Internal-friction measurements were made during isothermal aging treatments of 18 pct Ni maraging-steel wires between 420° and 612°C. A sharp initial drop in the internal-friction level was interpreted in terms of a rapid dislocation recovery reaction. The rate of the recovery was found to be independent of temperature. Truncation of the recovery reaction was apparent in those systems that exhibited the rapid age-hardening characteristics of the maraging steels. It is proposed that this initial hardening response is the result of a low activation energy preprecipitation reaction involving molybdenum. A gradual rise in the internal-friction level at longer aging times was associated with the precipitation of a molybdenum-containing precipitate. CONSIDERABLE research effort has recently been devoted to the mechanisms responsible for the high strength and toughness of 18 pct Ni maraging steels. These bcc martensitic alloys are found to harden during aging at temperatures between 400° and 600°C. The aging response is very rapid with more than half the total hardness increase occurring within the first few minutes of aging, Fig. 1. Precipitate particles have been observed in the later stages of aging by a number of investigators.'-' While the identity of the precipitates remains the subject of some controversy, one or more of the intermetallic compounds, Ni3Mo, Ni3Ti, and Fe2Mo, are almost certainly involved. Heterogeneous nucleation of precipitates at dislocations has been noted8 and cobalt is believed to enhance the formation of fine, homogeneously distributed particles by lowering the solubility of the alloying elements in the martensitic matrix.3,7 Transmission electron microscopy studies of the initial hardening behavior have not been fruitful. Strengthening mechanisms based on atomic ordering have not been generally supported by X-ray and neutron-diffraction experiments.9 In the present investigation, the aging reaction was studied using isothermal-aging internal-friction measurements. The marked sensitivity of internal friction to short-range diffusion and precipitation processes has provided a convenient tool for the elucidation of the strengthening mechanisms operative in the maraging steels. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An upright torsion pendulum was used to measure the internal friction of several maraging steels during isothermal aging. The pendulum was placed in an atmosphere of helium at a pressure slightly less than atmospheric. To permit measurement of internal friction during the first minutes of aging, the specimens were rapidly heated by passing a current through them in a manner similar to that described by Ang and Wert.10 Thermal gradients in the specimen were largely eliminated by using specially designed specimen grips11 which produced temperature variations of less than 1 pct over 90 pct of the specimen length and less than 3 pct over the entire length at aging temperatures up to 620°C. A proportioning strip-chart program controller was employed to maintain constant specimen temperature during treatments of up to 36 hr duration. A number of vacuum-melted laboratory heats having compositions near that of a typical commercial 18Ni-7Co-5Mo-0.4Ti alloy were investigated. SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. In 1884, the first power-operated anthracite coal breaker was erected by Gideon Bart at his colliery at Wolf Creek near Minersville, Pa. This plant utilized a system of rolls for breaking the coal and revolving screens for sizing. The plant was driven by a steam engine. It could handle coal at the rate of 200 tons a day. By 1860, revolving screens were in wide use in the Pennsylvania anthracite field. Shaking screens were introduced in the Pennsylvania anthracite region in the 90's and they rapidly displaced the lower-capacity revolving screens.

THE Waelz process produces oxides of volatilizable metals from ores, metalliferous products and residues. The process was originally used for recovering zinc and lead, where tailings and residues containing those metals had accumulated at mines or smelters, but it is applicable for obtaining tin, arsenic or other volatilizable metals. It is useful when other methods of obtaining the metals from the ores or residues are too difficult or expensive or show too low a recovery. The Waelz process was developed in 1923 for the treatment of large calamine dumps in Upper-Silesia, which showed zinc contents of 8 to 10 per cent. and lead contents up to 3 per cent. The rapid development of the process, from the first trials up to the plants now working or in course of erection, is shown in Fig. 1. -The first industrial Waelz plant was started in 1925. As the coating formed affects the corrosion rate, duplicate samples of eight non-ferrous alloys were placed in flowing mine water. The alloys tested were as-cast or as-rolled and machined or polished. The paper describes the tests and gives the corrosion losses and the appearance of the samples at the end of the test. AN IMPORTANT factor affecting the rate and nature of corrosion of metals and alloys is the film, or coating, formed on the surface; and this may accelerate or retard corrosive action once started. The formation of films and coatings is intimately associated with the chemical composition and physical constitution of both the metal and the corroding medium. A film or coating may be either the corrosion product resulting from oxidation; that is, an oxide or salt, or a deposition of suspended matter from the corroding media upon the surface of the metal, or a mixture of both. The coating may adhere tightly or loosely to the surface of the corroded metal. In short, a film or coating is the reaction product of the corroding medium and the metal, which adheres to the surface of the metal and with which may be intermingled material from the attacking media not concerned in the chemical reactions. As the, terms film and coating are used by different writers for very different things, distinction is made between the two, by the present writers, on the basis of thickness. Thus, a film is defined as a corrosion product or deposition, on the surface of a corroded metal, that is of such thickness that it cannot be measured by the metallurgical microscope. A coating, on the other hand, is of such thickness that it can be measured. If the resolving power of the 2 mm. (equivalent focal length) apochromatic oil immersion objective (N.A. 1.4) is taken as the limit of the microscope, the limiting resolution is two lines that are 0.0002-0.0004 mm. apart. It is thus possible to measure coatings that are greater than 0.0002-0.0004 mm. thick. This thickness is equivalent to 200,000-

Introduction and Importance of the Industry Sand, as described in this chapter, is a crude product used for ballast on railroads and highways, and as the fine aggregate in concrete, mortar, plaster and in asphalt paving materials. The sand used in glass, as a molding sand, and as a source of silica is described in Chapter 43. Sand and gravel together constitute the mineral raw materials of largest volume produced from the earth. In 1958, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines,21 680,080,000 tons of sand and gravel (including industrial sand) were produced in the United States. The nearest competitor was crushed rock of which 532,818,000 tons were produced. Coal, both bituminous and anthracite accounted for only 431,616,689 tons in the same year. In dollar value, sand and gravel were exceeded only by cement, crushed rock and fuels. Hence it is a major unit of the mineral-producing industry. As an example, one plant in California operates around the clock at an average rate of 1,500 tons per hour, and at peak intervals has shipped over 4,000 tons per hour, all by trucks. Nevertheless, it is controlled by one man through a panel of push buttons that control the crushing, screening, washing, grading, stock piling, and reclaiming of the products. Because sand and gravel are low-valued commodities, but are used in every construction undertaking in every city, village, farm, dam and highway, they are produced in almost every county in the United States and southern Canada, by thousands of individual operators, very few of whom operate in more than one community. Many operations, particularly those established to supply the needs of major dams that are under construction, or of major segments of new highways, are temporary in nature, and the equipment installed is more or less portable. Because of the bulky nature of sand and gravel, there is very little interstate movement, and almost no exports or imports, except a little movement back and forth across the border of the United States and Canada. First, the material needs definition. Definitions Sand and gravel have been defined as continuously graded unconsolidated materials that appear in the earth's surface as a result of the natural disintegration of rocks. Both normally appear together, but in a wide variety of sizes, types and range of size classification. The American Society for Testing Materials has tentatively revised its definition of "sand" as: granular material passing the 3/8-in. sieve and almost entirely passing the No. 4 (4760-micron) sieve and predominantly retained on the No. 200 (74-micron) sieve, and resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of completely friable sandstone (ASTM Designation C 58-55T). The Society's tentative revision of its definition of "gravel" is: granular material predominantly retained on the No. 4 (4760-micron) sieve and resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of weakly bound conglomerate (ASTM 125-55T). Single crystals of Ta-Re alloys have been deformed in tension and compression as a function of solute concentration and temperature. The temperature dependence of the yield stress is decreased by alloying. At low temperatures there is a minimum in the yield stress (at about 2 at. pct) as a function of concentration. Three-stage hardening was not observed in the alloys. Linear hardening rates, where observed, were characteristic of stage II in pure tantalum. At low temperatures and high concentrations, work softening was often prominent at high strains. Electron microscopy revealed that dislocations are mostly of screw orientation, although heavily jogged and cusped, and often occurring in dipole pairs. The alloys become more prone to cleavage with increasing rhenium content, due mostly to an increasing yield stress rather than a change in cleavage strength. Alloying apparently decreases the Peierls stress of bcc metals at low temperatures by facilitating kink nucleation at solule atoms on screw dislocations. Higher solute concentrations further increase the yield stress. Quantitative calculations and comparisons with other bcc alloy systems are made to show that the predominant hardening mechanism is due to the interaction of dislocations with misfitting solute atoms close to their slip planes. The interaction is so localized that the core dilatation of dislocations could be important. CONSIDERABLE interest has arisen in recent years concerning the mechanical properties of unalloyed bcc metal single crystals.'-7 These and similar studies on polycrystalline materials have resulted in a considerable understanding of the macroscopic yielding characteristics8, 9 and the process of work hardening.'' This latter advance is due in a large part to the increased use of transmission electron microscopy in P I RAFFO junior Membar AlMF is Metallyureist Iewis such studies and the general observance of three stages of work hardening in the shear stress-shear strain curves. The properties of substitutional alloy single crystals of bcc metals have not been determined in as much detail as in the pure metals. Insufficient systematic studies have been made on the effect of alloying on the magnitude and temperature dependence of the yield stress or the stress-strain curves. The alloy systems which have been studied to some extent have been Ta-W,11, 12 Ta-Mo," Ta-Nb,12'14 Mo-Re,15 W-Re,16 and alloys of iron with nickel,17 platinum,17 vanadium,18 and aluminum.18 A large body of data exists on Fe-Si alloys, but these have mainly been a result of the experimental convenience of using this material in place of unalloyed iron, rather than a comprehensive study of the mechanical properties of the alloy system per se. The present authors have previously reported additional data on the properties of Ta-Re, Ta-W, and Ta-Mo alloy single crystals.1g Some of the data on Ta-Re alloys will be described later in this paper. Briefly, single crystals of Ta-Re (1.2 to 10.6 pct), Ta-W (6.2 and 10.2 pct), and Ta-Mo (2.9 and 9.0 pct) were grown by the floating zone method in vacuum. Compression tests were performed in the temperature range 77" to 623°K. Slip was found to occur in Ta-Re alloys at 77' and 298°K on the (~ll)[lil] system and slip lines were coarser and straighter than in unalloyed tantalum. No three-stage hardening was observed in any of the alloy systems and the curves were nearly parabolic. At temperatures above 175°K the yield stress* increased monotonically with in- creasing composition while at 77" and 175°K the yield stress initially passed through a minimum after which it began to increase again for concentrations greater than about 2 pct Re. Similar minima were observed in Ta-Mo alloys and to a lesser extent in Ta-W alloys. The minimum was interpreted as being a result of a

The various materials utilized in the construction of integrated circuits, and the resultant materials interfaces, are discussed with emphasis on a materials system that is compatible with all types of integrated circuits and minimizes the number of different interfaces. Problems with interfaces may originate in the silicon, on its surface, and between other materials within the integrated-circuit package independent of the silicon. ThE difference between integrated-circuit theory and practice may generally be spelled out in terms of the difficulties in fabricating a desired structure. There are, of course, problems in forming the requisite materials, of the necessary composition and geometry, where needed. A distinct class of problem, however, is associated with interfaces— generally between different materials, but occasionally between regions of the same material. We require that each interfacial system perform its proper electrical, mechanical, and thermal function, and do so in an unchanging manner with time under the most severe operating conditions. In a practical sense, we deal in nonideal systems, such that it is generally not possible to form an interface exactly the way it was intended, even if we allow for a knowledge of the practical limitations of the fabrication system. Another way of looking at this situation is to realize that, when we form a group of interfaces under apparently the same experimental conditions, there are often differences of important consequence between them. Very high-magnification pictures, such as are obtained by an electron microscope, reveal fine structure that often differs over the area of a given sample, as well as from sample to sample. Low-magnification pictures look better, but don't eliminate the problem. The trend towards integrated circuits, and away from circuits fabricated utilizing separate components, is very strong in many areas of electronics. A typical silicon monolithic integrated circuit, still in place in the wafer on which it was fabricated, is shown in Fig. 1. The increased reliability which is being experienced through the use of integrated circuits can, to a large extent, be credited to the reduced complexity of the interface system that is present in the electronic system. A glance at Fig. 1, however, with all of its epitaxial and diffused p-n junctions, and interconnect system, shows that interfaces have been far from eliminated. Fig. 2, depicting a schematic cross-sectional view of a (partial) typical integrated circuit, illustrates in detail the numerous interfaces that occur in this type of structure. Besides the individual circuit elements, there are interfaces for isolation, and, Fig. 3, even a crossover requires a series of interfaces. What has been accomplished, however, irrespective of whether or not the total number of interfaces in the circuit is increased or decreased, is that the variety of interfaces is very much reduced. This is because there are fewer materials involved. Since the expense incurred in an R & D program to improve reliability is pretty much directly proportional to the variety of interfaces involved, it is economically advisable to work with integrated circuits for highest reliability. That is not to say that circuits built using standard components could not be made as reliable as integrated circuits, but that the expense involved because of the more complex over-all interface system would be much greater. Although electronic performance utilizing integrated circuits with all silicon elements (i.e., transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors) is adequate for many applications, there are numerous instances where thin-film passive elements must

During isothermal recrystallization, the rate of grain growth in dilute Fe-hlo alloys decreased rapidly with increasing Mo content, up to -0.04 at pct, and less rapidly therea-fter. Rate of growth also decreased sharply with time at constant temperature. The observed rates of boundary migration did not cor,espond to predictions of the Lucke-Detert theory. It is proposed that the growth of recrystallized grains is inhibited by clustering of solute atoms at inzperfections in the unrecrystallized matrix. It is now firmly etablished" that the rate of re-crystallization of cold-worked metals, i.e., the rate of growth of recrystallized grains into the deformed matrix, is greatly inhibited by the presence of alloying elements in solid solution. The effect is greatest with the first very small quantity of alloying elements, and additional increments cause much less pronounced retardation of growth. The early papers on this subject were reviewed in Ref. 6. The mechanism of retardation of growth is not clear; only one theory, due to Lucke and Detert? has been advanced. This assumes an elastic interaction between grain boundaries and solute atoms which tends to increase the concentration of the latter in the grain boundaries. Except at very low solute concentrations or at high temperatures, the mobility of the boundary is assumed to be controlled by the rate of diffusion of the accompanying solute atoms. Abrahamson and Blakeney2 have noted a correlation between "recrystallization temperature of binary alloys of iron and the number of d-shell electrons in the solute atoms. There is need for considerably more experimental data on the effect of solute elements on the rate of migration of grain boundaries into the deformed matrix, to provide the basis for an understanding of the annealing process in metallic solid solutions. Only a start has been made in this direction. To avoid unnecessary complications, alloys in which precipitation does not occur should be used, but to produce the maximum effects it is desirable to select alloys with a large difference between the sizes of the atoms of the solvent and solute. For these reasons, alloys of iron and molybdenum sen for this study. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES A 30-lb. ingot of iron and four similar ingots of Fe-Mo alloys were vacuum melted in magnesia crucibles and poured into cast-iron molds. The molybdenum contents were planned according to the results of Abrahamson and Blakeney2 sothattwoalloyswould fall in the region of rapid change of recrystallization kinetics with change in composition (0.006 to 0.015 and 0.030 to 0.045 at. pct Mo) and two alloys would fall in the region of gradual change (0.18 to 0.24 and

The Spraberry Trend Field of West Texas was discovered in January, 1949. Drilling of 2.234 wells and production of some 45 million bbl of oil by January, 1953, indicated this to be an important field which will ultimately cover more than 400,000 acres. In addition to being the world's largest field in areal extent, the Spraberry has presented many problems in well completion and operation and has demonstrated unique reservoir performance characteristics. The pay section consists primarily of a few fine grained sandstone or siltstone members in a thousand-ft thick section of shale, limestone. and siltstone. Since porosity averages only 10 per cent and nearly all permeabilities are less than 1 md, conventional core analysis does not delineate the "pay" section. Mercury injection was used as a capillary pressure test adaptable to rapid routine use to select those intervals having low enough connate water saturation to contain commercially significant oil saturation. In the central area of the field this "pay" amounts to 16 ft of Upper Spraberry and 15 ft of Lower Spraberry sands. An interconnected system of vertical fractures, observed in cores, provides the flow channels for oil to drain into the wells hut most of the oil is stored in the matrix since the void volume of fractures is estimated to be less than 1 per cent of that in the sand. Initial potentials of wells range up to 1.000 B/D after fracture treatment which should be compared with estimated capacity of 5 to 10 B/D if oil had to flow into the wells through the sand itself. Without exception initial pressures of later drilled wells were significantly lower than initial pressures of earlier drilled nearby wells in a large area some 6 miles long. This means the earlier drilled wells had drained fluids from areas much greater than their 40-acre proration units. Since most of this performance occurred while the reservoir pressure was above the. saturation pressure it was analyzed by the compressible fluid flow theory. This analysis gave calculated initial presrilres which agreed within 30 psi of measured pressures of 60 per cent of wells in the area using 16-md permeabilitv corresponding to a fracture system substantially that indicated by cores and using combined compressibility of rock and its contained oil and water corresponding to the core analysis data. The most important feature of this analysis was the very close agreement between effective compressibility of the rock and its contained oil and water from the field performance and that from the core tests, because it meant there are no "islands" of low permeability reservoir rock left untapped in the inter-well area and thus no additional wells are necessary to insure that at least one well penetrates each "reservoir." Twenty-five of forty-four 40-acre spaced wells on three contiguous sections were wed in a four-month inteference test. Six shut-in well. were tested monthly for oil production. productivity index. gas-oil ratio and pressure buildup, and seven shut-in wells were tested for decline in reservoir pressure. Tests on 12 regularly producing wells gave comparative data for interpretation of shut-in test wells. Reduction in reservoir pressure, decline in productivity index. and increase in gas-oil ratio were found to be substantially the same in the shut-in test wells as those in the comparative regularly producing wells, meaning that the producing wells were depleting the

Structural changes in Be-Cu, Be-Ni. Be - Ag, and Be-Fc alloys pressurized in a solid medium were invesligated by resistivity measurements , X-ray diffrac lion in situ and metallogvaphic examination. Some limited tests in liquid medium were also conducted. Good correlation was oblained between diauges of slope of relative resistance us pressure and changes in diffraction pattern. Metallographic examination rez:ealed that the copper, silver, and nickel alloys lwiu heauily due to the applicalion of pressure at room temperature. Using polarized light technique {1012}, {1011}, and possible {1010} twinning planes were identified. At eleuated temperature twinning was moslly confined to the {1012} planes. Although twin-ning could be promoted by application of hydroslutic pvessure (liquid medium), it was strongly enhanced by the pvesence of a nonhydvostatic shear component due to pressurizalion in a solid medium. It was further obserced that a decrease in grain size inlnibiled twinnitzg activily. A great deal of effort has been expended in recent years to render beryllium useful for structural applications. Efforts were concentrated towards a possible phase change and to promoting other than basal deformation modes. Quenching experiments to obtain the high-temperature bcc phase have failed,' nor were alloying additions successful in improving ductility of the brittle hcp phase.2 Herman et a1.3 have reported a new {1011} twinning mode in a Be-4.4 wt pct Cu alloy oriented for a C axis compression sustaining loads to 440,000 psi. A new approach using high-pressure techniques was undertaken at Curtiss-Wright, Wright Aeronautical Division Laboratories. Marder4 reported a 25 pct decrease in relative resistance of commercially pure beryllium at 92 kbar. He proposed that this discontinuity corresponded to the bcc phase found at high temperature; however, X-ray diffraction in silu did not confirm a phase transition.5 contre6 has recently shown that the bcc transition in pure beryllium is lowered to 800°C at 80 kbar accompanied by a 50 pct increase in relative resistance. The purpose of this paper is to report on one phase of an investigation of the effects of high pressures and temperatures in beryllium alloys, namely, twinning behavior in Be-Ni, Be-Cu, Be-Fe, and Be-Ag alloys pressurized to nearly 100 kbar and temperatures up to 200°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Material was obtained from Nuclear Metals, Inc., in the form of a 1.5-mm-diam wire extruded in stainless-steel cladding at 1600° F. Nominal composition of the alloys is listed in Table I, and the major impurities are are given in Table 11. Pressures to 100 kbar* were ob- tained using a National Bureau of Standards type 100/400 ton tetrahedral unit supplied by Barogenics, Inc. This type of apparatus contains a retaining sleeve with a conically tapered internal surface and four pressure-intensifying anvil assemblies with tungsten carbide tips. LIQUID-OXYGEN explosives commonly consist of a carbonaceous absorbent enclosed in a canvas wrapper and soaked with a liquid con-taining more than 90 mol per cent of oxygen. Investigation of these explosives in this country was initiated in 1917 by George S. Rice, then Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau of Mines. The early development is summarized in two papers.1,2 Their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages were considered in a recent bulletin of the Bureau of Mines.3 Other publications of this Bureau4,5 treat the technology of these explosives and contain adequate references to pertinent literature. These investigations defined the properties of liquid-oxygen explosives and improved them greatly; however, an outstanding disadvantage is their high inflammability, a property of critical practical importance. These explosives as hitherto prepared are easily inflamed; the combustion resulting from an accidental ignition is particularly dangerous because of the ease with which it passes into detonation. For this reason the Bureau of Mines undertook a cooperative investigation, which has resulted in the development of fire-retardant treatment for the minimiza-tion or elimination of this hazard without materially impairing the explosive properties, including the ease of detonation. This presentation will offer a general description of the investigation and the outstanding results. Further phases will appear in subsequent short papers, and the entire investigation including the results of detailed experiments will be available in a forthcoming bulletin of the Bureau of Mines (Bull. 429). The effects produced by fire-retardant treatments of the carbonaceous absorbent and of the canvas wrappers were investigated separately, and the efficacy of combinations of these treatments with particular reference to the possibility of inflammation and to the development of detonation from inflammation was studied. THE recent increase in anode copper production at the Noranda smelter placed an additional load on the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The consequent increase in the amount of anode slimes led to a careful consideration of the various methods of slimes treatment. A critical review of these methods is presented here in the belief that it would be of interest to copper refiners. No such review has yet been published, although a number of individual flowsheets have been described. To make the information of greater value, a questionnaire was sent to all copper refineries. While the overall response to the questionnaire was not entirely satisfactory, the foreign refiners gave much detail in their answers and expressed willingness to cooperate further if needed. Although the data below do not cover all refineries, it is thought that examples of all flowsheets currently in use are included. A comparison of these flowsheets should prove of interest. The paper is divided into two parts. One part deals with a discussion of all known methods of treating and recovering the various components of the slimes. The second describes the processes now in use at various copper refineries for the treatment of raw slimes up to the production of Doré bullion. A brief description of the two main electrolytic methods of parting Doré bullion is appended. Since the first commercial application of electrolytic refining of copper by J. B. Elkington in 1865, the treatment of anode mud or slimes has undergone many changes. The object of treating slimes has always been the recovery and separation of precious metals. With the passage of time, increasing attention has been paid to improvement in recovery and quality of byproducts, mainly selenium and tellurium. The original methods of treatment were crude, although relatively direct. For example," the slimes were fused on a dolomitic clay bed in a reverbera-tory furnace; the slag was removed and the resulting metal cupelled to silver and gold. In another process, the dried slimes were oxidized and scorified on the lead bath of a cupelling furnace. Later, these pyrometallurgical methods were modified by sulphuric acid leaching, followed by fusion with niter in a reverb eratory furnace. A preliminary oxidizing roast improved the leaching step. Straight hydro-metallurgy has not found practical application. No matter what method is employed, the result is Dorb metal—a silver-gold alloy, with or without the metals of the platinum group. Characteristics of the Slimes Anode slimes are made up of those components of the anodes which are not soluble in the electrolyte. They contain varying quantities of copper, silver, gold, sulphur, selenium, tellurium, lead, arsenic, antimony, nickel, iron, silica, etc. The color of raw slimes is grayish black and the particle size is —200 mesh. However, Baraboshkin and Gaev (Ref. 1, p. 37), describe light gray colored slimes from the electrolysis of secondary copper which are composed predominantly of sulphates and of basic salts. In anode furnace practice primary and secondary metals are not usually segregated and such slimes do not commonly occur. Copper in the slimes originates to a large extent in the cuprous oxide of the anodes and is therefore dependent on the oxygen content of the latter: Cu2O + H2SO4 + CuSO4 + H2O + Cu [I] Opinions have been expressed that some of the copper is formed by decomposition of cuprous to cupric sulphate Cu2SO4 ? CuSO4 + Cu PI The product of either reaction is very finely divided. Depending on the slimes composition, much of the copper is combined with sulphur, selenium, tellurium, etc. The balance of the copper is in the free metallic state.

Nearly 75 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank' standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American stand¬ard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

Creep tests were performed at 500°F on polished specimens of A1-3 pct Cu at stresses of 2000, 4000, and 6000 psi. The effects of the size and distnbution of the second phase were studied in connection with the mechanisms of deformation, especially grain boundary sliding. Although the amount of grain boundary sliding varied considerably for the different heat treatments, yestriction of grain boundary sliding is not due primarily to precipitate on the grain boundary. NUMEROUS prior investigations of grain boundary sliding, notably those of McLean, 1 Rachinger, 2 Rhines, Bond, and Kissel, 3 and Brunner and Grant,4 have established the importance of this phenomenon in the deformation of pure aluminum and its solid-solution alloys at elevated temperatures. An extension of this kind of study to the case of a simple two-phase structure is an important step towards understanding the deformation behavior of more complex alloys. A two-phase A1-3 pct Cu alloy was selected for this study. The creep behavior of alloys in this system has been studied by Sully and Hardy,5 by Underwood, Marsh, and Manning,' and by Pelloux, Chaudhuri, and Grant.7 In these studies, the prior heat treatments were such that some precipitation took place during the tests in most cases. Pelloux, Chaudhuri, and Grant7 studied the creep of A1-2 and 3 pct Cu alloys in the overaged condition. Their results indicated that the structure most effective in promoting high-temperature strength consisted of a fine, closely spaced grain precipitate and large, widely spaced particles on the grain boundary. The present work consists of quantitative meas- urements of grain boundary sliding during creep of an A1-3 pct CU alloy with four different precipitate distributions. The aims were to quantitatively define the role of the second phase on grain boundary sliding, and to obtain information regarding the mechanism of grain boundary sliding. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE A high-purity A1-3 pct Cu alloy, kindly supplied by Alcoa, was used in this investigation. The composition of the alloy in weight percent was as shown in Table I. This composition is such that A12Cu exists as a second phase at temperatures below 850°F. A homogeneous grain size of 0.6 to 0.8 mm was obtained by annealing the machined test bars for 5 min at 1000°F, furnace cooling to 930°F, and homogenizing for 5 hr. Following the recrystalli-zation and homogenizing anneal, four different heat treatments shown in Fig. 1 were utilized. The F7 and F5 treatments utilize a furnace cool to the aging temperature while Q7 and Q5 have a water quench from the homogenization temperature before aging. Figs. 2 to 5, and Table 11, show the size and shape of precipitate dispersions obtained with the above heat treatments. The heat treatments produce variations in the dispersion both in the grains and along the grain boundaries. Precipitate particles along the grain boundaries are rounded and large (about 1.5 p diameter) in the F5 and F7 structures (Figs. 3 and 5). The grain boundary precipitate was somewhat smaller (0.9 p diameter) in the Q7 structure and no grain boundary precipitate was detected in the Q5 structure using light microscopy. The pre-

Laboratory displacement tests were performed to study oil recovery elficiency by gravity drainage in fractured systems under miscible conditions. The porous media used were cylindrical Berea and Blue Jacket sandstone cores containing a number of well-defined, artificially formed, vertical and subvertical fractures. Butane and Soltrol 130 were the two miscible fluids used. The purpose of the study was to examine the influences of the displacement rate, fracture density, fracture orientation, fracture permeability, matrix permeability, crossflow, core length and connate water on the oil recovery. It was found that displacement rate, matrix permeability and the subvertical fractures affected oil recovery most. The critical flow rate, based on the matrix permeability, was found to be a significant factor in the process. For displacement rates below the critical flow rate, the oil recovery efficiency appeared to be unaffected by the density of the subvertical fractures. At the high displacement rates, the fracture density becomes important, with the recovery being the most efficient in the core having the greatest number of the subvertical fractures. The magnitude of the fracture permeability, the fracture orientation, the core length and the connate water have little effect on the oil recovery efficiency. INTRODUCTION Gravity drainage under miscible conditions from relatively thick reservoirs can be a very efficient recovery process, especially at low flow rates where the gravity forces are dominant and, consequently, the adverse viscous fingers associated with the unfavorable viscosity ratio are minimized or eliminated. Such a process might involve injection of an LPG or some solvent bank at the crest and then driving the bank with dry gas. For some favorable combination of reservoir temperature, pressure and oil composition, there may be no need to inject any solvent bank, since enrichment of the dry gas by the light ends of the crude creates an in-situ solvent bank. Slobod and Howlett2 have studied the effects of gravity segregation in vertical unconsolidated porous media under miscible conditions in the laboratory. The main variables in their study were the viscosity ratio, the density differences and the rate of flow. In this study, the objective was to find the influence of fractures on gravity drainage under miscible conditions. A greater number of related variables were also studied. LABORATORY STUDY CORE DESCRIPTION Displacement tests were performed mostly in cylindrical Berea sandstone cores. In a few cases in which a much lower matrix permeability was desired, Blue Jacket sandstone cores were used. The vertical fractures were formed by cutting the cores with a thin circular blade or by parting them along a bedding plane. The vertical fracture plane always contained the axis of the cylindrical core. The subvertical fractures, cut with a saw, were inclined 45' from the horizontal. The line of intersection between the planes of the vertical and subvertical fractures was parallel to the circular faces of the cores in all cases except one, as depicted by VF3HF-2 in Fig. 1. Fracture geometry of the other cores is also given in Fig. 1. Tables 1 and 2 give the physical properties of the solid and fractured cores, respectively. The suffixes and prefixes shown for each core have been used throughout the paper so that the reader may discern the fracture geometry from the core numbers.

Changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, X-ray line broadening, and dislocation arrangements (from transmission electron microscopy) have been mensured on copper specimens shock-loaded at 75 to 435 kbars. The stored energy in shock-loaded copper and changes in density and resistivity are larger than those after conventional deformation. A high density of twins makes an appreciable contribution to all the measured quantities. Dislocation densities rise to values of 1011 lines per sq cm at the highest pressure. The resistivity, density, and X-ray In a study of the effects of shock loading on copper, changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, hardness, lattice parameter, line broadening, and dislocation structure have been examined after subsequent annealing of specimens shocked to various pressures. This paper presents certain aspects of the data, taken by two groups, one at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the other at Northwestern University, and compares the changes in these properties, and what they indicate about the effects of shock deformation. measurements yield dislocation densities in substantial agreement at all pressures, after correcting for the effects due to the twins. At the higher pressures, electron microscopy yields dislocation densities that are lower by a factor of about 5 to 10. Dislocation densities from stored -energy measurements are high; this finding can be rationalized by the consideration that the deformation twin boundaries present are largely incoherent. There is no evidence for homogeneous dislocation nucleation during shock loading. Shock loading any metal or alloy, such as copper, causes a large increase in yield strength, with dimensional changes of the order of only a few percent."' Other properties have not been extensively studied, but this result clearly indicates the importance of examining the substructure. Previous studies of the substructure of conventionally deformed specimens have been made using electron microscopy,3-6 X-ray diffraction,7,8 and etch pitting.9,10 The dislocation density can reach values of about 10" per sq cm; and the dislocations are arranged in cells approximately 0.15 in size. The substructure varies widely, however, from point to point in the specimen. The substructure of explosively loaded copper consists of cells of about the same dimensions6,11 but their size is more uniform.6 Profuse twinning occurs12,13 and the twins are often too small to be detected optically.6,13 The boundaries outlining these twins appear to be incoherent.14 There is now ample evidence 13-15 that twinning is a strengthening mechanism in fcc metals but this is only part of the strengthening effect in shock-loaded copper.* From the twinning systems which operate in shock-loaded single crystals,13 and from changes in texture on shock loading,17 it has been shown that both the

IN a search for an improved conductor for use in field wire for the L. S. Army Signal Corps, an alloy of copper and silver was developed from which it was possible to obtain 29 B & S ga. strands with tensile strengths in excess of 160,000 psi combined with an electrical conductivity of over 70 pct IACS. Such a favorable combination of strength and electrical conductivity has not been reported previously in the rather extensive literature covering this subject. The properties obtained from various binary alloys of copper and silver, together with the method of fabrication of these alloys which has been developed to obtain the properties desired in fine wire strands, are discussed in this paper. LITERATURE The effect on the electrical conductivity of copper of the various elements in solid solution is shown in Fig I, taken from published data by J. O. Linde and others.' It will be noted that silver in solid solution depresses the electrical conductivity to a lesser extent than any other element for which data are given, and is followed rather closely by cadmium, and then by chromium. Zinc, which lies between cadmium and chromium, has so high a solid solubility in copper that the data for zinc are scarcely comparable to the data for the other two in the range covered. Not many data are available on the strain hardening of copper-rich Cu-Ag alloys. Corson2 reports a 3 pct Ag alloy properly cold worked and annealed to have 100,000 psi tensile strength and 90 pct IACS conductivity. On straight cold working, Hessenbruch3 reports 101.000 psi for a 5 pct Ag, 0.3 pct Be alloy, and 129,000 psi for a 30 pct Ag, 0.5 pct Be alloy. Here it would he expected that much of the strain hardening came from the silver content of the alloys. The copper-rich side of the Cu-Ag diagram, according to Stockdale,4 is shown in the upper part of Fig 2. The electrical conductivities for copper-silver alloys annealed at 750 and 350°C, taken from the work of Johansson and Linde,5 are shown in the lower part of Fig 2. The sloping line corresponds to the conductivity of solid solutions of silver in copper, and the horizontal offshoots correspond to the conductivity of the two-phase alloys in equilibrium at the two temperatures shown. The electrical conductivities are very high, even for the 750°C anneal. The potentiality for age hardening from supersaturated alpha copper solutions appears to be excellent from the solubility line, but Smith and Lindlief6 have shown that the response to age hardening of solution-annealed alpha alloys is not good. They found that the tensile strength of a 5 pct Ag alloy aged at various temperatures was not as great as in the quenched condition, even though, anomalously, the hardness increased from RB68 to RB78 by annealing for 4 hr at 400°C after a 750°C quench. This paper presents the depletion-performance correlations developed using data from PVT studies and well-completion tests of 27 rich gas-condensate and volatile-oil reservoir fluids. The PVT behavior for each fluid war determined experimentally in the laboratory, and the depletion performance of each fluid was then calculated. Well-completion test data consisting of reservoir pressure and temperature, initial total gas-oil ratio, and stock-tank oil gravity were used with the depletion-performance data to develop general performance correlations. Three correlations are presented. The first equation shows the empirical relation of gas in place per barrel of hydrocarbon pore space with reservoir pressure and temperature, and initial total gas-oil ratio. The second equation is the correlation of stock-tank oil in place per barrel of hydrocarbon pore space. The third equation relates stock-tank oil production (to 500-psia depletion pressure) with pressure, temperature and oil gravity. All three correlations are also presented in convenient graphical form. Gas production to 500-psia depletion pressure is approximately 92.6 per cent of the gas in place for each fluid, so no correlation was developed for gas production. INTRODUCTION The rate of discovery of shallow, low-pressure and low-temperature oil reservoirs in the United States has been declining in recent years. For this reason, the search for oil has gone to greater depths where high pressures and temperatures are encountered. A high-pressure and high-temperature reservoir is the environment in which many rich gas condensates and highly volatile oils are found. Because of this trend, the performance prediction of such reservoirs has become an important task of the reservoir engineer. The need and usefulness of a performance correlation based on field data that are available from the usual well-completion tests have previously been established. These earlier attempts have shown that the phase behavior of rich gas-condensate systems and volatile-oil systems can be correlated with fluid properties, pressure and temperature. However, very little information on gas-condensate depletion performance5 was available at the time of these earlier attempts. The availability of more recent data has made possible the development of an improved correlation. The data, as listed in Tables I and 2, are for 25 gas-condensate and two volatile-oil systems that were studied. The problem was to correlate the data for in-place fluids and the production data with the initial total gas-oil ratio, initial reservoir pressure and temperature, and stock-tank oil gravity. These correlations were obtained by multiple regression analysis, whereby the data were fitted to an equation by the method of least squared error. BASIS OF THE CORRELATIONS 1. The data used in the development of these correlations were obtained from depletion-performance calculations6 and well-test or production measurements. 2. All of the independent variables used in the correlations are available from the usual well-test completion data. 3. The reservoir volume considered is 1 bbl of hydrocarbon pore space (HCPS). 4. The gas-oil ratio used is the total standard cubic feet of gas (at 14.7 psia, 60F) coming off the entire separator train per barrel of stock-tank oil. This minimizes the effect of separator conditions which might vary from system to system. 5. The correlated pressures are the actual reservoir pressures which might or might not be the saturation pressure of the reservoir fluid.

An exploratory survey of the heat treatment response of commercial titanium alloys (Ti-150A, RC-130B, and MST 3AI-5Cr al-loys) shows a wide range of possible hardness and microstructural characteristics. The hardening is primarily dependent on the solid state transformation of the phase. An age hardening reaction which apparently is associated with ß decomposition and precipitation has been shown. Brittleness and notch sensitivity appear to be characteristic of age hardening to high hardness. Ductility, tensile strengths, and elongations are given. A NUMBER of commercially produced titanium-base alloys have been made available by the titanium metals industry. These alloys were developed to combine the light weight of titanium with increased strength through alloy additions. Usually the properties of these alloys are reported for material in the hot rolled and annealed condition. Since the production of commercial titanium has preceded the investigation of titanium-base alloy systems, the potential of these alloys is not well known. Although heat treatability has been indicated for these alloys, data on the response to heat treatment are quite limited. The heat treatability of titanium is based on the allotropic transformation of the high temperature, body-centered cubic ß structure to the low temperature, hexagonal close-packed a structure at approximately 1625 °F. This transformation in the pure metal is of little practical significance in heat treatment since the high temperature phase is not amenable to controlled transformation. Alloy additions serve to alter the transformation kinetics and permit control of the transformation by heat treatment variables. The effects of different alloys on the allotropic transformation in titanium classify them in two general categories,1 a stabilizing and ß stabilizing elements. The a stabilizers, represented by aluminum and oxygen, raise the temperature limits of the low temperature phase and introduce a two-phase a + ß temperature range. The ß stabilizers, represented by molybdenum and columbium, lower the equilibrium temperature of ß and give rise to an extended temperature range where both a and ß phases are stable. Another type of ß stabilizer, represented by iron, chromium, and manganese, introduces a eutectoid reaction. Some commercial titanium alloys belong to complex multiple element systems. Based upon the phase diagrams of the binary systems, the general effect of commercial compositions is to vary the stability of the high temperature phase and significantly alter its transformation characteristics. Therefore it is expected that the characteristics of alloyed titanium can be altered by heat treatment. The present investigation was undertaken to survey the variations in hardness, microstructure, and mechanical properties as affected by heat treatment variables. Commercial Alloys lnvestigated The commercially available titanium-base alloys selected for this investigation and obtained as 3/4 in. diameter hot rolled and annealed bars are listed in Table I. The producer did not determine the chemical composition of the Ti-150A heats X1052 and L685. The early heats of Ti-150A, prefixed with the letter X, were melted with tungsten-tipped electrodes and cast in approximately 500 lb ingots 12 in. in diameter. The heats prefixed with the letter L were melted under a revised melting practice yielding approximately 1300 lb ingots 16 in. in diameter. The final annealing treatment was at 1200" to 1250°F for 1 hr. The MST-3A1-5Cr alloy was melted in an induction furnace and cast in 7 in. diameter ingots. This practice produces high carbon material and some variation in the amount of carbides was found in different sections of the same bar. The RC-130B alloy was melted with a carbon arc. This alloy showed approximately 2 pct carbides. No large segregation effects were observed.
