost of labor turnover in industry is so large as to justify the adoption of almost any means to bring about its reduction. Intensive study has shown that faulty methods of hiring and discharging men is the most important factor in labor turnover. Complete control over hiring and discharging by the foreman is a relic of outgrown industrial conditions; centralized hiring permits this work to be put on a scientific basis and also does away with many serious evils that cannot otherwise be reached. Centralized hiring does not impair the authority of the foreman; he hires his men from the employment office and discharges them back to it, instead of from and to the street. The employment manager, being a direct representative of the employer, tends to restore the former relation of direct intercourse between employee and employer that was helpful in avoiding friction between them. Being a specialist, he is able to bring special knowledge and skill to bear upon the task of selling employment in his concern to desirable workmen; lie is also able to give the foreign workman the special attention he requires. Employment managers have been used for the past few years by a number of large organizations, a few of which are engaged in the mining and metallurgical industries. They have invariably reduced labor turnover, in some cases to as little as one-tenth of what it had been. So great a reduction is due in part to other changes made in the light of the data made available by scientific study of the labor problem. In my former paper on personnel work1 I advocated the more general use of the employment manager in mining and metallurgical enterprises as a means of reducing labor turnover. The form of organization recommended seems not be to understood by all, and I have requested the privilege of explaining it at greater length, since it is perhaps the most important factor of all in personnel work, and has a vital influence on the cost sheet of every industrial enterprise.

IN presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I have perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows : I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization. Values for interaction parameters in nonferrous systems, as calculated from published data, are tabulated and discussed. The influence of temperature on the parameter is derived and compared with the results of the literature study. Wagner's relationship between the interaction parameter and the self interaction coefficients is compared with the tabulated data. A problem which has been of considerable interest in the field of metallurgy is the prediction of the effect of one alloying element present in dilute concentration on the thermodynamic properties of another dilute alloying element. Ultimately, the prediction may be accomplished entirely from statistical mechanical considerations. At the present, however, the problem remains unsolved since liquid solution models which are simple enough for analytical treatment are inadequate for such purposes. Thus, we desire some means of organizing the information on dilute systems which will serve as a guide for further study on interactions in dilute alloys, and also provide a basis for the utilization of thermodynamic data in the engineering design of alloys.

SWISHER and ~urkdogan' have determined the solubility of oxygen in a iron. They found it to lie between 7 and 10.5 at.-ppm at 881°C. Using earlier work on the permeability of oxygen in bcc iron,' they arrived at the following expression for the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in bcc iron (k = Boltzmann's constant, T = absolute temperature): where The present authors3 have estimated the activation energy QD for the diffusion of oxygen in bcc iron in two different ways from various experimental data.2'4"6 In the first method QD + QS (QS = heat of solution for oxygen in bcc iron in thermodynamic equilibrium with solid FeO) was determined either from data on the reduction of FeO with hydrogen4 or from measurements of the internal oxidation of silicon in a iron.5 Using an estimate of QS from investigations of the oxygen solubility in 6 iron2 (in thermodynamic equilibrium with molten FeO) Q = 0.97 ev or Q~ = 1.06 ev were obtained. From the magnitude of these values it was concluded that oxygen migrates interstitially in bcc iron and that consequently the activation energy QD for diffusion of oxygen has to be identified with the migration energy E~ of the oxygen atoms. Therefore, for a second estimate of QD from the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in 6 iron at 1450" ~,~ we used the theoretical expression:3 (a = length of elementary cube edge, m = mass of interstitially diffusing atom, sM = migration entropy), applicable to diffusion via the octahedral interstices in bcc lattices. Taking sM = 3.8 k (migration entropy of carbon in a iron), one gets Q = 0.90 ev. Hence, in Ref. 3 Q = (0.98 *0.1) ev was proposed as a plausible value for the diffusion energy of oxygen in bcc iron. sM + 9 (9 = solution entropy for oxygen in bcc iron) can be determined from permeability measurements.4 Using the above-mentioned estimate for QS , the following expression for the solubility c (atomic concentration) of oxygen (in thermodynamic equilibrium with solid FeO) in bcc iron was derived: From [4] the solubility of oxygen at 881°C in a iron is calculated to lie between 0.6 and 12 at.-ppm. The coal industry was beset with work stoppages and strikes throughout the year, and there was some loss in markets to oil and gas. These conditions, along with the mild decline in industrial activity, the steel strike, and the reduction in exports, contributed to an unfavorable year for the industry. All coal mines are working three days a week at the time of writing, and in estimating production for the year, it will be assumed that the mines will continue to work on that basis through December. Total production of bituminous coal in 1949 is estimated at 420 million tons, which is 179,518,229 tons under the production in 1948. Anthracite production is expected to reach 39,400,000 tons as compared with 57,139,948 tolls in 1948, a loss of 17,739,948 tons. Coal stocks, as of January 1, 1949, were 69,373,000 tons but at the end of the year will have dropped to approximately 22 million tons. It is seldom the privilege of one who contributes to the Transactions of a technical society, to describe a new industry in which, by processes employed for the first time, are attained results of conspicuous value. There are but few such patches of virgin soil worth the tilling, within the area circumscribed by the industries which have experienced a regular and uniform development. New and startling methods in production are often announced as about to be introduced; but, as a rule, they take their place among the " large desires with most uncertain issues," or give new significance to the historic words of an eminent statesman concerning " the bright beginnings and the bitter end of a halcyon and vociferous proceeding." In this paper I shall have the pleasure of briefly describing a new industry which has been established without announcement or proclamation — the manufacture of serviceable pressure pipes of great strength, from strips of steel or iron wound spirally, heated only along the overlapping edges, welded by hammering and finished into tubes of uniform diameter, and of such length as mag be found convenient in handling and transportation. As such tubes are now manufactured on a considerable scale, in a range of sizes which will soon include everything between 4 inches and 30 inches, and as much larger as may be needed, both process and product are likely to be of interest to engineers in all departments of professional work. The raw material of the industry is the ordinary sheet-iron or steel of commerce, of such lengths and widths as it is convenient to roll. The range of the ganges of the metal which can be employed has riot yet been determined. The lightest metal thus far successfully made into pipe is No. 29 iron, and the heaviest a steel gauging somewhere between 12 and 14. Heavier machines are now building which will bend steel .165 of an inch in thickness, or No. 8 of' the Birmingham gauge. Probably No. 20 or No. 22 will be the lightest used in making commercial pipes; hut the experiment with No. 29 was interesting as showing the readiness with which the flame can be controlled. The Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailcd results of tests on four typical samples. Mineralogy of Batjxite The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2HzO). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (AlzOa.3H20), diaspore (A120a.H20), and boehmite (Alr-03.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2Hz0). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. History of Batjxite Beneficiatjon The literature on bauxite beneficiation is limited, but the reports of Gandrud and DeVaneyl and Clemmer, Clemmons, and Stacy2 show the possibilities of flotation as a means of beneficiating bauxite. Their work has also developed reagent combinations that are satisfactory for flotation of gibbsite.

INTRODUCTION The demand for aluminum metal and thus for alumina and bauxite (the primary sources), is expected to increase at an annual rate of about 6% through the year 1980. It appears that about 90% of the future aluminum metal requirements could be produced at domestic plants but the production would remain dependent on the use of imported bauxite and alumina. The U.S. dependence on foreign bauxite and alumina is of considerable economic and strategic concern because availability and prices are very sensitive to changes in the political climate in the exporting countries. Dependence of the United States on foreign sources of bauxite closely parallels its dependence on foreign sources of oil, particularly since ten countries, including most of the world's major bauxite exporting countries, recently have formed the Inter- national Bauxite Association (IBA) for the specific purpose of increasing revenue for the participating countries. Although it is clear that long-term aluminum requirements cannot be fulfilled by domestic resources of bauxite,; the U.S. has an almost unlimited supply of aluminous resources such as Kaolinite (38% Al203), Alunite (37% Al203), Dawsonite (35% A1203), and Anorthosite (29% A1203)

The Hog Mountain mine is a pyritic-gold property in the north central part of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, at an elevation of 800 ft. in the southern Appalachian region. It is 13 miles by a good secondary road from Alexander City, a station on the Central of Georgia Railroad. Since its discovery in 1839, the mine has been worked intermittently. The records of past operations are few and are scattered over a long period of time; however, available information indicates a production of approximately 12,000 oz. of gold prior to the present company's activities, which started in 1933. Additional 7844 oz. has been produced under the direction of the present management. The ore from stopes has averaged 0.200 oz. gold per ton; the ore from development, 0.136 oz. gold per ton. Silver, copper, iron and sulphur are also present but to date are of minor importance. The grade of ore in comparatively narrow veins makes necessary extreme vigilance in the methods of mining. Geology Wall Rock.—Hog Mountain consists of a quartz-diorite intrusion approximately 5000 ft. long by 1200 ft. wide. Its resistance to weathering, as compared to the surrounding schists, has led to the formation of a conspicuous ridge rising 400 ft. above the adjacent country. All the mining operations are confined within the limits of this quartz-diorite formation. Except where there is excessive shearing, either parallel or at flat angles to the quartz veins, all the walls of the stopes within the limits of the veins are strong enough to make timbering unnecessary. Where shearing exists, there may be a sloughing off of the walls, especially in the process of drawing the ore. When this occurs, stulls are placed in the stope, either while the stope is advancing, or while ore is being drawn from a completed stope. In general, very little timber is required. Veins.—The quartz veins have been deposited along fracture planes in the quartz diorite. There are 20 principal veins, all of which are roughly parallel and strike at right angles to the long axis of the formation.

A 2000-ton ammonia leaching plant has been operated by the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., at Lake Linden, Mich., continuousl~ since February, 1917, except from April, 1921, to April, 1922, during the period of depression following the European war. A description of this plant has been published elsewhere.1 The present article describes the operation of the plant since 1917, together with the changes in the process that have been found to be advisable. In spite of the fact that this plant and that of the Kennecott Copper Co. are the only ones operating on a large scale, much experimental work is being done on ammonia leaching, as applied to oxidized ores, and it is to aid these and other investigators that this detailed account is given. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the original article, the following short abstract is given, as an introduction to a more detailed account of the process and the reasons for present practice. Rêsumê of Previous Article Leaching on a commercial scale began in July, 1916, and by Februsry, 1917, the plant of 2000 tons capacity was in commission. The ore treated is a conglomerate containing native copper and no sulfides or oxidized copper minerals. Before leaching, the ore is crushed by steam stamps and Hardinge pebble mills to pass a 28-mesh screen. Free copper is removed, by gravity concentration, on Woodbury jigs and Wilfley tables, and colloidal slime for oil flotation is removed by quadruplex Dorr classifiers. The leaching sand remaining contains about 2 per cent. + 28-mesh material and 15 per cent. — 200-mesh and carries from 8 to 14 lb. of copper per ton, depending on the grade of ore worked. The Pinson Mining Co., which will start production in very early 1981, is the fourth Carbon-In-Pulp plant to be put into operation in the United States. The property is located in Humbolt County, Nevada, 38 km (24 miles) northeast of the town of Golconda. The famous Getchell Mine was also near Golconda and was the site of one of the early Carbon-In-Pulp plants in the 1940s. The deposit was discovered in 1971 by Reno based Cordilleran Explorations, which is founded by a consortium of Canadian mining companies. Cordilleran is a partnership consisting of John Livermore and Peter Galli. In 1972 a second but smaller deposit, called "Preble", was discovered at a location 15 miles south of Pinson. During 1980, a decision was made to place the Pinson deposit into production and Pinson Mining Company was formed. Ownership of Pinson is vested in Lacana Mining Inc. , Rayrock Mines, Inc. , Siscoe Metals, Inc., John S. Livermore, Peter E. Galli and Donald M. Duncan. Three distinct but connected ore zones occur at Pinson. Combined reserves of milling ore total 3, 200, 000 tons at an average (undiluted) grade of 4. 12 g per mt (0. 12 oz per st) Au. Initial mining will be from "A" zone which contains 1, 500, 000 tons with an average (undiluted) grade of 5. 8 g per mt (0. 17 oz per st) Au. An additional 5, 500, 000 tons of low grade ore will be mined from the Pinson deposit and processed by heap leaching. Mining reserves at Preble total at least 1, 500, 000 tons grading 2. 7 g per mt (0. 08 oz per st) Au. Production plans for the Preble deposit have not been formulated at the date of writing. Gold mineralization at both deposits is finely disseminated as sub micron sized particles. The ore at Pinson is structurally controlled and occurs in an Ordovician limestone-siltstone unit. Much of the ore has been silicified to a jasperoid. The ore zones have been entirely oxidized. Preble ore occurs in the Cambrian formation in a carbonaceous, limey shale. Only the upper part of the Preble is oxidized and amenable to conventional cyanide leaching. The Pinson ore body is adjacent to the mouth of Granite Creek in the Osgood Mountains at an elevation of 1, 615 m (5, 300 ft) with the mill being 1. 2 km (3/4 mile) from the mine at an elevation of 1, 495 m (4, 900 ft). THE term "low-sulfur coal," as used in this discussion, is limited to coals containing less, or very little more, than 1 per cent. sulfur. For certain purposes it might be advantageous to include coals that contain as much as 1.25 per cent. sulfur, because such coals have been considered as available for making metallurgic coke of fair grade; but the same reasoning might apply to coals containing as much as 1 ½ per cent. sulfur, if facilities exist for utilizing such coal by admixture with coal containing less sulfur. In Pennsylvania, it is not possible to define the exact geographic limits of the areas in which coals relatively low in sulfur exist, because variations in the percentage of sulfur occur irregularly and often abruptly. It is not uncommon to find areas, more or less circumscribed in extent, in which the coal is relatively high in sulfur although all the surrounding territory contains low-sulfur coal; and, similarly, small areas of low sulfur coal exist in districts where the coal is normally high in sulfur. These generalizations apply, With few exceptions, to the whole area underlaid with bituminous coal in the State of Pennsylvania, and also to each of the individual beds of coal in this state. Pennsylvania is poorly supplied with coals of the low-sulfur class. We find, however, as an offset to this condition, very large areas in which coal ranging from 1 to 2 ½ per cent. sulfur exists in beds of good workable thickness. This coal, by washing, can be reduced in sulfur low enough to make coke of a high grade. While a considerable tonnage of workable low-sulfur coal remains in the Pennsylvania bituminous dis-tricts, it has been necessary to turn to the areas of higher-sulfur coal for the supply of metallurgical coke. This utilization of the higher sulfur areas has been made possible either by washing or by selective mining. Washing.-Fine crushing of the entire feed is not generally necessary to the successful washing of Pennsylvania coals. The results of field measurements using an air injection technique to investigate the integrity of three pillars in the Mclntyre Mines Ltd. 114 seam at Crande Cache, Alberta, are reported. These pillars are shown to be stable and an estimate is made of the strength of these pillars. Using these results, together with Hustrulid's pillar strength formulae, a general pillar strength equation for the 114 seam is developed. This equation takes into account the probability of failure that may be deemed tolerable within the design requirements. The variation of the minimum pillar dimensions with depth below surface for uniform pillar layouts is then examined for a range of tolerable failure probabilities. A general equation of the form B = 2.60 +B Z relates the minimum pillar design width, B metres, with the overburden depth, Z metres, where B is a parameter related to the tolerable failure probability. This equation only applies for 3.05m high pillars with 6.lm wide entries. Finally, the question of what failure probability is tolerable within the design of mine pillars is discussed. This will depend on the support role required of that pillar and the anticipated period over which the pillar must perform that role. Five categories of coal mine pillars are defined, each with a somewhat different role to perform. Tentative design criteria in the form of "tolerable probabilities of failure" are suggested for four of these five categories of pillar. The fifth category of pillar has no reliable support function to perform and support must be obtained by other means.

The efficient and safe design of room-and-pillar coal mines still remains as one of the pressing problems facing the mining industry in the United States. Present day design is a trial-and-error approach based mostly on experience. Although much research has been directed to stability of mine roofs and coal pillars, no generally-accepted design method has been formulated. This paper reports on a three-year research effort directed to an improved design of room-and-pillar coal mining in the U.S.A. Essentially the study consisted of three aspects: (i) determination of stable roof spans; (ii) determination of the strength of coal pillars; and (iii) determination of safety factors for room-and-pillar coal mining in the United States. Furthermore, three novel approaches were utilized during this research: i) the "petite sismique" technique was assessed for possible determination of coal pillar deformability ii) the "Geomechanics Classification" was extended for determination of safe roof spans in room-and-pillar coal mining. iii) a national survey of the current design practice and mining dimensions was performed with the aim of assessing factors of safety for room-and-pillar coal mining The outcome of this work, which is summarized in this paper, is a design code for room-and-pillar mining in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of pulverized coal as a fuel for iron ore pelletizing to determine its effectiveness as a substitute for natural gas and oil. Experimental data illustrates the application of both a gun-type suspension burner and a cyclonic-type slagging burner to a grate-kiln pelletizing unit. In addition, experimentation with a cyclonic fired external combustion chamber for possible adaptation to a shaft or straight grate pelletizing furnace is discussed. The tests were conducted in the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center's pilot plant with high rank bituminous coals from Kentucky and Colorado and low rank subbituminous coals and lignites from Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. Although combustion was excellent with the suspension burner, the low ash fusibility temperature coals and lignites caused some kiln ringing and accretion buildup in the grate kiln transfer section which were not encountered when firing with the high ash fusibility temperature Kentucky coal. Pellet contamination by coal ash was not deemed substantial. Problems with the cyclonic burner and external refractory combustion chamber centered around (a) maintaining complete combustion of the coal within the burner, (b) molten slag attack on the lower refractory chamber resulting in erosion of the lining and increased slag viscosities, and (c) freeze-up of the slag tap hole.

Construction of the Ranger uranium project, located 230 kms east of Darwin in the Northern Territory, Australia, commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was A$407 million, made up of A$125 million in cash to the Federal Government and the issue of 125 million A$1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of A$16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd. (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd. (EZ). ERA's cash requirements to complete the project were estimated in October 1980 to be A$553 million. Project loans, secured by first ranking debenture stock, were arranged for a total of US$390 million, while second-ranking debenture loans totalling A$60 million were [ ] obtained from the vendors, Peko and EZ. Overseas participants (power utilities who had agreed to purchase uranium yellowcake under contract) arranged to take up 25% of the equity capital for A$102.5 million; Peko and EZ were allotted 30.5% each as satisfaction of vendors' consideration; and 14% representing A$57.5 million was issued to Australian residents in an underwritten public flotation in November, 1980. The loan and equity financing arrangements required the successful resolution of many complex and interlocking factors, including technical and economic feasibility, agreement with Aboriginal interests, compliance with Government policies, and securing of sales contracts.

While assaying some copper carbonate ore from the Frazer claims, Similakameen, B. C., I noticed that on parting the gold button a deep orange solution was formed. The button gave off pink bands in the nitric acid, which became deep orange at a short distance from it; and as it traveled over the surface of the porcelain dish, it left a deep orange track behind. As the button brightened in the cupel, it appeared to have a bronze color; but I have since found that when amarillium is in large excess of the gold, the button is a very dark gray. The button parted easily. To the orange solution I added a salt (NaCl) solution, shook in a silver testbottle, and filtered. With H2S I obtained a precipitate, which I supposed due to platinum. At the San Francisco meeting of the Institute last year, I presented, through the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas, some results of experiments on the roasting and leaching of concentrator tailings. After it became apparent that flotation rather than leaching was clearly the better method of handling the particular problem under consideration, before dismantling the experimental equipment, some data were secured on roasting and leaching the concentrate itself in competition with smelting. Some of the results obtained are given in the following paper and they are of particular interest at this time in view of the large quantities of flotation concentrates with their somewhat difficult smelting characteristics now being produced. A complete wet processt consists of roasting and leaching the calcines in dilute sulphuric acid produced from the roaster gases, roasting the residue with salt and leaching with dilute tower liquors (the well-known Longmaid-Henderson process) and recovering the copper, silver and gold by cementation or electrolysis or a combination of both. It is evident, however, that the residue from the first leaching, carrying about 20 per cent. of the copper and all of the silver and gold, can be smelted if preferable. In considering the application of the scheme to individual cases, it must be remembered that freight plays a large part in any reduction process wherein smelting is not conducted at the mouth of the mine, and that it is not practicable today to build small smelting plants for individual operations, The experiments may be grouped under four main heads: Roasting, leaching, chloridizing residue, and recovery of copper from solutions. The products of two concentrators were used: The Nacozari concentrates were the product of a large modern mill not using flotation, the copper mineral being largely chalcopyrite; and the Tyrone concentrates, the product of an experimental mill including flotation, the copper mineral being chiefly chalcocite.
