The annual meeting of the Colorado Section was held on the evening of Jan. 24, at the University Club, Denver, Colo.; SO members and guests were in attendance and the meeting was considered one of the most interesting ever held by the local section. After the usual dinner, the officers whose names are given above were elected for the ensuing year. Dr. David T. Day and Dr. G. H. Clevenger, of the Bureau of . Mines, were present and enlightened us with short talks on oil shales and other work of the Bureau. Mr. J. V. N. Dorr was home from a visit to New York and Washington, and told us something of the war work now going on at our National Capitol. Retiring Chairman Loughridge had been insisting for months that this meeting should be given up chiefly to listening to someone who could give his personal experience in going "over the top" in western France; after a long search he succeeded in finding Sargt. F. C. Strickland, M . M., of the Second Canadian Mounted Rifles, who had very recently been discharged from the hospital with permanent disabilities and has accepted recruiting service rather than a discharge. The success of this plan was evidenced by the close attention accorded the speaker for almost two hours, during which he described conditions, hardships, successes and failures of warfare on the western front. Hardly a listener moved during this talk, and all left with a. feeling that they would have liked to hear more. FRED CARROLL, Secretary.

Mine Taxation On Monday morning, Sept. 22, a session on- Mine Taxation was held in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Dept., U. S. Treasury, Mr. R. C. Allen presiding. The ten years, 1879 to 1888, inclusive, have been notable in the history of iron-making for the great rise during the latter part of 1879 and the earlier half of 1880; for the maximum of production in 1882 ; for the gradual decline and the reduced product through 1883,1884 and nearly to the end of 1885; then, for the recovery through- 1886 and 1887; and the extraordinary outputs of our iron furnaces during the last three years. The price of pig-iron might be taken as an index to the condition of the iron-mining industry, and if represented graphically, they would shorn approximately parallel curves. The mining industry cannot always respond quickly to a rise in price and an increased demand for ore; nor can its production drop simultaneously with sudden falls in price of iron and of ore. Hence, the irregularities of the one are not reflected in the other. The statistics of the iron mines collected by the United States census, for the year ending June 30, 1880, exhibit admirably their condition at that time. The reports received from mine owners and managers, of the production for the year 1888, furnish the basis for a comparison and supply data for some notes on the changes in the iron-mining industry in New York which have taken place in this period of time. The iron-ores of New York may be grouped in the following districts: I. The Highlands of the Hudson (magnetites). II. The Lake Champlain and Adirondack Region (magnetites). III. St. Lawrence and Jefferson Counties (red hematites). IV. Clinton and Wayne Counties (fossil-ores of the Clinton Group). V. Dutchess and Colnmbia Counties (limonites). VI. The Hudson River (carbonates). VII. Staten Island (limonites). The ores of the first and second districts, as enumerated, are almost exclusively magnetites; those of the third and fourth are hematites;

In constructing a theory of the flow and hardening of metals, v necessarily make use of such phenomena as seem to be universal1 observed in metals. It is, therefore, a matter of concern to the con structors of such mnemonic systems if one or two of the group classific as metals show anomalous behavior. Such egregious phenomena observed in pure or nearly pure iron in the reaction of its mechanic properties to low-temperature annealing after cold work and to increase temperature of testing. In short it has been generally observcd tha iron, as an outstanding exception among metals, increases its hardnes and strength by low-temperature annealing after cold work,' and alt by increase of testing temperature to the range of 150" to 300" C. The investigation here recorded was made then with the object ( ascertaining if similar phenomena were observed in high-purity iro and, if not, to the presence of which impurities these phenomena coul be traced. Experimental Procedure Three kinds of iron were taken for a study of hardening by rehcatin after cold work: 1. Vacuum-melted electrolytic iron; melted in an Arsem furnace in a magnesia crucible. That this iron was of high purity is indicated b a magnetic permeability above 20,000. 2. Electrolytic iron melted in air in a small laboratory furnace. 3. Armco iron, commercial material. These materials in the form of forged bars, annealed at 980" C. in vacuum, were reduced 30 per cent. in thickness by cold rolling and the reheated to temperatures varying from 100' to 500' C. The Rockwe hardness number was measured after each treatment. The results and shown in Fig. 1, curves 1, 2 and 3.

A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

Direct observations were made on the recrystalli-zntion of a cold-rolled (110) [001] crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe by annealing thin sections of the specimen inside the electron microscope during examination. Subgrain formation, presumably by polygonization, occurs rapidly, followed by a slow increase in the subgrain size before recrystallization can be detected. No migration of the subgrain boundaries was observed, and the formation of recrystallization nuclei by coalescence of subgrains is suggested. Re-c~ystallization characteristics of various texture components were individually examined. AS reported in a previous paper: orientations of the various deformation texture components in a 70 pct cold-rolled (110) [0011 crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe were completely confirmed by transmission electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen. These orientations can be summarized as follows: Over most areas of the deformed crystal (111) planes are parallel to the surface. These areas correspond to either $- the two main defor: mation textures, the (111) [112] or the (111) [112].2-5 Within a few areas, (100) planes parallel to the surface are frequently found. These areas represent the minor deformation texture component, the (100) [Oll] type, which is derived from rotated Neumann bands.2'4'5 Only in very rare instances are (110) planes found parallel to the surface. This orientation corresponds to the very weak texture component of the (110) [001] type. In a pole figure, this (110) [0011 orientation is located within the orientation spread between the two main (111) [1121 type textures. Usually the electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen are very simple ones, i.e., for any one area the pattern consists only of sharply defined spots of a single orientation. In some areas, however, more or less continuous rings of weaker intensities are superimposed on a simple pattern, indicating the presence of a wide range of additional orientations. In order to understand in detail the recrystallization of this cold-worked crystal, the recrywtallization characteristics of each of the various deformation texture components must be examined. This can best be done by using a high-temperature stage and transmission electron microscopy techniques, whereby small areas corresponding to the various texture components can be selected individually for examination. The present paper presents results obtained by this method. MATERIAL AND METHOD Specimens were prepared from a previously studied1 single crystal of a commercial grade 3 pct Si-Fe alloy with an initial orientation (110) [00l], cold-rolled 70 pct from 0.014 in. to 0.004 in. in thickness. Thin foils were prepared by electrolytic polishing as described in the earlier paper.' Specimens of this thin foil were then mounted in a high temperature stage similar to the one designed by Whelan.6 A direct current was used as the heating source. The temperature of the heating grid was calibrated by means of a Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple in a vacuum chamber (0.01 to 0.02µHg). Maximum variation within the temperature range of 250o to 000°C was about ± 25°C. After the desired areas were selected for examination, the specimen was heated to a low temperature for some time while the selected area was constantly watched. When no further change in structure and orientation could be observed, a higher temperature was applied. An approximate method of calculation is developed in this paper which allows duplication of radial unsteady-state gas flow computer results where Darcy's law applies, such as those reported by Aronofsky and Jenkins and Bruce, Peaceman, Rachford, and Rice. Moreover, the new calculation method can be used to obtain results for radial unsteady-state gas flow obeying the quadratic flow law proposed by Duwez and Green. Means are discussed for predicting well behavior at single or superimposed flow rates in finite or infinite reservoirs, determining reservoir rock properties from well-test data, reproducing and interpreting back-pressure test data, and determining the radial extent and reserves of gas reservoirs from well-test data. Example calculations are presented for gas flow following both Darcy's law and the quadratic flow law. INTRODUCTION Since the publishing of U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7,1 most gas-well testing methods have been based on the equation q = y (pl2 - pw2)a, where q = production rate, pl and pw, are formation pressure and sandface pressure, respectively, and y and a are constants to be obtained from test data. These methods, used for predicting both deliverability and "open-flow" capacity of gas wells, have been useful and accurate in many cases but unsatisfactory in others. Even at best, however, they do not supply information about the formation or lead to an understanding of nonsteady-state gas flow in porous media. Many theoretically based studies2-4 of gas flow obeying Darcy's law have been made.' Since the partial differential equations which result from combining Darcy's flow law with the continuity equation are nonlinear, most of the published research consists of either numerical solutions or analytical solutions for linear approximating equations. Such solutions have been of limited value in field work due to their unhandy form and their failure to correlate most field data. There is evidence5,6 which indicates that Darcy's law is inadequate to describe gas flow at some flow rates of practical interest. A quadratic flow law: which reduces to Darcy's law at low rates, is more successful in accounting for experimentally observed behavior. This flow law has been applied successfully to a few hypothetical reservoir cases in work which has recently been published.10 However, these numerical solutions of the equations involved have been successful only on a special analog computer. Routine applications to field cases would be awkward and have not been attempted. The present paper describes an approximate method for computing nonsteady-state gas flow solutions which has been completely successful in predicting the results for both Darcy flow and quadratic flow obtained by elaborate numerical methods. The new calculation method allows determination of the observable variables in gas-well testing at constant rates. It is similar to the scheme of using a succession of steady states suggested by Muskat7 in that it makes use of steady-state and material-balance equations. It also is similar to the work of Aronofsky and Jenkins2 in that the new method includes Aronofsky and Jenkins' stabilized flow equation as a special case. It improves upon both of these calculation schemes in that it accurately describes all portions of reservoir history and suggests means of determining reservoir rock properties from well-test data. This paper deals only with production from a reservoir, in which case the rate is defined as being negative. The reservoir studied here is a homogeneous, disk-shaped porous body of uniform thickness, with all boundaries sealed except the inner radial boundary of the well.

Drilling rate is a parameter that should be considered in determining the volume requirements for air and gas drilling. The use of past methods which ignore the effects of the solids content upon the pressure and velocity of the annulus flow stream can result in undercalculation of the required volurne by as much as 50 per cent. A vertical-flow equation is presented for determining volume requirements. This equation includes the effect of the solids that are transported up the annulus in the flow stream by incorporating the drilling rate as one of the parameters. The effect of down-hole temperature on required circulation rates is also ana-lvzed. A simple approximate method of determining volume requirements is presented. This method is more accurate than the methods used in the past. Hole cleaning difficulties are analyzed for a recent air drilling job where past methods indicated that - excess air was being used. Sample curves of calculated boitom-hole pressures are presented for air and gas drilling in several hole sizes. INTRODUCTION In certain areas the use of air or natural gas as a circulating medium for drilling oil and gas wells is becoming a common practice. Large increases in penetration rate and bit life are achieved through the use of these media in preference to mud or water. Drilling rates as high as 90 ft/hr have been obtained in shales. The importance of maintaining adequate circulation rate is generally recognized; however, much disagreement exists among drilling operators as to what constitutes "adequate" circulation rate. In quarry drilling, where annular velocities can be accurately determined, an annular velocity of 3,000 ft/min of standard air is required for best results in rocks having approximately the same density as those commonly penetrated in drilling oil or gas wells'. Although this standard air velocity has proven satisfactory for quarry drilling, some oil and gas well drilling operators believe that an equivalent annular velocity of more than 4,000 ft/min is required; others believe that as little as 2,000 ft/min . is sufficient. Much of this disagreement results from determining the required circulation rates with methods which fail to incorporate the drilled solids in an equation which is applicable to vertical flow. Hughes Tool Co. Bulletins No. 23' and 23-A3 present data for determining circulation rates based on the Weymouth formula. These data do not include the drilling rate as a parameter and, therefore, neglect the effect of the solids being transported up the annulus. In spite of this apparent defect and the fact that the Weymouth formula is not applicable to vertical flow, the Hughes data have well served the drilling industry in many areas and are important and timely contributions to the science of air and gas drilling. The Hughes data purposely omit a correction for increasing down-hole temperature. At slow drilling rates this effectively compensates for the use of a formula which is not valid for vertical flow; however, volumes determined by the Hughes method are not sufficient to support rapid drilling rates at moderate and great depths. For example, Phillips Petroleum Co.'s Cauthorn "D" No. l in the Vinegarone field for Val Verde County, Tex., was air drilled from 1,500 to 9,300 ft using a compressor delivering 1,400 cu ft/min. The 8 3/4-in hole was drilled with 5-in. drill pipe, and drilling rates as high as 90 ft/hr were obtained between 7,000 and 9,300 ft. No water or caving hole was encountered. At 7,728 ft it was necessary to wash-out 60 ft of cuttings to reach bottom after a trip to change bits. At 8,130 ft a twist-off occurred and the drill col-lars were stuck in drill cuttings. These difficulties indicate that the 1,400 cu ft/min of air was not sufficient to keep the hole clean. Hughes data indicates that 1,180 cu ft/min is sufficient to produce an annular ve-

THE first record of the quarrying of dimension stone in Minnesota dates back to 1820 when limestone was quarried locally for part of old Fort Snelling. Limestone quarries were operated at Stillwater, Mankato, and Winona as early as 1854. Granite was quarried first at St. Cloud in 1868, and within a few years thousands of tons were shipped to widespread points. Rough dimension stone for large buildings furnished the first important market, but beginning in 1886 paving blocks were in demand. The largest shipment was in 1888, when 1925 cars were shipped from the St. Cloud area. Quartzite was quarried first at New Ulm in 1859 and somewhat later at Pipestone and elsewhere in southwestern Minnesota: The productive dolomite quarries at Kasota were opened first in 1868 and have continued as large producers of a variety of stone to the present time. At present, the industry is controlled by relatively few operators, and for that reason detailed figures on dimension stone are not released for publication. A general idea may be obtained from the data in the Minerals Yearbook for 1948. The figures for total stone produced in Minnesota are 1,804,000 tons valued at $5,090,652. Probably the largest item in the latter figure is received from dimension stone. A better idea of the situation, in relation to the country as a whole may be gained by using the data for 1930 when more companies were operating in Minnesota, and complete figures were published. In that year Minnesota produced granite valued at $2,668,119 and ranked third among the states in value. Minnesota's production of granite was almost exclusively for dimension stone. In the same year Minnesota produced 300,000 tons of limestone (dolomite) valued at $840,860, and this likewise was mainly dimension stone. In finished limestone Minnesota ranked second among the states in 1930. Sandstone and minor amounts of quartzite are the only other dimension stones that have been produced in Minnesota, but the quarries are now inactive. The commercial stones of Minnesota have been described in two reports by Bowled and by Thiel and Dutton.2 The early history of quarrying in Minnesota and extensive notes on the various rocks are given by N. H. Winchell.3 Small limestone and dolomite quarries were numerous throughout the area of Paleozoic rocks in southeastern Minnesota. Early production was largely dimension stone. With the increased use of Portland cement, most of these ceased production, and today only those at Kasota and Winona remain in operation. In recent years many quarries have reopened and new ones started, but these are devoted to the production of crushed rock and agricultural lime. As the application of modern quarrying and finishing methods increased, small companies in the granite business have dropped out, and the remaining companies have modernized their plants, purchased old quarries, and opened up new ones, thus furnishing a wide variety of granites suitable for most of the customary uses. It is the purpose of this review to present notes on' the geology and operations of each of the quarries now operating within the state. Granites and Related Igneous Rocks The term granite as used in this report includes granites, gneisses, diorites, gabbros, and other igneous rocks. The granites of greatest economic importance are found in three widely separated regions, see Fig. 1. 1-Central Minnesota in the region of the city of St. Cloud, 2-the upper Minnesota River valley region, 3-the northeastern portion of the state, commonly referred to as the Arrowhead region. The St. Cloud Region: The rocks of the St. Cloud region are mainly granites and related rock types such as monzonites and quartz diorites. The stones may be grouped into three major types, namely, pink granite, red granite and gray granite. Most of the pink granite occurs in the area to the southwest of St. Cloud. The rock is best described as stone with large pink crystals set in a finer grained black and white background. The minerals of the matrix occur in remarkably uniform sizes, and the pink crystals are sufficiently uniform in. their dis-

Several methods of analyzing pressure build-up data in wells have been presented by various authors. This paper reviews the theory and method of D. R. Horner and presents example calculations performed on data obtained by testing several different types of wells. These calculations include, (1) graphical estimation of final static pressure, (2) determination of the productive capacity of the pay away from the well bore and. (3) the degree to which the formation adjacent to the well bore has been damaged by completion or other causes. The methods of testing and precautions which should be taken to assure the best data possible are discussed. Limitations and reliability of calculated results are also treated. INTRODUCTION Pressure testing of wells is generally limited to the determination of producing and static mean formation pressures. The so-called "static" pressure determination.. along with PVT, electric log and production data, enable the reservoir engineer to determine, within reasonable limits, the drive mechanism of the reservoir and in some cases. the amount of edge water encroachment. Producing pressure tests enable calculation of productivity indices and allow the engineer to plan the systematic production of a pool for optimum conservation of suhsurface energy. The radial flow formula advanced by Muskat' has been based on the assumption of incompressible radial fluid flow. It has been known that reservoir fluids do not behave in an ideally incompressible manner. For example, incompressible flow theory indicates a simple logarithmic relationship between the difference of the instantaneous and static well pressures when plotted against time. 'The latter stages of this type of plot of pressure build-up data generally show a marked devia-, tion from the earlier straight line trend. which deviation may be shown to be due to the compressible flow of fluids toward the well bore. Shut-in times of 24, 48. 72. or at most 96 hours are currently in wide use for determining so-called "static" reservoir pressure. Due to the continuation of compressible flow of fluids into the well bore long after this arbitrarily taken shut-in time, the determination of static pressures has almost invariably resulted in lower than equilibrium values. Materials balance calculations made early in the life of a reservoir often result in a calculated reserve which later observations prove to be too low. Failure to obtain reliable "static" reservoir pressures within the prescribed 24 or 48-hour build-up period has undoubtedly been a major factor in obtaining these low estimates. Comparison of theoretical and actual productivity performance has indicated that formation damage and not being able to attain true static pressures have been partially responsible for the observed discrepancies. Research into the theory of compressible flow behavior has resulted in methods of applying these theories to the testing of wells. Application of the developed theories to pressure build-up performance indicates that in many cases the following can be estimated. 1. The static reservoir pressure. 2. The in-place effective formation permeability away from the well bore. 3. The degree or extent by which the formation has been damaged adjacent to the well bore, either through completion methods or subsequent damage due to fluid entry. REVIEW OF THEORY Horner2 has shown that the pressure build-up within a "point source" well is approximated by the following formula: Equation (1) is the approximate "point source" solution to the radial compressible flow equation advanced by Muskat. The solution assumes the following: 1. A point source well is producing at constant rate from the center of an infinite reservoir with a constant pressure at its external boundary. 2. The fluid flowing is present in one phase only. 3. The compressibility and absolute viscosity of the fluid remain essentially constant over the range of temperature and pressure variation encountered. 4. The well i.; shut-in at the sand face arid there is 110 after production into the well bore. 5. The formation permeability is homogeneous in the direction of flow. From Equation (1) it can be seen that if an ideal well were shut-in while producing from a reservoir under the conditions assumed, the pressure build-up would be a logarithmic func-

The basic operating properties of the DorrClone are discussed and certain metallurgical applications which exploit these properties are presented. An effective method of controlling the consistency of the DorrClone underflow is described. THIS paper presents in a general manner some of the applications of the DorrClone (Dutch States Mines cyclone) in the metallurgical and heavy chemical fields. Technical or mathematical analyses of the design factors and of the mechanism whereby the cyclone effects its separation have been capably treated in a series of previous papers.'-' Engineering and operational aspects of a few installations and laboratory tests have been chosen to emphasize the unique classification characteristics of the DorrClone and to illustrate its utility in certain difficult situations. Its use in coal washing and heavy-media operations are not considered. Some 25 or more industrial installations and applications of the DorrClone in the metallurgical fields are operating at present, ranging from single trial units to complete batteries composed of a multiplicity of units. The data were obtained in part from some of these, and in part from operations of units at the Westport Mill, the laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Co. at Westport, Conn. The DorrClone was developed, in principle, by the research dept. of the State Mines, Limburg, Holland, during World War 11. Its first use was to dewater a —50 micron sand used as a dense medium in coal washing. The metallurgical wet cyclone was first publicized by Driessen and Yancey and Geer.6 ince then the cyclone has been studied as a means of de-watering, heavy media concentration, and fine size classification. The DorrClone is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. pulp to be treated is pumped through the feed nozzle, A, into the feed cylinder, B. The feed nozzle is of rectangular cross-section, the outermost edge being tangent to the feed cylinder walls. Feed shims, C, may be attached to the innermost walls to adjust the open area of the feed nozzle available to entering pulp. The tangential injection of feed under pressure supports the vortex action of the pulp that has been detained in the cyclone; the centrifugal forces of this vortex throw the coarse particles to the walls of the cone, D, where they collect and pass downward and out through the adjustable apex opening, E. The fine particles contained in most of the water that entered with the feed pulp move to the inner spiral of the vortex and flow out through the vortex finder, F, contained in the orifice plate, G, which forms the top of cyclone chamber. The overflow pulp may then spray freely into a spray chamber, H, surmounting the cyclone or pass directly into a 90' elbow, I, of somewhat larger diameter than the vortex finder. Installation Where more than one cyclone is to be installed, best overall efficiency and ease of control are obtained with equal distribution of both pulp volume and weight of solids among the cyclones, and with the same pressure being maintained at each cyclone feed nozzle. Fig. 3 is a suggested arrangement for feeding two or more cyclones in parallel. Feed pressure control: Under normal operating conditions it is not unusual for some surge to exist in the feed that is to be sent to the cyclone. As will be discussed later, surges in the solids content of the pulp are usually not of great operational consequence, but surges in feed volume are a problem. A new tankhouse was started in January 1959 at the Copper Refinery of the Boliden Co., Skelleftehamn, Sweden. In early 1961 a semiautomatic machine for looping and straightening of starting sheets was introduced to substitute previous manual operations. The machine as well as consequent, racking and handling is described. Finally, economic benefits achieved and new constructions for the future are discussed. HISTORY Tankhouse operations at the Boliden Co. 's Smelter in Skelleftehamn started in 1932 on a scale that since then has been gradually increasing. In order to rationalize the operations, a new tankhouse was erected. It went into production in January 1959 and was designed for a yearly production of 35,000 metric tons at a current density of 16 amps per sq ft. Already from the beginning, however, the tankhouse has been run with a current density of 21.5 amps per sq ft, corresponding to a maximum capacity of 50,000 tons a year. During the time of planning of the new tankhouse, due consideration was given to the possibilities of mechanizing the operations. New ideas could be and were actually tested on full or pilot plant scale in the old tankhouse. In that way we developed a system for the cathode handling including washing, weighing, and transportation. A system using forklift trucks in combination with trailers and overhead cranes has been developed for transportation and racking of anodes and also for handling of anode scrap. With respect to the electrolyte, circulation and temperature control are partly automatic. Special attention was paid to the production of starting sheets, which operation normally requires a great number of man hours, and it was made the object of a particular survey as to the best ways of straightening starting sheets, attaching loops to the sheets, and so forth. As a result, a machine was designed during 1957-58 and built in our own shops. After a period of tests, the new equipment was put in operation commercially on the 10th of April, 1961. Since this date the machine has produced about 2 million starting sheets without interruption and has been the only source of looped starting sheets for the tankhouse. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 shows all the major parts of the system. These parts are: slitting machine with feeding table (I), standard roller leveler, type Ungerer (2), tilting roller table (3), conveyors for sheets and suspension bars (4, 7), storage of suspension bars (51, punching and stitching machine (6), two lift-turn-tilt tables (8) for discharging the starting sheets, two rack conveyors (9) for sheet assemblies. Included are a hy-daulic pump station and panels for pneumatic and electric controls. SLITTING AND STRAIGHTENING The machine is fed by hand by a man sitting in front of the slitting-machine table, Fig. 2. This operator inserts one sheet at a time into the slitter. After being trimmed, the sheet is automatically conveyed to the following step of handling, straightening. The slitting machine cuts away about 8 mm of the upper and lower parts of the sheet (in relation to its original position in the stripper section) for two reasons. The first one is to give the machine sheets of uniform dimensions; the second one is a matter of quality. Normally the starting sheets as stripped have a thick edge at the bottom end. This part would collect anode slimes and might also cause short circuits when inserted in the cells without trimming. The straightener used is of German construction

(communication to the Secretary*) :—Although Mr. Bordeaux prefaces his paper with the statement-that it is a general outline of practice in the Republic, many of his statements seem to be made from the view-point of a particular case, which does not always agree with general practice. For the purpose of calling attention to some of these variations, I respectfully offer the following comments: The operation of crushing and grinding is performed by so many different methods and systems that it is useless to select any one as the standard. However, primary crushing in rock-breakers followed by stamps is thus far so general that it might be so classified. Whether or not it is the best way, is open to question. Regrinding may be performed by any of the various types of Chilean mills, Huntington mills, or similar machines, or the material may be taken directly from the stamps and delivered to the tube-mills. Mr. Bordeaux's statement that " the slimes can be treated only by decantation; the new Butters slime-filter, as used in Nevada, does not seem to be successful with silver-ores," is surely an error. All over Mexico many of the purely silver-ores are being successfully handled by the Butters or similar filters, such as the Moore and the Burt filters, and a letter to the manufacturers of these filters will undoubtedly bring a list of the silver-ores now being successfully treated in this way. The statement that crushing silver-ores in solution is impossible is equally erroneous. Most modern mills crush the ore in solution, in some cases containing as much as 0.12 per cent, of KCN. I cannot for the moment recall any modern mill in Mexico which does not follow this practice. There may be some reason for it in particular instances, but, generally speaking, the practice is to crush in solution. Care in installation avoids any mechanical loss of cyanide, and the chemical loss is so small as to be negligible.

THE terms surface tension and surface energy are well known when applied to liquids and are generally described by referring to the excess energy of the air: liquid interface as a result of unsaturated molecular forces surrounding the surface molecules of the liquid due to the presence of the air phase on one side. Such unbalanced forces produce the familiar water droplet of spherical form and are generally summed up as a surface tension measured in dynes per centimeter which can be shown mathematically to be equal numerically to a corresponding surface energy expressed in ergs per square centimeter. A specific surface energy, however, is best thought of as the energy necessary to produce one unit, of new surface on a substance. Hence, in producing a bubble in a flotation cell the impeller must supply surface energy corresponding to the air: liquid interfacial area on the interior of the bubble. Inasmuch as it is relatively easy to extend or contract the surface of a liquid, there are a number of successful methods for liquid surface tension, or energy, measurement based upon surface deformation. This happy state of affairs does not, however, extend to solids, which are considered to possess surface energies for the same reasons as do liquids, i.e. because of unsaturated ionic bonds at the solid: gas interface. As in the case of the flotation cell producing surface on liquids as new bubbles, it takes energy to produce new surface on solids as new particles. As every mill man knows, this surface is produced on mineral solids in a grinding mill by the action of a tumbling mass of iron balls. But here so much energy usually is wasted by the inefficient action of these balls that a large amount of heat is generated, and the surface energy production may be easily confused with the energy necessary to produce this ineffective heat. The tumbling balls and fracturing minerals ultimately take their energy from a rather large electric motor. It has been variously estimated that from 10 to 20 pct'" only of this energy from the motor does not appear as heat and may be presumed to appear as surface energy on the min- erals present. Such a production of new surface on the mineral phases is accompanied, of course, by a size reduction that is inevitable as more and more mineral interior molecules become surface molecules by the fracture exposure. This size reduction of mineral particles, although the most obvious feature and perhaps the sole object of the milling operation, is from this energy viewpoint the outward manifestation of the production of surface energy only. Measurement of the characteristic surface energies of pure minerals and their various mixtures in ores would be a step towards understanding of the energetics of the commercial grinding operation. In addition, the characteristic surface energy of a mineral is probably a physical property specific for that mineral, and therefore, from a scientific standpoint, should be measured. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the large body of work on the surface tensions of liquid systems and biological systems, the field of solid surface energies has been neglected. Prior to 1920 it is difficult to find more than one or two references to work on solid surface energies in Chemical Abstracts. Since 1920 such references number somewhat less than 100, while those on liquid systems are numbered in the thousands. Much of this apparent neglect of the field of solid surface energies (the term is intended to be somewhat inclusive at this point and refers both to the solid: gas, and the solid:liquid interface) is because of the lack of a reliable method of measurement rather than any lack of scientific curiosity. THE part that acceleration plays in starting a belt conveyor and its effect on belt conveyor design are well understood in a general way. Its practical importance is easily overlooked, however, and under some conditions, it is absolutely necessary to give the problem of acceleration detailed study. Most handbooks on conveyor belting design adequately present basic data for the determination of acceleration values. This paper will only attempt to present practical thinking and a convenient method of treatment of acceleration in belt conveyor design. Mathematical Analysis In working out the various problems of conveyor belt acceleration, the starting point, as presented by the handbooks, is the familiar formula of "force of acceleration is equal to the mass times acceleration." By expressing these fundamental quantities in terms of belt conveyor design, it is possible to arrive at the unsuspected conclusion that the acceleration time for horizontal belt conveyors is independent of the load, and instead, dependent upon the belt speed, the type of drive arrangement and drive pulley, and the idler coefficient of friction. The mathematics leading to this conclusion are shown in Table I, which has been prepared to show, this derivation. While at first the conclusion just given may not seem to be reasonable, further reflection indicates that obviously the type of drive pulley and the type of drive do affect materially the tension in the conveyor belt, and thus, as clearly shown, the time of acceleration is dependent upon the factors mentioned. Inasmuch as all of the factors except time are predetermined by the belt conveyor design, it becomes relatively easy to establish the accelerating time and to reduce further this time determination to a simple graph from which the time in seconds can be read directly. Such a graph is given in Fig. 1. The table appearing on Fig. 1 should be explained further. For a given belt speed, the time of acceleration can be expressed as a percentage of the belt speed. The time of acceleration is also dependent on the drive arrangement, and changes in the drive arrangement consequently change the time of acceleration. It further follows that for a given belt speed, the time expressed as a percentage of that belt speed also changes with the type of drive. Obviously then, it becomes possible to graph the percentage of speed for each type of drive against the belt speed and accelerating time, after which, for a given belt speed and type of drive, the time can be read directly in seconds. Two constants were established for Fig. 1, the first one being the limiting of the maximum acceleration tension to 35 pct of the full load operating tension in the belt. The purpose of this is to limit the total tension imposed upon the belt during the acceleration period to 135 pct of the full load operating tension, which is the amount required to start or breakaway the fully loaded belt conveyor from rest. The other constant is the friction factor used for the idler equipment, which has been established as 0.022. For installations where it is necessary to establish the values of acceleration, invariably high grade idler equipment is used, and it has been established from. field experience that 0.022 for the idler friction factor is amply conservative. The use of this friction factor for idlers must be tempered with judgment, of course, for occasions will arise where more power than indicated is required to start, even with the very best of equipment, such as low temperature operations that tend to congeal the grease in the bearings and thus produce additional friction drag. An inspection of the table in Fig. I affords a convenient rule of thumb method for determining the acceleration time, which conveniently can be 5 pct of the belt speed in seconds. The 5 pct of belt speed figure is close to the average for most types of drives. In using Fig. 1 it must be emphasized that it applies accurately to horizontal belt conveyors only.

ALTHOUGH the main constituents of Portland cement are the oxides of calcium, silicon, aluminum, and iron, characteristics of the cement are seriously affected by such contaminants in the raw materials as magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, sulfur, and others of lesser importance. Sources of cement raw materials comprise a long list of minerals occurring in nature in various degrees of purity. The calcareous raw materials are generally limestone of purity varying from calcite to cement rock (a low-grade limestone of natural, almost correct chemical composition), chalk, marl, seashells, coral, and coral sand. The argillaceous raw materials supplying silicon, aluminum, and iron are mainly various forms of clay and shale, to which may be added silicious sand, iron ore, bauxite, or kaolin for minor adjustment of the chemical composition. The quality of Portland cement in this country, as in most parts of the world, is controlled by rigid specifications limiting both its chemical and physical characteristics, and cement manufacturers must comply with these specifications to market their products. Brandon Raw Materials: An unusual deposit of marl, limestone, and clay occurs 12 miles east of Jackson, Miss., near the village of Brandon. The deposit is of sedimentary origin and of relatively young geological age. Layers of marl vary from putty-like consistency to such hardness that it can be cut with a knife. Interspersed between the layers of marl are bands of limestone varying from very soft to hard. the compressive strength of the hardest layers exceeding 15,000 lb per sq in. The layers of marl range in thickness from a few inches to about 25 ft. The limestone bands seldom exceed 2 to 3 ft but often occur in thinner veins in the quarry face. Above the top layer of the deposit, which may be marl or limestone, a layer of clay ranges in thickness from a few inches to more than 20 ft. Part of this clay is harvested with the raw material to supply part of the argillaceous components, but most of it is stripped as overburden and wasted. A highly silicious clay of extreme fineness, harvested from the bottom of the quarry below the marl and limestone bands, is to correct the silica content. Fig. 1 shows typical examples of the interrelation of the various materials, based on drill logs obtained during exploration of the deposit. The marls vary in moisture content in the bank from 15 to 30 pct and contain up to 70 pct -200 mesh particles and up to 40 pct —10 p particles. A large percentage of the fine fraction is within the colloidal range, making the marl extremely sticky. The limestone beds range in hardness from that of the hardest marl to a medium hard limestone and in moisture content from 2 pct to approximately 14 pct. The line of demarcation is often difficult to draw and the moisture content is possibly the best means of classification. The ratio of soft to hard material is not constant throughout the deposit, but the average is approximately 70 pct soft to 30 pct hard material. Through the years this deposit had been repeatedly explored by cement companies and rejected as unsuitable for cement manufacture, mainly because of physical characteristics. In 1950, after careful exploration of the deposit and comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant tests of the raw materials, officials of Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. of Chicago were convinced that a practical and economical method of processing the raw materials had been devised and authorized construction of a new plant that began production in December 1951. Marl and limestone, common raw materials for Portland cement, usually occur in such a manner that they can be worked separately. Their harvesting and processing normally have presented no difficult problems, as standard equipment and methods are available for handling either sticky or hard materials. No other cement plant utilizes a deposit of the nature of that at Brandon, however, and for this reason no prior art was available for design. Martensite transformations in steels and other alloys are characterized in part by the absence of composition changes during the growth of a new phase. Transformation occurs rapidly, and there is insufficient time for long range diffusion or partition of alloying elements to take place; martensite reactions in alloys thus are similar to phase transformations in single component systems. A fundamental understanding of martensite transformations in steels is impossible without knowledge of the free energy change upon transforming austenite (face centered cubic iron containing alloying elements) to ferrite (body centered cubic iron containing alloying elements) of the same chemical composition. The present paper assembles the best information available concerning the influence of temperature and composition on this free energy change. Most of the material has been taken from the work of Johansson,' Mehl and Wells,2 Zener3,4 and Smith;5 and indirectly, through these authors, from the work of Austin.6 In agreement with the generally accepted viewpoint, martensite is assumed to be an ordered solution of carbon in ferrite of the same composition as the parent austenite; only at high temperatures and low carbon concentrations is the carbon in ferrite distributed at random. The properties of the disordered solution are estimated by extrapolating the known properties of iron-carbon solid solutions into the range of supersaturation, and the free energy change associated with ordering is estimated from the theory developed by Zener. By incorporating Smith's recent thermodynamic measurements and Zener's theory of ordering, the present analysis modifies previous estimates of the free energy change associ- ated with martensite transformations. Consider a two component system consisting of a solvent A and a solute B. Let Na and Nb represent mol fractions of A and B respectively, let aa = raNa and ab = YbNb represent activities, and let superscripts 1 and 2 refer to phases 1 and 2. In recent years considerable progress has been made in the development and application of mathematical techniques for the solution of certain problems involving economic "strategies". Such a problem might involve, for example, the scheduling of shipments of a commodity from a number of sources to a number of destinations. The object would be to schedule the shipments in a manner so as to satisfy the destination requirements and at the same time minimize the transportation costs. The solution to such a problem is not necessarily intuitively obvious. The "obvious" solution is frequently far from optimum. If the shipments are to be made from, for example, only two sources to four destinations, the optimum schedule is readily found. However, if shipments are to be made from, say, 10 sources to several hundred destinations, even a competent and experienced scheduler may spend considerable time in finding a reasonable answer. Even then he is not sure that he has the optimum solution. Furthermore, he has no way of knowing how far from optimum the answer is. Consequently, he does not know whether he should accept this solution or seek a better one. Prior to the advent of large high-speed digital computers, little more could be done with such problems because of their great size and multiplicity of possible solutions. A problem involving 20 sources and 50 destinations would require choosing, from a very large number of possible combinations, the optimum combination of 1,000 variables. The best one could do was to utilize intuition, extrapolation from past experience, and other non-exact approaches. With a high-speed computer, however, such problems can be solved providing a reasonable computational procedure (or algorithm) can be utilized. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a procedure (linear programming) and to apply this procedure to a production scheduling problem. THE RESERVOIR PROBLEM A simple reservoir model is used throughout this analysis to illustrate the use of linear programming. Even the simplest reservoir behavior problem is nonlinear in both space and time, but if the geometry is fixed for a particular study and the time variable is quantized, the resultant system may be described by linear constraints on the variable production rates. Crude oil is available from five separate sources and is delivered to a pipeline. Sources 1, 2, 3 and 4 are ideal reservoirs and therefore are subjected to reservoir flow restrictions. Source 5 is labeled "Outside Source" and crude oil from this source is assumed to be available in unlimited quantities without considering reservoir conditions. The general problem is to determine the schedule of crude oil production from five sources which, over an eight-year period and subject to certain restrictions, will result in maximum profit. "Profit" is defined to encompass all economic factors and expenses involved in producing and selling crude oil to a pipeline facility. Such economic factors are lumped to the extent that the term represents the dollars profit from one barrel of crude oil from any of the five sources entering the pipeline system. Table 1 presents the assumed profit per barrel for oil from any of the five sources over each of the four time periods. In this chart the eight years is broken into four equal intervals of two years. The selection of four time periods of two years each and the values representing the potential profit are completely arbitrary selections for the purpose of illustrating this idealized reservoir problem. In any practical application of this work a careful economic study would have to be made in order to estimate potential unit profits for time periods as far in the future as eight years. In this particular study it is assumed that all of the potential unit profits (C) are known and fixed before the production schedule is attempted. For each reservoir arbitrary values are assigned for
