IT has been observed by a number of investigators that under certain conditions metals freeze into an aggregate of small hexagonal strands, parallel to one another and with their axes approximately in the direction of growth.'" This structure has been termed "cellular structure" and is explained in various ways by different workers, notably by Rutter and Chalmers." These investigators attribute the phenomenon to the presence of minute quantities of solute atoms which induce constitutional supercooling. However, if this is true, observations of the cellular structure in extremely pure substances, like frozen distilled water' and germanium of less than 0.0001 atomic pct metallic solute,' are difficult to comprehend. The purpose of this communication is to describe several observations made of the prismatic structure in zinc of 99.99 pct purity. Zinc single and bicrystals grown in a constant gradient electrical resistance furnace exhibit the cellular structure after etching in 15 pct HC1. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) It is noticed that the hexagonal substructure sometimes continues unbroken across the bicrystalline grain boundary.

Wabush Mines is the largest single supplier of iron ore to the Canadian steel industry, with 42% of its 6 million tpy of iron ore production going to the company's two Canadian owners-The Steel Co. of Canada and Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. Six other companies hold interests in Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. These are Lykes-Youngstown, Inland Steel Co., Intrerlake Steel Corp., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Co., Finsider of Italy and Pickands Mather & Co. Field work on Wabush began in mid-1957 when a long-range program of economic, geologic, and metallurgical investigations started. This work was followed in 1959 by the construction of a temporary camp and a 700-tpd pilot plant. At the same time, work was also started on a 38-mi railway connection to Ross Bay, Newfoundland.

This paper is concerned with the layout of a conveyor and beneficiation plant system involving several mines and a single point of delivery. The objective of the procedure is to locate the conveyor lines and beneficiation plants in an optimal manner considering the economics of scale inherent in both the transportation and beneficiation processes. Upon completion of the mining plan, the layout of the conveyor network is achieved through the principle of Steiner minimal trees. The optimal number and location of beneficiation plants for this layout are then determined using a sequential economic analysis based upon the flow of material from the individual sources to the ultimate destination. The practical aspects of the method and the advantages and disadvantages of its use are discussed to link the model to a practical problem.

Southwest of the town of Saltville in western Virginia is Plasterco, a small village that has been a source of gypsum production since 1815. Boasting the deepest underground gypsum mine in the world, Plasterco has been the site of mining operations by United States Gypsum Co. for more than half a century. And although its own ore supply is dwindling, Plasterco's position as a source of gypsum and gypsum products has been ensured by the recent opening of the nearby Locust Cove mine, one of U.S. Gypsum's newest projects. In the early days, production of gypsum at Plasterco was very small, the primary use of the mineral limited to that of "land plaster"-ground gypsum spread on the land to sweeten the soil. Initial mining was confined to surface outcrops containing gypsum, but the construction of a local plaster-producing calcining plant in the late 1800's coupled with al- most total depletion of the surface rock spurred the start-up of underground operations.

The rules laid down by Peter von Rittinger in his classic Lehrbuch der Aufbereitungskunde (Berlin, 1867, p. 513) concerning the designing of dressing-works still possess authority for such works and their operation. Nevertheless, some modifications and additions suggested by practice may be of value at the present time. Rittinger says: "I. Choose the apparatus and machines which can be, under the existing con-' ditions, easily constructed and kept in running order!' This rule contemplates the construction of apparatus (mostly of wood) on the spot, with the command of good sbops and especially of good workmen in wood. But in many cases, particularly for the sake of a prompt supply, the construction of apparatus is now left to special manufactories, which pay more attention in the choice of materials to durability and strength than to easy manipulation and erection. Demerara Bauxite Co. in British Guiana has come a long way in tackling the problem of stripping and removing overburden. When the company started mining in 1917, overburden was hand-loaded into carts pulled by donkeys. Since then it has been recognized that overburden removal is one of the greatest problems. Over the past years a great quantity of equipment has been purchased, discarded as it became obsolete, and replaced with better and cheaper tools. The policy has kept the company's overburden removal costs within reason. Accurate records of costs per cubic yard and cubic yards per hour per unit have been kept for many kinds of equipment. Walking draglines and hydraulicking equipment are the key approaches to the current operation, but shovels, tractor-drawn wagons, self-propelled rubber tired scrapers, and tractor-scrapers still have limited applications. Mackenzie, operational headquarters of the Demerara Bauxite Co. Ltd., is on the Demerara River, 65 miles from Georgetown, British Guiana. Ore treatment and ship loading facilities are at Mackenzie, head of navigation for ocean-going vessels and the mines are located 7 to 40 miles farther upstream.

In recent years examination of thin foils of metals and alloys has been widely used in studies of deformation and phase-transformation mechanisms. Applications of this technique to studies of titanium and titanium alloys have been infrequent. Therefore, as a large number of titanium alloys have been investigated in this laboratory, it is proposed to give an account of methods used. Particular emphasis will be placed on some of the artifacts introduced in thin foils of titanium and titanium alloys during preparation. Experimental Procedure. It has been found that a large number of titanium alloys can be electropolished in a solution consisting of 30 cu cm perchloric acid (60 pct), 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 300 cu cm methyl alcohol. Thin foils are prepared using the window method and the electropolishing conditions listed in Table I. Although this solution is not unique, it is attractive because of its low concentration of perchloric acid and the wide range of alloys for which it can be used. Electropolishing is conducted at below -25°C as above this temperature a brown anodic film is produced on the specimen surface. Temperatures above -25°C also accentuate preferential attack of the 0 phase in the two-phase alloys, which unfortunately occurs at all temperatures. Contamination. It is advantageous to reduce the specimen to a thickness of 25 to 50 p prior to electropolishing, since the low-temperature electropolishing technique results in a low rate of metal removal. TOTAL global war is making extraordinary demands on the oil industry. Huge quantities of 100-octane gasoline, extreme service lubes, toluene and other miscellaneous products are required. 100-octane gasoline is blended from isopentane, base stock, and alkylate. Isopentane is fractionated from natural or refinery gasoline; but since only limited quantities of base stock can be made in this way, catalytic cracking is rapidly becoming the major source of base stock. Alkylate, the most important component, is synthesized from isobutane and an olefin. Extraordinary demands are forcing the full utilization of all present sources and the development of new supplies of feed stocks. Fortunately, the United States finds itself with well-developed processes already available, and this is true of the manufacture of lubricating oil as well. Toluene is now being produced by new methods from special cuts fractionated from selected crudes or from catalytically processed naphthas. Designers of refinery equipment are modifying past practices to conserve every bit of material possible.

Flame fusion growth of strontium titanate crystals was undertaken to obtain large transparent crystals on which physical data could be gathered. The fact that strontium titanate is a cubic crystal and probably has a high index of refraction indicated that it might be useful in optics. No large boules* of strontium titanate had been synthesized previously, and none have been found as natural occurrences. The flame fusion process, invented by Verneuil in 1904, was first applied to grow large crystals of ruby and has since been used extensively to grow crystals of corundum and spinel on a commercial scale. Only during the past nine years has this technique been applied to the growth of large single crystals of other high melting compounds such as rutile, mullite and ferrites.

THE problem of establishing practical techniques for evaluating natural corundum ores arose from the desire to improve the existing purchase specifications for crystal corundum procured by the Federal Government for stockpiling. Such purchase specifications had been developed for a large number of products, including minerals and ores considered to be critical and strategic because of the country's dependence on foreign sources of supply. It will be apparent to anyone considering the subject of purchase specifications that the determination of whether or not a submittal meets the specifications is a prime consideration. Consequently satisfactory specifications for minerals should not only incorporate physical, chemical, and mineralogical requirements that are practical but should also establish the means by which both buyer and seller can be assured that materials meet stated requirements.

INTRODUCTION The principal applications of the flocculation process in the coal industry lie in the area of waste water treatment. Consequently, the concern is more with the behavior of the associated minerals, clays for example, than with the coal itself. At the same time, however, the presence of even small amounts of fine coal can significantly influence the performance of the flocculation operation. Coal preparation waste water treatment is a substantial problem involving over 200 billion gallons of water annually. There can be no doubt that these quantities will continue to increase as coal production increases and environmental considerations dictate the increased use of closed circuit systems and tighter control of effluent quality. Furthermore, we can expect to find a continued increase in the amount of fines generated in the coal mining and processing operations. Modern mining techniques tend to yield a finer raw coal with a higher ash content. The greater emphasis on fine coal cleaning for improved sulfur and ash removal and increased coal recovery will also lead to greater demands being placed upon the wastewater treatment system. The costs of "blackwater" treatment have been shown to vary widely from plant to plant (1). Part of this variation can be attributed to differences in the coal being mined and the plant flowsheet but there are no doubt significant contributions from the improper design and operation of treatment facilities.

IN the summer and fall of 1875, the author was present during a short smelting campaign at the Hall Valley works, and having had occasion to make a number of chemical analyses of the ores, fuel, and fluxes, deems that the results of the same, and also an account of the smelting operations, may be found of interest to members of the Institute. The mines and reduction works of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company (limited) are situated at Hall Valley, Park County, Colorado. The smelting works are located about half way from the mouth to the head of the above-named valley, and the mines high up on the mountains, near its head. The three principal mines of the company are the Whale, Leftwick, and Cold¬spring. They are all on different veins, running parallel to one another, with a general trend from southwest and northeast. Much valuable scientific research has been performed in recent years on the subject of phase behavior of hydrocarbons. ? 1-11 Engineers employed in petroleum production are interesting themselves in this work as well as in methods of applying the fundamental data available to the solution of their various problems. Recently a number of papers have been published in which applica-tions of phase behavior have been made to specific cases pertaining to critical phenomena.)12-16 Little effort, however, has been made in the literature to show the relation between changes occurring in the critical region and the more common phase behavior, therefore it is believed that a presentation of the fundamentals of phase behavior with reference to hydrocarbons is timely. Study of phase behavior is not new. In the metallurgical field, knowledge of heterogeneous equilibria has advanced tremendously, particularly with reference to solid-solid and solid-liquid behavior. Much is known about vapor-liquid equilibria too, but few engineers are familiar with this subject. ?

Site-specific blast vibration prediction can be more accurate than using a universal prediction equation. Vibrations from 37 blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly, inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations predicted from US Bureau of Mines (USBM) equations. Vibration restrictions based on USBM studies could then be too conservative or too lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases, energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

It is generally admitted that a god, practical and commercial set of specifications for the use of the many purchasers of cast-iron does not exist. A few good sets are in the hands of large buyers, but even these are very different, contradictory, and not intended to cover a wide range of product. Furthermore, most of them have been prepared to cover but one branch of the industry. It is strange that purchasers of cast-iron have not looked into this question long ago and demanded good, uniform cast-irou. Probably cast-iron has been discarded from many uses because of its failure in a few instances, even though the failure was due to ignorance of the quality of the iron, or perhaps to abnormally bad iron. Some foundrymen seem to consider all gray iron from a given foundry as uniform, especially if they know that it has been made from certain well-known brands of pig. Silica sand deposits are usually contaminated with various heavy minerals which must be removed to make the silica useful for flat-glass production. Research was undertaken to develop a better procedure for producing flat-glass-grade silica. Batch tests revealed that anionic detergent-type reagents had considerable promise. Pilot plant tests were run to compare the effectiveness of anionic detergent-type reagents with petroleum sulfonate in the removal of heavy minerals from a potential glass sand. Another slightly modified commercial procedure also was evaluated for comparison. In the pilot plant trials, utilization of the anionic detergent potation reagents did not produce quite as good results as petroleum sulfonate. It is likely that flat glass-grade sand could be produced with the anionic detergent reagents if more extensive pilot plant tests were conducted.

Price, production and drilling operations exceeded any year since 1930. A top price for crude of $2.55 was maintained from May 1 to November 6 and increased activity about coincides with that period. The average crude price for the year was: Bradford, $2.46; Kane-Butler, $2.34; Southwest Pennsylvania, $2.13. Production for the year exceeded 15 million barrels, an increase of about 2 million barrels over 1933. That this increase was more than justified by market demand is indicated by a reduction of 892,000 bbl. in stocks for the year. Two classes of data appear on Table 1, which are differentiated by footnote references. Where possible the .figures were obtained from individuals and companies that, from long acquaintance and varied contacts, are most capable of supplying an estimate where an estimate is necessary. The remaining data represent a rather careful compilation from all available published records (see p. 378). Drilling operations and production as summarized by the Oil City Derrick are as shown on Table 2.

Since many of the easily mined, continuous, thick coal seams in the Appalachian Region have been exhausted, new exploration and mining is being directed toward less continuous seams that are under more cover and are more difficult to mine. The direct results of this are that more money and time and more expertise and data are needed to plan and open new coal mines today. It is also becoming apparent that the old methods of assimilating and preparing information needed for mine planning are inadequate to meet the needs of today's modern mining engineer, especially in the areas of data gathering, storage, retrieval, preparation, and interpretation. The system described here allows assimilation of old and new core data in a relatively quick, accurate, and efficient manner. The system is a set of computer assisted procedures consisting of the following four basic steps: 1) raw data collection, computer input, storage, and graphic preparation, 2) geologic profile correlation and establishment of seam continuity, 3) computerized data posting of important seam parameters, 4) geologic and planimetric analysis for mine planning.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic industries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. The United States produces about 40 per cent of the world's fluorspar, of which about 90 per cent comes from the Illinois and Kentucky deposits along the Ohio River.2 Further detailed information on the fluorspar industry in the United States is given by Hatmaker and Davis.28 Fluorspar is marketed according to the following relative quantities and specifications : [ ] The concentration of the coarser sizes presents relatively little difficulty, good recoveries being obtained with jigs and tables.
