This paper describes the result of a series of experiments run in the laboratory of the School of Mines, Columbia University, during the winter of 1927-28. It shows that the several operating adjustments of a pneumatic table produce effects in the action of a given coal that may be grouped into two classes, viz.: stroke length, speed and rocker-arm angle, which affect longitudinal travel; air supply and table slope (transverse and longitudinal), which determine transverse travel. The magnitude of the effect of the different adjustments varies. Some of the adjustments affect stratification of the bed, both as respects size and specific gravity of the bed components, as well as direction of travel. Operation of a pneumatic table is fundamentally different from that of a wet table in that the former exerts, through the air supplied, a force on the particles upward away from the deck which is lacking on the wet table while, on the other hand, it lacks the positive control over cross travel that is supplied by the wash and feed water. Apparatus The pneumatic table used is shown in Fig. 1. Deck A is 20 by 12 in. and consists of nainsook supported on slats that register with the riffles. Fig. 2 is a photomicrograph of the nainsook used. It shows that the cotton threads average about 0.13 mm. dia. and the apertures about 0.17 mm. The deck carries 12 riffles consisting of wooden strips, 3/16 in. wide and 1/4 in. high, laid parallel to the feed side of the table. The riffles terminate along a line starting on the feed side at a point 11 in, from the mechanism end and running to the corner formed by the coal side and slate end. Taper starts from a line that runs parallel to their terminal line through the junction of the upper riffle with the mechanism end. The height at the terminal line is about 1/32 in. The deck with its supporting slats is carried on a framework consisting of rails A, sloping end rails B, and adjustable metal strips C, which latter permit variation in transverse slope. ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

OBSERVATIONS have been made that the substitution of antimony for bismuth in Bi2Te3 leads to anomalies in some of the electrical and magnetic properties of the Bi2Te3-5S2TeS alloy system at the composition ratios 2 Bi2Te3 : 1 Sb2Tes and 1 Bi2Te3 : 2 Sb2Te3. Airapetiants and Efimova1 have reported the peaking of the nondegenerate hole mobilities, at these compositions for sintered materials and ascribe the peaking to the formation of ordered alloys. Prior to assessing potential for in-situ leaching, it is advantageous to identify the nature of the probable reactants in the ore horizon, including both the uranium species and those in the gangue material. We report mineralogical data on an areally-broad suite of samples from the Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation in the Crownpoint area of the Grants Mineral Belt. Optical microscope, electron micro-probe, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and wet chemical analyses were conducted. In these samples, the uranium occurs predominantly as either coffinite or uraninite. The host rock is arkosic sandstone, comprised mainly of detrital quartz and feldspar. The minerals kaolinite and chlorite are present in claystone clasts and calcite occurs as a cement. Major trace elements include molybdenum, vanadium, iron, selenium and sulfur. Carbonaceous organic material is present in the ore and is intimately associated with the uranium mineral when it is coffinite. Geochemical, pyrolytic and 13C NMR analyses indicate organic material is probably a very mature, coaly-type kerogen derived from plant components.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated methods of recovering potash values from process and waste brines. Laboratory pan evaporation of four chloride brines produced crude salts containing predominantly sylvite, halite and carnallite. Six sulfate- chloride brines produced crude salts containing primarily schoenite, kainite, leonite, sylvite, carnallite, and halite. Potash grades ranged from 7.2% to 22.2% K20, and recoveries by crystallization ranged from 85% to 99%. Sylvite flotation from chloride evaporites with amine collector, recovered 90% to 97% of the potash in a concentrate containing 54.3% to 60.3% K20. Fatty acid flotation of the high sulfate evaporite recovered 78% of the sulfate minerals in a 28%-K20 concentrate. Flotation of the remaining chloride minerals with amine collector recovered 80% of the potash in a 59.7%-K20 concentrate. Solar evaporation of 37 854 L (10,000 gal.) of brine recovered 99% of the potash in a crude evaporite containing 24.5% schoenite and 20% sylvite. Flotation in a 45-kglh (100-lblh) continuous flotation unit recovered over 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates, containing 28% and 62.3% K20, respectively. An economic evaluation is included.

METALLIC bismuth was known in the Middle Ages and the name is supposed to come from the German Wismut. The origin of the German name is uncertain. References to bismuth are found in the writings of Valentine, Paracelsus, and Agricola between 1450 and 1550. Early specimens of bismuth were very impure and often were confused with antimony, tin, and zinc. About the middle of the eighteenth century, J. H. Pott, C. J. Geoffroy, and Torbern Bergman succeeded in producing fairly pure bismuth and showed it to be an elementary metal similar in many respects to lead. H. S. Washington has estimated that bismuth occurs in the earth's crust about as abundantly as tungsten and silver; i.e., to the extent of 10-6 or 10-7 pct. It is found as native metal, both alone and associated with tin, copper, and other metals, and in a large variety of ores. The important ores are the sulfide (bismuthinite), the oxide (bismite), and the carbonates (bismutite and bismutosphaerite) . Other occurrences of bismuth are in the vanadate (pucherite), the selenide (guanajuatite), the telluride (tetradymite), and in many complex sulfides, arsenides, and antimonides. Bismuth minerals have been found in many parts of the world but very few of the bismuth deposits have been of economic value, the oxide ores from parts of China being the exception. The major portion of the bismuth production of today is the so-called by- product bismuth. The ore treated at the reduction plant (called Yangdei) of the Chiksan Mining Co., Korea, is brought from four of the company mines, and from the small tribute mines. The largest shipments come from Sajunkohl mine, situated about a mile and a half from the mill (Fig. 1). The ore is quartz of medium hardness. The average assay value in gold is $6.95 per ton. At the mine the ore is put into bins, and is then trammed over an 8 per cent, grade to the tipple bins above the mill, where the ore is drawn through the mill holes as desired. The capacity of the tipple bins is about 3,500 tons. Ore from Moonsukohl, Chung Tarrie, Yang Chun, and the tribute mines is brought in by bulls and bull wagons. The bulls carry from 350 to 800 lb.; the average wagon load is about 1,200 1b. (Fig. 2). One shovelful of ore out of every ten is taken as a sample. Synthetic polycrystals of wustite were reduced ilz H2-H2O mixtures over limited roncentration ranges wiltun the wustite. field and the weight changes were continuously followed with a McBain quartz spiral balance. The reduction was. found to be controlled by a combined surface plus solid-state diffusion reaction. The solid-state diffusion had an activation energy of 38 kcal. Self--diflusioities of iron decreased with itzcreasing vacancy concentration. The activation energy of. the surface reaction runs different tor- different samples. The surface reaction-rate constan increased with increasirzg vacancy concentration. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been studied for many years. Edstroem' has summarized the early work and has provided much information on the reduction of magnetite and hematite by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. More recent summaries are those by smeltzer2 and Themelis and Gauvin.3 Most investigators have reported that the iron metal which forms the outer layer during gaseous reduction is rather porous. According to Kohl and Engel14 the formation of such a porous iron layer depends on the properties of the underlying wiistite layer, on the reaction of the gas with the wustite surface, and on the transport of matter through the wustite layer. McKewan, Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis, and Knacke 10 have found that, if a porous iron layer is formed, a surface reaction between gas and wustite at the bottom of the pores controls the rate of reaction. Seth and ROSS 11 and Warner 12 have pointed out that the influence of the gaseous pore diffusion through the porous iron layer cannot be neglected. It has further been shown that the wiistite layer formed during reduction is dense and that transport of matter across the layer occurs only by solid-state diffusion of iron ions.13,14 The solid-state diffusion rates observed by Edstroem and Bitsianis 14 and the surface reaction rates observed by Quets eta1.' show that an interaction of the two steps in controlling the reaction rate has to be considered. In this investigation the reduction of wustite was studied with respect to the interaction of the two steps, isolated from any other effects, by reducing wustite within the wustite field from higher to lower oxygen concentrations with H2-H2O gas mixtures. A similar study with CO-CO2 mixtures has been performed by Levin and wagner.15 Fused synthetic wustite polycrystals were reduced in steps of 0.4 wt pct from 24.4 to 23.2 wt pct 0 and over a temperature range from 700" to 1050°C. A few tests were also conducted with reduction steps from 24.4 to 23.6 wt pct 0 and 24.5 to 23.2 wtpct0. The Fe-O phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1 where the composition of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases is plotted as pct H2 vs the temperature. A careful study of the literature led to the conclusion that the fully drawn equicomposition curves (in wt pct O) in the wustite field used by Edstroem 1,16 and other authors needed some correction. Based on results by Darken and Gurry17 (shown as open circles) and on some of our own data, four corrected curves for 23.2, 23.6, 24.0, and 24.4 wt pct O were calculated (drawn as dashed lines in Fig. 1) which should replace the fully drawn equicomposition curves. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Materials and Specimen Preparation. Wustite was prepared from iron sulfate (Fisher Scientific Co., New York) which had a purity of over 99.92 pct, with small amounts of manganese, copper, and zinc adding up to 0.03 pct. From the aqueous solution iron oxalate was precipitated and decomposed to magnetite according to Economos. 18 The magnetite powder was pressed into cylinders and sintered in vacuum at 900°C for several hours. The sintered compacts were placed in a platinum crucible of 2.5 cm diam which was fitted into a high-purity alumina crucible and then inserted into the center of the graphite heating element of an electric resistance furnace.lg The furnace was evacuated to below 1 p Hg and the magnetite sample was slowly heated. THIS year, 1950, is the golden anniversary of the construction and operation in this country of a tube mill for the sole purpose of fabricating aluminum alloy tubing. For a short period prior to the beginning of this mill, aluminum alloy tubing was obtained from foreign sources or produced in mills fabricating other metals. Indeed, it was a very short period because aluminum itself was a newcomer in the field of metals. The first sheet rolling mill had been in operation just eight years and a rod rolling mill for the production of wire and cable had been functioning one year. The first tube mill for aluminum was built by the Aluminum Co. of America in May 1900 and started production with four draw benches and five men, including the mill superintendent. The building itself was a lean-to attached to a sheet-rolling mill at New Kensington, Pa. The cost of equipment, including the draw benches, dies, mandrels, and other tools, was about $5000. This figure seems absurd in the present day but nevertheless it was questioned at that time whether or not such a large sum should be spent to embark on a new and uncertain venture. The initial production system for the new mill consisted of casting round hollow ingots in a tilting-type iron mold, reducing the ingots to bloom size outside the plant, and finally drawing to size on the draw benches. This method of producing aluminum alloy tubing survived just two years, as blooms of satisfactory quality were not obtained consistently. It was superseded by the cupping method in which a 24-in. diam circle cut from a rolled plate was formed into a tube bloom using first a small cupping press and then a push bench. It was stated that tubing so produced was limited to a maximum diameter of 2 3/4 in. and to wall thicknesses varying from 12 to 24 gage. However, for the first time all the operations were performed at one plant and the result was a quality product. Later larger cupping presses and push benches were obtained and the method continued to be the principal one for aluminum alloy tubing for almost a quarter of a century. During the interim the use of a Alan Mannesmann -type billet piercer was explored and it was used to some extent, but failed to produce consistently a smooth inside surface suitable for drawing with aluminum alloys. Experiments started during the latter stages of World War I in the production of tube blooms with a hydraulic extrusion press, led to the use of this type of equipment to make tube blooms for further drawing during a change-over period extending from 1925 until 1930. At this time the cupping method was discarded completely. From these humble beginnings, the aluminum alloy tubing business expanded until well over six million pounds were produced in a single month in the United States during World War II. The major portion of this production was in strong alloys which did not appear in the tubing picture until 1022, when 17S alloy tubing was introduced for aircraft construction.

Cast ingots of 99.99 pct purity A1 and aluminum/copper alloys containing up to 2 pct Cu have been found to contain four zones rather than the three previously accepted, i.e., chill, colummar, and equiaxed zones. The fourth zone consists of a coarse dendritic layer across the top surface of the ingot which is open to the atmosphere. It is also found that the grains in the equiaxed region have a "cornet" shape, with a head which is coarsely dendritic and a tail which grew with the same structure as the columnar grains. Experiments using mechanical barriers, and others involving the elimination of the surface dendrile layer, have indicated that nucleation of the equiaxed zone is caused by the showering of dendritic particles from this surface dendrite layer. These particles are the dendritic heads found in the comet grains. A mechanism of nucleation and growth of these comet grains is put forward. Experiments with a number of other metals and alloys suggests that these conclusions may apply generally to ingots cast without the addition of nucleating agents, and solidified under normal conditions. THE macrostructure of cast ingots may contain the following three zones: i) a peripheral zone of fine equiaxed grains, commonly called the chill zone; ii) a zone of columnar grains extending inwards from the chill zone; iii) a central zone of equiaxed grains; these are normally larger than the chill grains. All three zones are not necessarily present in any particular ingot since their existence and magnitude depend upon the casting conditions and composition of the cast material. The mode of formation of zones i and ii is fairly well understood. However, the cause of the central equiaxed zone remains a matter of conjecture. Previous theories put forward to explain the mechanism of nucleation in the equiaxed zone have been examined by Chalmers1 and Winegard.2 At the time when the present work was carried out the most re -cent hypothesis was that due to Chalmers,1 who recognized more fully than previous workers that conditions in this zone during solidification were not conducive to nucleation. In his hypothesis, he suggested that nuclei were formed near the mould wall during the very early stages of solidification, and that they can drift into the central zone by convective motion. This was supported by evidence from experiments using mechanical barriers to stop the drift of nuclei. A similar hypothesis had previously been put forward by Genders.3 More recently, Jackson et al. 4 have observed that dendrite arms in organic compounds can melt off during solidification. They have postulated that this occurs in metals and alloys, and that the dendrite arms which have been freed from the main dendrite act as nuclei for the equiaxed zone. In the present work, critical metallographic examination has shown that there is a fourth zone in the macrostructure of cast ingots which is a dendritic layer over the top surface of the ingot. It is also shown that there is a relationship between this zone and nucleation of the equiaxed zone. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS The alloys examined were prepared from super -purity aluminum of 99.99 pct min purity (spectro-graphically detected impurities of Cu, Fe, Si, and Mg) and copper of 99.98 pct min purity (spectrographically detected impurities of Si, Zn, As, Fe, Pb, Bi, Ni, Sn, Mn, Ag, Cr, and Al). Three compositions of ingots were examined, containing 0.0, 0.1, and 2 pct Cu, respectively. The alloys were melted in an alumina-lined salamander crucible using a medium-frequency electric induction furnace; when the appropriate casting temperature was reached, the alloys were cast without degassing or fluxing treatment. The mould used was made of electrode graphite and had the following dimensions: external diameter 6 in., height 9 in., with a mould cavity 8 in. deep and a diameter tapering from 5 in. at the top to 4 in. at the bottom. Casting temperatures used were generally in the order of 70" to 90°C above the liquidus and the mould was at room temperature before casting. Inserts kere placed in the mould cavity in some experiments. These consisted of either an 18-g stainless-steel tube of 2 in. diam held axially in the mould i in. off the bottom and extending 1 in. out of the top of the mould or a "trap-door" barrier of stainless-steel gauze of 24-mesh held horizontally in the mould 31/2 in. down from the top. The construction of this insert is shown in Fig. 1. All inserts were preheated prior to casting to prevent chilling. RESULTS The macrostructures of ingots of the three compositions are described, in terms of the three generally recognized zones, in Table I, and illustrated in Figs. 2(a) to (c). The most interesting observation in this table is that relating to the shape of the equiaxed grains, which were not in fact equiaxed but of almost tear-drop shape. Closer examination of these grains showed that each consisted of a head which had a coarse dendritic structure and a tail which always grew in the opposite direction to heat flow, and which had the same structure as that of the columnar material of the ingot concerned; i.e., in the pure aluminum and 0.1 pct Cu alloy it was cellular and in the 2 pct Cu alloy it was cellular-dendritic. SINCE so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1 was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched speci-mens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270° and 350° C. The complete boundary in this region could not be deter-mined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram.

Instability of rock slopes may occur by failure along pre- existing structural discontinuities, by failure through intact material or by failure along a surface formed partly along discontinuities and partly through intact material. Although certain fundamental failure modes are recognized, the mechanisms of slope failure are varied and complex. Such mechanisms are governed by the engineering geology conditions of the rock mass, which are almost always unique to a particular site. An understanding of failure mechanisms requires a knowledge of the physical, mechanical and strength properties of the intact material and discontinuities which make up the rock mass, as well as the structural geology and hydrogeology. These engineering geology parameters also must be evaluated with respect to the slope geometry to determine failures which are kinematically possible. Only after obtaining a reasonable appreciation of the possible failure modes can a rational mechanical stability analysis be carried out. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional failure mechanisms should be considered in assessing the design of rock slopes. Simple analyses methods are used initially to identify those possible failures which could control slope stability. More complex and detailed analyses usually are required for a few critical failure modes which could control stability, or where a more complex type of failure mechanism is envisaged. Complex failure mechanisms are usually identified when assessing previous slope failures. More detailed information concerning slope geometry and engineering geology parameters must be acquired where analyses must be more rigorous.

A simple model for dilute interslitial solid solutions is set up which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the solid solution and the gaseous solute to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial thermody -namic functions of Ag-O and Fe-N dilute interstitial solid solutions from the measured equilibrium between these solutions and the gas phase. It is shown that the partial excess entropy of the solute atom in solution is a vibrational entropy which is due Principally to the oscillation of the interstitial atom and does not arise from electronic or elastic interaction between the solute atoms and solvent matrix. In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid interstitial solutions and a gaseous phase are used to deduce the important thermody-namic functions of the solid solution with the aid of a theoretical solubility equation formulated from a knowledge of the thermodynamic functions of the gas and a simple model for the solid solution. The quantity of principal interest which is deduced from the equilibrium data is the change in vibrational entropy occurring when a solute atom (u) is placed in an interstial site in the solvent (u) lattice. This paper forms part of a more general study in which the properties of condensed phases are deduced from measurements of the equilibrium between the condensed phase and a gas. Previous investigations have dealt with the equilibrium between krypton and liquid metals,' a pure metal and its vapor,' and dilute substitutional alloys and the vapor,3 and the subject has been popularly reviewed by McLellan.4 In the latter investigation3 the vapor pressures of very dilute Cu-Ag and Cu-Au alloys were measured with a Knudsen cell technique over a large range of temperatures and the analysis of the vapor-pressure data showed that the relative partial excess entropies were large and positive [ds= -Sudk = 30 for Au-Ag alloys and 150 for Cu-Au alloys; these values should be compared to unity, the value assumed for these exponentials in the quasi-chemical theory of solutions]. For many interstitial solutions experimental data is available for the equilibrium between the solution and a gaseous phase, and this can be used to deduce the vibrational entropies of the solute atoms in solution. The general method employed is to calculate the chemical potential of the solute atoms in the gas and equate this to pi, the chemical potential of solute atoms in the solid, which is deduced from a simple model set up for the dilute interstitial solution (in which the solute atoms act as bound oscillators in interstitial sites). This enables a theoretical solubility equation to be set up. In the case of Ag-O and Fe-N solid solutions the solubility c, is found to vary with temperature according to a relation of the type, where PU2 is the pressure of the O2 or Np molecules. Essentially, the theoretical solubility equation enables the parameter A(T), which gives the vibration entropy, and the parameter AH, which gives the energy of solution of a solute atom, to be estimated from the measured variation of solubility with temperature. The solutions treated are dilute enough to enable solute-solute interactions to be neglected so that the partial energy and excess entropy of solution E, and GS are not functions of composition and the configurational entropy is that of a random solution. Large positive values have been found for sxSu this quantity has not been given sufficient consideration in recent work on interstitial solutions and it is felt that the partial thermodynamic quantities of very dilute solutions should be understood before the thermodynamics of concentrated solutions can be fully appreciated. EXPERIMENTAL DATA 1) The Silver-Oxygen System. The measurements of Steacie and Johnson,= using silver foils, indicate that there is a pronounced minimum in the solubility vs temperature curve for O-Ag solutions. Eichenauer and Miiller6 have recently redetermined the solubility of oxygen in silver using a method developed in the investigation of metal-hydrogen systems.7 The solubility determinations were carried out on compact specimens of differing shapes and sizes and the results indicate a much lower solubility than was obtained by Steacie and Johnson with no minimum at 400°C. Among the names which won a world-wide fame during the golden age of the early fifties, Bendigo and Ballarat were to Australia, what the Yuba and Grass Valley were to California. The map of Victoria did not for a long time show the name of old Bendigo;* for this first and more distinctive name was replaced with the more English Sandhurst, just as the alluvial diggings gave place to quartz mining. Towards the close of last pear, steps were taken to give back the old name, as associated with the early days of rich alluvium, and more suggestive than the application taken secondhand from an English military academy. History. The first discovery of gold? in this district, was made in the autumn of 1851 ; but there has never been any certainty as to the day or the man. At that time the country around Bendigo Creek was a part of the Ravenswootl sheep-run, and its resemblance to the Forest Creek district (now Castlemaine), induced the first prospecting. It was late in November when the "rush" broke out; the shepherds left their flocks; the sylvan solitudes were disturbed by * The name of Bendigo is said to have been derived from a hut-keeper on the Ravenswood sheep-run, who on account of his fondness for " fisticuffs " was nicknamed Bendigo, after the prize-fighter of that name. It is not aboriginal, as is often supposed, but Spanish ; and equivalent to our Benedict. There must always be some confusion between the two names of Sandhurst and Bendigo; the town, and with it the gold-field, having been three tinies named. Several other old familiar names have been likewise unfortunately replaced by second-hand English ones; so that an old digger talks of Forest Creek when he means the modern Castlemaine, Mt. Ida for Heathcote, Growler's Creek for Bright, etc. I shall use the names Sandhurst and Bendigo interchangeably. The first discovery of gold in Australia, was made by E. H.Hargraves, February 12, 1851, near Bathurst in New South Wales. In August of the same year the discovery at Buninyong, near Ballarat, inaugurated the first of a series of rushes to the Victoria gold-fields.

Laboratory experiments on the reverse combustion of tar sands in a linear adiabatic system have shown that a highly upgraded oil can be produced from an exceedingly viscous, immobile oil. The dependence on the air-injection rate of peak temperature, combustion-zone velocity, oil recovery, air-oil ratio, residual coke and oil, fuel burned and distribution of product gases is shown graphically. Eflects of initial temperature, oxygen concentration, oil saturation and heat loss are discussed. Experiments bearing on the coking properties of heavy oils are mentioned and some results exhibited. Field application of the process hinges on the existence of adequate air permeability and the rate of reaction under reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION It has been established that oil can be recovered from underground reservoirs by means of at least two fundamentally distinct methods involving in situ combustion of a certain fraction of the oil. Characteristic of both of these known methods is the production of oil from one or more wells by means of hot gases formed when a high-temperature reaction zone is advanced through the reservoir. In both cases, the reaction zone is created by heating certain of the wells to a sufficiently high temperature prior to the introduction of air, and the zone is maintained and advanced through the reservoir by appropriate control of the air-injection rate. In the first of these methods, which is called "forward combustion",' the combustion zone advances in a direction which is generally the same as that of the air flow; whereas in the second method, "reverse combustion",' the combustion zone moves in a direction generally opposite to that of the air flow. Forward combustion, on the one hand, is an ideal combustion process in the sense that a minimum of the most undesirable fraction of the oil is consumed as fuel in the form of coke, a clean sand is left behind and generated heat is used as efficiently as possible. However, the applicability of forward combustion is limited. Since the products of combustion, vaporized oil and connate water must flow into relatively cold regions of the reservoir, there is an upper limit on the viscosity of oil which can be moved by this process in a practical and economical fashion.' On the other hand, it is characteristic of reverse combustion that the vaporized oil and water together with the products of combustion are produced through sand which is already hot and has had its mobile liquid content eliminated. This means there is no upper limit on oil viscosity; indeed, the oil may be an entirely immobile semi-solid. However, fuel for the process is an intermediate fraction of the original oil, and the most undesirable fraction remains on the sand surface as a substantial deposit of coke. Since this coked material is not burned during reverse combustion, it represents energy which is available for the production of oil but is not used for this purpose. It follows that one can expect economics to be somewhat less attractive with reverse combustion than with forward combustion. Nevertheless, it is a process which is designed for reservoirs where forward combustion is impossible and, as such, has become a subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. In this paper, only experiments made with tar sands are discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS We proceed, then, to consider the process of reverse combustion in greater detail. Fig. 1 illustrates a temperature profile defining a combustion zone which moves from right to left when air flows from left to right. In Zone 1, the temperature is the initial reservoir temperature, and the tar sand is as yet unaltered. This statement must be modified to the extent that physical properties of the oil may be changed by low-temperature oxidation at reservoir temperature. As air passes into Zone 2, which has been warmed by conduction, it assists in vaporization of the very light ends (if there are any), and oxidation occurs at a significant rate. In this region, there is almost no production of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide because predominantly addition-type reactions take place with the formation of oxygenated compounds such as aldehydes and acids together with water. This name is applied to the present mining law, as enacted in 1872 and since, to indicate its leading characteristic—in which it differs from all previous mining laws of this or any other country. The earlier act, passed in 1866, was practically the first attempt of Congress to deal with the question of mining titles upon the public domain. It was framed after nearly twenty years of acquiescence on the part of the Government in the self-constituted tribunals, officials, rules, and customs of the mining districts. In its recognition of these, and in several other particulars, the act of 1866 was open to serious criticisms. It is the purpose of this paper, not to trace the history of legislation on this subject, or show in detail what were the faults of the earlier law, but rather, by a discussion of certain aspects of the present law, to point out how great a revoluition it has effected in the rights of mining locators, and to indicate some of the difficulties attending its application. In the attempt to correct the vagueness of the act of 1866 an entirely new elernent was introduced into the law, bringing with it a new set of difficulties. Under the act of 1866 and the miners' customs which it followed, the lode was the thing claimed and subsequently acquired by patent. And the claim to a given number of feet on the longitudinal course of the lode was rooted in 'a discovery of any part of the lode in any part of the claim. ("Extensions" could in many districts—perhaps universally—be located and claimed on the strength of the discovery in the principal claim to which they referred; but this is a point not essential to the present discussion.) It was not necessary to find the outcrop or the upper edge of a lode in order to lay a valid location upon it. An explorer, sinking a shaft and intersecting a lode not already discovered and claimed by another, could claim by that discovery the number of feet along that lode which the local laws might permit (not exceeding the maximum set by the United States statute) whether his sur-

A procedure of obtaining specimens of lead, tin, and cadmium with a moderately equiaxed structure and a smooth surface suitable for etching without grinding and polishing is described; the advantages of general oblique illumination (as opposed to vertical illumination) in the photomicrography of pure metals .are stated. Using these methods, a statistical study of the changes brought about in deformed lead, on annealing, has been made. The common mode of structural change was found to be recrystallization. Cases of growth of one original grain into another were rare; but if a totally recrystallized specimen was annealed above 200° C., a few large grains appeared and spread over the whole area, except for a certain number of small grains which remain unabsorbed. The temperature needed to produce structural change in lead was found to be lower, the greater the degree of deformation. With tin, an extension of 28 per cent. caused practically no recrystallization at ordinary temperatures, but recrystallization occurred if the specimen was heated to 100° C. In cadmium at low temperatures, the grain size decreased in marked manner as the deformation increased; but at high annealing temperatures, the grain size was comparatively independent of the degree of deformation. THE structural changes in metals brought about by annealing following a deformation at a low temperature has been the subject of many investigations. In studying the structural characteristics of martensite it is desirable that a clear conception of the material from which martensite is produced should first be obtained. Any theory of its formation and structure incompatible with the facts of its parent substance, austenite, can be eliminated with little consideration. Austenite is the name applied to solid solutions of carbon and other elements in gamma iron. At temperatures above about 900" C. (1650" F.), pure iron exists in a system of crystallinity1 entirely different from the crystal structure below that temperature. This high-temperature allotrope of iron is of an atomic structure associated with great ductility, having very manifold symmetry and an abundance of easy slip planes. The exceptionally ductile and malleable metals (gold, silver, platinum, copper, aluminum, and nickel) have this same atomic arrangement— the face-centered cubic. The low-temperature allotrope of iron, alpha iron, the solid solutions of which are known as ferrite, has a body-centered cubic arrangement of atoms. Like it, in crystal structure, are the less ductile and malleable metals, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium and chromium. Fig. 1 shows the two atomic arrangements known in iron; the diagrams are drawn to scale. Either of these modifications of iron may dissolve other elements in the solid state; by so doing, the temperature of the transformation is changed. In general 2-7, it appears that a solid solvent metal dissolves a metal solute by substituting foreign atoms in its own space lattice. Thus, iron may dissolve nickel in either of its crystalline forms by permitting an atom of nickel here and there to occupy the normal position

Of the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of stantlard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inelines, the installation of milling-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1900.
