A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

Abstract-A borehole sonde wing a 252Cf neutron source and a Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector was field tested in a coal bed in Belmont County, Ohio, to ascertain whether such a device could be useful as a coal-exploration tool. As the sonde was lowered into the borehole, successive spectra were accumulated over short time intervals. The intensities of the capture gamma rays from hydrogen and of decay gamma rays from aluminum were determined simultaneously in each spectrum. A log of the intensities versus depth shows the depth and thickness of the coal bed.

For several years, ground support at the Pitch uranium mine has been a serious headache to the management. The "moving" ground raised havoc with standard timber sets as well as steel sets. The Bunker Hill mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining district at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of Pb-Ag-Zn ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones and now covers an area approximately 1 mi long by 0.5 mi wide. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Ore production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tpd. A 2-mi adit, the Kellogg tunnel, at the 2500 elevation provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft. 50º-inclined shaft extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for main line track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical ft apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine.

This is an era of "expansion;" and, conformably with the change in commercial conditions, the function of the mining engineer, as well as that of his confréres in many other professions, has also expanded. From the position of an engineer, limited to the determination of technical questions, the engineer of to-day has come to assume an economic importance in those branches of industry dependent upon engineering skill for their development. He is indeed an engineer of limited usefulness who does not go further professionally than to submit a purely technical report on subjects presented for his consideration. While he has the same responsibility as formerly in the solution of the technical problems involved, he is further expected to supplement his report with advice on the financial and commercial aspects of these problems. For the great majority of problems presented to the engineer ultimately involve the determination of the pecuniary relations of the propositions under consideration. The great corporation lawyer no longer earns his fee by merely submitting his opinion as to the legal issues involved in law-suits affecting the corporation; he now assumes charge of the entire legal work, including both the organization of the corporation and the maintenance of its legal status thereafter. Nanafalia aged bauxitic kaolins which straddle the Chattahoochee River in a NE-SW trending line anchored by Eufaula, Ala., and Andersonville, Ga., apparently derive from the same Piedmont source. A genetic interpretation is offered which describes the Nanafalia as a shoreline deposit in which the blanket elastics of the Andersonville area represent an ancient freshwater swamp and the lenticular Eufaula bauxites represent meander fills in an ancient tidal flat or barrier island. Mining operations in both areas are described and economic forecasts are presented.

In view of the increasingly widespread deterioration of concrete structures as the result of the interaction of the alkalies sodium and potassium released by hydration of portland cement and susceptible rocks and minerals in aggregates, it is believed that a paper summarizing the geographic distribution of these aggregates will be of interest to producers and users of concrete, concrete products, and concrete-making materials.

As a result of the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), now the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) initiated the draft of new federal regulations to deal with the mine waste impoundment and refuse pile problems. Public hearings were held and finally promulgated in October, 1976. As stated in 30 Code of Federal Regulations 77.214-216, the complete engineering design plan which is mandated by the regulations has to be approved by a coal mine health and safety district manager. During the past 18 months MSHA has gained considerable experience through the submission, review, and approval process. This report indicates the procedures, general design criteria and inspection requirements for submission of engineering plans to be approved. In particular, problem areas encountered most frequently by both operators and MSHA will be discussed. Only through diligent efforts by the operators, consultants and government, can we hope to accomplish the common goal to improve the safety of operations.

HIGH-TEMPERATURE thermometry,, as treated in this paper, deals with the measurement of temperature in the range 100° to 550° C. The lower limit corresponds to the temperature of boiling water at normal atmospheric pressure, the upper limit is approximately the highest temperature to which mercury in a glass thermometer may be safely subjected.1 In this range., the domains of pyrometry and thermometry overlap somewhat, for high-temperature resistance thermometers and thermocouples generally classed as pyrometers are often used below 550° C. Under the above title it is desired to bring to the attention of assayers a short-cut method which has been perfected by Mr. A. S. Warren, of Buffalo, and the writer; has been used several years at three " Lake copper " refineries in occasional alternation with the regular " combination," or a wet and fire," assay; and has proved more rapid, and rather more accurate than the latter on all refined copper—namely, the direct cupellation of the silver chloride (+gold) precipitate, without scorification. McDermitt mine is located southwest of McDermitt, Nev., ½ mile north of the old Cordero mine. Geologic structure of the district is that of a Miocene age collapse-type caldera in a region of Basin and Range normal faulting. The McDermitt ore body possess a tabular, gently dipping configuration within 150 ft of the surface over an area 2200 x 2500 ft. Indicated ore reserves are 3 million tons at 10 lb Hg per ton. The ore zone averages 20 ft in thickness and consists of cinnabar (HgS) and corderoite (Hg3S2Cl2) deposited parallel to bedding in argillized Miocene age tuffaceous lacustrine sediments. The ore body is localized above a silicious sinter-silicified lake-bed breccia. This "opalite" breccia unit possesses a gently dipping, apronlike configuration, striking northeast, parallel the trend of the Cordero deposit, and thinning to the north and northwest.

Successful miniplant and laboratory testwork has indicated that high purity selenium can be produced from copper refinery slimes. The recovery technique fits into existing unit operations, and the selenium recovery in the new process was close to 99%. This recovery virtually eliminated any selenium being processed through the smelting stage. In addition, miniplant tests conducted at Inco Metals Co.'s J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory in Mississauga, Ontario, have demonstrated the reliability of the process with respect to extractions, product quality, filtration characteristics, and effluent disposal. Inco's copper refinery at Copper Cliff, Ontario, produces about 500 t/d of copper with the anode slimes fall typically averaging 0.5% of the throughput. Investigations relating to the treatment of slimes within Inco's R&D have been conducted on several occasions since 1959, when the available alternatives such as acid or alkaline pressure leaching, aqueous or high temperature chlorination, roasting, smelting, etc., were considered. Interest in slimes processing was revived recently to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards and to replace equipment of a relatively old plant.

Changes in SO2 emission standards will not only influence the cost of supplying energy demands from coal, but also the competitive position of various production regions and the method of mining (surface vs. underground). A multiperiod interregional competition model was utilized to evaluate the interactions between mining capacity, new mine development, coal reserves, mining, processing and transportation costs and equipment availability and SO2 emission standards. The empirical results indicate that not only will costs increase dramatically, but production in eastern as well as western regions that have low sulfur reserves will also increase as sulfur standards become increasingly more strict. Implications of the adjustments in the location of coal mining activity for the processing, transportation, and capital goods markets are also presented.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civiliza-tion as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the Fig. 1.-KAOLIN PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS. commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported.

The following general survey of the character and present condition of the silver-mines of Mexico, though not offered as a detailed treatise, has been prepared with care, is believed to be generally up-to-date, and is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers. For several centuries Mexico has ranked first anlong the silver-producing countries. It is now second as a copper-producer, and seventh as a gold-producer, with a fast-increasing output every year. The total amount of capital invested in its mining- and smelting-works exceeds $250,000,000, while the value of the yearly metallic production is $160,000,000. There are more than 20,000 recorded mining properties. The silver-mines of Mexico represent deposits of three principal classes: (1) veins and stock-works in eruptive rocks; (2) fissure-veins crossing the crystalline schists, granite, diorite, etc.; and (3) veins and replacement-deposits in limestone. Grinding in steel milk adversely affects the flotation removal of pyrrhotite from magnetite ores. To elucidate the effect of grinding media on the floatability of pyrrhotite, rest potential and galmic current measurements were made on electrode combinations of pyrrhotite-mild steel and pvhotite- stainless steel. Galvanic contact of pyrrhotite with mild steel increased the rate of surface reactions on pyrrhotite in air-exposed and oxygenated solutions. It was postulated that the formation of an iron hydroxide coating on the pyrrhotite adversely affected its floatability. Its formation was minimal when pyrrhotite was contacted with stainless steel. Fine magnetite particles cawed slime coating on pyrrhotite surfaces by magnetic interaction and impaired the flotation of pyrrhotite.
